Absolutely love this store. This place is my go-to for everything I need around the house. It's a small space but they pack a ton in -- I've found drain covers, toothpicks, doggy bags, etc. It's wild. They have a paint selection as well which is crazy -- they are very efficient with the layout. This store stands out over other shops in the area for two reasons: the staff are super helpful, and the items are priced incredibly fairly. The staff is always eager to help and I have never had a negative experience. I get items here for half or less of what they'd cost at other home stores on the street. A small friendly hardware store on the Centre street strip. I made many a trip here when I lived in the hood. Stray paint, shovels, twine, light bulbs, rakes, rock salt, small coffee pots, cracks or spackle cock this place is great for all your home fix it needs. Prices are city prices and they do not have everything as it is a small store. It is no Homo Depot. (But there is a lot of homos lurking about). Everyone should go to this hardware store! I went to Ace before I knew better, and they always treated me in ways that made me feel dumb and/or just generally awkward. I dont know if it was because I'm white, female, quiet, or all of the above, but I just always wanted to get out of there as quick as possible and hoped to god I wouldnt have any questions. Then one day I was on the hunt for a particular type of funnel to put fuel into my car. Nobody seemed to have i, and, true to form, the Ace staff made me out as crazy for asking for one with a flexible end to it. The guy I asked seemed to think I was making such a product up, and tried to convince me the long funnel he had was the best I was going to find. I'd never been into Yumont but I was on a mission, so I stopped in. The guy I spoke with (possibly the owner? or a manager?) listened to what I was looking for and pulled out the catalog the store orders from. We looked through it and found the most likely candidate and he said he'd have two of them in the following Monday. I went in the following Tuesday and there it was! My dream funnel! What service. A great little hardware store. It has a great staff that is more than happy to assist you with all your hardware needs and questions. Among everything else, they carry Benjamin Moore paints. As a painter I highly recommend this brand. If you are concerned about the environment they carry eco friendly paint, by BM, it is called AURA. Aura paint is guaranteed to cover in two coats over anything. It is more expensive but worth it if your time is more precious than an extra $20. The paint also will cover most light to medium colors in one coat. The trick is to apply it once and not go over it again until it is dry, touch-ups. Just ask for it and they'll mix up your color for you quickly! A great store all around. read more

I enjoy my shopping experiences at this store. The staff is extremely friendly and seemingly knowledgeable (I've never had any super difficult questions beyond, "Do you carry this?" (referring to a screw I need to replace on my bike). (They didn't carry it, but neither did the bike shop.) The selection is about average for a local hardware store. Stuff is pretty easy to find and the store is well maintained. I absolutely recommend going here. Edited to add a fifth star: I had a weird quandary a week ago. I have a pocket knife that has a belt clip on it. 2 of the 3 tiny screws holding the belt clip in place fell out. I didn't want to replace the entire knife, so I figured I would stop by and see if there was anything that could help. I located small machine screws that where waaaaay too long. An employee with very good timing had just arrived and asked me if I needed help. I explained the situation with having properly sized screws for my knife, but they were too long and he volunteered to saw down the screws for me. So, he took the screws, sawed them down, installed them into the belt clip, and sent me on my way. All that for $.55!!! I don't need a hardware store often, but I love this place. read more

They carry Benjamin Moore paint, they are not condescending toward woman. They know alot about paint, and even tried to persuade me not to buy the 52 $ a gallon Aura paint. I should have listened, its like dealing with clay slip rather than paint! you need to practice working with it - they also warned me of this. I did buy the special Aura roller - i am hoping the walls will look like smooth silk screened walls rather than Jackson Pollack works - oh well. They pack many small items an apt/ condo would need - drain cleaner , door mats, locks , tacky lights, key chains etc. SUPPORT your local store. love that the guy mixing my paint was sneaking a cig. out the back door! read more

