My Subaru key fob battery was very low, but the Gods were kind enough to allow me to drive from Poolesville where I had been, to Strosniders in Bethesda, Unfortunately, the folks I called first at ASAP Locksmith were MIA, after 2 calls, and telling me to keep my phone close because someone would be calling me immediately. Stosniders in Bethesda was so welcoming. It is simply their culture. They are happy and totally professional. Sadly, after coming here for so many years - ever since it opened (we were there on opening day), we are saying "no mas" to the Kensington store. Why? Most would say high prices - but there is a convenience factor, and a safety factor (no sketchy characters in the parking lot - are you paying attention, Home Depot Aspen Hill?), and most importantly, the regular dollars-off coupons, which make the higher prices somewhat more palatable. So lets explore for a moment. Wouldn't you think that after so many years of coming here 2-3 times a week on average (sometimes more, sometimes less), at least someone there - one, maybe more - would recognize us? But it never fails. No hello, no "nice to see you," nothing. Instead, it never fails - one particular cashier NEVER fails to ask, "are you an Ace Rewards member?" Well, let's see - I was here yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that ... and you asked the same question - and I'm wearing the same paint-stained t-shirt - and I just handed you one of your coupons (which are for members only) - so, what do you think? So irritating. But, not the end of the world ... until the final straw. First, I'm in the nuts-and-bolts, serve-yourself isle - been there at least 100 times - and the same fellow (older) walks up and says, "so, do you know how to count up your items and mark them down?" Yes, old timer, I think I can handle that - let me see - four bolts, four washers, four nuts - yup, got it!! Again, not the end of the world - but really, how many times does this guy have to see me ... okay, never mind. Got what I needed and head to the checkout - I have lots and lots of items, about $100 in total. I avoid the "are you an Ace Rewards member" fellow and head to the other cashier. No hello, how are you, etc. She rings up the items and I put down my $10 off coupon - and she says, "that coupon won't work." Her logic - one of the items (and I have many) is "already discounted" by one dollar. So I say, okay, take that item and charge it separately ... she struggles with that a bit, and I still have over $50 and therefore, $10 off. And she says, "that coupon isn't valid because these items aren't discountable." So I say, "which items - all but one are Ace branded items - and where does it say on the back of the coupon that any one specific items here is not discountable?" Of course, the coupon says nothing of the sort - just some vague boilerplate language. After some further back-and-forth, she clearly is incapable of explaining her reasoning and clearly is making up the rules as she goes along. So I say, "tell you what - no sale - and tell the manager that you caused a no-sale of $100 of goods, over made-up rules that you can't explain." Remember, this is over a $10 coupon, which is a 10% discount off already inflated prices. (I also had the lesser $5 off $35 coupon, but - no deal!). I end up going to the big box store (Lowes Gaithersburg) and getting the same items, for much less money than what I would have spent, even if she had granted the discount. In a nutshell - what should be a friendly, local hardware store, where maybe not everyone knows your name but hopefully someone does, is nothing of the sort. Just a high-priced, limited-inventory place that I will avoid - and that, after spending thousands and thousands of dollars at this store over the years. We were so glad when it opened, replacing Hardware City - which was the world's WORST hardware store. But, we suppose the ghosts of poor customer service and overpriced items have not abandoned the building. So - Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice - avoid those ghosts of the past and endure the big boxes. One day maybe we will have a local customer-oriented store - the Bethesda store is somewhat better, but parking is a nightmare - sad to say, but unless it's an absolute emergency, we won't spend another penny in this store - ever. read more

I recently had occasion to purchase a dehumidifier at Strosnider's Bethesda store. It is often confusing to buy appliances but Richard Hummel, appliance assistant, was ready, willing and able. I trusted him immediately because of his warm and supportive presentation. He assured me of the quality and efficiency of a dehumidifier big enough to cover 1500 sq. ft and patiently answered all my questions. He made me so comfortable I started to check out other appliances. So far the dehumidifier has performed just as Mr. Hummel described. I felt like i had met my guardian angel. This review purely pertains to the Benjamin Moore paint color consultant Freda. I just went in for help choosing exterior paint for my home - obviously a major decision. She right away chastised me for painting this time of the year (we are not painting this time of the year I'm simply getting ahead of my project). I pulled several Samplize colors and had them laid out, asking about undertones, what goes together, and showed her multiple pictures of my vision. She could not have been more dismissive, told me she can't judge anything by a picture, and everything looks different in real life. Yes Freda I'm aware of this I'm just looking for some guidance from my professional. She never made eye contact, turned her back to me and basically was done helping me. I feel more frustrated than before I walked in and I'm totally turned off from coming here for paint again. What is the purpose of having an expert on staff if they are unwilling and unable to help a customer? I usually give people the benefit of the doubt but from start to finish this was a completely miserable and uncomfortable experience. read more

