This hardware store looks small from the outside, but once you step inside you will be able to see that it's quite extensive. We recently returned to the states, and I came here to get some things for the house we are renting. Their plant selection is impressive, and I got a couple of geraniums and petunias for the deck.. There is also a lot of things for the outdoor grill like charcoal and even a couple of new Webber grills. I made a mental note of that to come back at a future date. I also needed to get a couple of brackets and screws to repair two doors and some closet shelves. They opened early today even though it's a weekend and I appreciated that. This place has come a long way since I first started visiting 10 years ago or something like that. Bought a toilet flush handle, couldn't get it to unscrew, took it back to get help, Jono saved the day and got it working quickly and efficiently. This is what your local hardware store is all amount, real help easily and quickly available and great customer service. I attempted to patronize this establishment to have a key made for my vehicle. This was before COVID impacted our area as it has. Upon entering the store, I was told that my key was physically there at the store but it could not be programmed and a definitive date to program my key could not be provided. There was a heavyset Hispanic male who was extremely rude and unprofessional. I could not understand his hostility and his attitude about my inquiry about my key. He was almost attempting to bully me into taking my money back. Damon was extremely helpful, as were another young short Hispanic male. Recently, I went by this establishment because of its proximity to my travels and they still have no idea when the can make auto keys not program any. What a freaking waste! I've literally been involved in this process for MONTHS! Patronize another ACE, you won't be sorry. read more

Really great customer service! I brought in an old clock that needed a new battery, but I didn't know what kind (it wasn't labeled and the old battery had long been lost). The guy at the front desk took one look, grabbed the right battery, and even popped it into the clock for me! I was really impressed and appreciate the extra level of service. You can search their inventory on their website as well, and then show them what you're looking for and they'll help you find it in the store (I did this on another visit). Overall, really glad I have this in the neighborhood - their prices are fair and they're really eager to help you fix whatever problem you're trying to solve! read more

Recently, had an above and beyond outstanding customer service experience at the Petworth Ace Hardware in D.C., specifically with Randall. I had stopped by the store to buy electrical parts for a lamp that was not working and wasn't sure it could be fixed. Luckily, the always friendly and helpful staff at the Petworth Ace introduced me to their co-worker Randall. Randall patiently listened to my concerns, took a close look at the lamp and thought he could fix it for me while I waited. I watched in amazement as he worked with skill to fix the lamp, stopping briefly at times to help other customers. To my joy, he was able to fix the lamp. The scope of his knowledge, his friendly caring nature, his wonderful sense of humor, and solid familiarity with the items being sold in the store is impressive. I am so thankful and appreciative to Petworth Ace for having such a truly exemplary employee as Randall on their staff. read more

The "helpful hardware folks" are DEFINITELY NOT plentiful in this (pl)Ace. I usually for to the bigger home improvement stores, but I wanted to try to buy smaller and support local neighborhood businesses... now I see why I don't. This is not the place to come if you would like an expedient visit... or if you want consistent customer service. There are less than a dozen parking spaces at this store, which are shared with at least one other business. The street parking in front of/near the store fills up quickly, as there are other businesses nearby. I came in on the day of my move looking for some Kilz for a small touch up paint job. I asked the lady at the cash register, who was unfamiliar with the product (or either didn't understand English, not sure which), so she pointed me to Andrea, who was so very rude. When her colleague pointed me to Andrea for assistance, she brusquely replied "What?! What do you need?" (Dropping that nasty attitude would be a start...). I calmly repeated my request and she points and mutters, "Over there..." I look at her quizzically like "Over there where?" before she adds the aisle number. Sheesh. The store is only so big. Would it KILL you to at least walk me over there? I wander over to the aisle and this nice hipster dude working in the paint section asks me if I need any help. (FINALLY! Someone who WANTS to do their job!). I tell him what I need and he walks me right to it. The size is MUCH bigger than I wanted, and he informs me that the product also comes in a smaller spray can form. Perfect! I got what I needed and was quickly on my way, thanks to the hipster dude. In my opinion, this place is trying to do too much. I think I saw what I think were fancy craft sodas, neighborhood art and all kinds of other non-hardware stuff in what is supposed to be a hardware store (and not a very large one, at that). Maybe they should invest more time and effort into hiring more helpful, knowledgeable staff instead of stocking the shelves full of useless novelty crap and employing people who either can't or don't want to help customers. This was my first visit, and my last. I'll be going back to the big name home improvement stores from now on. read more

