Came her to get some keys made. I like to support local businesses when possible. Walk in and no one is at the counter and no sign posted. There's a tv on so there is some background noise. I politely said hello? with no response. Ringed the bell with no response. Something seemed off so I walked around and politely said hello? A few times. I finally heard a noise that sounded like someone was struggling. I walk into a back room and this lady walks out and says "I said I would be with you in a moment 3 times". Mind you she was in a closet in another room (maybe it was the bathroom). I said I didn't hear here and she mumbled something that made me ask if I should just go elsewhere- her response was "if you want to- I'm jn no mood". Threw me off and made me uncomfortable. I told her that's no way to treat customers and she continued on (rudely) explaining why she wasn't in the mood. I couldn't believe it. We exchanged more words, she told me to get a hearing aid (because I didn't hear her in the back of the store) and I left. I will NEVER come here again and I urge you not to either. The lady that works here is extremely rude! This store is extremely dirty and has two dogs running around. It's gross and overpriced. sadly, I'd rather go to Home Depot or Lowe's. read more

I have not personally worked with this business, but this week somebody driving a Winter's Hardware truck was doing landscaping work at a house in my neighborhood. The man mowing the lawn was screaming profanities and yelling at the young woman working with him and using the leaf blower. He was verbally berating her and pushing her back towards the car . Several families in our neighborhood called the police due to the disturbance. When the police came, the man became more agitated and started yelling at the cops and swearing at them. This was VERY alarming to see happening in a very family oriented neighborhood. read more

I love going here. It's an old school hardware store. Hasn't changed much since it opened in the Twenties. The new owner is the niece, I think, of the original owner, and is a hoot! They are very helpful, and if they don't stock something; they'll tell who does. read more

If your savior mentality isn't kicking in, here are more reasons to get everything you need at Winters Hardware: -Prices are great. Electrical tape is way cheaper than at CVS or home depot. There's a huge inventory of standard hardware supplies but I also get the feeling you can find things here you can't at Home Depot - and at way better prices. -There are also a ton of household goods, too, like coat hangers and pitchers. It's part incredible inventory hardware store and part thrift store. Winters has everything from signs to antiques to mason jars to teacups to DVDs to a zillion different types of wood marker. -Service is personal, thoughtful, and really really goes the extra mile. If you want something and can't find it, you get recommendations for other local businesses - and sometimes you get exactly what you need. I came for a sewing needle and ended up leaving with a gorgeous vintage metal cushion full of needles and hatpins. I didn't have any cash on me so the owner let me take it on the honor system that I come back to pay for it later. She also offered to run home and get more for me. Reading other reviews, I can see that this is a pretty common experience. -There's always a dog hanging out that's friendly but not needy. Goodbye bodega cat, hello Hardware dog! -Re: negative reviews on rudeness: sounds like a lot of people that come in don't want to do any work themselves, don't know how to work with or talk to people, and are pretty entitled. I mean if you're going to bang on a locked door of a local business when it's clearly not open and insist on getting what you want, you shouldn't be surprised that your hands and feet aren't kissed. The smells when you walk in alone transport you to a time when people didn't have their heads looking down at their phones and looked you in the eye. I needed keys made $2.75 each for a simple replica. Quick and easy. They was a steady entrance of people for the entire 5,minutes I was there. Gentleman was a hardware clerk; nothing more nothing less did his job and took care of cashing me out. I looked up near the register area to see a second floor filled with all kinds of neat things. I love old buildings and the stories they hold, I'd love to run around up there one day. They had all a typical hardware store typically offers, paint, tools, leaf bags, keys, nails, screws. It was the morning after a big snow storm and Home Depot had zero shovels in stock. ZERO. Big badass hardware chain Home Depot had not a single shovel left! Not Winters Hardware! They provide for you in your time of need. My favorite place for personalized service for everything from minor new keys, to choosing concrete paint, getting screens fixed, saving money on mice problems, finding a handyman, redoing a bathroom on a budget with real brass fittings for a utility sink and endless amounts of fun and hilarious chats with Wanda. I love that she is sometimes feisty and a strong advocate for doing things well and not falling for overpriced tacky solutions. This place had pretty terrible service. We just moved into the area and chose to go to a local hardware store to purchase a wooden dowel and some sockets to mount it with rather than order online. The woman first judged what I was looking for, then was unhelpful, and then brought me to something different after I told her it wasn't what I was looking for. She then fought me on getting what I wanted until another man who worked there said it was easy. When we went to purchase I pulled out my credit card. The woman looked at it and said '$10 minimum'. I asked her if it was $10 and it rang out to $10.60. In response, she added an arbitrary $2 charge because she had cut 6" off of the dowel for me and because I was 'paying with a card'. She then proceeded to tell me that it was bad for her business if I bought with a credit card, called me ignorant, and then kicked me out of her store. Dear miserable woman who works on Saturdays: I have $500-$1000 worth of work to do on the apartment in the next month. I hope you enjoyed saving your 3% on this $10 purchase and that it was worth losing that business and a future client. I am actually rather stunned at the positive reviews about this place. I live 2 blocks from this place and absolutely adore stores like this. In my ideal world, mom and pop stores like this abound. I hesitate to write a negative review of a place like this, as I typically do not want to detract so much as a nickel from their potential business-but I have been treated just horribly one too many times by the jerks that work at or own this place. I am a non-demanding, completely laid back customer and I typically spend a good deal of money at this place. However, today I went there and needed only one thing-twine for my weed-eater. I didn't see it and asked the guy working there if they had any. He first yelled at me, walked over, pointed at the stuff and declared: "here, you have a WEED WHACKER and its called plastic line and you have to figure out what size you need because that's your business..." I was just stunned. Normally, I would just chalk this up to the guy having a bad day, but apparently people who work here have too many bad days. A few months back, a woman employee scolded me for not knowing which type of paint I needed. I was patching a wall and I honestly didn't know. I figured she would be a good person to ask, since she works at the type of establishment where one typically expects exemplary service...or at least the courtesy of an answer to an honest question. Thus, I really want to like and support this place but I cannot. Sure, the hip clunker bike in the window-Radio Flyer wagon-seed bag-old time vibe of this place is charming but the service leaves a whole lot to be desired. read more

