I visited the Jamaica Plain shop today with my brother, on what happened to be the 27th anniversary of my father's passing. What could have been a heavy, emotional day was transformed into something unexpectedly meaningful, thanks in large part to the experience I had with Jessen. He spent well over an hour with me, patiently walking through countless combinations of styles, shapes, and colors -- not rushing, not upselling, just exploring what really worked. He was thoughtful, kind, and extraordinarily knowledgeable, and it was clear he genuinely enjoyed the process of helping me find the right hat. That enthusiasm was contagious; time absolutely flew by. I left with a beautiful hat and a matching scarf, each with its own story -- down to where the wool came from and how it was made. That level of care and passion isn't something you can fake. It's obvious that Jessen and Andria care deeply about their craft, their customers, and the experience they create in the shop. This was, without question, the best experience I've ever had in a hat store. The selection is fantastic, but it's the heart, expertise, and hospitality that make Salmagundi truly special. This did not improve with a trip to the dry cleaner and a pressed crease. The marketing that these are business attire you can travel in felt misleading, because the fabric wrinkled easily. The underlying issue was poor construction, not just temporary wrinkling. The most frustrating part was the return policy. By the time the delayed shipment arrived and I had a chance to assess the quality, the purchase was already outside their 30‑day return window, and customer service refused a return. In other words, the shipping delay effectively wiped out my ability to return a clearly unsatisfactory product. Given the combination of slow fulfillment, disappointing quality, and rigid handling of the return window, I would not purchase from Ministry of Supply again and would urge others to be very cautious about the quality and to watch the return timeline closely.
