For the engineer or the creative do-it-yourselfer, this should be regarded as Diagon-ally from the Harry Potter storybooks/movies. This shop has EVERY part, nut, bolt, washer, and coupler you will ever likely need. Their selection of steel and aluminum strips is more widely varied than you will find in any major hardware store. I cannot reasonably outline all the types of chain and rope they offer. Every time I go in looking for one thing, and usually finding it, albeit with help in many cases, I find still more stuff that I wish I had found years earlier, or worse still, had to fabricate because I could not find the doo-hicky anywhere, even on The Internet. In addition to having all these resources for repairs and fabrications, they also sell a surprising amount of automotive supplies, from motor oil and transmission fluid, to headlight bulbs and even car batteries! On any given day there are at most three people working there and sometimes only one, but most of the time they will even offer to install your headlight bulb, which makes them stand out head and shoulders over most any hardware store you will ever find. For a place no larger than a typical CVS pharmacy, it appears to outperform most any corporate owned hardware store I've ever seen. And don't assume it stops there either. The offer paint, light bulbs (incandescent, fluorescent, and LED), gutter supplies, about every plumbing fitting imaginable, downspouts, propane regulators and fittings, propane refills, rakes, shovels... the list goes on. It just seems impossible that a store so apparently small from the outside could offer such incredible variety on the inside. It's THE TARDIS, I tell you! It doesn't even stop there. I need to mention the "help desk" aspect. There is barely a subject from plumbing to seat-of-your-pants fabrications that you cannot receive some degree of guidance regarding. In addition they have a popcorn machine and they encourage their customers to take a bag of free popcorn with every visit, whether you buy something or not. I thought the Radio Shack battery club card was a smart draw. This stuff tastes considerably better than batteries. Lastly, there's the eye candy. For the classic car enthusiast there's usually a classic car being restored IN THE STORE. I'm not sure how they do that, since I never see any of the work being done, but it is stored there, near the main entrance and shows a little improvement or change every time I come in. The cars he restores appear to primarily wind up being raffled off for some sort of benefit. I've never looked into winning one, but I certainly enjoy seeing these cars blossoming over time. I rather regret not having posted this review three years ago when I first found the place, but to be fair I'd only scratched the surface. Now that they have helped me so many times with so many projects, I am a great deal more prepared to give it the type of review they deserve. read more

I stopped by Poolesville Hardware for the first time about two weeks ago when I was in need of some spray paint for a craft project that I am working on. The store was clean and neatly organized. The staff was friendly and helpful. I also found the prices to be competitive with the larger hardware and craft stores, although I was expecting them to be higher knowing that I was shopping at a locally owned store. The owner even thanked me for shopping in his store when I was on my way out the door! That was impressive and I will definitely be back! It would be nice if someone would get their hours posted on here, but from experience I can tell you that they are open on Sundays and they are open at least until 7 pm on weekdays. read more

This place is a gem! We recently moved to the area and every time we've gone in there, not only do they have the answers, but they have reasonable prices, carry your things to the car, and are honest & good people. I bought 25 stakes and I grabbed a bundle without counting. The sweet gentleman carrying them to the car immediately noticed it looked light and cut open another bundle and loaded up the remainder. Talk about being awesome!! We just moved, and John treated me like an old client when I first walked in. If you buy a few things - nuts and bolts, he will just charge a nominal amount (give me 50 cents and we're good!) -- if you are not sure which component you need, he will loan it and say go try out, then pay me later when you know for sure. I was looking for a hacksaw to cut some cabinet shelves, so he just loaned me his!! He operates on total trust, and the customers seem to return the favor and simply love him!! I'm planning to have my son intern at his shop over summer. He'll learn good customer service and how to be efficient and courteous. I have reviews of other businesses on yelp that are not as courteous... I wish they can see how simply being nice helps someone's business many fold. I strongly believe in the concept of "good will" -- I hope this little business continues to flourish. read more

This is such a sweet little hometown hardware store. Very nostalgic of the way things used to be (and should still be!). Customer service is always awesome, both on the phone and in person. They make you feel me feel like an old friend every time I pop in for something. Prices are still fair, but I'd rather pay a bit more and support a local, deserving business than an unfriendly chain store. I give Poolesville Hardware 5 stars. Just as the other reviews said, this is a great little store. Reminds me of the way hardware stores used to be when I was growing up, before the giants like Lowe's and Home Depot came along. Have a torn window screen? Drop it off here and they'll get it fixed right up for you. In the market for a chain saw or other power tool? The staff will be happy to discuss the pros and cons of all of them and help you figure out exactly what you need. They're really good about stocking the "best of breed" items to deal with local issues affecting Poolesville residents too. This season, a LOT of us were fighting invasions of ants. Poolesville Hardware got in a good supply of various types of Terro (the all around best ant killer on the market today), while the big box guys were still trying to sell inferior alternatives. You could probably find many of the items in here for $1 or $2 less if you shopped around, but what would the point be? You'd spend more in gas going elsewhere to get them, and probably would get far less customer service too. read more

I've only been a few times, as I don't actually live in Poolesville (but have friends that do, and invariably get called to help with projects). Every time I go, they are very very helpful and friendly. Its so rare anymore to find a well-stocked store that has helpful personnel--makes this store a rare gem! I truly wish there were other types of stores like this--small, family-owned (which I always try to choose over the giant mega-stores), and personal.
