Not only is this a great shopping experience at Christmas, but the Pots and Planters are to die for (but save up your money). They have great after Christmas sales, too. One day after Thanksgiving on a day perfect for Christmas tree shopping, I saw a pile of lopped off branches. The guy said I could have as much as I wanted for free (or go inside and choose nicer quality bundles of a greater variety to buy.). I filled my trunk with Fraser Fir stems. The quality of their plants is excellent; however, their prices are astronomical. Lowe's and Home Depot and even Whole Foods undercut them by about 50%. Brown mulch at Lowe's is $2/bag right now, but American Plant wants $9/bag. The best time to buy plants from American Plant is when they're on sale at the end of the summer (50% off). read more

Do not consider going anywhere else in the area for plants. The quality of the merchandise reflects that their business in plants, shrubs and trees. The variety is stellar nd the range of colors magnificent. Also their customer service is the BEST. Today, Sunday, I drove to the driveway and found a few cars ahead of me. No worries. There were four or five parking guards who helped cars exit and others take their places. At the end of the transaction the enormously polite cashier placed all the various plants...about thirty..into two cardboard boxes. After II put them in the trunk of my car yet another young man came by to bring the trolley back in place. Absolutely delighted to have found American Plant! The store is huge with four separate sections for plants (annual, perennial, tree/shrub and indoor) and all but the indoor section (obvi) are outdoors. This makes shopping during COVID a breeze. Since it's such a large place they provide carts that you can wheel you items around in and have an impressively large amount of staff dedicated just to helping you get your items into your car. The parking lot is relatively small related to the popularity of the place and it's one of the first shopping experiences I've had where I've needed to wait in line in my car. Again, the staff does a great job of managing and provides traffic control and assistance here. While American Plant didn't have what I was looking for (jasmine and gardenias - they had a very small selection of the latter that seemed overpriced), I found so many gorgeous plants, herbs and garden items that I didn't mind at all. Prices and signage could be a little more clear, definitely take your time while browsing as there is a lot to see. In addition to plants they have the most extensive collections of pots I've seen in the area, gardening tools, supplies, seeds, blubs and general decor. First time visiting and I enjoyed the variety of plants and products. However, on Saturday 4/3/21, I asked an associate about how far the business would deliver products. She wasn't certain and ask a gentleman that I assume was a manager. Let's just say he was bothered by my question and proceeded to shove a paper in my hand while saying we deliver anywhere... Took the purchase to the car and came back inside to get a watering can. While checking out the associate was pleasant and professional but couldn't get the cash drawer to open to get change. So this same "manager" was inside the shop, needless to say with the same foul attitude. It was obvious at this point he was bothered by our presence. So I will take my time and money elsewhere. read more

This is one of the closest in plant and nursery's to upper NW Washington DC. So do not expect it to be cheap. Selection really varies from location to location, two locations in MD inside the beltway, and one in Great Falls VA (I have yet to been to the VA location.) Plenty of staff around to help you, the one close in to the DC line has parking staff to assist you in parking, there is also another parking lot around back near the Westbard Giant, if you do not want to cue up at the River Road entrance, which is pretty much always a mob scene in high season. Sign up for their free membership rewards program (other stores charge you) but this one is pretty good for a free program. Just remember to keep your coupons, mailers and plant bucks where you can find them the next time you go shopping with them. Lots of great pots and supplies, and their inside plants are as nice as their outside plants. Enjoy the garden! read more

