I've come here repeatedly for a few projects and DIY fixes. The staff are super friendly and helpful. I've gone for several paint purchases, and they've walked me through the different paint options and what I might want/need. They've also got a great selection of items for simple apartment fixes. I will say, there are a few (limited) items that have found that are at a slightly higher price compared to target next door. When you're in this part of town, you really have limmited options when it comes to hardware stores. This store is the only show in town, even when it comes to something as simple as a box of nails. I came here yesterday, and thankfullynthey were still open late afternoon. We recently had our house painted, and we have been in the process of installing closet shelves. However unbenounced to me, my little one was playing around with the small box of screws and he apprently.misplaced them. That was my motivation to come to this hardware store. I needed a specific size screw so we could finish the jib of installing the shelves,and finally move on with our lives. What an odd location! We came here on foot, so you need to enter on Wisconsin at the Target/Container Store entrance. Take the escalator down, then go into the parking garage. Yes, strange, I know. Turn right once in the garage and then you'll see the entrance. Lots of items pack a punch in this still small-ish store. Three stars only because they didn't have either thing we needed--we were looking for a fan since our HVAC had broken and it was taking days to figure out the problem. But they only had heater fans. And we were looking for herb and lavender seeds. The seed selection was sparse except for vegetables. This isn't our neighborhood Ace, we just happened to be in the area running other errands, so I think we will stick to our own neighborhood next time. read more

I am glad this Ace Hardware is here. I remember this location from two decades ago, when it had a Sears department store, once a colossus of retail, before they built luxury condos atop the retail. The Ace has parking and is right at a Metro stop. It could not be more convenient. With that in mind, I will add this is not a giant store. I have not performed a scientific survey, and I have seen neighborhood places with the Ace brand that are even tinier. But this outlet is on the small side. The best means to think of it is as a bonus to the Target with which it is co located. We had keys made last time we stopped in. So consider it highly convenient for that sort of thing. read more

Went in recently to replace a small chandelier bulb and took it with me to make sure I got the correct size. I asked the clerk where could I find it, and he said "over there" and pointed to two aisles away, and went back to chitchatting with the other clerks at the cash register - very slow day. No offer to help. Couldn't find it and left, and no one looked over, just kept chitchatting away. I'll check out the Ace in Takoma Park as those folks are always friendly and very helpful. The store is very crowded both with merchandise and with people. The prices for live plants seemed much higher than what I would expect to pay, and there is no logical organization to the plants, some scattered here, others scattered in odd nooks hard to get to. It's not an enjoyable experience to shop. Also, evidently pets are allowed in the store, which is no issue for me, but large dogs + small cramped space + plants all along the floor does not sound wise to me. I would not return. read more

Ace Hardware is excellent, with friendly and helpful employees. However, their water fountains have been non-operational for awhile, and it's misleading and frustrating for thirsty customers. I was leaving the adjacent Target store when I stopped into here. The Tenleytown Target and Ace hardware share a parking garage. I was looking for ice melt or rock salt. It had been in short supply the last couple days due to some heavy snow on Sunday evening and a little bit more snow a few days later. The small Target store was out of it. I walked into the Ace store expecting that if located the price was going to be higher. Instead I saw a limited variety of ice melt product across from the entrance. There was a bag for only $6.99 and some other winter weather home and car accessories. There was even a jug of pet friendly ice melt product that was a little more pricey. This Ace store is smaller but has a lot of the Ace items you have come to expect especially for the spring. It was busy with customers checking out and coming and going the whole time. Shout out to Ace Tenleytown for outstanding customer service -- I came in to buy 1" x 1" lumber, which they had only in 10 foot lengths. I couldn't fit that in my car, so asked them to cut it for me. He asked how what length I needed, I told him I actually needed lots of pieces 11 3/4" and 17" lengths. He offered to cut them for me -- 43 cuts, at no charge! And then -- bonus! when I lost my parking ticket he went to to the exit to let me out. I was delighted at the amazing service -- recommend them highly! read more

