Salmagundi is, hands down, the finest hat shop I've ever set foot in -- and I say that as someone who has spent the last 40 years frequenting some of the best haberdasheries in New York City. I visited the Jamaica Plain shop today with my brother, on what happened to be the 27th anniversary of my father's passing. What could have been a heavy, emotional day was transformed into something unexpectedly meaningful, thanks in large part to the experience I had with Jessen. He spent well over an hour with me, patiently walking through countless combinations of styles, shapes, and colors -- not rushing, not upselling, just exploring what really worked. He was thoughtful, kind, and extraordinarily knowledgeable, and it was clear he genuinely enjoyed the process of helping me find the right hat. That enthusiasm was contagious; time absolutely flew by. I left with a beautiful hat and a matching scarf, each with its own story -- down to where the wool came from and how it was made. That level of care and passion isn't something you can fake. It's obvious that Jessen and Andria care deeply about their craft, their customers, and the experience they create in the shop. This was, without question, the best experience I've ever had in a hat store. The selection is fantastic, but it's the heart, expertise, and hospitality that make Salmagundi truly special. Went in to have my Stetson completely worked over from a cowboy hat to a gentleman's fedora. Jessen worked on it for hours getting it to perfection. that is next level customer service. He then wrapped a new ribbon around it and pinned it to one side. No way I was going to leave without buying another hat so now I have a felt fedora as my everyday wear. I found Salmagundi through a net search, because I wanted a new hatbox & grooming brush for my father's 1950's bowler hat, so that I could present it to my brother for Christmas. This is because the owner Jessen is a man who is probably secretly a hat; when the lights go out at night, he very likely hops up onto the shelf next to the snakeskin Stetson, takes his true form (an ostrich Bowler) and falls fast asleep. Jessen knows heads, and hats, and social justice. He is passionate about all three of these elements in an intertwined manner that makes for an incredible shopping experience. When I and several other genderfabulous people came in, he showed each of us hats from both sides of the store, enthusiastically, talking about the makers and histories of each selection. This is a LGBTQQIAA-happy space. It's also just a happy space. There's always a bustling crew of shoppers, but it never feels crowded. Hats of many sizes co-mingle with jewelry, accessories (like business card slash cigarette cases), and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting because: hats. Hats, hats, hats. This place is a hat paradise. I feel like I would be so very well-suited (get it? because suits go with...never mind) to show up at Salmagundi in attire from any period where hats feature prominently. I've spent hours in this store (in fact, on just one visit, we stayed for two), and never get tired. These are hats for people who appreciate amazing, stylish, well-made attire, and these unapologetic hats pull no punches. You could easily make one of these hats last for decades. I've never been to Boston, not even for a layover in the airport. I've heard it's a beautiful city with a rich history and lots to do, so hopefully I can make there one of these days. I'm writing this review because I saw a pocket square that I liked on Salmagundi's website. It looks like it was either locally made or possibly a custom piece, but it wasn't something you could find everywhere and I liked it a lot. I had an issue with some of the shipping options so I emailed the store hoping to see if there might be a different way to do this than what was listed on the website. Within a couple of hours, one of the store owners messaged me with a better option so I bought the pocket square within minutes. I loved the personal touch and I'm very happy with my purchase. I'm not sure when I'll make it to the Boston area, but when I do I hope to make time and stop by in person. read more

This is a review for a visit I made many years ago. My head is extremely large, and it is very difficult to find hats that fit me. When I buy a fitted baseball cap, I need something larger than a size 8. I mentioned all of this to the owner and he went out of his way to find hats in his storeroom that would fit me. Hat's off to this TREMAZING atelier. We came in looking for fabulous hats & thats exactly what we walked away with. The service here is top notch and all the designs & styles they carry are really fantastic. We had friends visiting from DC and wanted to show them around JP and Salmagundi was our first stop. We each had a hard time deciding what hat to buy, but from the moment we stepped in it was very clear that we were all walking away properly topped. The stock seems endless and they have sooooo many shapes & sizes. My fiance and I happen to have completely opposite sized heads. He has a giant noggin' and I, on the other hand, have a baby head. The owner of the store (who is awesome) noticed this huge difference right away and went about sizing both our heads to find hats that fit us perfectly. My fiance can never find stylish hats that aren't squeezed on, and i typically have to push hats out of my eyes because they are so big. Not at Salmagundi! Salmagundi is more than just hats. It's cool purses and cool shirts and cool jewelry and freakin' awesome belts with Mary and Baby Jesus on them too. I just got back from buying a fabulous 30th birthday present for my best friend. She is going to love it. How do I know she's going to love it? Because any fashion-forward girl worth her salt would love any of the accessories at Salmagundi. Everything is hip and current with whiff of vintage classiness. The selection is obviously carefully selected- everything is well made, top end stuff. So, no, it's not the cheapest place on the block- but it's definitely the best place on the block. (And I wouldn't say it's over priced either- the classic "you get what you pay for" thing). I've yet to purchase a hat from Salmagundi- which is ridiculous seeing as that's what the store really is- but I plan to. And I plan to buy a wholeheckuvalot more than just a hat- there's just too many other fabulous things not to. read more

Everytime I hear this store's name get a mention I can't help but think about the Rhyme of Solomon Grundy which I remember hearing as a kid. A weird rhyme about a guy who only lives for 7 days, but goes through every right of passage in that week. Turns out Solomon Grundy is a corruption from Salmagundi - which is the name of a dish popular a hundred or more years ago in England. The dish was basically an all-in salad - a random mix of good things... with many flavors and colours thrown together, often with a flower or two as well. Which nicely brings us to JP's Salmagundi - a wonderful mix of the best things in fashion... hats, bags, sunglasses, ties, bracelets, a few t-shirts and now shoes as well. With an appealing layout and nice staff it's already doing well and prices are very reasonable for a boutique so we're doing even better. What really matters to me though is having a guy running the store. Too many boutiques just throw in a handful of stuff for guys as an afterthought and invariably all the hats are too small for me. The usual result is that nothing is worth getting and I'm bored as a tunnel whilst my lady shops til the second coming. Not here though - this place is equal opportunity. Salmagundi is well worth the trek out to JP (for those of us who live on the other side of the river, or don't have a car). It's a fantastic store with an amazing selection of hats and accessories, where the customer service is top notch. You can touch and try anything you want, and they'll give you tons of information about the types of hats you're trying and how to care for them. Got my bf a gift certificate here as part of his bday present, and we finally made it in this past weekend. He probably tried almost every hat in the store - it was so fun! I really can't say enough about the folks who own/run this place. Yesterday I went with a mission to leave my comfort zone and try a true hat. Jessen - one if owners - took me under his wing. Personal shopping basically. He explained the details of the hats (crown, tear drop, stingy, etc) and clearly knows his stuff. He quickly understood my likes/dislikes and found some great options.