I recently moved to DC and bent the rim on my scooter. Instead of taking it to a bike shop, Genio, Daniero, and Chris helped me disassemble the scooter! They helped me find the right parts and later put it back together. I am SUPER thankful for them, and as one reviewer mentioned, they are truly a neighborhood gem. Pissed. Went to the Ace where the young woman earlier by phone said they had it a nest thermostat. .... i get there. They don't have any. I saw this young lady and asked was she the only young woman working today. She said yes. I told her that I called earlier and she was confident in answering yes they had a neat . I told her that if I had known they didn't have it. I would have gone elsewhere. She totally wasted my time as I had someone coming to install it at 4 pm. She then says .. you asked do we "carry it "... why would I ask that ????? I told her I would never ask that .... I asked whether they had one for me to purchase. Total waste of time. :-) ....... it's a hit or miss with this ACE. Customer Service is pretty awful most times. read more

I really love this neighborhood Ace, even though they changed ownership recently. I have been here during the pandemic to pick up furnace filters, refrigerator filters, Cabot stain and 2 new Badger 5 garbage disposals. They have store rules to limit your time shopping and of course require masks, but you can save a lot of time here versus the big box stores. Their prices can be a little higher, my Cabot stain was $5 a gallon higher... but I call this a convenience fee. I was happy to pay a bit more and save time. My 2 garbage disposals failed 2 months apart, very grateful they stocked these replacements. I definitely recommend this store if you are in Petworth.. read more

Great to have a local hardware store. Chris at the counter and the skinny white guy (sorry I didn't catch his name) were a big help.

Always friendly and helpful service. Having moved into a first time home after decades of condos this hardware store is a lifeline. Not always cheapest, but convenience offsets this in my book - paying minimal gas and efficient use of time. Staff is knowledgeable and happy to help. I am treated respectfully despite my clear lack of knowledge and experience. And they put up with my dog (and give him treats!) - a big plus. Be warned though - the coordination between a local franchise and a nationally managed app is not always seamless. Some app prices are not recognized locally (so I had to order on the app and do pickup - inefficient). And i seem to recall some details around a new grill that were included in the nationally advertised offer where not offered locally, although the store did their best to accommodate me so I was ultimately satisfied. And the limited size of the store will limit your options for any particular product. That's the downside of local. (You can always order on line and have it delivered to the store. And frankly I'm finding the same problem more and more with Home Depot). That being said, always happy to support a locally-owned neighborhood business over a box store if I can! read more

I went into the Hardware store for a simple purchase of string for my weed wackier and help with my dull shears . I walked out with a great feeling of "that was the best Customer Service I have received in years". It started with Shannel who took the time to tell me about a service Ace has to sharpen my shears at a Sister store. I was so happy to hear about saving my 20 plus year shears. Shannel cross sold me shears as a replacement because of our conversation, glad she did! Mr. Castro overheard my attachment and did his best to sharpen the shears for me. I came in here yesterday after calling several other hardware stores in the area to see if they could fix a broken screen. I was in a bit of a rush, because I had accidentally damaged someone's window screen. I needed to have this thing re-screened as quickly as possible in order to avoid problems with the owner of the screen. I called at least three other similar hardware stores, and everyone I had spoken to had a two week backlog. I finally spoke with Tony at this store and he said he would be able to fix on the same day. In fact it would probably take less than five minutes to fix. I drove all the way from Virginia to get this situation resolved. Tony was right on point, and he got straight to work. It took him exactly five minutes. Tony actually saved my day, and he did everything he said he would do, at the price he promised! read more

