Gift shops around here have cheap looking stuff but it's expensive. It's not like that here. There's lots of handcrafted items. Get something for pretty much everyone. There's jewelry and keychains among the smaller items. It has some bigger items including clothing and other accessories. These items are especially good for women. Lots of things for them here to try on. They can find a variety of stylish purses. As for the men there's funny T-shirts and novelty items. There's also the old school stuff like postcards. I stumbled upon this cute gem while leaving a restaurant last week. I don't want to describe it as a gift shop, because it's more than just that! They have a good selection of books, clothes, jewelry, greeting cards, handbags etc. My most favorite thing about this place are their selection of books! I was in the store for about 30 minutes looking at the photography books, cookbooks, astrology books etc!! I definitely enjoyed myself and I will be back to purchase more items! read more

Urban Dwell: combination of Paper Source, Homegoods, and Urban Outfitters. Most everything was pricy, but I expected it, especially since it's a gift shop in DC, Adams Morgan area to be exact. Workers are friendly. The store is really cool, but what's even cooler? The products they sell! See all my pictures. They have the most random, funny, kinda brash, I'm sure to some, offensive sayings on their products. I find it funny. But I know it's a place my mom wouldn't be too fond of. Anyway, they sell funny cards - some sarcastic, some actually sweet and sincere, the usual, see above. They sell random stuff like a handkerchief that says, "No Ugly Crying," for $25 though. That almost made ME cry! Funny pot holders, coin purses, pencil pouches, leather goods, gifts for men, women, a kids section, random products for the office and/or home. I loved these coasters - one was the left end of the U.S. and it says "West Coasters" and the shape of the right side of the U.S., which says "East Coasters." Funny, right? Urban Dwell is one of my favorite local places!! I love stopping in to browse through all the fun items they have - anything from DC/political gear to a wonderful selection of children's books and toys. It's my go-to place for gifts and funny cards, and Amanda always has great suggestions whenever I come in and say I'm looking for a gift for a specific person or event! Some of my favorite things are their great collection of candles and fun socks, and their cute ornaments around Christmastime. During the pandemic, they went above and beyond to make it easy to shop remotely, through Instagram, phone calls, and their website. They frequently refreshed their great stock of puzzles, which helped pass the time (especially before the weather turned nice), put together gift boxes that could be shipped directly to a recipient, and set up curbside pickup so that you could purchase/pay for items ahead of time, and pick them up already bagged and disinfected. Now that the store is back open, they have hand sanitizer available right when you come in and at checkout, enforce mask wearing, and disinfect your credit card after completing your transaction. I feel very safe visiting in person, and it's always so lovely to catch up with everyone. Thanks for being such a neighborhood gem, guys!! read more

Having been invited to several homes on Saturday and devoid of any but free Colonial Williamsburg notecards, I set out for a stationer within walking distance. First stop was closed and Urban Dwell seemed possible to get to before closing with a little help from Circulator. Very good selection, rousing music and friendly service. I am confused as to why Urban Dwell doesn't have 500 Yelp reviews exuberantly extolling its diverse and creative selection of gifts and home goods. While one may dismiss the store at first glance as one of those overpriced stores selling cutesy knick-knacks, a.k.a. pieces of sh**, it's clear upon closer look that the owner has painstakingly and thoughtfully curated a quirky array of items that are in fact useful. What I have purchased or gifted from Urban Dwell: -A gorgeous cheese board hand-crafted in Seattle from slate, on which you can label your cheeses with the included chalk -A transparent shower curtain featuring close-up photographs of goldfish -A red current candle by Votivo, which has an incredible tangy/fruity scent. I would buy more if only they weren't $15 each. -A illustrated book entitled "100 Reasons to Panic About Being Single" (very hilarious; good to give to a single friend who has a good sense of humor, as I attempted to do) Seriously, Urban Dwell covers all areas of merchandise, from jewelry, DC-themed key chains, and greeting cards to children's wall clocks shaped like animals, storm glasses, and pug tea infusers. It's the perfect place to stop by if you're wracking your brain trying to shop for a picky friend whose birthday is coming up. Certainly, the prices are significantly higher than what you may find at other stores, as it's a local joint. For example, I paid $20 for the aforementioned goldfish shower curtain and later discovered, to my devastation, that it was going for $10 on Target's website. However, it feels noble to support a DC business-- I like to think it was for a good cause. read more