I went back here to get my ceiling paint tinted. I must admit that this time around, the service was 100% better. Someone greeted me at the door and the guy taking care of the paint was knowledgeable and answering my questions. However, when I was getting my paint tinted, he noticed that the prior salesman sold me the incorrect base # for one of the cans. That kind of sucked that the prior saleman had done that. Great place to find items for projects. Here visiting my daughter and was immediately given a "to do" list. This was the place I came. Once I found the entrance in the parking garage the staff greeted me when I walked in. I told him what I was looking for and what I was fixing and he had some better recommendation for me. Ace of Base...ments This is my go-to hardware store since I'm a Tenley Townie! Besides, They had all the parts needed to convert a 10-gallon Igloo cooler into a beer-making mash tun. That's saying something. You recall those "Survey of Western Literature" Norton anthologies (when you were actually awake in class)? That's a decent desription of this Ace. It has a little of everything, but not a lot of anything. Didn't Abe Lincoln say something like "You can sell all your nuts and bolts sometimes, and some of your washers all of the time...."? Maybe I'm misremembering. The highlights of this Ace are that they have quick supplies for clogged toilets and other minor plumbing emergencies, enough garden supplies for most jobs (including mulch and topsoil), vacuums, and just enough electrical parts to get you in trouble. Don't come here to buy in bulk for renovation. Come here for the proper diet and nutrition needed for an old house to keep operating without major problems. The pimple-sporting high-school help here is unfailingly polite and willing to search for what you need. They'll haul mulch bags to your car, cut tubing to length, dig up stainless steel #4 washers, and look successfully nonplussed when you ask for a 3/4 inch flared copper barb for your brewhouse. All in all, I'd rather schlep here than anywhere for the basics of daily living in an old house. read more

Great things about this store: 1. Location: right below Best Buy at Tenleytown. If you take the metro you barely have to leave the station (exit West side). 2. Customer service: I'm no carpenter, but there were plenty of sales reps around all asking if I needed help. I explained my issue, showed them what tools I was working with, and they knew exactly what I should do and which products I needed. Also, everyone knew exactly where I should go for which products (wish CVS could do that!). Finally, all the cash registers were open. I was in and out in about 5 minutes. This place has the best customer service ever. They greet you right when you come in and ask to help you find what you are looking for. I needed help and they pointed me the right aisle and recommended item selections for me. It really helped because I was in a rush and I did not want to spend forever in the store. On several occasions I been here to get a few odds and ends for my apartment, and I don't have to spend a decade skimming the aisles. Everything is neatly arranged and it just has a good neighborhood hardware store feel. I also had my keys made here and it was higher priced than a regular mom-and-pop hardware store back home. The service is excellent, but they need help with line control. I was there when they only had one register open until someone else jumped on board to help. They ask you if you want to open a hardware card which I don't, but don't ask twice like some other places... ahem Victoria's Secret. I don't like feeling pressured to open a card when I am rarely there, but if I was a craftswoman then I might consider it. read more

The customer service at this store is great. We just moved and needed to make copies of our keys. We went in on Thursday and had copies made, only to find out they didn't work. On Friday we went back and a manager personally helped us in having our replacement keys made. She told us if we had anymore problems then to just come back and they'd make us another copy, but this time the keys were perfect. I've also come in with very vague descriptions of things I need (a bed part that went missing from my Ikea bed and I didn't have a picture, just what I knew it looked like),and gotten help. Amazing little hidden gem for DC. I have lived here for 3 years and never noticed it. Instead I was hitting small hardware stores and having to order most gear online, which is not preferable with physical product or mechanical parts. No need for that anymore, this place has most everything you need, will get it if they don't and best (and most important) of all, incredibly helpful, bright and friendly staff. The latter is huge. I am a DIYer and fixaholic but not a professional. I have questions the internet just isn't set up to answer (sometimes simple and silly but it's nice to have a person explaining the differences than reading 90 random reviews by people you don't know and could be "bots" hawking competing products for all you know). These guys hit the mark dead-on. The place was crawling with staff, I did not feel like I was bothering anybody (DC'ers know the dreadful feeling when people in the store supposedly there for service make is seem like you're asking too much of them, e.g. Columbia Heights Best Buy), plenty of folks always asking if I needed anything, leaving me alone when I didn't but slowly and clearly explaining when I did. I can't say enough about them. Awesome. Heading there today and am looking forward to it. Finding this little gem will help me finish tons of projects I just didn't have the McMaster Carr bandwith for (definitely best online hardware store but lot's to go through alone) or just thought I would not find good help in DC. It's no Hechingers, but the Tenley Town Ace is worth three stars. It's metro accessible and has a little bit of everything. I'm not sure if this is PC or not, but it often appears to be staffed by local high school kids, so I was not expecting great service, but they have been very nice and proactive in asking me if I need help finding anything. It's not a huge store, but slightly larger than the neighborhood places you find around town, so you may find things others don't have the room to stock and avoid a trip to the burbs. Store is located in the garage below the Best Buy and Container Store. I have found myself heading upstairs to the CS when I can't find things at Ace. read more

