I came in there, like an idiot, looking for anchored screws to hang a floating shelf. The guy (with a pearl type earring): "What kind of wall are you putting this into?" Me: "The kind you need that stud finder for." Guy: "Does it come with screws?" Me: *doesn't realize he's talking to me* Guy: "Does it come with screws?" Me: "Oh..me..I'm sorry. I am acting so spacey." Guy: "It's OK. It doesn't matter how we get there. The end result matters." So he found me my anchors, my screws and some painter's tape. When I used to live in Dupont, I did a kitchen renovation, and True Value was good in a pinch. Today, I stopped in, and I needed a smallish dowel rod, cut to specifications. Even though the store was crowded, they promptly tended to me. Good service, decent selection for such limited space, and friendly staff who remember you are the great qualities of this place. Great little hardware store tucked away. I had decided to replace my shower head, and realized I needed a bigger wrench. I was really surprised and very glad to find this place right in the middle of AdMo/Dupont area-- was afraid I would have to somehow make my way into one of those giant Home Depots that they only build in the suburbs to get the right tool. This place is packed with goodie and anything you want. The woman who helped me was very knowledgable and sort through all the options of tools that would work. They also have an adjoining home goods section, where you can pick up random things household things (like picture frames), without having to head out to a Target in the burbs or overpaying at places like Macy's. Let me preface this with: I know nothing about being handy. I came into True Value last Saturday looking for a drill because my apartment has concrete walls. The lady at the counter was very helpful - not only did she find me screws, a drill, and drill bit, she told me HOW to use everything. Very grateful and fool proof! I lived just a few blocks from this place -always passed it but never stopped on. Ironically I am moving out of Dupont and have been here three times in the past week to get moving supplies! I never even knew there was a hardware store in Dupont until I was searching for moving boxes and I couldn't find any good, large free ones in any stores. When I stopped at Safeway across the street one of the employees recommended I go to True Value and buy boxes there. When I walked in I was greeted automatically and a young lady came to my side and asked if I needed help. She grabbed the boxes, asked what other supplies I needed and rang me out. Afterwards she thanked me for my patronage and said 'have a nive day'. I can't remember the last time I heard that in my shopping experience. I had the same experience when I returned a few days later, on my moving day. The employees were very friendly, made conversation and were very eager to help me. It reminds me of Rochester, where every store has a neighborhood feel and all the employees know you by name. I wish I had come to this store earlier in my Dupont living stint but glad I came here. This is a great hardware store with a real personal touch. I needed to drill some tiles and had to pick up a special tile/glass drill bit. They had what I needed, the clerk told me how to use the bit (slower is better) without my even asking, the project was a complete success!! Thus is s well-stocked hardware store that is special. I came into True Value today literally on the verge of tears. I am taking the bar exam right now and I am a mess. I threw out my back either from studying, or running to cool off or both - who goes to the chiropractor at 28? Me. I absentmindedly left a teflon pan on the stove -- twice -- and apparently breathed in toxic fumes and if I was a bird I would be dead. I have guy drama. I don't sleep. I don't see people. I am miserable. And to add insult to injury, my key broke off in my deadbolt, making it *physically* impossible to leave my apartment -- as if it was practically possible for me to ever get out and away from studying things like implied reciprocal negative easements. Don't ask me what that is. I DON'T KNOW. And so I called the store today to ask for a locksmith referral, and the woman I spoke with said it was easy and I could do it myself if I wanted. She explained how to take the broken deadbolt off the door and that I should bring it down. I came to the store with my deadbolt in pieces (and me in pieces, really), and she (Amber, I think was her name) found me a new lock, explained why it was good, told me how to install it, and said I would be fine. She said to breathe, and that I would pass the bar. And now I have a new lock on my door and it works. It is the best thing that has happened in my life in weeks. Thanks. read more

There's always someone there to answer a question about how to complete a project and they've even answered questions for me over the phone after I've gotten home and totally forgotten everything they just told me in the store. I love this store. You don't have to go to Target in the burbs to pick up your housewares items! After moving into a new condo in Dupont, I needed a step ladder, broom and other cleaning stuff you can't find at Safeway. I wasn't sure where to go but then I heard that the True Value has a housewares store. Sure enough, I got everything I needed -- plus more! Since my first trip, I've gone there a few more times for a soap dispenser, shelf liners, stuff like that. Plus, at the hardware store they had everything I needed for household chores. A bonus? The guy working at the housewares store walked back to my place with some of my stuff because I couldn't carry it all myself!! He was super nice. I will keep going back to this neighborhood stop. The only complaint I have is that a few things I've bought there have rang up for more than the price marked. I'm sure if I said something, they would have fixed it, but both times I didn't catch it until I was out the door. Also, some of the things seem pretty expensive, but that's what you pay for convenience. read more

