For a long time I supported this place and strongly advocated against shopping at Ace hardware. Keep things local at a hardware store that is part of the community. Unfortunately, one smug employee ruined that experience for me, and I'll now be switching my allegiance to Ace. I purchased a small $6 shower accessory. Unfortunately I lost the receipt. The accessory was not what I needed, and I attempted to return it. The employee stated I cannot return without a receipt, even for a store credit (I was going to purchase products worth more than the value of what I was returning). I was disappointed at this response, but I shopped for what I needed anyway. I went to the front, and the employee was helping another customer in an aisle. After helping that customer, she proceeded to another customer in the aisle. Now, I understand one person having to triage, but at that point a simple acknowledgement of me would have been nice. It felt intentional, and it seemed as if the employee was taking satisfaction, acting somewhat smug as she told me she won't accept a return without a receipt. Not sure if this is just one rude employee, or the owner is really this strict about returns on $6 items that are clearly unused, but either way, I seriously doubt I'll be doing business here any more. If you had or have a similar experience, I also encourage you to drop these clowns. (Incidentally, when I purchased the item I would eventually return, I was not asked for my phone number (which they generally use to text receipts, as I'm part of their "customer club" or whatever. So there is actually another mess-up by a different employee that could have accommodated the companies own draconian return policy.) In short, I go to a neighborhood spot like this for the service. And when I'm treated this way, it defeats the purpose of avoiding much more convenient and likely cheaper options like Ace or Amazon. You are not really selling hardware - you should be trying to offer a superior customer experience--remember that and you will not lose customers like this read more

I'll give the cafe 4 for friendliness and a cozy environment, 2 for order correctness (did it twice wrong), and a 3 for the food which is just OK. The door was open and except for a couple of customers and myself there were no masks. read more

I recently went to purchase a replacement 16" chainsaw blade, unfortunately, the chain I received was 18" inches. I went to return it, with chainsaw, and they "refused" to give my money back only because the plastic box was opened. How else are you going to put a new chain on? I will never go back there again. Love this store. I can't understand how such a small store can almost always have what I need, in and out in under 5 minutes. Saves so much time verse going to the big box stores. Prices are comparable to the big stores, and often carry old parts not otherwise obtainable (probably been on shelf since the 60s). 2 generations of my family have been shopping at this store. It's truly a walk-back in time! Everything from fly traps to frying pans to stove knobs from the 1970s (one of my friends needed one for an old stove and they had it!!) :) I was greeted when we first walked in, and when walking past the counter was asked if we needed help finding anything. My husband and I did, and the guy could not have been happier to help! With the Home Depot's and Lowe's of the world, it's really nice to still have a store like this today with customer service and items of all kind within your hometown! read more

Today was my first time back at Nichols since they finished their remodel. I definitely appreciated the updates and increased stock, and I'm so glad it still feels like my small-town neighborhood hardware store. I was able to find a couple of products that I haven't been able to find anywhere else at the big box stores. I also got great service from a gentleman who knew exactly what I was looking for and where to find it within seconds. Inventory of things you never knew you needed is amazing. If you can't find whatever you're looking for, rest assured its here. Family owned for multiple generations and local, so I shop there. The inventory is unbelievable! Everything from skillets to paint to keys. Nuts, bolts, nails and everything else hardware that I have no idea what they're for or even what they're called. I do know that when no one else in this area even knew what chafing dish fuel was, these guys figured out that even though they didn't have it I could use denatured alcohol for even better results!!!! They also sell some of the best brands of paint. Save yourself the trip to the orange box and get your paint here. Seriously, there have been numerous newspaper and magazine articles about the sheer amount of different things in this shop. It's worth a trip there just to see it. Assistants are hit or miss (sometimes downright rude in that "what do you want little blonde lady" kind of way) and they close early - hence only 3 stars. read more

I adore this place. Think of the quintessential storybook hardware store. Original wooden cubbies holding nails, old signage, amazing customer service. It has everything- from household supplies to paint to signs to toasters. The people that work there are helpful and personable. Mark, the gentleman that checked me out, was hilarious and took such pride in his store. And to make it even better, their prices are super reasonable; much less than a Home Depot or the like. read more

I had not been in the store since before Covid. I went back with anticipation. One of my purchases was a baby pool that was leaning against the wall next to the new computer/cash register. I commented that they now had computers. The woman waiting on me snapped "It was either that or go out of business." Hmmm. When she totaled my approximately $200 purchase, I handed her my credit card. She snapped "I don't like things shoved in my face." If it had not been for my granddaughter who was standing there and eagerly anticipating playing in her pool, I would have walked out. At least no one at Home Depot is outright hostile. read more

Doesn't get better than this place. Not only are many tools - such as spade bits more inexpensive here, the service is impeccable. The staff knows their stuff, they know where every item is stashed... this place also does some very unique things like cutting glass. In no other place will you find things done the old fashion way: The staff is eager to help, and spends the personal time to help you figure out what will work best for your project whether you are a contractor or home owner. There is always a smile on everyone's face. The products are often of a quality that simply isn't carried anymore. From their utility knives that are heavy solid metal and monogrammed with their company name(and only $4 with blades!), to their high quality paint brushes, to the roof jacks I purchased that survived heavy equipment falling on them multiple times and a tractor driving over them, nothing beats Nichols! This place is a throw back to the 1900's. I went in there looking for a screwdriver and came out with a bag of real nice garden and tools for my hose. The people that work there are all in theirs 60's and 70's and don't use a digital registers. Their don't scan anything, they type everything up by hand on carbon paper. The service was good but cashing out takes such a long time. read more

Went in for some metric bolts on 8/2/2016. Told the salesman the exact specs (diameter, thread pitch, length), and that it was a nonstandard thread pitch. We walked to the back, he looked through some bins and handed me the bolts telling they were what I needed. I took his word for it and didn't double check him. Got home and found out the bolts were the wrong pitch. I don't go through Purcellville on a regular basis, so the bolts sat on my desk till 9/13/2016 when I attempted to return them. I was told, rather rudely, that they couldn't be returned because it had been over 30 days. Even though this is NOT printed on the receipt and I explained I had been given the wrong bolts, the return was still refused!!! Sorry, but customer service is better at the Blue and Orange box stores, and I will take my business to Brunswick Hardware from now on where they have been more than accommodating with slow returns... read more

I was in the store to pick up an item and when I was there i heard the counter help talking about a customer that ordered something that they no longer sell. SO they continued to talk about it and said that they need to charge the customer 7.50 for PROCESSING!... The one employee stated he HAD to GET something out of making the phone calls for the customer. WHAT happened to customer service ... just wanting to help out a customer. It is sad that making a couple phones calls for a customer made Nicols want to charge that customer to make them. Customer service is lacking in this store. Walking in I see 3 employees behind the counter, not one greets us. We wander around looking for cabinet hardware and do not get approached. We leave and still no word from the 3 employees behind the counter. I hate that Amazon and Walmart are taking over but if Mom and pop stores need to realize that to survive customer service is key. I live 30 miles away, but find myself drawn to this 100 year old landmark more often than my wife likes. If they don't have it, you don't need it, but don't worry, they have everything. When you walk into Nichols, you not only step back in time, you don't want to leave. There are no e-products here. Just a bunch of older gentlemen with an unmatched knowledge of hardware and pencils behind their ears (they need them because they handwrite your bills of sale). Avoid like the plague. Service is bad to non-existent. I just had the counter guy walk away from me in the checkout line without a word. I had one product and cash in hand. Selection is substandard. Prices are way above average, even for a 'quaint' local hardware store. I've been there multiple times and had a bad experience...every....time. Every time.
