It's a store with small town feel in the middle of a big city. The staff welcomes you right as you step in the door. With just a brief flash of my lightbulb, a staff member at the counter pointed me to the wall of lightbulbs to replace it in the next room. Even as I was trying to figure out what to get, I could hear her helping the next customer with his own home item question. Looking around the store, there is probably something you will need in there not now, but maybe in the future. When the time comes, a friendly staff member will likely be there to help you navigate the shelves and find it. We have come here on other occasions for paint and screws. True Value is conveniently located in a street with many well loved businesses in Dupont Circle. Maybe get dinner with a side of hardware store? There is a bus stop a couple blocks down and it's a 10 minute walk from the circle. read more

Called about getting keys done and they said they could duplicate every mail key when we called. Two trips later and the mail key could not be duplicated. I think that they need to add to the blanks they have or have more options if the key does not work. Now we have quite a few keys that cannot be used for anything. read more

For sure, I was scammed here. I came to this location before to get keys made, and the price was 2ce as much as the most recent time I went. The guy making the keys didn't bother to tell me before that he had to charge me for premium keys for some reason so I ended up paying almost $30 to have five copies of a regular key made. Also, another man in the store was asking me about my shirt and not if I needed anything. I don't recommend this place at all. read more

Consistently has the best service of any hardware store I know. Even if you're not sure what you need, ask, and if the associate at hand can't think of it, that person will get the information from an another one via headset. And they're just friendly people. Very grateful for the help I received today. Came in with an antique lamp and needing a new bulb. I was given quick and friendly service and was led right away to the parts I needed to get the lamp up and working. I came home and was able to fix the lamp all on my own thanks to their help! Great hardware store with very friendly and helpful staff. They seem to have everything.

I would say the majority of the times, if not all, I've had excellent customer service. Usually as soon as you walk in, a voice from somewhere will greet you and/or ask how they can help. If you run into a different employee who isn't with someone, chances are he or she will also ask how they can help. I've been here so often in the last two years I generally know where things are but this place is literally a maze of finds and routes to get to and from different sections. If you get lost or need orienting, someone is usually close by who can walk you over to the right section and find that random item you are looking for. Yesterday, I anxiously waited for the store to open at 8 am; unfortunately, the guy behind the paint shop wasn't ready but his colleagues coordinated and unlocked the door to help. I'm glad they offer a variety of products in different sizes. Sometimes, you just need a little touching up and other times, it's a more major project. They offer pickup in the back, although I've never done that, and when I've called to ask if they carry something, they'll check. Customer service here really is exemplary. read more

Over 10 years later, and I would like to say still am so impressed with the store and the staff who help. I recently went to get anchors and screws ( not the most expensive items) to put up shower curtain bar, and the person spent a good amount of time and advised me, otherwise I would have just had to guess how to go about it. True Value on 17th in my neighborhood store. Beyond hardware they also have a full housewares dept. When you walk in you are greeting with "how can I help you?" and guided to the correct location. And...little known secret...they also sharpen kitchen knives! I have been patronizing this store for over 20 years and will continue to do so. read more

This is a great local neighborhood hardware store. It has everything we need and we make an effort to keep going back (and not visit the big box stores unless there is something they don't have). We were going to this hardware store before it became True Value. The folks that work there are the same people and they are knowledgable, friendly, and dedicated. I always feel welcome and I appreciate the help they can provide, especially as we are doing a lot of our own home improvement projects. If you need anything, I'd recommend coming in here and supporting a local business than going to a Home Depot or Lowes! I mostly just come here for keys and light bulbs. I'm giving them 5 stars because they are always welcoming and helpful. Today I went in and needed a key made to my apartment. I had previously gone to ACE in tenleytown The ace did not have the correct sized keys but made me one anyway and of course it didn't work. I desperately needed a key so a neighbor could walk my dog. When I went to Tru value and told them what happened and the key I had been given the guy said 'oh that wouldn't have even fit in your door' He correctly found the size key I needed. It worked! When i moved around the corner from a hardware store I didn't realize how often I would use it. The store is really confusing; there are lots of tiny rooms and also a back area. So I just ask for help when I walk in and get whatever I need in a few minutes. I come here for light bulbs, batteries, spare keys, one time I got some pieces of wood cut to fix my bed. Everyone working is always really friendly and knowledgeable. However, my dog Olive is probably True Value's biggest fan. I always bring her along on my shopping trips because she gets a treat and lots of attention. She has caught on quickly and will pull me inside when we walk by. And since she's so cute they will sometimes give her a treat even if I'm not buying anything. read more

True Value is my neighborhood hardware store. Every time I go in I am greeted with friendly, knowledgeable people. I have always found what I need, no matter how obscure. Don't assume the prices are higher than big box stores - there are good deals to be found AND you're not wasting time or transportation expense if you live close by. (There is parking available behind the store if you need to purchase something large.) Special shout out to the guy who works in the Hardware section (up the steps to the left of the main entrance). There are lots of great things up there and he's super helpful with a fantastic personality. Just today I left my bicycle helmet in the store. He ran after me and was delighted to get it back to me saying, "True is our Value." Made my day! read more