The people who work here are totally amazing. I'm a dummy when it comes to fixing things around the house. Yet, with their help, I was able to fix my closet door so it stays closed. They helped me find the part I needed, explained how to install it, and even helped me adjust the part. I can't say enough good things about their level of expertise and friendliness. Very interesting business that reminded us of a store called Cole Hardware in the Cole Valley of San Francisco. It's a maze of different rooms in an old Washington neighborhood and they have a great staff of people that greet you at the door and guide you through finding everything you need knowing that if you were left on your own you would get lost. Our guy was great in leading us right to what we needed and checked us out in just a few minutes. Highly recommend!!! read more

I've been here many times for random odds and ends. Most recently, I needed slats cut to put under my mattress on my bedframe. Prices were reasonable, I was helped immediately upon arrival, and the whole process was efficient. Wood was cut to exactly the dimensions I needed, and I was able to park right behind the store (there are hidden spots!) and throw the wood in the back of my shagin wagon. Great overall experience and definitely recommend this place for all but the most involved hardware projects. read more

Great Customer Service! I had some keys made for a new home. I had previously tried (and failed) to get keys made successfully at several Ace stores in DC. At the recommendation of friends, I gave True Value a shot. They were friendly and helpful. I had 4 keys made and (admittedly) one of them was a dud. I returned it and asked for the key to be remade. Not only did they remake the key for free-- the clerk said he thought the dud key just needed a little buffering-- which he did. So now the previously dud key works, and I got a bonus key made for free! read more

Truly the kind of business I want to promote. I agree with all of the positive reviews and I regularly travel to this store just because the service is excellent. I had some glass cut and there have been issues with the company that does the cutting but store employees have contacted me apologizing, explaining and taking full responsibility for my purchase and their end. The True Value Housewares store carried all the canning needs I was looking for without having to get a zip car and leave the District. They had half-pint and pint jars in palettes. There were some loose jars of larger sizes, but mostly pint size and smaller. There were also new lids. I picked up a canning funnel and jar gripper while I was there too. read more

The staff is definitely helpful and honest. My bathroom sink was clogged so i headed to the store to buy some products to poor in my sink. The guy actually gave me a tip to try to remove the clog without buying any chemical products (try with an unfold hanger). I tried and it worked! I love having this store in the neighborhood. The staff are knowledgeable and they've always had what we've needed for little jobs around the condo (e.g. scrapers, caulking, 35W halogen bulbs, curtain rods, light switches, etc.). They also have a separate area for home decor and supplies - stuff like shower curtains, kitchen gear, small appliances... Selection is not as comprehensive as what you'd find in a big box store, but this sure beats trekking to the burbs. read more

I don't think I've had service this good since 1959! OK I wasn't alive then, but it feels like a store might have been then. A staff person (maybe the owner?) actually screwed on my bike basket for me once because I was asking a lot of questions about the type of screw to buy. So he walked out and did it for me, without my asking whatsoever! Then yesterday he also spent a long time talking about furniture paint finish with me, giving tips etc. In each case, I wasn't spending much money, but they took quite a bit of time with me. Staff was super quick to mock me and ask if I could use the power tools I was inquiring about. This place rocks my world! As a self taught home improvement person type, I can't say how grateful I am to folks here for their help. First, it is always easy to find someone to help you (unlike some large warehousy type stores), second, their goal is to help you, not to sell to you. I have had sales people actually tell me that I don't need a more expensive instrument because the cheaper one will work for my purposes. That's just precious in my book. Third, you can be in and out in 15 mins.. no standing in line, then walking 10 mins to your car. This place has a true neighborhood feel and I will keep going back. That being said, this is probably not the place to come to if you are working on a large job. This is a small store.. it carries everything you need for small fixes like broken faucets, or hinges. No need for Home Depot. My local hardware store takes good care of me. I am savvy enough to want to "do it myself" for most home improvement undertakings but not so savvy that I can do it without good guidance and instruction. Thats what you'll get from the friendly professionals at True Value. They dont just point you in in the direction of what you're looking for, they teach you how to use it and make sure that you have everything that you need. These folks exemplify customer service. Even though the store is small and cramped, I dont think I have ever walked in and not walked out with exactly what I was looking for. Its quite impressive if you think about it. Once you have the "nuts and bolts" be sure to visit Housewares next door. They are similarly well-stocked with pots and pans and shower curtains etc. This duo of stores is like a Target & Home Depot without the strip mall. read more