Urban Dwell has to be my favorite small business in DC. Their products are curated to reflect the District perfectly. During Covid-19 they continued to serve the community and keep our sanity. I needed puzzles especially during the rainy stretch we had. To look out for my health and theirs, they communicated quickly with me via email and sent me several pictures of puzzles. They kept me updated on when their next shipment was too. I walked to the shop and the item was delivered curbside after being completely sanitized. We did the payment free of contact. Awesome knickknacks, horrible customer service. Came in randomly after seeing this store on the street and they've got a lot of cute home decor. Ended up buying a few items. Will not come back though since the cashiers were extremely unfriendly, borderline hostile. Kept staring blankly at us as we walked through the store and when my friend asked if the one to the right could check her out while I was being checked out at the other register, she said in a monotone voice, "Only that one works." A paradise for everything urban! Perfect spot for that last minute - we are invited to a house warming-baby shower-dude's birthday-engagement party and I have no idea what to bring type of thing. They have a great variety of perfectly useless decor with a twist of sarcasm, as well as some more practical things - all seem to come from local/small designers - and a lot of them are DC themed if you are in the market for that. Nothing I would call a necessity, but certain to make someone's home a bit cozier. The selection also seems very well curated and a lot of things go well together. To top if off there is a corner with perfect birthday cards, from romantic and cute to absolutely hilarious ones. I've been lost here for hours before since everything is unique and screams 'touch me and give me a try'. Also this shop is a must on my list for all holiday shopping. read more

Lots of cute DC themed items, as well as hostess gifts, stationary/cards, puzzles etc. There is a children's section in the back with high quality, unique stuffed animals and toys, fun selection of children's books. I got several for my nieces and nephews and a super soft cuddly butterfly plushie for my friend's 2year old. I appreciate that everything was arranged based on age. Urban Dwell is one of those really cool shops that has anything a modern creative person would want from clever artisan greeting cards to Hillary Clinton dolls. It's very spacious so you're bound to fund something you like. It's also just off the main strip of Adams Morgan making it easy to stop in on your way to dinner. If you're from DC, the prices won't shock you, but tourists would find it a bit pricey. read more

Finally visited this shop yesterday after having wanted to for months. This unique store is absolutely huge instead & contains a treasure trove of hundreds of wonderful items. I just wanted to buy so much but had to reign myself in. This is a fabulous place to go to find gifts for people - there really is something for everyone. I'm one of those people who loves browsing gift shops and Urban Dwell seems to always carry cool, interesting items I've not seen at other places. -Gifts for babies and kids, weddings, and dads/moms/grads/whatever holiday is happening around that time. Also has a unique collection of books, home goods, jewelry/purses, cards, prints, and terrariums that are hard to kill even with a brown thumb. -They seem to get new merchandise often, so if you don't find something, you might another time. -Price point is affordable for DC, much more so than other shops like Salt and Sundry. Cute shop that's great for gifts. I was recently looking for thank-you notes in a pinch that would match with the theme of my wedding invitations. While Urban Dwell didn't have any like that (actually, their thank-you note selection was surprisingly dull), I bought two packs of simple note cards that could work for the early gift-givers. The next day, I found some notes at another store that looked nearly identical to my wedding invitation theme, so I decided to return the other notes to Urban Dwell. I was told that they don't usually do returns after 10 days, but that since I was getting married and explained the situation, she honored the return. It was a super classy move that made my day! I didn't catch her name but the sales woman was also very friendly and seemed to enjoy her job. She's an excellent representative for the company! LOVE this place! I could spend hours in here. If you love Paper Source/ are looking to get someone a a thoughtful gift - this is your one stop shop. Has the cute things that Paper Source has like cards and kick knacks but with a thoughtful Washingtonian flare. From GOP/Dem mugs to jewelry to key chains to kitchenware to kids' clothing, this place has. it. all. I stumbled in here by chance yesterday and I definitely have to go back today or tomorrow to get a card for a friend's birthday and possibly a cat mug.