I ordered a Masterbuilt smoker for my husband as an anniversary gift. It was built at the store and delivered to Washington, DC, but it was not working. We had several events the following week that required a working smoker, so we were in full panic mode. Chuck and his team made numerous trips into DC throughout the week to replace parts and, eventually, the grill entirely to ensure we had a working smoker before the weekend. We were afraid we would be left high and dry to deal with Masterbuilt directly, but that was not the case at all. I am so thankful for the quick communication and service of his team. This store has many lights on the verge of burning out and are flickering. There are more flickering lights than burned out lights, and it is annoying and headache inducing. I'm sure it is inconvenient to change them with such high ceilings, but it is important to have working lights for visually impaired customers and with so much inventory. I mentioned this to several employees but it wasn't clear if they were going to actually do anything. Also many aisles are very narrow and can't accommodate a shopping cart. Otherwise it's good selection and quality. read more

Very friends service. Prices, especially delivery, are fair. I ordered a Weber grill from them. They delivered promptly, courteously, and with a gift bag to boot! I had ordered the same grill from Amazon, who promised delivery and then called day of to cancel the order, saying they didn't actually have the item to ship . What happened to all of the skilled workers? This store used to have great friendly staff that really knew about home repair. Now there seem to be a lot of hourly workers with little to no experience or skill. When you ask about a product in the store now, you are likely to get the same answer you would get from asking any teenager on the street. Had a great experience at this place. Called to get to see if items were in stock. I spoke to Rick, he was kind enough to bring the [11] items up front to do curbside pick up. I decided to go inside and there I had my items ready, I needed a few more things and was helped by Essian, he noticed that I picked up sone items that were not on sale and went back to get the correct ones while I checked out, he walked to my car and loaded all my heavy items (20 pds. plus). The whole transaction was smooth and quick. This is a bigger store than others and has plenty of your hardware needs and then some. Parking: Curbside and front of store Price: moderate, great sales! Well I rate this business C the reason is ; First they are the most expansive place to buy anything. around. More expansive then Home depot or Lowes really twice as much as Costco the houseware department they call it Carrie's an assortment number of items that priced as twice or a third more then any place including Target Giant Safeway or any other place carrying the same items including kitchen utensils home cleaning items more then target Macys or j C P Their hardware parts or machinery are very high in price the bulk is made by Ace Hardware compared to other places. Pain't Benjamin Moore one third more then Home Depot or Lowes. Anything related to painting price is very high brushes tape etc you name it. 90% is Ace Hardware made items are extremely high more then Giant or Safeway and other supermarkets in the area including Target let alone Costco many elderly don't go there I get about convenience or lack of mobility but they are wasting their money. Target Carries all National brands including many items Strosneiders sells for a lower price every day without being on sale for one buck at Strosneiders. Strosniders/Ace Bethesda is part of the same chain not the Silver Spring store on Fenton St was sold to another bigger company in the area now Ace Hardware and the prices there are lower still then at Strosneiders /Ace in Kensington I wouldn't recommend to buy there as they make a huge marginal profit at the expansive of costumers the average costumer there are older folks used to buy at moms and paps stores including old Hardware City at knowles Av Kensington MD until 5 years ago solely hardware items and garden necessities the thirty something costumer hardly ever enters the door unless asking about an item pharmacy related sold at pharmacy's CVS/Walgreens or pharmacy related store. Costco pharmacy items price is lower. I give you an example they have a few vacuum cleaners one in particular is $100.00 more then at Amazon 60/70 