Used to love this place but it's over priced and criminally understaffed - what is management thinking?

If you can't find it here, then it probably should not be in your garden. From the painted pots to the abundance of healthy and beautiful plants, this nursery is awesome. I came here looking for a few items for a landscaping project at my home and found everything I needed. The staff is super helpful and will go out of their way to get you the answers or whatever else you need. Prepare to spend a lot of time looking at the best selection of healthy, well taken care of plants in DMV...imho. If you need an idea of what to do in your outdoor space, this Nursery is the answer. Staff is so helpful and great to talk with! Highly recommend this place!

The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help with questions or guidance. As a photographer with a professional camera (Sony A7RV), it's refreshing to visit a photography-friendly nursery. The staff was overjoyed when I asked if photography was okay. The carts are double-tier and plentiful. When visiting with my mom and wife, we used the top tier for her plants and the bottom tier for ours, which made checkout really easy. The upper tier is also great for taller plants, while the bottom works well for heavier items like soil or planters. I was also made aware that you can buy a planter and flowers of your choice and the staff will pot them for you as well! The American Plant Food Company is surprisingly spacious. They have a large outdoor greenhouse with covered registers, fruit and witch hazel trees, and interesting shrubs. There was even a star-shaped shrub (they shaped a topiary with three vertical stars-super cool!). After parking, it's hard to decide whether to walk around or go inside first. But you'll definitely want to venture into the building before you leave. They have all sorts of knickknacks, watering cans, and seeds here. I know winter is almost over now, but they do have a fairly good selection of metal shovels and spades, which work well both for gardening and the weird snowy/icy weather we get here in the DMV. Be sure to head all the way back for the greenhouse with bamboo, venus flytraps, lemon and lime trees, gardenias, and all sorts of indoor plants. While inside I asked a staff member if I should repot or fertilize an infant (3-4 year old) coffee tree that's about 4.5 ft tall. The tree has been revived over the last two years and produced 1 fruit and 2-3 flowers. I wanted to know how to improve its growth. The staff member handed me Osmocote fertilizer pellets and advised half a capful once a month to help the tree. I'm relieved to finally get an answer, as most nurseries near me had no knowledge. Oh! I also found out from my mom that they offer landscaping and backyard design services. You can call them to come out to your house, advise on your budget and what you want to do, and they'll help you plan it! I'm definitely going to be calling them soon! I highly recommend the American Plant Food Company in Bethesda and will 1000% be back to do all my future garden shopping here!

So, let me tell you about Merrifield Garden centers. I have been to many many landscape and garden…read morecenters over the years. I know quite a few that have been put out of business because of the chain home improvement stores. When you go to Merrifield, you will be bathed in the amazing living variety that can be brought to your home, for indoors and outdoors. The selection is beyond anything I've ever seen, and the staff clearly loves the business. You can browse hundreds of plant and flower options indoors And they also have an amazing selection of patio adornments. The best was my experience today. I needed a garden hose adapter. Sounds simple enough, but this is so uncommon that all of the local chains didn't have anything, and one young man in an orange apron Ron suggested I just get it on Amazon. I stopped here at Merrifield, and they also did not have it in stock. But the gentleman at the counter Suggested that he'd be happy to make one for me if I wouldn't mind waiting for a few minutes. And he jumped into action, grabbing the hose and fittings that he needed and manufactured what I needed for me on the spot. That his old-fashioned service deserves a lot more than just five stars. Please bring them your business!

I've heard great things about Merrifield and though I've visited before, I hadn't bought anything. I took some pics of my lawn, some of the current grass/weeds/plants growing and went to their help desk. It was mid-week, so not too busy. Craig was working the desk and so I don't bury the lead... he was AMAZING. I explained what I was trying to do, that I really knew nothing, and though I had done a little research, I didn't want to trust everything I had read/watched. He walked me through my options. I don't care much about what is growing, just that we have good coverage. Clover was something I was interested in. He explained the clover options as well as some low-maintenance grass options. He even spent a lot of time helping me understand about aerating since it was something I wanted to know more about. I decided to go with grass and clover, hoping a mix might balance between lawn and something for the pollinators. As the spots were relatively small, he said I could just hand spread, especially with the clover seeds being so tiny. While prices are a little higher than the big box stores, looking into this, the products seem to be of a higher quality. Luckily my issue was sort of small to start with so I felt it was a good investment.

We attempted to remove some ourselves but were quickly overwhelmed by the task. I researched native plant landscapers and came across Swamp Rose Co-op. After reaching out, Jeff, one of the owners, came to do a site visit. He was thorough in his presentation of plans and this February we had them come and do bamboo removal and plant some native trees and shrubs to act as a privacy screen. The Swamp Rose team was amazing! They pulled out over 2 tons of bamboo and roots! They planted native trees and shrubs which are thriving. Our backyard woodland meadow dreams are coming true. We have the team coming back in a few weeks to rip out the standard plants seen in the Silver Spring area (liriope, lilies, weeds) to replace with a native garden and we can't wait. One of my favorite aspects of this company is it is a co-op. The employees can be owners, and those who aren't are still paid a living wage as calculated by the MIT living wage calculator. They do excellent work! It is hard to find a native landscaper but this team is fantastic.