She had everything I needed, & the prices were reasonable & probably no more than chain store prices. It's not easy running a small business, so I don't know what's up with the bad reviews on here. Chris I They should change their store name to: BLACK MARKET HARDWARE STORE. Went there to buy a bag of ice melt that usually sells from $$ 15 - 25. I ask the woman behind the counter if they had ice melt which was scarce to find due to the heavy snowfall we had. She said yes and I asked her how much? She responded $$46. Sarcastically, I asked her, do you take blue cross? Her response : Only hospitals take that. My price is $$46 if you don't need it don't buy it. I said, you know that I need it and I have to pay this price. Very rude and unfriendly person, didn't even give me a receipt for the ice melt which I pay more than double the price that other places charge. While installing my TV's wall mount I had to make 3 trip here in the course of 30mins. Each time the woman behind the counter helped me find exactly what I was looking for, including the last time... in which I had to find 4 screws that match the ones that came with the mounting unit, but were 1/2 a millimeter shorter. We are lucky to have this store in our local market. They are expert key cutters and make a trip to a locksmith unnecessary. The cost of services are low and the quality of service excellent. The previous owners made me want to avoid this place like the plague but fortunately they're long gone. Noting Johny D's comment below, there is one guy who works there occasionally who needs a personality transplant but I'd say on balance it's a great experience and for Belmont residents you can't beat the location. I ran to this store after work to get some keys made. Got to the store with 8 minutes to spare before closing time. The open sign was on but the door was locked. I knocked, the woman came to the door and I asked if they were still open. She barked "the door is locked am I still open??" I replied it's not 6 yet I just need to get keys made. She let me in but was visibly perturbed. A man came in after I was there which made her even madder. I only gave her business because I really needed the keys but will never ever come here again. I lived for 9 years right near this store in Cushing Square, Belmont. They almost ALWAYS could help me. As the other reviewers said, the owner is very helpful and nice, and funny, and makes you feel good to walk in the door. One time, I needed something and it was like five minutes to six on a week day, just at closing time, so I called up and asked when they were closing. She said, well, what do you need, and I started stuttering, and she said, just get your ass down here! So I zoomed over there and even though it was closing time, she helped me out. That's service you don't get most places, even in small businesses and certainly not the big box chains where most people are just worker drones in the System. Also, the prices have always seemed reasonable, so I don't feel ripped off to shop there. read more