Great local option for hardware/houseware needs in a space that's larger than your average DC hardware space. The Petworth location of Ace has a couple parking spaces in front, but they're awkwardly positioned, so the easier thing is usually just to park on the street in front. Annie's has a really great garden selection (plants and all plant care needs) during the warmer months, and also sells Christmas trees during the winter. They're fully stocked with home improvement items and should have what you need unless it's specialty. One good to know thing about this place is: you can rent a carpet cleaner! It's only around $30/day, though you do also have to buy the cleaning agent unless you have some at home already. You will have to put down a refundable deposit as well. read more

Wish they had more selections for garden and potting soil, and other plant products like beneficial nematodes, I also wish they sold some pots from local potters and other local plant makers. But it's still a great neighborhood hardware store! read more

Very bad experience. I was late for an international flight (my fault) and needed one more set of keys made for a back up cat sitter. Annie's is half a mile away from me and has been reliable in the past. First attempt: Walked there, waited for ages but finally got keys, walked home. 1 mile. One of the keys didn't work. Looked at it--it was clearly elongated. Walked back to Annie's. 1.5 miles. Second attempt: Waited a bit behind a guy with a package, but then when i explained about my flight and that this was my second attempt, i got helped quickly. Got a key. The man (who was nice at least) swore up and down it would work (his literal words were "you can shoot me if it doesn't work"). Walked home. 2 miles. Key didn't work--didn't even fit the lock, couldn't insert it. Third attempted: Walked back. The man was still really nice and apologetic. He called someone else over. They looked at every key in the store it seemed. Finally I said that I really really really had to go and they apologized and said they couldn't help. They told me to go up to the register to get a refund. There was a line of ten people so I walked to the front and asked the woman behind the register if I could get a refund quickly, because I'd been there three times and walked 3 miles total to get there and they'd messed up each time and I had to catch an international flight. She was very unkind and unsympathetic and said "There's a line." I explained again that I was now VERY late leaving for the airport for an international work trip. She said, "Doesn't matter, you have to wait in line." So I left. I'm writing this from the taxi I have to take to Dulles instead of public transportation, because I walked back and forth and waited in so many lines at Annie's today, and still they took my money without giving me the key I paid for for backup care for my cat. Luckily I've got an extra set with another friend, so she'll be okay, but it really sucks. The experience was awful. read more

I'll be honest - I've lived here about 2 years and hadn't always had outstanding service at this location previously. That being said, I've seen a very positive change in this store since it became employee-owned during the pandemic. This week, I was looking to buy the tools I needed to swap out the license plates on my car. Tony offered to do it himself with the tools he had, so he and Chris helped me swap out the old license plates with some especially old rusty screws. Tony also helped me get my old inspection sticker adhesive off the inside of my car so I could put my new DC registration on properly. They went above and beyond and only charged me for the screws! I couldn't believe it. These guys were so friendly and helpful, they really made my day. Every time I come here I leave frustrated. Overpriced ($16 for a single weed wacker spool line refill), understocked, rarely has what I need. I truly must be an idiot to keep trying with this store but it's just so much closer than any others so I'll continue this infuriating dance of pretending like my problem will ever be solved by coming here. I didn't think the day would come where I say that I love a hardware store - but here I am. Annie's is a business that's an integrated part of the community. The folks who work there are welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. Right before a recent snowstorm, as the store was gearing up for folks panic buying shovels, ice melt, etc - I jokingly suggested to the manager that Annie's should hike up the prices for snow shovels since demand would be so high, the store manager said "That's not how we do business". That's basically Annie's in a nutshell. The store is reasonably well stocked with general household goods as well, which is convenient. I love that Annie's hosts The Bike House - a cooperative that teaches people how to fix their own bikes. It says so much about Annie's that they are willing to do this. The store is dog friendly, and dogs get treats! The prices are somewhat higher than what you can find online, but does Amazon give your dog treats - or give you helpful advice on what not to buy? Nope it doesn't. The slight premium is worth the value of having a friendly neighborhood store that's part of the community. read more