Excellent selection, extremely helpful staff. This looks like a small hardware store from the street, but they manage to cram tons of stuff in there. Lumber, Plumbing, Paint, Lighting, just about everything you'd find a Home Depot. Plus, the staff are very knowledgeable and willing to help. they've taught me how to do plumbing installs, patch drywall holes, securely wall mount a TV and many other projects. They also have a housewares store in the same building that has just about everything you might want: kitchen cleaners, bathroom rugs, dishes, martini glasses, shower curtains, etc.... I'm not sure how they manage to get so much stuff in such small stores, but if you don't see it just ask. I'm sure they have whatever you're looking for. read more

First of all, let me say that it's great to see a few small, local hardware stores remaining in business. Since they can't do the volume of a "Home Depot", they're got to compete with convenience and expertise...both of which they do very well. For their size, they've got a good selection of merchandise, parts & tools jammed into every nook & cranny, just like any self-respecting hardware store. After you've cornered one of their employees, they generally have a good handle on where to find what you need...and more importantly helping you get right supplies for your repairs. These guys are at their best when you need to pick up a few supplies for a job at home or cut some copies of keys. Their prices are too high for me to think about buying any of their tools (save in an emergency) and if I was working on a big job, I'd make the trek to Home Depot for the price...provided that I knew exactly what I wanted. Bottom line: 4 stars for service and convenience, 3 stars for price....so 3.5-4 star average read more

This True Value location has great customer service, knowledgeable staff, and impressive selection. The store is much bigger than it appears, with lawn care and housewares in separate rooms that aren't obvious when you first enter -- just ask an employee for assistance. We went in here on a Sunday (always a busy hardware store day) with a punch list of items we needed to fix in an apartment. We were greeted smiles. One gentleman helped us. He took us to the plumbing section, the paint section, and then the key section. In each department we discussed our problems, and he patiently waited while I showed him photos. This is type of customer service you never receive at a big box store, especially on a Sunday. He made our Sunday projects as simple and painless as possible. Thanks for excellent customer service. This place is GREAT. They keep a lot of people on staff at all times, and not just because they needed to hire their cousin or something - they are there to help you with your project. I have walked in there and said "I want to put up shelves" and they walked me through every step of the way and gave me every supply. Once, a guy spent like 30 minutes trying to help me find a pipe component that apparently exists nowhere in the universe (otherwise, they'd have it). This place may seem small, but it is cavernous - they have everything. Other requests that they've helped me with include: bird feed, shower curtains (go to their sister place next door), keys, potting soil, a shower head, light bulbs, and paint brushes with some dried paint on them for a Halloween costume. Generally this place is great, but sadly there is one employee, an older white gentleman with glasses, who really brings this place down. If you've had the pleasure of his "service" than you know what I'm talking about. The guys a real asshole. And that's fine, you can be an asshole, but you probably shouldn't be working service. Can't find a better job? Then check your assholeness at the door. Example: was here the other day looking for speaker wire. I spoke to someone on the phone who said they had exactly what i needed. I asked this guy where the specific wire was, he said they didn't have it. I said they told me on the phone they did, so maybe you can check. He insisted they didn't have it and cut me off whenever I asked further questions. Of course, when i asked somebody else, who woulda thought, the product magically appeared. So, lesson here--don't bother asking the crotchety old white dude for help. Because he clearly doesn't care about making a sale and he clearly has no idea what's in his store. But other than that, place usually has what i need and people are friendly. read more

It's like a magician's hat, or the closet of your dreams. You can't believe this tiny store, smaller than the bathroom at Lowe's, has just what you need, but it always does. Even my dad, whose garage is a landmine of tools, was impressed when he insisted that he needed this obscure tool (which he'll never use again) and found it here, after his many Home Depots and Lowe's (Lowe'ses?) failed him. These people are incredibly helpful, especially if you look completely lost. (Fill the tub before caulking if you don't want the caulk to separate from the tub or the walls due to the weight of the water when you draw a bath.) Logan Hardware a few blocks away has its merits (some hot employees), but I'm sticking with Coke Original. read more
