This is my "local" and I love the place. I love walking up and down the aisles. We are greeted immediately when we come in and assistance is offered. They usually offer u- advice if you need it. The prices are a little more than big lot stores but its is worth it. Also, they provide a community service by hiring local kids as clerks and floor staff. McLean has been exceptionally helpful by providing telephone order service with curbside pick up during the quarantine. read more

I needed a replacement brass door knocker and mailslot as I was getting my door painted and to my surprise, the painter removed the existing hardware. When I saw how brown and stained it was, I wanted to replace it same-day with new brass hardware. I went to four hardware stores and no one had the right sizes. At McLean hardware, however, a gentleman took the time to help me shine the existing hardware and he literally got rid of the old brown stain and made it look brand new again. I couldn't believe my eyes. Our front door looks good as new with the new paint job and revitalized brass hardware. I also ended up finding several that I needed. They earned a customer for life. I love this place for so many reasons, every time I set foot in here I get happy. Customer service is the best you'll find anywhere, starting with the fact that you are warmly greeted at the door by one or more people offering to help you. I also appreciate that they employ many local teens, giving them very practical training in supplies they will need as adults as well as customer service. I would pay extra just to have a teen be friendly and helpful these days, but at McLean Hardware you don't have to pay extra because the prices of the items they sell are very competitive, even with online. If you consider the time savings and liberal return policies of McLean Hardware versus online or big box stores, the prices are actually a bargain. They are also well very well stocked, and live up to their motto, if we don't have it, you don't need it. And if you don't know how to fix something simple, they will often just do it for you for free. Today, I just went in for grass seed, only needed a little and was dreading buying a big bag that I didn't need. No problem, they had open bins of different grass seeds, so you could take only what you need. And one of the teenagers told me the differences in the varieties and scooped it out for me. The customer service at this store is beyond expectation. I needed some shelve brackets for a cabinet that was made in Sweden. The standard brackets were too big. The person who helped me found something that fit but needed some modifications. I bought them and he took them home, modified for me. I went back a couple of days after and got them. He actually made extras for me, in case I need more in the future. They fit perfectly. I don't think any other hardware store employees would go that extra mile to help a customer for such a minor thing. This will always be my go-to store. read more

I shop local whenever I can. Been going to my Arlington / Westover hardware store for awhile now but I work in McLean frequently. I needed keys, googled 'hardware' and found this gem. Ditto to the prevailing 'customer service' theme; the 'kids' here are seriously outstanding young adults who are getting great training for life in this place. Kudos to management. And they do have so much more than typical 'hardware' store; I bought gifts for my 7 yr old nieces here for the garden, got my mom some great lighting, and got my keys made in record-time. Can't say enough great things. And female manager(?) was 4th person to offer to help me, and told me about 'ladies night' the weds after thanksgiving/ wine and cheese event for females...I'm a networker by trade so I LOVED this info and bringing my 'girls' to this one in the fall (it's July btw!) It's refreshing in this hectic area to feel a more simple, more fundamental connection to the community and this did it for me obviously. There's a reason it's still in business! read more

McLean Hardware is a local institution...very helpful staff, great variety of tools and doo-dads! Recently moved from their long-time location on Old Dominion Drive, McLean Hardware now occupies the former Giant Gourmet store space on Old Chain Bridge Road, in the same shopping center as Books-a-Million and Total Beverage. Parking is free, there's rarely a line at the cashier, and the employees know where things are. What a contrast to the megastores! I have always been able to find whatever I need here, especially in high school when I took physics class and had a bunch of projects to do- nuts, bolts, nails, certain types of glue, mouse traps, etc. The people here have always been helpful and friendly; this place is one of the rare local hardware stores that isn't as overwhelming and aggravating as Home Depot. I have lived in McLean for over 30 years, and do a lot of handyman work around the house. McLean Hardware is great and the place to go - period. Whenever I travel the long distance to Home Depot or Lowe's, I find that they are out of stock, don't have the right part, and I can wander endlessly trying to find the item I am seeking - and there is never anyone with an ounce of knowledge. McLean Hardware is just the opposite - they greet you as you come in, take you to the item you are seeking, and let you know how to install it. And, most impressive, whenever I have done a price comparison, I have found they are about the same price as the Home Depot/Lowe's price. Oh yes, = the parking is easy and close. I've been looking for screws for our kitchen cabinets' knobs. I couldn't find the right size at Home Depot. I got the screw size and codes I need from the website I purchased the knobs from (the screws included was too short) and brought the screws to McLean Hardware store. A gentleman stood in front of the cashier asked me if I need any help right after I entered the door. I gave him the code of the screws and right away, he led me to the aisle and pulled out a box. The length and diameter was exactly what I need. They don't sell a whole bag, but I do need quite a few. They still have enough for me. In and out only took me less than 5 min. What a great experience. My husband went there maybe two months ago to look for a special kind washer and he found it also. He was helped by a high school kid, who he said was very knowledgeable and polite. A neighborhood hardware store like this (although I don't live right in McLean, but not far away) is exactly what we need. I will check out this store first before I go to home depot from now on. This is a pretty good hardware store. Usually plenty of employees are around to help you with your purchase and most of them are very helpful. The store has a good selection and for such a small size I do have to say they cover a lot of ground with their inventory. Price is about comparable with the big box stores. This store seems to have everything. I used to go to Home Depot, thinking I would get a better selection, then I realized that on everything from shovels to screws to caulking to garden hoses McLean Hardware has a better selection. Their helpful staff is always available. Someone usually greets you as you enter and offers to show you to whatever you came for. Nuts and bolts you can buy in any quantity -- as few as a single part if that is all you need. They have plenty of parking just a few steps from the entrance. read more

