I visited the Jamaica Plain shop today with my brother, on what happened to be the 27th anniversary of my father's passing. What could have been a heavy, emotional day was transformed into something unexpectedly meaningful, thanks in large part to the experience I had with Jessen. He spent well over an hour with me, patiently walking through countless combinations of styles, shapes, and colors -- not rushing, not upselling, just exploring what really worked. He was thoughtful, kind, and extraordinarily knowledgeable, and it was clear he genuinely enjoyed the process of helping me find the right hat. That enthusiasm was contagious; time absolutely flew by. I left with a beautiful hat and a matching scarf, each with its own story -- down to where the wool came from and how it was made. That level of care and passion isn't something you can fake. It's obvious that Jessen and Andria care deeply about their craft, their customers, and the experience they create in the shop. This was, without question, the best experience I've ever had in a hat store. The selection is fantastic, but it's the heart, expertise, and hospitality that make Salmagundi truly special. They charge $5 per month for their consignor access website, and it is very hard to opt out (I had to opt out every time I consigned and sometimes press them to reverse the charge after it had been applied anyway). Also, I noticed that the payout amount is often less than what was on their label. I don't think they want you to see the labels but I went in the store to take a look and it was higher than what they marked on my printout. Not recommended for consigning.