This hardware store is great! The people are so helpful, patient and personable. It's also amazing what crazy amount of supplies they have fit into the given space! Also, it's rare you find a shop so willing to accept returns. My only criticism is that they close fairly early for a city filled with people who have 9-6 jobs. read more

I can't believe I'm going against the Yelp grain on this one, but hopefully, gentle reader, you'll understand why in a few short sentences. I walked in on my lunch hour on a quest. My new kitty has been chewing on one of my lamp cords, which is dangerous to him as well as the possibility of starting an electrical fire. One solution that has worked for friends is putting wire loom (read: thick plastic tubing) around the cord so the cat cannot bite through it. This was the only hardware store withing walking distance of my office (and I'm being generous. It is 81 degrees as I write this.) I head in and look at the electrical section. I see tubing that may fit, but it's meant to hold 8-10 cords, not just one. I see another that is what I want, but it's not flexible (meant to run along a wall, so it was rigid). I was approached by a woman sales associate. Her: Do you need help? Me: Hi. Yes. See I have an issue - my cat is biting through one of my lamp cords. I need something to protect the cord, but this is too big and this is too inelastic. I'd need something about 1/8" diameter... I don't want him biting through any more. Her (deadpan): Kill the cat? Me: Um... what? Her: You should just spray some Windex on it. Me: (thinking) This girl is nuts. She is literally advising me to poison my cat. (speaking) Um. Maybe something like that. Her: What about aluminum tape? Me: That might work if it has the physical consistency of aluminum foil. Does it? Her: Basically. (to colleague) Can you take this guy? I need to run to the back. End scene. I left. Why the heck would anyone go to this place? She told me to kill my cat then tried to get me to POISON HIM. Can you imagine if I was an idiot and thought "yeah. Windex I bet he won't like that!" I recognize (only after reading other Yelp comments..) that the comment that I should kill my cat might have been sarcastic, but the Windex advice was a little too dangerous and sincere. Also, aluminum tape is nothing like aluminum foil as far as feel or noise (e.g. the things that would deter a cat). So that was a test that her knowledge failed. Didn't have what I needed, obnoxious staff, and anti-kitten. 1 star is generous. read more

Wow, I feel a little unqualified to write a review of a hardware store. It's kind of like my boyfriend reviewing Bergdorf Goodman... what the hell does he know?! Nevertheless, I only have kind things to say about True Value. The customer service is good, the key cutting is extremely quick, and I've painlessly rented hand trucks from them a few times. But other than that, this is definitely a hardware store for the handyman. And I am not a handyman. So it's all Greek to me. However, it is pretty handy to have hand trucks and key cutting a few minutes from my home. This is my go-to hardware store and it hasn't failed me yet. read more

They've got that handy dandy "home wares" section, that just sucks you in looking for a broom and spits you out with place mats, paper towel holders, special gadgets and Damn! forgot the broom!!! When I needed a run-of-the-mill house key copied, my first thought was: big chain hardware store. Surely we would be in and out in five minutes. My boyfriend and I first tried the Home Depot on Rhode Island, but their power was out. Not really their fault. I tried again at a Lowe's in Virginia. I presented them with the key in question only to find that despite their massive selection of everything else, they could not copy this particular type of key because it didn't fit any of the molds they had in stock. My boyfriend and I had to leave the door unlocked every time one of us left the apartment for another week before I could find the time to try again. (You can imagine how safe I felt about my person and my stuff during this period.) Enter True Value. I came in, I presented them with my key, and less than five minutes later I had its twin in my hand. During the intervening time I had a little wander through the aisles and found myriad light bulbs, doorknobs, batteries, and other standard household fix-it fare for reasonable prices. I'm in the middle of a move, so a hardware store run was way overdue. It became emergent when one of the casters broke off of the set of shelves I was using to store the supplies in the packing area. The screw was so bent that I couldn't reattach it properly, leaving my organizing shelf too off kilter to be usable. And I was not optimistic that they would be able to find a replacement, as these sorts of parts are usually custom and not stocked by most hardware stores. But this place has just about everything, so I figured I would give it a try. The service here is attentive and friendly. If they see you wandering around by yourself, they will check in to make sure you don't need direction. I brought the broken caster with me, (which I recommend doing. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the variety and just grab something. Then you get home and realize that what you bought is twice as big as what you were trying to replace!) So I showed it to one of the men working there and he spent ten minutes researching whether the part was available in their catalog, which it was not. This was already head and shoulders above the service you would receive at a big box hardware store. Being desperate, I asked if maybe there was a way to take the caster apart and get a new screw in there. I asked this thinking he would tell me how to do it. He actually went into the back and FIXED IT FOR ME, then wrote down all of the info I would need to order the part online, These guys really know their stuff and will point you in the right direction to get what you need. Returns are also quick and easy. I recommend them highly. They also have a cute home goods store upstairs, which is a godsend when you just need a small thing and don't feel like schlepping down to Target or Bed Bath and Beyond.
