We bought a $5,000 chair that was on sale for $4,000. Had to be shipped from Italy and we waited for several months for delivery. The problem is the chair is too uncomfortable to sit in. Our mistake as we didn't have an opportunity to sit in it as it's wasn't in the store. The salesman showed us Cantoni's catalogue and assured us that we'd be comfortable. He measured other chairs and said we'd be fine. I called the store after delivery but was told they couldn't help. I did ask for a suggestion as to where we might sell it. Our fault for ordering out of a catalogue, but so disappointed. read more

I was promised a price match. After multiple rounds of back-and-forth and once I had already progressed with the process, I was told that because the finish I wanted was "no longer available," I would have to accept a higher price. (The sales rep I had dealt with also then said, if I preferred, he could otherwise increase the price he had just quoted me for White Glove delivery.) This was despite the fact that I had found the finish offered online at another retailer at significantly lower price. I was initially told by the sales rep that this lower price was "no longer on the website," even though I had just seen it listed, placed the exact configuration in the basket, and provided a screenshot as evidence. At that point, the explanation shifted. I was then told by the sales rep, who was speaking (without basis) on behalf of the other retailer, that even if I had placed an order, the price "would not have been valid." Taken together, this sequence of explanations strongly suggests a bait-and-switch tactic: inducing me to proceed on the basis of a promised price match, only to withdraw it later through shifting and unsubstantiated claims. read more

I can only attest to my experience and it was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. I bought an Italian floor sample sofa and I am exceedingly happy with my purchase so far. The design consultant Farah was as attentive and as a pleasant to work with as it gets, and she was enthusiastic without being pushy or salesy. Communication-wise she couldn't have been more responsive and on point even after hours. Extremely disappointing to have purchased very expensive furniture imported from Italy with a guarantee from the designer that the store and the manufacturer would be responsive to any issues that may arise. In the end, the product arrived damaged, resulting in a lot of stress and aggravation. Worst of all, the designer hung up the phone on us. No excuse! read more

I used Theodores and their design service to help me furnish my home. I liked the designer I worked with well enough, and she was very responsive to me. The owner was an unpleasant woman who would start screaming sessions while customers were in the store (me!). The worst part though, was one of the sofas that I bought ended up being very cheaply made. On day one, little strings started coming up through the fabric, but the designer assured me it was normal and they just needed to be trimmed. To her credit, she offered to do it herself, but the entire situation was strange. Everything about the fabric looks horrible to this day and the sofa is uncomfortable and started sagging almost immediately. When I finally told the designer how unhappy I was with it, the answer was "well, it wasn't a very expensive couch". Let me be clear here and tell you that I spent over $60K in that store with all the furniture I bought. And I was very clear with Theodore's that I wasn't on a budget with the furniture. So in no way did I expect to have a "cheap" couch. I'm still pissed about it and will be throwing the couch in the trash heap as soon as my new couch (from room and board) arrives. read more

I fully enjoyed my experience in working with Theodore's, they have great selection, fantastic designs and excellent service from initial visit through delivery. I am a professional designer and painfully picky -- they had the perfect set of Italian-post-modern style dining chairs that the absolute best design and most comfortable I found in the entire DC area (and I searched every upscale store we have here). I can sit in them for hours! The pricing was comparable, if not competitive, to other high-quality furniture resources both in-town and online. So an update to my earlier post . . .and possibly a testament to the power of social media. After speaking with the owner, who also read my earlier review, she has worked diligently and effectively to "fix" the situation. She has communicated, she has taken responsibility, and most importantly she has followed through. I had some concerns about changing my rating but I think it important to remember people make mistakes and how they respond and take responsibility is more important than the original error. The owner cares enough to personally handle it, and more importantly she cares about her reputation. Of the pieces we have received they are stunning and absolutely meet our expectations. We still haven't received all the furniture itself but I'm confident that we will and it will be to the quality that we like. I will update my posting at that time. For the time being I have "upgraded them from 1 star to 3. Below is the original post. My experience with the design team from Theodores has been less than stellar. The young lady who "helped" us was consistently late, was consistently loose with the truth, and managed to consistently miss deadlines. When you pay a premium, the expectation is premium quality and premium service. The furniture is quality, the service is awful. The details: - They missed their own deadline by over 10 weeks (the initial estimate was 4-6 weeks) - They are constantly late to meetings (by over 2 hours in one instance) - When they are late, she lied about the reason Overall awful and not responsible. I had an absolutely brilliant experience with Theodore's that's worth sharing. We purchased Jesse furnishings more than 10 years ago that were in desperate need of reupholstering. I worked with Sandi Carpenter to choose material for my sectional and chairs, which was no easy task. When the shipment came in from Italy, Sandi accompanied her install team to swap out the material, which turned out even better than we imagined. It literally transformed our entire family room. Jim Cassidy and Paco, on the install side, were incredible. Jim went above and beyond to fix the underlying hardware that connect the sectional pieces, and Paco and his guys not only replaced the fabric covering but refashioned the cushions to make them look like new. This team of professionals REALLY cares about their work, and this is coming from a difficult customer who's hard to impress. I highly recommend using them. read more

