It's like, I have no idea what I'm doing with repairing my home, and get in my head at just how bad I am at home repair! But this is a place for people like me who are clueless. The staff is great at guessing at my vague description of what I need, my clueless explanation of what's going wrong with my pipes and my complete lack of knowledge of just about anything related to maintaining my home. We made several stops here over the course of a weekend when we were preparing our condo as one set of tenants moved out and another was getting ready to move in. I try to come in here once in a while because the plant section seems a little more extensive (and less expensive) than other plant stores. The staff is always a perfect score because they are friendly on the phone and in person. While not my closest Ace, I do prefer them a bit more than others because of how kind and helpful the staff are. I'm glad this place was here when I needed them, and it's one of the few actual hardware stores located in the city. We had recently purchased a home and I needed to have a key copy made because we only had one. Even though I rolled in minutes before they were closing, a cool employee was able to help !e out. I handed him the original, and he had the copy made in less than one minute. The other thing that I needed to get was a small container of spackle. The previous owner had left us with a few small nail holes in the walls, and my plan is to fill them. Today was my first time in the store, and I noticed that they carry just about everything that you could need for a house. From cleaning supplies, to an entire aisle dedicated to garden related stuff. Outside they have tons of plants and flowers, and I even saw a few pumpkins on display. read more

I get a bit nervous every time I go into a hardware store. Like, everyone is going to turn and look at me like I don't belong (and believe me... they would be right, I am not handy at all!) I was hosting a crafting party at my apartment (again, I'm not crafty either). So while everyone is knitting, and stain glassing, etc. I opted for a craft that's near and dear to my heart... wine cork keychains. It's simple to make, functional, and celebrates my love of WINE! IF YOU GET A DISEASED PLANT, THEY DON'T REFUND OR REPLACE, unlike Home Depot. BUY PLANTS AT YOUR OWN RISK FROM ACE HARDWARE. I got this lovely plant that sat in my living room for a week because I needed soil to re-pot it. It's leaves started turning black. It was away from the sun, since I read that it doesn't like direct sunlight. Now it looked like Greyscale on Shireen Baratheon's face. And you know how she ended up... I brought it back the next week. The plant guy says they don't have a return/replace policy. He said something in my house could have diseased it, while it sat in my living room during those 7 days. And he said, "I wouldn't put anything on the store that had imperfections." But You Did Blanche! So I'm stuck with a $45 diseased plant that will likely die. The best part of living in Adams Morgan is having this hardware store. I moved in about three years ago and this place is my saving grace. I've gotten keys made here, bought a lock and actually had to borrow their lock breaker because I couldn't find my key. The people here are so kind and friendly and always willing to help you find whatever you need. My friend even bought a couple of plant holders for me as I was trying to develop my green thumb. I love when they put up seasonal items because it always get you in the mood for the holidays. They sell paint here and a lot of plants. I wish I could buy that green egg smoker, but my condo will not allow me to have that in the building. I also bought some light bulbs here and again really quick and convenient. No offense to the larger hardware stores, but the smaller the better customer service you'll find. read more

Overall, I have to say the customer service experiences have been great. People are keen to recognize your presence and ask if you need help immediately upon entering the store and/or seeing you in for the first time. I've timed it where I go right when they open so everyone is always getting ready but I have yet to encounter a bad attitude. We have ordered insulation and have carted it home. They do paint match and could help us identify a good paint. Folks have helped us find air filters, joint compound, and brushes. For its size, the store is very well stocked. If items are not in stock, I think you can order them and pick them up at the store. I've also had good phone experiences as well. This urban hardware store stocks a little of almost everything you could ever need. Don't see what you're looking for? Ask Lawrence, Dave, Scott, Ashley, or any one of the helpful staff. They can even give you advice on how to install or fix whatever you need. I recommend bringing in whatever you have questions on: the pipe that you need to find a fitting to, the pillow you want a paint to match, the broken door hinge you need to replace. It makes it so much easier to find the right item. If they don't stock it, they may be able to order it in a few days and will call you when it comes in. Enter your phone number when you check out and they will keep a record of your purchases in case you have returns (even without a receipt) or even need to re-order the same part but don't remember what you got the first time. read more

I just moved to the neighborhood and as a new homeowner have the need to visit hardware store more often than I would like. So many little things that I need to fix and upgrade in my 110 year old "new" home. I have gone to many Ace hardware stores and generally like them as they are more local and friendly. Being a short walk from my house this place seemed like the perfect fit. After visiting this store multiple times I can say that they are friendly and usually helpful. Unfortunately, they are too small and just don't have enough supply. I wanted to replace all the outlets, for example, but they only had 5 in stock. They sent me to the Woodley park ace. I needed a filter for the ac system, again not in stock and needed to go to Woodley. O think they are a fine place for some small stuff and the staff is nice enough. Easy layout to the store with extremely helpful staff - no waiting around searching for someone to help you out here! I had stopped in in need of having two keys copied (for a total of 4 key copies) - and ended up making some repeat visits after one of the copies just would not successfully duplicate. It was a brass key, for the exterior door of an apartment building - no fault of Ace's, these keys are just sometimes REALLY difficult to duplicate! But their key policy is legit: they will remake that darn key as many times as it takes, or you can ask for a refund at any time. Of note: they key I had copied for my apartment door (interior of the building) worked like a charm on the first attempt! I noted this location also makes paint colors, sharpens knives, carries plants (LOVE) and all the other odds and ends that I've come to appreciate about a neighborhood Ace's. I wouldn't recommend trying to park here, as it's right on the busy street, but definitely a neighborhood gem that I will return to for all my odd little needs. read more

Good hardware store for home repairs stuff plus a great selection of basic and more unusual plants (mounted and potted staghorn ferns, air plants, citrus trees, I even spotted jasmine over the summer!), and lots of pots of all kinds. Staff are uniformly welcoming though the level of knowledge varies. The less knowledgeable staff are pretty good about referring you to someone with more experience though for more complex questions. Get their rewards card and you'll get a constant stream of coupons in the mail and via email. read more

Went in to ask for help in buying items I needed to repair a dishwasher. Laurence, the store manager, was AMAZING. When he did not have screws of the correct length, he set up an impromptu machine shop on the checkout counter and cut two screws to the correct length--and then filed them to make sure they would work. I think the sale was 22 cents--but the service was priceless. Super happy to have the store here, it's SUCH a convenient location, and they've done a lot to fit everything they can into the store's small footprint. They have a focus on customer support, and the staff are clearly trained to be as helpful as possible. There is always someone there to try and help answer any questions. However, the staff still seem to struggle to be helpful, even though they are clearly trying hard. They aren't that familiar with the type of things that hardware stores carry, maybe because they seem so . . . young. High schoolers? College aged kids? They clearly want to help, but they don't really know what an L-bracket is, or a door jam, etc. They also sometimes maybe lack a little common sense? I walked in one day, and standing in the store I found an employee and asked if they carried something (I forget what). The woman told me that they weren't open yet and asked me to leave. Turns out it was about 2 minutes til the hour. The door was unlocked to the store, lights were on, no "closed sign, I was already in the store, and she was asking me to walk out, wait in the rain for two minutes, and then come back in.
