This has always been my favorite store in McLean for 10 years. Until today. Went in to fix something for my wife and was told they are too busy to help me. Couldn't believe it. Thats Never happened in that store before. But this one particular gentleman (who's worked there a long time) actually said they were too busy to help me. A truly GREAT hardware store - because of the people who work there. Brought my favorite STIHL chainsaw for a checkup. Although not a repair center, they took it apart anyway, showed me where it was worn, and treated me like an adult. Mr. George is likely the most knowledgeable Stihl expert in Virginia/Maryland - every model, their strengths and weaknesses. Usually works Wednesdays and Sundays. Some of the nicest folks you'll find. Can they be more expensive than Home Depot or Lowe's? Sure but this is a small shop. The quality of service makes up for these nickels here and there. One would think McLean and "stuffed suits," but these ladies and gentlemen are friendly, fun, and humorous. They recently helped me to complete a challenging project! This is what a community hardware store should be. They have quite a lot of gardening and other equipment. It's actually astounding. Also I bought my snow shovel here. Sadly this past winter was a disappointment, but that's ready to go. By all means give these folks the first opportunity! They really are exceptional! read more

Easy to find a parking and actually bigger that it looks from outside. Being told to go to Lowe's and Home Depot for a lot of things, this gem of a hardware has been going on unnoticed in my book. Not as big as the aforementioned, but enormous in knowledge, service and attention. For a person who is not sure how to solve a problem i e, what to choose when the squirrel is robbing all the food from the birds, what to use when your sink is clogged or a shortlist and explanations on different grills. I usually don't write reviews, but I've been coming to Mclean hardware for several years now and every time it's just a wonderful experience. They almost always have young gentlemen standing at the front, more than willing to help find whatever it is you may need. The last couple times I've come in there's a cashier that always greets you with a smile and ask if you need any help, I believe her name is Cameron. I was just in the other day and I asked about sharpening services and she answered all of my questions and even told me an estimate price. I then needed to look for another item and when the nice young boys upfront didn't know what exactly I was looking for, Cameron was able to tell them where to direct me. Friendly neighborhood hardware that has friendly and knowledgeable staff and a fairly large variety of hardware and other random stuff such as grills, etc. Of course they don't as large of a selection of items as the big guys like for example they didn't sell parts for my Ryobi weed eater. Prices seem okay and you're paying for the convenience if you live in the area. I stopped here since I was already going to another place in the area. I wouldn't drive across the county to go here but I'd shop here if I lived nearby or was in the area again. read more

A good place to pick up hardware supplies without having to schlep to a Home Depot or Loews since there are none in McLean. Prices are reasonable, and they usually have plenty of people on staff to help. They also sell and service Stihl equipment, and sell Weber grills on display in their back room. read more

Unbelievable customer service -- they take service to a whole new level and I won't go elsewhere. I came in and the manager spent a good half hour with me trying to find a replacement part for my power washer. When he couldn't find one, he took damaged part, went into the back, and refashioned it for me. Wouldn't let me pay him for his time either. When I needed to get some felt stoppers for the banging drawers and cupboards, my daughter who has been living in McLean for years, suggested McLean Hardware. With a simple route to take, I live on Beverly 2 blocks from Old Dominion, I instantly found the place. Reminded me of the wonderful independent hardware stores of my younger life. Because the staff are friendly, patient and helpful, I have returned 3 times since then. Always the same service and pleasant cashiers...0788487//4=7 4781===8===14. One of the reviews said that the service is special and new. Actually I think it is ancient, but unfortunately dropped some time ago. McLean Hardware does not get rid of what works. It is so nice to be in the place, they could have a coffee bar and we could chat with other customers and staff on break. If I could, I would hug the place. read more

My errand was quick and painless, and surprisingly affordable (given business's McLean location). The lily bulb I planted 3 years ago finally developed blooms this year, and grew taller than ever, nearly five feet high. That meant it needed a taller support. I was approached by an employee who understood, led me to the correct area of the store, and I soon walked out with an appropriately long stake priced at a jaw-dropping 99 cents! Compare that to the big box stores whose employees don't know their stock, or the location of things, and sometimes even lack the necessary language skills to do business. Every weekend, it seems like a decision between here or Home Depot -- a trade-off between price and convenience. McLean Hardware has been losing more often lately -- a pack of batteries I purchased there was dead on arrival, and a pack of super glue already hardened on the inside. For the premium you pay here, they really need to ensure that perishable merchandise is taken off the shelves upon expiration. Otherwise, they seem to have most of what I need in a pinch except lumber, of which some (but not much) is ferreted away in the back and only accessible with employee assistance. I hate to say this, but beyond the convenience factor, I do believe that they keep a loyal customer base of middle-aged men returning by employing only the cutest and most cheerful high school girls at the cash registers -- it's not quite as bad as "bikini baristas" but skirts the line, no pun intended. read more

McLean Hardware went above and beyond the call of duty. I had just come from DC, where my window had been smashed and car robbed. I needed to get something to cover my window until I could get it repaired. They got a large trash bag and put it over the window and taped it, Brilliant! Fast easy fix! He said no charge, but I tried to give him $10 dollars and he insisted $5 would do! Great guy, super helpful, I would recommend McLean Hardware to anyone, 5 Star!!! read more