We recently worked with Theodores for the 2nd time in 18 years to furnish another new home. We went back to Theodores because we enjoy the modern style of the furniture, the design team's knowledge and their service. During our consultation, they listened, asked questions and at subsequent meetings presented us with options that were much to our delight. Since we had made several purchases from them in the past and we knew what to expect in terms of price and quality of the furniture, we were comfortable and stuck to our budget. We ended up buying furniture for our living, dining and sitting rooms and study. To say that we are extremely pleased with our experience would be an understatement. That is why we went back! Theodore's has a nice selection of furniture. The high prices are not always commensurate with quality, but it's on the consumer to know the competition. They're not reliable regarding time estimates for delivery, and it's always the manufacturer's fault. We'd invested $20-30k at Theodore's and believed our business would mean something to a single location shop. It meant nothing. Bottom line: Once an order is paid for, the customer is at the mercy of the owner's daughter and store manager, Janice, should a problem arise. And problems are not rare. Their customer service is non-existent. We've had only positive experiences with other furniture companies in the city. They value the customer from start to finish. We wish we'd given up on Theodore's earlier. There's so many comparable options, we're surprised Theodore's is in business. We would never recommend them to a friend. read more

We wanted fabric from one manufacturer to use on a design at another manufacturer. We have ordered from Italy with our sofa being manufactured in the midst of the pandemic. My recommendation for Theodore's is to look at their furniture, check out the fabric samples, and figure out what you want. But feel free to order online, which is generally cheaper. Last year I bought a Thayer Coggin Armchair at Theodore's on sale for $3,219 inclusive. Everything was fine, except they were a little late on deliver (they estimated 8-10 weeks but they notified me it was ready for delivered in 11.5 weeks). I came back to them and ordered another on January 15th, same price. This time, at the 15.5 week point I emailed them to see what was up, largely because my mother was visiting in nine days. They said the factory was having trouble sourcing frames for the chair. I said to go ahead and cancel, as I wanted to buy something for the visit. They called back, and said forget it the factory has frames, and we can drop a chair off so you have something. But I have plenty of chairs, you just want the right chair when your mother is in town. :) On June 30, they let me know the chair arrived, and knocked $389 off the price. Unfortunately, I was out most of July and August on vacation, and flew back September 11th from my final stop. (I know, I know, I shouldn't get to complain about anything!) There were kind of snotty voicemails, "I thought you were eager to get the chair" when I was back from Italy. Whole thing left a bad taste. I am not the big customer obviously; I just buy small things. But I like to buy local and will pay the mark up because I want to keep local places where you can see the product. I always think stores are more likely to handle things well too, while online might leave you hanging. But the service doesn't seem to be there for the $350 markup from the online price at yliving ($2,872 inclusive). To get down to the online price, you have to have something go wrong, and then might as well risk online! I am in and out of DC, I have a job where I spend 50/50 time in SF and DC. I also work a lot when I work, and vacation hard. So I am tough to get in touch with. Could be my fault, and could have been a worse, but my experience with them is not great. Just called now to get it paid and delivered, and they didn't have the revised invoice in the system. So what should take 5 minutes takes, takes 30 and a bit of hand holding. But seems to be over, fingers crossed! :) read more

If you like modern furniture...and I mean REALLY modern furniture and you have a really good job - then you should cruise over to Wisconsin for a visit. The store is large and carries a huge array of furniture, lighting and accessories. For a very long time I was completely in love with a not-so-contemporary butter yellow leather sofa (soft as butter too) stuffed with down that was for sale. Unfortunately my wallet won out and the sofa stayed at Theodore's. The prices are high here (hence the 3 stars) and often the pieces aren't worth the prices. Additionally, much of the merchandise they feature is difficult to picture in anyone's house unless your last name is Jetson. read more

For contemporary furniture Theodore's is the place to go in this area. BUT IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM do not expect them to stand behind their product. I purchased a relatively expensive table 5 months ago that was scratched with normal use. When I called them about it they said that 'Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it'. I would not have a problem with this if they sent someone out to put forth some effort but based on a picture it was decided. My business is built on service, I know how to give it and I know what it should look like when I receive it and THEODORE'S HAS NOT given me good service. read more

So far we're happy with our experience. Yes, the prices are high, but if you're buying high-end furniture, you are paying for what you get. We ended up liking the upholstery on the floor model so our order was easy, couch, pick a size, get the same upholstery as the floor model -- DONE. Well, except that we have to wait 16 weeks, YES SIXTEEN WEEKS, to get our couch. That seems like an absurdly long time, but we really liked the couch so we're trying to be patient with the waiting. read more