more then at any other place including Sawing and Vac. The older folks most living in the Kensington area were used to shop at Hardware City for hardware items are now paying a premium price for cleaning items giving that some items the average supermarket no longer Carries it it can be purchased through their website directly or Amazon for a lower price Space is limited very cramped narrow walking aisle's very for costumers when workers are doing the stoking witch takes place almost daily Monday through Thursdays. They sell everything by the piece as opposed to items available by the box or package including candles it can be bought through Colonial Candle. One draw back is when things out of stock and shelves look empty of the items the costumer needs might take days to be replenish. The store doesn't carry a big stock for lack of space used to be mainly Hardware and lawn related is now also housewares and other stuff I call it crappy stuff that no one wants or buys its to attract buyers visually. Plants costs are higher then at any other place around and they have a very limited number of plants indoors and outdoors Johnson is the place to go to for sending flower arrangements locally. Home Depot and Lowes they sell a larger variety at plants indoors and outdoors at a lower price. a nursery on 29 in Burtonsville, is the place to go for flower planting pots bulbs etc My take is please, in these times take care of your money don't over pay. There are places up the street where money can be saved by a big margin. Given that they try hard to welcome you and serve you bottom line is your wallet wether or not a costumer is willing to pay so much more then at any other places including supermarkets in the area. Costco no one beats the price then Walmart and target. it's your money to waist My money will not be adding to their coffers. one container at around $ 22 costs half the price at Costco given that sometimes it's available until it's sold " a hit and miss " however the smart shopper knows how to shop and save money. I compared prices that they sell like OXO now made in China the quality isn't as good as it was when made in US the peelers fall apart in no time poor quality and poorly made one to mention of many. Be smart look for prices even on their website the prices are lower. Please, do diligence but for the older folks living around the store area like I said it's one stop shop for a very high price By the way Trible's , Inc around the Washington area one in Beltsville, MD and another in Rockville Md been around for many decades are the place to go for parts of most small house appliances as well as many larger appliances old and new on the market they provide an excellent service experts on just about any machine big or small sold by anyone They should have stuck with hardware instead of carrying in so much junk upfront specially just to make money. I have been shopping at Strosniders Hardware in Bethesda for over 30 years. In April, I purchased an Ego mower, leaf blower and weed eater. I have had a variety of landscaping equipment and I feel that the Ego equipment is by far the best I have had! I would like to give a shout out to Craig Saur for his insights he shared with me regarding this brand. In July, I used string that was incompatible with the Ego weed eater; consequently, jamming up the string feed head. Strosnider's had the appropriate towel bar & cut it to order for a nominal fee. Strosniders continues to impress. Everytime we bring in a home repair issue, they help figure out how to fix it right. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and solution oriented. Plumbing, painting,, locks, lamp repair, A to Z, they do it all. It is like having a bunch of cool grandpas and grandma's to get you off on a good start. Until now, I haven't been here since they opened a location close to my home in Downtown Silver Spring. I chose to Coe for a customer appreciation night on the lure of free chocolate chip cookies. :) Man, was it packed! The event started at 6:30 (after hours), but must have began before they closed because the parking lot was jammed at 6:40. As for the store itself, they have everything a homeowner needs. Can't judge the customer service based on this visit because they were busy running around. Prices are higher for gadgets you can buy at BB&B with a 20% off coupon, like the drain cover that was $3.00 more here. I love local businesses and want to support them, but my wallet likes being fat. I will continue to shop at their sister store if an urgent situation arises, like my recently broken toilet flusher. Came in for toilet part and auto fuses. Couldn't find fuses. Said excuse me to first guy standing still at the end of the electrical aisle. He said "I'm busy. Find someone else." Found second guy, who sent me to a aisle that didn't have any auto fuses I ended up buying the toilet part for 25% more than Home Depot. The staff is the handy Dad you always wanted, they have lots of stuff in stock, and you can take care of pretty much any project with a stop right here. The prices are not cheap, and they are not always the most forth coming with discounts. Get your TrueValue Card to get discounts, and check out the local coupon mailer for coupons. This place