Jenks is one of the few hardware stores where you can still get old-time service, services and hardware items. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. I went in to get a piece of Plexiglas and this is one of the few places that will cut it to size for you. David Hadley was so friendly and helpful, and made sure I got my Plexiglas that day instead of having to make another trip (I don't live nearby). I highly recommend this store--it's worth the trip. Very friendly staff members and they really seem like they want to take care of their customers. Came here to make few key copies for business matters and wanted to spend only few minutes here because of meetings and tight schedules. Granted I went there during the day and the store was pretty much empty. No lines, no waits, maybe one other customer. I ended up spending 30 minutes waiting on few key copies instead of like 5 minutes that I wanted to spend. And this might sound unreasonable but hear me out. I have experience with the key cutter and I have cut hundreds of keys before. It does not take more than 5 minutes to cut 8 copies of SC1. Due to this very long wait, I was late to the next two meetings and schedule was messed up. Still would have given more stars since the staff member was very apologetic but found out 4 out of 8 keys were cut wrong by fraction of a milimeter which makes them not work properly. This might not be a big error but that actually affects how the key is inserted into the lock and to hit the springs. Not a good experience from this place. read more

So I went to Ace, which advertises itself as Frager's, which it's not and was treated so poorly and rudely I just left. Ace is closer to my home. And I guess that's the angle for them. Jenks however was an amazing experience. I have been going to Jenks more since the old Frager's burned down but the 2 experiences of miserable treatment at Ace (not original Frager's) and Jenks was black and white. Jenks respected that I knew what I was doing. They took the time to ask me if I was from the area (funny too because I am and old pre fire Frager's was my first job in the early 90s) and they felt like a neighborhood hardware store should. If this seems like I'm trashing one to lift another, in some ways I kinda am. Everyone starts at a 0 with me. You can up or you can go down. Frager's went down. Jenks went through the roof. Glad to have Jenks as my new hardware store! read more

The second time I walked in the store they remembered my name. I've purchased hardware here and it's always top quality to the point that when I buy a product elsewhere and it includes screws, bolts, etc., I immediately go to Jenks to replace the cheap stuff with higher quality material that doesn't break. Their paint department is staffed by folks who actually know paint and even advise downward when more expensive paint isn't needed. Their tool selection is far better than the other local hardware store on the Hill as is their home goods selection. I've bought major woodworking tools from Jenks and have more confidence in them than had I bought them from some unknown seller on-line. They've gone out of their way to correct the failure of the manufacturer that failed to include ordered parts. Unlike other local hardware stores as well as big box stores, the staff at Jenks knows their product line. I've gone there ignorant of what I needed but told them what I wanted to do and they worked with me to get it right. My kind of store. The only thing I couldn't find were 6 inch boat/rope cleats but neither were they available at Fragers, Home Depot, or Lowes. I've renovated two of my houses and am an avid woodworker. We had to replace a door in our bathroom and needed some advice and and tools to rent to get the job done. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. They went the extra mile and rented us a belt sander right off the shelf rather than turn us away. They also demonstrated proper technique to get the hinges flush, and recommended the proper chisel to accomplish the task. On top of all that they shook up a can of paint we had purchased earlier for another project a few months back. Best darn hardware store I've ever been to. Smart, efficient staff, knowledgeable about a lot of stuff, price competitive. They aren't huge but what they don't have they can get for you. My realtor pointed them out when we were checking out the neighborhood. I kinda laughed at the idea that a hardware store would be a local draw, but sure enough I'm there a couple of times a month. I had a bucket of paint left from a DIY home project that I tried to return to Home Depot, as before they used to take back anything you ended up not using. Surprise! A super rude guy told me they never had such thing (not true), he does not care where I take my paint and its my problem. Luckily for me a customer overheard me and pointed me to an information board about recycling paint and after a few google checks I found WS Jenks within just a mile. What a lucky find! I walked into the store and one guy up front told me to put the bucket on the ground. He then called another guy who took it from me right away and asked me if there was anything else. The store was so large and bright, I had to explore. They had a great variety of just about anything. Then a sign to a rooftop garden caught my eye - I went there and could not find anyone (recent snow storm made little sense for having anything on the roof). I walked back and asked the same person about the garden - he walked all the way up with me, showed me everything they had in green houses and told me the store does not itself sell it, but have a collaboration with a local entrepreneur who does. He then spent a few minutes looking for him and when we couldn't find him, he walked all the way to the first floor and found me a business card with his contact information. I was simply blown away. I have not spent a cent there, yet I was treated like a queen. From now on this is my go to place! The garden had tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and wild strawberries! So I had to come back - see the pictures. They also have communal classes on the weekends on how-to - that day it was a pickling class. The place cannot get any better! What nice and helpful employees that actually know something about hardware. Bought some candles, art brushes, a couple of decorative items and got keys made (and they worked). I have been to this hardware store several times as its a mere 5 minute walk from my home. What intrigues me a great deal about this hardware store is the community/neighborhood culture and "feel" that it facilitates. I'm from Southern Virginia and, in my experience, the neighborhood store owners were just kind and willing to be of service to its residents. This store is just like that. This past Tuesday while walking home from work, I dropped by to look at a patio bistro set that I had seen the previous day. The owner came over and chatted with me educating me about the set's quality, making me feel so confident about the impending purchase. I bought the set. The price was cheaper than comparable sets I had seen at other stores. I told him I had a very tiny car. He immediately said that's not a problem and told me he'd grab his truck and bring my new patio set to my house. I was like "really?" And, that's exactly what he did. He placed it on his truck and drove my set and ME to my home within 15 minutes of my purchase. Now, YOU WILL NEVER RECEIVE THAT KIND OF TREATMENT AT HOME DEPOT OR LOWES. NEVER!!! It was very kind and I'm still grateful for their kindness and willingness to be of such great service to our neighborhood. This is my go to hardware store! PS. Check out their rooftop garden. It is awesome. They are extremely knowledgeable about growing and cultivating as well as being a source of stimulating a community vegetable co-op in the neighborhood. How cool is that??!! read more