Whenever I want to acquire a new furniture, I always head to Theodore"s. The store has a wonderful array of unique furniture, artwork, and accessories. The quality is excellent and the staff is great. They always have interesting ideas, and even offered to come to my home when I was uncertain as to whether a sofa would fit the decor. I always get compliments on the pieces in my home. Unfortunately, some of the items have to be built in Italy, but they are worth the wait. they also have clearance items where you can get quality items at an affordable price. read more

Wow - astounded to see so many negative reviews, and a bit perplexed as to why all the positive reviews have been removed by the Yelp filter. I purchased my first piece from Theodores - a love seat - in 1992, and it is still in terrific shape. When moving to a new house in 1999 I purchased a great living room couch, very comfortable accent chairs, and a glass and chrome desk that still looks cutting edge. The prices were on the higher end, but if you want unique pieces with superior quality you should expect to pay a bit more. Over the years I've picked up additional accent tables and shelving on clearance - great deals. I'm a value shopper - I have as much furniture, lighting, and accent pieces from the Crate & Barrel Outlet Store, eBay, gilt.com, Home Depot and Target as I do from Christophers. The mix is great. I've spent 2 months looking all over the web for a new chaise lounge and sectional - done the price comparisons, assessed the fabric options, etc - and I'll be purchasing again from Theodores. read more

Janice?) began blatantly yelling at this particular employee whom I was having a lovely conversation with. I was so embarassed for her and flustered myself that I left without buying anything. Yes everything here is way way way overpriced but I could afford the product that I wanted. The sales person quoted me a discount then when I returned to purchase the item she changed the discount to a lower discount. A friend was with me that day and confirmed the same discount amount that I knew she quoted. PLEASE be careful because clearly the sales folks will try to cheat you. The sales person told me that it didnt matter if she quoted me the wrong discount or not but my concern was that the quoted discount is why I came back to buy the item and there has to be some sort of accountability with what the customer is told! A 5% discount could mean hundreds of dollars at this place! read more

Perhaps I am being premature in my review, but I think not. My experience with Theodores has been disappointing to say the least. I recently purchased a condo on Connecticut Ave, in Washington DC in Dec, 2013. I ordered two swivel chairs from Theodores,shortly thereafter as the size fit the bill. A 1/2 deposit was required at time of purchase. There is no financing available, and I was told it would take 5 weeks for delivery ,As time went by, I didn't want to be unreasonable, but it was now March 2014 and I had not heard a word from Theodores,(he proud recepient of my 1/2/ deposit.) I stopped by the store as it is next door to my hairdresser and inquired about my delivery date. I was told there was a production hold up. I asked where the chairs were being produced and the sales person replied "Italy". In disbelief, I said, oh goodness! At my next opportunity, which was probably 2 or so weeks later, I placed a call to inquire again and was told this time that the furniture had been shipped and I should expect a call soon regarding delivery. I asked, "where is the furniture coming from?" and the reply was North Carolina. Still trying to be patient because unfortunately I have learned that impatience does nothing but raise ones blood pressure, I said ok. Two weeks later, with no call or no delivery I called again, This time I was told that the chairs were there and had been for some time but the person I last spoke to missed them. S0 , all I needed to do now was to pay the balance and some outsourced shipping company would call me to arrange delivery. Like a victim having no choice,, I said ok, and provided my debit card information, but asked, "don't you think I should be able to see this purchase before making final payment"? and is there a delivery charge? The response was," well the delivery charge is already included in the purchase price , and you can always refuse to accept the order if you are not satisfied, but you must pay us first". The delivery people did call today, Wed, April 16, but delivery cannot happen until the 22nd. I dutifully said ok, knowing full well there was no point in saying anything else. The phone conversation was ended with the delivery company telling me that they would let me know on the 22nd when they would be arriving. When I placed one star in my review, a comment came up saying eek! Methinks not. I only hope this does not mean my comments will not be displayed. If this is the type of service you feel is acceptable, well I say, go for it! but it surely will not be for me, The overall impression I am left with is " gotcha"! read more

I emailed Theodores last week regarding the American Leather sleeper sofas they sell. I immediately received a response from Janet Kanter and we made a plan for me to stop by over the weekend to see the models and discuss more. Once I arrived, I was immediately waited on and Janet was so helpful, friendly, and easy to talk to. It's a bit hard to explain but the level of attentiveness Janet and her colleagues demonstrated made me really feel that she cared about me finding the right sofa. I have visited several furniture stores in my current hunt and this was by far the most attentiveness I've received! And it's clear she knows her stuff and gets excited helping you think through what you need. In the end, I chose a different sofa at a different store but it wasn't because of the customer service that's for sure. I was just so appreciative of the time and care she took that I wanted others to know about Theodores and their high level of customer service. When I need furniture in the future, I will start there first for sure! read more