Let me preference this by saying in the late 80s and 90s I used to skateboard on the side of this building when it was Gourmet Giant. I've moved away for some time and recently moved my family back into the area and have been going to McLean Hardware for about six months now. I was shocked to see McLean Hardware move to this location, mainly because this is a huge building and McLean Hardware wasn't very large at their older location. However, they make great use of the space they have. I want to point out three key items: Customer Service: Most of the employees are kids from high school, etc. However, they are extremely friendly and helpful. It's great to walk in and if you're looking for something or need assistance there is someone to help, and they do it with a smile on their face. Their customer service reminds me of a small town mom and pop shop. Selection: Even though the name is McLean Hardware they sell everything you can think of. It's more of a "house hardware" and supply store than just a "hardware" store. This is one of the biggest reasons why I prefer coming here because you can find almost anything that's typically sold at Home Depot, CVS and other "convenience" stores (besides larger or contractor centric items). Price: Usually, smaller stores have higher prices, and being in McLean means the rent is not cheap. However, their prices are pretty fair compared to Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware. Also, if you factor in the extra drive and time it takes to go to the nearest HD, Lowes, etc they're actually cheaper. This is a great store for McLean and it's a nice place to shop and find items you need. If there was one item I would change it would be their closing time. To me 6pm is too early. There are people driving home from work at 4-5pm and don't make it home until 5-6pm. A closing time of 7-8pm would be more ideal. read more

Now THIS is a hardware store. I can wander around the store for hours thinking "I wonder what the hell that is and what it's used for." If they don't have it, you don't need it all that badly. As one would expect, pricier than Home Depot or Lowes, but I always feel so scrungy when I leave HD - there's so much crap in the isles and people clobbering each other for the last 3/4" copper elbow. UGH. I'll pay more at Mclean HW, thank you. (Ok, OK - I bought my two new "will flush a dozen golf balls" toilets at Lowe's, but that's because....well, let's just say I need "the power" every so often and MHW doesn't carry toilets)! read more

Great local hardware store!! Always lots of people working here and very willing to help out!! They seem to go out of their way to hire lots of local teens, which I think is really nice! Years ago my child's tricycle broke and on the way to their preschool, I stopped here. They fixed it for no charge! That's just the type of place they are! Yes, I'm sure you can find prices sometimes that are better on Amazon.com but you'll feel a lot better shopping at a local business like this!! Now that I'm a homeowner I have to get hardware more than ever before. I'm glad I found McLean Hardware. It's one of the old "mom and pop" type places that managed to survive the rise of the Home Depots and Loweses. Great location, reasonable prices and helpful staff make it my go-to place for hardware needs. One thing though -- they just moved over to Chain Bridge Road across the street from the Giant. Go here first, support your local stores, then shop Home Depot if you must. I find 80% of the time they have what I need and expert advice if I want it. They will special order most anything. The people are great, they hire local high school kids all year round, and it's just a plain good experience. And they are not ACE so they carry whatever they want to carry which means the have that weird 7/8" castle nut you were looking for that on one else had and they will sell you ONE for the price of $0.28. You just can't beat it. About the only thing they don't stock well is lumber (but they have some plywood and 2x stuff). The best place locally for that is the Sheets lumber yard in Vienna, VA (but they keep bankers hours.) read more

High ratings for the vast variety of what they have, but also for the staff. As a recent widow, I have been thrust into doing and needing things I never knew about. The staff, many high school kids, are friendly and helpful. Staff members have walked me through how to replace parts and guided me to appropriate items. Need a furnace air vent? They have it. Need some plant pots? Got those too! I've been amazed at what they carry (i.e., pleasantly surprised). I've been able to find reputable handymen, power washers, etc., based on recommendations from the store. Cost? To me it's comparable to the major chains. And add in the major customer service benefit, it's not worth traveling elsewhere. I highly recommend this store! read more

I have shopped at McLean Hardware for a couple years. It has majority of the essentials that are needed for basic home needs and is the most convenient since it is the only hardware supply shop in McLean. Home Depot and Lowes are a little too far. The employees are friendly and courteous. I am not really a hardware knowledgeable person, and they guide me with all of my questions. The prices here are moderately reasonable. The employees also help me to my car when I need assistance as well. The only strife I have about this place is that I think that it is dimly lit. Maybe it could be of my old age or eyes, but sometimes it is a little difficult to read some of the products. Highly recommended and a important shop in the McLean community. read more

It used to be that you went to a local hardware store to get stuff and it was less expensive than Lowe's, Home Depot or Heckingers (I'm dating myself here). This place is EASILY 30% more expensive than Home Depot and has less than 1/4 of the selection available. Just go to Home depot, alright? I've only dealt with these guys on the phone but I can tell you - they're great for giving you honest and straightfoward advice before selling you anything. I remember I needed to get candle soot off of my walls as a part of my moveout cleaning and after many bouts with 409 and other "organic" cleansers (that don't do crap except for the simple stuff, by the way), I called McLean Hardware and asked if they had dry sponges so I could gently get the stains off of the wall. Instead of saying, "yes, we have them, come in and buy them now," the guy on the phone tells me that instead of buying that, to try Bar Keepers Friend first. I do, and it came off like a charm. I'm going to have to shop these guys first (plus they're closer than Home Depot) if they continue to have service like this with straight advice! read more