It's not Home Depot. Probably the best compliment a local hardware store can get. This place (housed in a former Ford Dealership (from like the 1910s)) is a few rungs above your typical Ace Hardware, but not nearly as massive as a Home Depot or Lowes. They fill that extremely common middle ground for the average home owner and DIYer where you can't exactly put your finger on the problem or tool needed, or just need a quick item. Whether you're a complete novice or an experienced, salty handyman with many a TV repaired, picture hung, and tile grouted, these guys are there - ready to offer advice (if needed), the right tool (always), and a sympathetic ear (usually) to take care of your problems. I popped in here today on a whim hoping I could find a few random items for my new apartment. I needed small tension rods and a lamp harp. Who asks for stuff like that? I mean really. I didn't catch the young lady's name who helped me but she was extremely helpful, friendly and willing to do whatever she had to in order to help me find the items I sought. W.S. Jenks & Son is a fantastic local hardware store right on Bladensburg Road. I've dropped by here a few times to pick up items for household projects, packing materials, and cleaning supplies. They obviously aren't going to carry as much as a gigantic hardware store, but they more than make up for that with the friendly, knowledgeable staff and great atmosphere. Their prices are on par with other hardware stores. I've never used them for contractor services, but it looks like they would be able to outfit your larger jobs, too! High Points: The staff is as helpful as can be! The entire store is bright, cheery, and well-lit. Low Points: They don't carry the same quantity or variety as a larger hardware store. read more