I've been shopping at this place for over a decade. They carry just about everything you could need from a hardware store. The only thing I can think of that they don't have is lumbar and wood for small home projects. When you need a pine board or a single 2x4 and to have to drive to HDepot is a drag. Otherwise they're ideal. The staff is a surprising mix ranging from high school kids to retirees; all friendly and knowledgeable. If one doesn't know the answer, they are quick to find an associate who does. Seems they pride themselves on helping to solve your hardware problems. read more

McLean Hardware is exactly the sort of store that we want in our communities ... and that is driven out by chains. 1. Walk in and people say hello ... and ask to help you. 2. They know what their domains ... and if one staff person can't answer the question, they find someone who can. 3. They help find solutions ... which, at times, have been 1/100th of the cost of what I'd thought that I was going to spend. 4. They hire kids from in the community for part-time jobs, donate to local activities, etc ... Yes, it will "cost" me more than Home Depot -- but it delivers far more value. So, my wife goes to purchase a 50 lb bag of sand. 5 grown men standing around with their fingers up their butts. When my wife asked them to get the sand, they told her to drive around back and get the bag. She was told the same thing by 3 different "men". You aren't men at all. You are women. Now, my wife's back is out because your mothers did not raise you right nor does your boss demand courtesy from you. You just lost a customer who visits your store at least every weekend. read more

we usually like this store, but recently purchased a $600+ BBQ grill and paid to have it delivered and hooked up to our gas line (which we were told was included). when it was delivered, we were told that they do not do hook-ups. my husband drives a toyota tundra, so the only reason we got it delivered was to pay for the gas line connection part. read more

Not only is it an amazingly close hardware store, but every time I go I am always able to find what i'm looking for. Since moving to the old Gourmet Giant space across the street from the regular giant they are even closer. This would be without a doubt 4 stars, except over half the time I need to run in to pick something up to finish a project it's just after 4pm on Sunday and I'm trying to wrap something up and instead of being able to walk 2 minutes to pick it up I have to go drive 15 minutes to find another hardware store because they've already closed up. End up making the idea of convenience pretty inconvenient - i either stock up extra to finish a project in case I might need more or i'm stuck driving to another hardware store anyway. read more

This is one of several local hardware/homeware stores in Arlington/McLean, but generally in my view the best. Customers are almost always - unless the place is terribly busy at the time - greeted at the door by someone offering to help or point you toward what you need; they are invariably knowledgeable about what the store carries, and even in giving advice if you need it. Second, I can't recall a time when I went in and found they didn't have what I needed. Their selection is very extensive for a smallish store. Third, regarding the competition: It's a personal choice: you like local stores, or you like big-box places. For me if I need a truckload of something, or want to pick from a huge selection of ceiling fans, it's the big store. For most of my typical home projects, where I need just an item or two for a $20 or $30 purchase, I weigh the two hours I would kill driving to and from home Depot, wandering the aisles for an hour without finding what I need (v. 30 minutes total to MHW), and it's no contest. Besides, I have found McLean Hardware often has stuff I can't find at Home Depot, and often their goods and brands are of better quality than in those big-box places. read more

I give McLean Hardware 5-stars for old school service. There is always someone to help you. A point made by the a previous reviewer is that some of the staff are high school age. I find them very helpful, but not as knowledgeable. Therefore, if, I have something a little more complicated I go to an older staff member and in the past was satisfied with their knowledge base. It is definitely not a box store, so the prices are more expensive for most things. However, if you need help at Home Depot I challenge you to get it as quickly. read more

I've shopped at McLean Hardware on a regular basis for 16 years. As a resident of McLean, it's great to have a local HW store that has most of what I need without driving more than a couple of miles. The store also has employees greet you at the door to walk you to the things you need - all the while providing any needed advice. I went here recently with an odd HVAC filter that I thought needed replacing. Since it was unusual, I decided to go someplace where people could tell me something more than at Home Depot. The guy told me right away, just wash it clean and keep using it, i.e. it's not the disposable kind. They lost a sale, but they have a loyal customer for future needs. read more

The high school students working in the store were ten times friendlier and helpful than the salesmen/managers I dealt with. While the students may still be in learning mode, I rather work with them than have to deal with the rudeness I experienced from the sales managers. I do not plan on going there again. read more

They have pretty much anything you need in terms of hardware. I just needed a couple padlocks and the employees were friendly and immediately guided me to where they were. Although, I can tell you even though I rarely go there, it's extremely organized which makes it easy to find things. It's a nice place if you want to get away from all the Home Depots, Lowes, Ace's, etc. It's a great small business to support as well. Prices are what you would expect, nothing outrageous. read more