I love Yumont. During our move to Jamaica Plain we spent a lot of our time here. Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. When I first moved to JP I had hardware store withdrawal. At my old place there was a hardware store right down the way, I usually went there every week for something little like a screw to something bigger like a c-clamp. Yumont gracefully took on my addiction. I was probably there everyday the first two weeks in May as I was settled into my new place. Really friendly staff, huge selection - more than you will be able to figure out yourself, so just ask one of the nice employees. Also prices are pretty decent. Feels like a hardware store too - that's important. Some hardware stores in the city feel like convenience stores with duct tape and mitre saws. Seeing as there is one other option in JP I'll say I went to the other place down the street and felt like a criminal for walking in. read more

The secret to Yumont Hardware: Don't even bother trying to find something yourself. Just ask. Sure, it's a small hardware store. Sure, it doesn't even look like they have much stuff. But they *do*. They just tend to have one of everything, unlike Home Depot that has 10,000 variations of everything. So rather than try to figure out where on earth that one thing is, just ask somebody. Yumont makes me quite happy on a regular basis. They have all of the basics (really...just the basics) at reasonable prices. Whether it be those really cheap curtain rods, kitchen basics, paint, mulch or small screws with which I can MacGuyver another year out of my Ikea furniture. It's the kind of store that makes one feel as if one lives in an actual neighborhood as opposed to Allston.* It's a real small town hardware experience, free of the mountains of products at Home Depot that I think are immensely fun as a home improvement television watcher, but don't at all need as a lowly renter. My one complaint is a limited collection of spray paint colors. Not at all useful in a recent squirrel painting project (not painting squirrels...paintings of squirrels. I'm pro animal.) *I love Allston. I just left it along with my undergraduate self over by the river. read more

I've been here a bunch of times over the years and they've always been a great help to me. The Benjamin Moore paint they sell is so vastly superior to anything Home Depot sells, I almost don't mind spending 30% more for it. I painted (well stained really) a porch with stuff I got from them and I know it would have taken way more than the 2 coats I put on to get the result I got. It went on easy, looked great and has worn well. The staff has always been nice to me right down to when I brought them a key blank I had for my Triumph, the guy cut the key and said "you can just have it. I don't even know how to charge you for a key when you bring your own blank." It worked too unlike the 2 keys I got cut at Home Depot recently where neither of them worked. The only things I wish they had more of was a selection. Sometimes I end up going someplace else just because I know the selection of plumbing items or electrical stuff isn't going to be enough to carry what I need. That's the trouble with that kind of stuff, when you need it, you need it now! Also, I wish they were open later. I'm working most of the time their open. I have to make a special point of going there on the weekend and anyone who has ever driven down Centre St. at noon on Saturday knows, that's just suicide. read more

Well this place is a crap shoot, only a couple of the guys know what they are doing and offer to order you what you need (I suspect they are the owners). The place is tiny so one might think it is a good idea to call before you go in, to find out if they carry what you are looking for so that you don't head out there only to find they don't have it. I unfortunately always seem to call and get the morons who's simple answer is nope we don't carry that. A simple nope we don't carry that would be great if in fact they actually didn't carry what I was looking for, on more than one occasion I have asked about a product to be told that they don't have it only to find it on the shelf the next time I go into the store. For some reason the guys who answer nope we don't carry that also have no idea what is on the store shelves so calling and asking if they have something in stock is a waste of time meaning the only way you will know if they have a product is to actually walk into the store. And as the place is tiny you really only have a 50/50 shot of them having what you need in stock. I loathe home depot, but they seem to be the only place with almost everything in stock that you would need, if you get the right person here they will offer to order stuff for you, but who really wants to wait and then make another trip out here. read more