I've been to hardware stores primarily Ace Hardware (14th St for 12+ years), Home Depot, and Lowes. When I moved to the neighborhood (Trinidad) 3+ years ago I started going to Jenks & Son. What drew me to the store was the feeling of being welcomed. From my start in 2016 going to the store there was no gap between management and employees. My first experience going there was to replace a key for my motorcycle bike. The gentlemen working there did not have the 1973 (special cut key) but he was more than helpful in looking up things on the computer and pointing me in the write direction. In 2017 I remember a young gentleman that is an artist and builds things out of wood was more than knowledgeable and even lent a hand in educating me on how to go about creating a wooden cleat to mount a 150 pound wooden mirror on the wall. He even helped me with other hardware pieces I could utilize for my budding metal jewelry accessories business. I can recall all of the times stepping into the tools section and seeing two smiling gentleman "that actually know my name and my girlfriends name" and always helpful and always took the initiative to help us out and educate us when we needed guidance on the best screws to use be it metric or standard, as well as how it would hold up at high heat. Fast forward 2018 and now going into 2019. The gentleman that helped me replace my 45 year old motorcycle key and the specialist wood maker no longer work there. We are still ecstatic every-time we see the two gentleman in the hardware section. The young lady at the front desk and the young gentleman who from time to time works up stairs. The are familiar faces that have been working there for some time and have encountered those within the neighborhood that they provide a service too. "Times are a changing" What sticks out to me is an experience that we had that will not go un noticed. Just about four to five months ago May-June 2018 timeframe I went to the store with my girlfriend to buy home garden and cleaning supplies. As my lady and I went to find our things we noticed newer employees following us around the store. If we turned an aisle someone there somehow happened to be dusting or moving something. When we made our way downstairs to look for glass "Ball" Jars we noticed employees watching over us from the balcony like hawks. Keep in mind I've lived off 14th St for well over 12+ years and have never encountered anything on this magnitude at Logan Ace Hardware (14th St), True Value (Dupont Circle), nor Home Depot or even Lowes! This is not the Jenks & Sons that I know. I do stop in from time to time and notice that I'm not the only one experiencing something like this. I take notice to the people that I see coming in just getting off work (construction workers, contractors, grandmothers, grand fathers, children, people. To me it is ironic that around the same time in June of 2018 Starbucks shut down over 8000 stores for a four training on on racial bias. I think it would be good for Jenks & Sons to consider something similar. You don't treat people like this. I'm still hopeful. What is Needed? Racial bias training is needed. Continue to engage your customers, continue to get to know those that are within your community that frequent your business. You have been at this for a long time and you know better. Your core values need to be re instilled. I just felt that this is something that you should know. read more

Pretty much your ideal neighborhood hardware store. Everyone who works here is really friendly and helpful. I've never had to look for someone to help me -- someone always checks in with me within a few minutes of walking through the door to see if I need help. And I get the same service whether I'm spending a lot on a big project or a couple dollars on picture hangers. Their selection of most things I need (hardware, tools, cleaning and painting supplies) is great -- I almost always find what I need. Of course, they are physically smaller than a big box store so they can't carry everything, but if you ever can't find something, they can usually get it delivered to the store within a day or two. My fiancé and I discovered this place about a week ago and we love it. It's located on Bladensburg Rd but has been in DC for ages. The owners/managers are very friendly and took my fiancé and I on a tour of the roof garden. Cultivate D.C. Employees are very knowledgeable especially Nate and Dan who personally showed us how they make their soil for the plants they grow. This is my go-to hardware store for all my home repair and adventurous project needs. I even get my laundry detergent here. Everyone in the store is extremely helpful, really takes the time to help understand your needs and will brainstorm with you when you're just not quite sure how to fix that broken whatever. The rooftop garden has a great selection of plants and the folks up there will help you find things that work in your space (sunny, shady, pots, etc.). I find the prices to be quite appropriate, and the superior customer service definitely offsets the rare the instances where something may seem a little pricier than I expected. Everything is well-organized and easy-to-find. Even the Hillman screws and nuts are always perfectly neat and tidy. (As a former hardware store employee, I know how hard it is to keep the section straight!) They have a good paint selection (I did my entire apartment two years ago and the paint is holding up well) and they also cut keys. I believe there's a repair shop for tools and equipment, but I've never had to use that service. This is definitely my favorite store in D.C. We have relied on them ever since, and especially "Wink" at the back counter, who has gone over and above to ensure that we always had what we needed for our home.