I went into Ace because my car key fob broke in half. Mr. Laurence Horne helped me find the right key fob but they didn't have it in stock so he helped me repair my existing fob. For $25 you can rent a steam cleaner for 24 hours. This will save you hundreds of dollars if you want to clean carpets in your home or apartment. You will not believe how disgusting you are until you use one of these things. (I think they have them at Home Depots too, I think they're called 'Rug Doctors'.) All the paint colors in the world, great prices. Something like $11 a quart for semi-glossy, and now my walls look bright and great. How to get there: Go into the big building at the Tenleytown stop that houses the Best Buy and Container Store, find a down escalator, take it down to the underground parking garage. The main entrance is from the parking garage, the whole store is underground. Young and funny staff, good attitudes. I wish they had plants and better selections for lamps. read more

I went in to buy a $10-$20 air filter I walked out with a $4 one after I was advised quoting studies that unless I had allergies, I would be better off with the cheaper air filter. I wanted to post this review mainly because of an experience yesterday involving one of their young staff members named Justin, who deserves some kind of award for customer service over and beyond the call of duty. One simply does not often see, these days, people as helpful as Justin was to me and my wife. Because of some leg problems, I am using a walker, and the particular one I'm using has two wheels in front but in back two feet onto which we had put some plastic "ski-type" sliders. At some point the day before yesterday one of the sliders broke, with the "ski" part lost but the part of the shaft that is embedded in the walker leg still inside, and wedged so tightly that nothing my wife could do, either to pry it out or to get it out by any other means, worked. And there was no way a new slider could be put into that leg of the walker without removing that piece of tough, thick plastic. We went into this hardware store hoping that we might be able to get some type of tool that could get this piece out. When my wife asked the store clerk about this, he said, "Let me take a look at it," and proceeded, first to try to pry it out or saw it with a sort of Swiss-Army-knife type of tool he had in his pocket, and then he went into the stock and got a power drill, which finally did the job. He made no sale in this interaction, but made me very happy. That is, as I said, customer service over and beyond the call of duty. read more

I LOVE this place. I am a perpetual do-it-yourselfer living in a 90 year old building. I am in here at least once a week for something. The store is tiny compared to big box stores, but it is an absolute model of how to stock a small store optimally - wish they could teach that to the drug stores, convenience markets, and grocery stores, all of whom are in a race to see how few things they can stock. I usually find what I am looking for and it is extremely convenient by Metro or even driving (free parking). Staff are friendly and helpful. read more

Today I absolutely demeaned by a worker who did not know what I was looking for despite that I had the item in my hand. He then reluctantly said it was in aisle five. Fair enough. Despite multiple visits to The Container Store which is directly above this Ace, I had never been here. However I swung by the Ace the other day. Pros: On-site parking in underground garage, parking validation, also next door to metro; super-helpful people and lots of them; large selection of items; good return policy Cons: Not much really, hmmm. very small check-out area may cause a line to purchase. Oh and no cell reception so if you need to look up something (I had to check the bulb I needed for a lamp), you may go out of the store and upstairs to the street level. I picked up citronella candles, lightbulbs, screening, wd-40 and a host of other things I needed. I had at least 3 different employees ask me if I needed any help. I didn't at the time, but a few minutes later I did need help and there was no shortage of it. Everyone was polite and friendly. I went back the next day to return some things and I had the same experience - friendly helpful people with no hassle about the returns. Totally recommend! read more

I don't give out too many 5-star ratings, but this place deserves it. When working in retail, customer service is of utmost importance, sometimes even higher ranked than pricing. Ace Hardware delivers on this in such a way that I believe it's the friendliest, most useful, best hardware store here in D.C. I've never left here without feeling able to successfully finish that project at home. The hardest thing to deal with about Ace Hardware is simply finding it. But don't worry, I got you covered. First off it's right next to the metro - the west side of Tenleytown AU metro station. You walk out that station and go into the building direclt in front of you. Take the escalators to the right so you're downstairs and walk out to the parking garage. Make a right and voila - Ace Hardware ready for your every need (in hardware at least!) I'd say the only other thing is that the place is pretty tight - not too much space, but having the help of great staff you'll easily find what you're looking for. Oh - one cool thing I just did this weekend was find out you can rent drills here. Only $10 for 24 hours. Go get something done! read more