This is the neighborhood store that you would find in Mayberry, or where I grew up in upstate NY. So, I love it here. The people that work here are SO friendly and nice. They are always willing to help you no matter what.. I always, always go here! It must be the small town feeling because I usually get into a conversation with another customer here. If I saw them out on the street they would probably spit at me if I said hi to them, but in your local hardware store, everyone is happy. Good for paint, hardware, gardening stuff. You are not required to go to Home Depot or that other big chain hardware store every time that you need to get a tube of caulking or a light bulb. Seriously, don't believe the hype. Even though your local mom and pop hardware store might not have an express check out or a team of retired handymen wandering specific aisles, I bet they have some of the basic (and not so basic) stuff that you might otherwise waste half your weekend trying to find at the local Depot. Case in point. A tube of acrylic caulking and one of those bulbs for inside your stove. Look around - light bulbs, check, caulking, check, pay cash to a live person who knows how to say 'Thank you come again!' and smile and leave. Done with cruel weekend duties. My boyfriend and I jokingly refer to this place as the "grumpy store." And they *are* quite grumpy these days. When I first moved here in 2005, I always had a great time here. The guys who worked there were chummy and helpful, and would go that extra mile by volunteering more information or alternatives. Where have those friendly dudes gone? We do try to support local Centre Street businesses by dropping into Yumont before heading to the Depot, but each time we've been there in the last few months, we've gotten (1) curt "nope, don't have it" type responses, or (2) hardware all but thrown our way, with no accompanying pleasantry (even, "here you go"). This place has done a 180. Every time I walk in, someone asks if they can help me within a few seconds. They know their products and will help you find what you need. They also have a HUGE selection of goods for such a tiny store. Specialty batteries, kitchen organization, cleaners, gardening supplies (in the summer), snow removal supplies (in the winter), lots of hardware (screws, washers, fasteners, bolts, nails, hooks, etc.), screen windows, tools, pest control, the list goes on. Great neighborhood small business. One recent experience sums it up: I needed a few pieces of hardware, bought 1 assembly to bring home to test out. Didn't fit, so I went back to exchange for the correct size, and MORE of them. The gentleman at the counter told me I could take them free of charge. A small gesture to some, but something you would likely never see at The Home Depot or some big box chain. I've more than once arrived at the doorstep of Yumont panting and sweaty after running to get there before they close. They've always rewarded my mad dash by unlocking the door and saying, "Okay, one last customer!" The last time I did this they let two more people in after me, saying "Okay, one last customer!" each time. It's my own bad luck that I get home from work right as they're closing, but they never seem resentful and they never try to rush me along. I know what it's like to want to rush people out of your store so you can get home and get on with your life, and I know the ol' "ignore-that-panting-guy-at-the-door-can't-he-see-the-closed-sign" trick, but thankfully no one has told the good folks at Yumont about this tried and true customer avoidance method. They're always happy to help, and if they don't have what I'm looking for they always point me in the right direction. But they usually have what I'm looking for. The place is like Mary Poppins' magic bag if Mary Poppins was a hardware store clerk: it seems too small to have the thing I'm looking for, yet they always seem to pull it out from a corner somewhere. If you live in JP and schlep out to a Big Box Hardware Store(tm) for all your hardware needs, then you, dear reader, are a fool. This is everything you want in a neighborhood hardware store. The employees are helpful and at least somewhat knowledgable, the selection is broad, and the prices are reasonable. Yes, you're going to pay more for an item than you will at Home Depot or CVS, but you also get to talk to someone about it and that person can help you make the best choice about the item. I wouldn't go here for a bulk purchase, but if you need anything in a pinch, from appliances to cleaning supplies to hardware to paint, they have it. I actually purchased several gallons of high end Benjamin Moore paint from Yumont, and the color was precise and they helped carry all the equipment to the car. I highly recommend them. read more

I absolutely love this place, mostly because they're helpful with both the practical and completely impractical items. I went on a two-week odyssey in search of a locking nut for my futon. After searching the Greater Boston area for a fine-thread nut, I finally found it just around the corner at Yumont. Since then, those guys have helped me with everything from paint supplies to mason jars for an art project. They also seem to understand that both they and the Ace Hardware down the street are in it together against the big box stores. The store is a little small but they still have a great selection, I've never been disappointed. Best hardware store in JP. Wonderful old fashioned hardware store that has items you cant find in a Home Depot. The paint dept is well stocked and custom blending is no problem. When you need help to fix something, and not really sure how to do it but you are lucky enough to get Aron, you will be in great hands. Aron is the number one asset in the store who is always helpful, and honestly tries to find solutions for you. He is probably one of the main reasons I come back all the time! I recommend Yumont Hardware for the good customer service, products, and friendly customers! I had stopped by Ace (two blocks east) before but most of the reviews are right. Ace customer service (even on the phone) is hit or miss and usually not encouraging you to shop there.