can be crazy on a summer weekend, or before the big winter blizzard! Strosniders is the only reason why I will actually be sleeping tonight. Last night I found a large roach. That little brazen turd came out during a strenous session of "shimmy" the belly dancing show we were following on Fit TV. The thing had wings and was four inches long. I have not seen anything like that since the jungles of Colombia. So after calling over the dogs, which were useless, cause apparently they all knew each other from before and just had a creepy reunion, I screamed for the help of another hysterical female, we managed to fabreeze that beast to death. It's now in a dust buster vac, that's encased in a large ziploc as evidence for the exterminator who will be coming on Tuesday. So after the hysterics, and bleach contamination cleansing of the house I decided that it's war and I need chemicals. They seem to have service staff waiting at every aisle, they are all like versions of my dad, ready to be manly and fix stuff. It just feels like a small hometown kinda store. The kind sales person guided me to the section of insect death and pointed out products that you normally won't find at Home Depot. Not raid but borax based eco friendly products. I can see how its pricier, but the service and access to more diverse supplies is worth it. Time to declare war. I will be yelping the exterminator next. read more

This is a truly fantastic store. I have been going here for over 10 years. Quite a bit over the past 2 to 3 years. I am always amazed at both the number of employees in the store and how helpful they tend to be. A lot of the folks working there have been at this location for a very long time, which of course is a good sign since it means workers want to stay there. And it's great for customers since they become very knowledgeable. I was only inside for 7 or 8 minutes and I must have been asked by half a dozen employees if they could help me with anything. The customer service is very, very good. Many of the employees are also quite friendly and easy to talk to. And the store has a very large selection. Strosniders is my local hardware store, and with that comes a lot of expectations. Should I need an transduced flux capacitor at anytime, my hardware store better have it. I can tell you that I've never gone to Strosniders and been disappointed. They always have that odd ball thing I'm looking for. And recently, on a long-winded trip to find canning supplies, they were the only ones that came through. The greatest thing about this place is, as soon as you enter, you are run by the customer service desk. Hardware stores=millions of items. Me=no idea where they are. Customer service=hopefully an idea of where they are! How many times have you gone into those enormous hardware stores and wandered around for a half an hour. Though its good exercise, if I'm headed to the hardware store, it's most likely means I'm already frustrated. Something has broken... and now I have to fix it. This meaning I stop in from time to time just to pick things up for my business or for the home. Every single time Ive been in Strosniders I have worse service, less help, and more uncomfortable situations. No one ever seems to want to take the time to help me or answer questions. My experience today had me leaving and planning to never go to this store again. These employees need some serious training on how to help and treat customers. After being talked down to and treated like I was stupid I walked back to my business. I thought about what happened and I felt it was necessary to wright in about this. While thinking about everything that was said to me I found another local hardware store (Christopher's Glen Echo Hardware). I drove to this other store and asked the same question and they could not have been more helpful and friendly. To really just sum this all up if you don't plan on having any questions Strosniders is fine for you. But if you have any questions or need any help at all RUN AWAY from Strosniders. read more

I've shopped at Strosnider's a long time and am happy to support a local business over a big box or online store. So, we went there today wanting to replace our incandescent kitchen floodlights with LEDs and get one halogen bulb. We had to hunt down some help (everyone was playing with 2 standard poodles). The first guy wasn't sure what LED bulb was equivalent to what we needed. The second guy handed us something the wrong size. We pointed out that it was the wrong size and he handed us something else that was the wrong wattage. We pointed that out and he said, "it's basically the same" and walked away. Another employee came down the aisle, passed me, and asked someone else if he needed help ( he didn't), and continued on. I called after him that I did need help finding the right halogen bulb. He did come back, and he did find what I needed. We got home. The halogen bulb works. But the LED is significantly brighter than the 5 other bulbs in the room, so it's not "basically the same." I know this is first world problems. But I'm used to pleasant service at Strosnider's. That's been part of their competitive edge over other sources. We ordered the LEDs on Amazon and will returning the other bulbs. read more
