They have been around since HS, the staff is always friendly and helpful & knowledgeable, Ive come here for so many different things, intricate hardware, tools in a pinch, HOT SAUCES And grilling needs, THEY HAVE LOTS!!!! Same owners since they were in the shopping center down the street. Cut your keys or grab some paint, like to support the locals vs BIG retail stores where nobody really knows or is helpful. All around a great family owned local hardware store. I've been a customer for years both here and at their previous location back in the day. I'm not really a hardware or construction person but they have whatever I need 9 times out of 10. Awesome customer loyalty program for us regulars! They have a decent selection of just about everything and the staff has always been very helpful...even when I'm not sure what I'm looking for. They always have a good variety of seasonal products as well, including pet friendly snow melter/salt, which can be hard to find elsewhere sometimes. They also have a "ladies night" which I haven't been to but it sounds like a cool idea. Do note that they close at 5pm on Sundays. Good to know especially if you're working on a project during the summer months. The only major con is if you need to buy anything in bulk. Maybe go to a larger chain store for that. They used to have everything in ample stock but lately it's been more like I need such and such type of nail and they only have two boxes when I need five. And because I'm not a construction person I then spend half an hour hemming and hawing in the aisle looking for something comparable that they have five of. Sure this wouldn't be a problem if I were a normal person using the nails for a normal purpose as one of their alternatives would work fine. Except I'm not normal and I'm usually using the nails for some epic Martha Stewart inspired holiday decoration that requires five boxes of the same exact nails. Especially when you don't want to drive all the way to one of the large box stores, where it takes forever to find what you need and you wait in long lines. Customer service at Christopher's Hardware is incredible. I find their staff very knowledgeable, attentive, courteous, and deliberate in their customer attention. I live in the area and always choose Christopher's hardware first when I have to fix something around the house. Whether the problem is plumbing, drywall, masonry, electrical, HVAC, paint, kitchen & bathroom, or yard they always have a knowledgeable opinion on correcting the problem and 95% of the time I have what I need. Their tool department by far competes with big box stores and has every tool known to man and then some. The store has a few 2x4's and other small pieces of plywood and drywall which is enough to get you out of a bind but it's not a store you would go to if you needed a lot of wood for a home project. Recently the kitchen sink drain seal started leaking and after multiple failed attempts of trying to patch it, install a new cork seal, etc I finally went to Christopher's and asked how to fix this problem and the gentlemen recommended the use of a silicon seal which to this day has not leaked. This morning I'm waiting for the store to open because I need help repairing a broken shower head. I know that the staff will be able to walk me through extracting the broken threads in the pipe behind the wall and have the right tool to do the job. This store is my first stop for every home repair or enhancement! read more

I've used the Ashton-Sandy Spring store a few times and will never return. When I didn't want to go into a big box retail store I've spent my money here on things like Grass seeds, brooms, keys made, glue, rakes, lawn and leaf bags. During COVID-19 in September I went in wearing a new mask AND latex gloves. I was stopped as soon as I walked in. That would've been fine, especially during COVID-19, but I walked in 6ft behind a White family who were not stopped and asked what they needed. The sales person was cold and mercurial. She responded with fast single word answers to my questions about Lysol being in stock or anything like it. I am Black, female, friendly, from military family, professional and raised in a small town. I heard there was Lysol in DC by my office, but didn't want to trek there. I wrote the store an email about the experience and heard nothing back. The undertones of racism I received is why there is such unrest in America today. I will NEVER again spend my money at this establishment and have advised my friends, neighbors and colleagues to do the same. The stores sales people are also not diverse. Maybe more diversity would help with your sketchy front entrance customer service. I will never spend another red cent at this store. read more

I make in the other day needing a metal shower hose which no one seems to have in stock and just carry the cheaper plastic one. My experience was incredible, I live a little over ten miles away from them but the trip is worth it!!! Searching for hardware stores, I saw their listing and on the off chance other places failed I called in to make sure they had the part and the gentleman on the phone had good manners and assistive skills. Getting there was a quaint drive on Olney Sandy Spring Rd, nostalgic would be a great word considering how most of the DMV area is. Very caring and friendly staff, like S. W. said family owned and operated but the slightly higher price but worth it and only moments entering the store I was asked if I needed help. read more

This is the type of store you just want to go to because everyone is nice, they are really helpful, and they have just about everything. I go there for window glass, shovels, and the nut and bolt that has to match the othe 5 you have! they have it all. Excellent customer service and, unlike the big box stores, you are likely to be able to get help from the same individuals if you need to come back multiple times as you work through big, complicated projects. They will work with you for as long as it takes to get it right and to your satisfaction. Wonderful neighborhood store! Has just about anything you would need for hardware and house hold items. Friendly staff was very knowledgeable of what they carry, what aisle it is in and also suggested other solutions for what you need. (For example they suggested using an empty picnic ketchup container for applying a powder plant fertilizer) The store hours are great for for picking things before or after work too. I have frequently gone to Christophers for solutions needing intelligent help. Repeatedly they have come through for me. The other day, I took a gallon of unopened paint I purchased at Home Depot over a year ago in hopes they could shake it up, saving me considerable time doing it manually. Took my pocket knives to be sharpened. They "sharpened" them and in the process destroyed the blades! They were barely salvageable when I took them somewhere else to be fixed. Both blades had deep gouges. The gentleman I had fix them said that they were pretty much destroyed and that the store should buy me new knives! The other day I came in for three things: a dust buster filter, a cfl light bulb & a "green" substance presumably to take care of a drain without using something caustic. They had the filter, a kind gentleman helped me decide which wattage/cfl to purchase to equal the one I brought in--he even said he'd take care of the old one--when I asked if he knew where/how I could dispose of it--and thirdly I was sorta kinda prepared to pay for some kind of environmentally friendly goo to unclog my kitchen sink drain. He recommended a mini snake and said it was only $3.99. When I brought it home it did the trick just as he said! Very satisfied. read more