Stopped in for emergency poinsettias for a next day event. Not only was the staff friendly, they were super knowledgeable and helpful. In no time, I walked out with three beautiful large poinsettias and four mini ones. Someone even helped me carry all of them to my car, which otherwise would have been an interesting thing to watch. So, they won me over with their amazing customer service, but I am also wowed by what they have to offer.... Not only indoor/outdoor plants, but lots of décor items, gifts, and etc. I am looking forward to stopping in again when I have more time to look around. During this time of the coronavirus, I understand that social distancing should be practiced. I also understand that pedestrian foot traffic is important to any business. So imagine my surprise when my husband and I and our small daughter were on a walk and saw that this place was open and were told That there is a line ahead of us... Only when we looked around we didn't see any line. So, we looked a little further and realized that there were cars waiting in the roadway. So, American Plant told us that we were not allowed in because of this line of cars. Last time I checked, cars have nice comfortable seats and air conditioning. I was standing outside in the hot sun with my daughter in a backpack on my back and both my wife and I had our masks on and were not even permitted to enter the facility for 5 to 10 minutes. in fact, we were told to come back when it was a rainy day and that we would have more luck. There is never, no matter what type of Armageddon is happening, a reason to deny foot traffic entrance to your facility to accommodate people waiting in cars. This makes no sense whatsoever. Why are vehicles being prioritized over people on foot? We specifically got the apartment we got so that we would be within walking distance of everything we needed... This is not a way to be accommodating this is not a way to protect people from a virus, this is just plain rude. So, I have a solution for improvement: American Plant, come up with a ticket system or an appointment system to allow customers to call ahead and reserve a time to come and look at products. If they don't show up for their appointment, cancel it and allow one or two more patrons to enter the store. Alternatively, take down people's phone numbers and give them a text when it's their turn to come back. Additionally, you could just use raffle tickets or other such systems like the DMV to give them a number and when it's their time to enter they can pay attention to what number you're currently on and know when they can go inside. This establishment is not a drive-thru nor can you purchase plants while driving through a store... So the prioritization of cars makes no sense and never will. also, there was no pedestrian line or place for a pedestrian line. That could be another solution. We were the only pedestrians there and wee denied entry. I suppose we could have stood in the roadway behind the line of cars and just chanced it and then been allowed in, but like I said, cars have nice comfortable seats and air conditioning and I'm sure they can wait longer than pedestrians with small children in the sun. read more

I hate than I'm updating and downgrading, but.... Today was my first free Friday on my new work-9-days-off-one-day work schedule. I reserved my a handy Zipcar pickup and booked up River Road to American Plantfood ready to buy and garden. Even though it was a Friday morning, their parking lot was full. That's annoying, but probably testament to their popularity. It's also testament to the less than savvy parking attendant. Hint: Do not make the left into the lot! The folks coming south making a right have the right of way and will constantly jump in front of you. Go north, U it and then make the right into the lot! Anyway, I bought some stuff. Seeds, mothers day card (yeah, convenient), plants. They are always super friendly there, and usually VERY knowledgeable. And they pretty much always have everything you need. All that stuff justified the really obnoxious prices. Until today. "Which mint of the 10+ varieties is good for mojitos?" "Oh, probably spearmint or peppermint." No shit sherlock. Thanks for the insight. Turns out they had a big sign overhead describing the varieties... the employees obviously didn't notice it either. Answer = spearmint. Also, they didn't have chili peppers, cayenne peppers, thai basil or a few other plants they normally carry. No, they weren't sold out, they just didn't have them this year. And the organic section was very limited. I bought a tray of plants for like $75 (the absurdity of that hit me as I was driving away) and went to Fragers on Cap Hill for the rest. NOt only did they have just about everything that American did plus some, it was MUCH cheaper. American, you just lost a long-time customer. You can't charge that much for no reason... get over yourself. I appreciate your commitment to organics, but that doesn't justify your absurd price mark-ups. read more

I decided to come back today, just to look around. Someone named Mike approached me to help me. He was sooooooo very knowledgeable, friendly, professional and so helpful!!! We just completed a landscape project with Basem Saah of American Plant and couldn't be happier. Our yard had been in need of some major help due to factors such as dogs, shade and a sloped back yard. Basem came up with some amazing ideas for plantings and hardscapes in the back that would stand up to those issues. We never used our patio before and now we can't leave it because we are enjoying the back yard so much. And...the front yard is even better. They completely transformed a worn and dated yard into an English garden that is perfect for our cottage styled home. Pulling up every day when we get home brings new blooming's and color that looks simply amazing. Then entire process from initial conception, to planning, to execution couldn't have gone better. After looking at the detailed plans that Basem drew up for nearly a month, it was amazing to see them come to life. I don't much about plants. I know that they are often green, and if they start shouting "Feed me, Seymour," I should run away, but otherwise, I'm not much of a plant guy. Still, this location has a wide variety of plants, flower boxes, mulch, birdseed, books, etcetera. They also have a very knowledgeable and helpful sales staff. The only thing that is keeping this store from getting a 5th star is that the parking situation can be a little hairy at times, especially if there a lot of people there in line. If you need to buy plants or plant related items, however, this is a good place to get them. read more

I killed soooo many plants before I stopped buying at Home Depot and Lowe's. I now buy plants and soil exclusively from American Plant and use places like Home Depot only for containers and miscellaneous gardening tools. Turns out I'm not a brown thumb after all-- I just needed to invest in quality plants and good soil. My favorite buys for container gardening: -Dwarf Meyer lemon tree. Doing great as an indoor/outdoor plant 2 years later! -New herbs and annuals every spring/summer. They often run specials on these, so sign up for the newsletter and check your email! -Grapes that actually survived last winter on my balcony. I did nothing special except cover it with mulch in late fall. -Purple wisteria. The perfect roof deck plant. The only drawback? The parking lot gets so jammed that the lines snakes down River Road. read more

Thought this place was really cute but when me and my friends (three college age girls in business casual) walked in they were on us constantly. One of the women working kept giving us a stink eye and the two women at the registers kept walking by us to ensure we were shop lifting. We're just three plant enthusiasts who were trying out a new plant store. Never going there again because I don't wanna have to deal with the staff breathing down my neck while they assume I'm doing something I'm not. Also way too expensive for their plants. Still, it's nice to browse through and look at all the plants. For example, they sell the exact same oncidiums and miltonias that are sold at Trader Joe's. They sell it for $40. TJ sells it for $13. I shop here for my indoor and outdoor garden supplies, but lately I've seen a decline in the care of the indoor plants and very poor customer service. This is the second time I've seen plants infested, beyond infested with spider mites and other pest. This time, every plant I picked up was infested. I told one of the workers in the greenhouse about one of the hanging baskets, and after she looked, she denied it was spider mites and threw the plant down on the floor, and stated, "you can either buy it or not, it's up to you". Then walked away. That was so rude! I asked the other worker in the greenhouse about treating the plant and her response to me was "you can just pick one that doesn't have spider mites". I stated, if this one has them, I'm sure they all do. She took the plant and walked away from me. It's clear that no one here truly cares about the condition of the plants, and seem to hate what they do. I rather order plants and supplies off line or buy plants from lowes and homes depot, than drive a few minutes down the road to this place ever again. read more

I think the staff here is great. Always a good spot to get seasonal flowers, plants, and of course pumpkins and gourds. I knocked a star off because the prices can be a little steep, but I guess that is what you have to expect given the prime location close to the city. This is a neighborhood favorite. I grew up in the area, and cannot say enough fantastic things about this place. The staff is incredible and always knowledgeable, and their selection is unparalleled. In April We bought a Mungo pine mop shrub. The nursery was running a "sale" that if you bought their fertilizer and other product they would give you refund if shrub died within two years. We followed their instructions and in it began to turn brown. In August after we had a landscaper tell us that the Shrub was dying i went back to American Plant after they told me to take a picture and to take a cutting. Did that. They refused to stand by their refund guarantee saying that they only give a store credit. I offered to accept a replacement plant and told me they did not have one and that if they get one the price may go up. Won't be back there anytime soon! read more

Prices seem high (some plants seem way overpriced and some seem expensive but rightfully so due to their rarity/quality). Customer service is great for wrapping up small plants as gifts. Wish they stayed open later, especially once it stays light out for longer, so I could stop in after work. read more

I've been coming here for many years. While the staff remain very friendly and helpful, I was disappointed this year by the increasing high prices of their gift offerings, plants and gardening supplies. Over the summer, I found their annuals to be way higher priced than Benkes. This past weekend, I picked up some packages of spring bulbs only to find 3/4 of them dried up and moldy. I called and they said they will replace them, but I expect more given the high cost. I'm going to look for alternatives. read more

I went to American Plant to create a beautiful garden of indoor plants. They had a great variety, and even were able to give me a comprehensive list of what plants were safe for cats and dogs. I found the employees very helpful. However, the orchid that I purchased ended up having aphids, and infected some of my other plants. They had great customer service and allowed me to bring it back to them in a bag and get another orchid for free to replace it. But then! When I went over to their main table of orchids, I found that all of them had aphids. I let the employees know, and they handled it, but it was amazing to me that they hadn't seen a raging pest issue infecting at least dozens of plants. I ended up getting my new orchid from another table far away, and it looked safe from bugs, but ended up having aphids that I noticed after a few days at home. I can only speak to the indoor plant selection here--but I would 100% recommend going somewhere else for orchids. Even grocery stores seem like safer places to purchase them. read more

All around a great gardening center. I'm not much of a gardener but I have stopped by American Plant to pick up some orchids and orchid related items. The staff is really helpful and nice, and they seem to know a lot more about plants than most people Also, they're very 'green' - not just in their thumb. All their stores are wind-powered and they also encourage organic gardening. Parking is definitely difficult on weekends, so I recommend going during the week if possible. read more
