They can work with you 1on1 unlike the robot workers at the Depot. True Value is an excellent neighborhood hardware store that has plenty of items you need for daily home repair and upgrades. If you need to get a bigger job done, they'll work with you to order and deliver what you need. I have nothin but good experience here. Old school customer service, polite, low-key, interested, and they somehow have an answer every time. Most recently took a shelf that required a small 1/2" x 1/2" notch to fit in new cabinets. Asked about getting a saw, etc., counter guy said he could do it for me, but would have to charge me. How much? $2.00. $2.00! Threw out random question about resanding/finishing hardwood floors, son of a gun if he didn't have a sander I could rent. Done in five minutes. The hardware store seems to be packed with a lot of stuff, but the help there could be nicer. It was nice to go in and look for things on my lunch break, but I always had a nasty queen acting like I was interrupting them from something more important. I don't live near 17th Street and there are several hardware stores between where I live and this True Value. However, when I can't find what I need at any of those stores I know I can find it here. This is a neighborhood and city gem and a refreshing step back into the days of well stocked (jam packed) hardware stores full of gadgets, widgets, and all sorts of things. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and will go out of their way to help. Example: I needed the Miracle Grow spray hose attachment because my husband wanted to fertilize his fall vegetables. However for the hardware store it was out of season and when I asked the store clerk if they had it he said, "Sure, follow me" and we went through a rabbit hole labyrinth beyond a side door into dark halls with shelves filled with varieties of items, all the way to the back where seasonal things were kept. What I needed was there. Over the years I've found at this store hard to find closet hardware, bronze shellac, eyehooks strong enough to support a sling, paint, paint brushes, pyrex cooking dishes, insect traps, a really good cordless screwdriver, nails and hooks and chain, and all variety of other things we need along this yellow brick road. If you need hardware (loosely defined) that your neighborhood hardware store doesn't have, and you don't want to stomach the big HD, give True Value a call and I'll bet they have what you need. read more

Without these guys, I don't know where I'd be. For such a small store, they somehow always have what I'm looking for. And, most valuable is the knowledgeable and helpful staff. They have helped me out many times including taking the time to show me how to use specific tools and how to choose the right product for the job. They have magicians working behind the counter that solve every single one of your problems. Or tell you how you can easily solve it yourself. Also, I've wandered in for some of the most random things and they somehow MAGICALLY have it in stock. For example...just found washi tape there last night. TRUE VALUE is an apt name for this store! A hardware store is an integral part of any community and this store is a rare gem. They have products, knowledge and service not readily available anywhere else. While visiting my daughter I wanted to help with some of the deferred maintenance in her condo. She had a wrench next to her radiator because the handle spun uselessly. Not only did the gentlemen at True Value know that there were 4 different possible sizes but they had all options in stock. They spent the time to determine which washers were needed for her vintage tub AND put them on the stem I had brought to the store with me. You could spend hours online and never solve these two problems that they handled with ease for less than $20. The wrench is back in her tool drawer and the tub is drip-free. If you want to keep local shops like this, which are an indispensable resource, you have to support them. Before you buy a shower curtain, pansy or lightbulb online remember that you have a great local business you can depend on (and they depend on you.) I work around the corner from the True Value on 17th so I've been in a few times to buy paint, a chain, boxes, etc. I went in today to have a set of keys cut. I love coming to this hardware store because the people that work here are friendly, attentive and really knowledgable. It's like a vintage customer service experience. It's nice to walk into a store and have people greet you, walk you over to the thing you're looking for, explain the difference between the different options, and answer any questions you may have. WOW was blown away by the level of customer service here!!! Honestly, other stores/establishments can take a lesson from these guys! I've stayed at 5 star hotels with less customer centric service. You are greeted at the door, immediately asked if you need help, everyone had amazing positive attitudes. I was personally helped by John and he went way beyond out of his way to help me!! After helping me find the right parts, he even offered to help me assemble a furniture part that I was clueless how to do myself. I've patronized this, my neighborhood hardware store, for years, and the guys there have always been terrific. But this week they really outdid themselves. I needed 15 pieces of glass cut for a picture framing project--all different sizes, ranging from 8x13" to 17x20". The fellow who was helping me took my list of sizes upstairs, I assumed to get me a total price (he'd already told me the price of the largest piece). To my surprise, he'd already started cutting the glass, thinking l'd wait to take it with me. Instead I said I'd come back and get it the next day. When I did, I was handed a very nice package that I could walk home with. The glass was perfectly cut, each piece labeled by size, and beautifully packed. And the cost was just $66. Amazing. A unique experience you'll only find at a wonderful old-fashioned neighborhood hardware store like this one! read more

They seem to have everything I need and don't know where to find. Candy thermometer, chalkboard, gold paint, thumbtacks, glue gun -- they have it all. The guys who work here usually squint at me a little when they hear what I need. Then cheerfully lead me through the maze (and I do mean maze) to find it. There is a connected store with a secret back entrance that has home wares (e.g. the chalkboard, small kitchen things, etc.) Just try not to walk into the laundromat that is in between the hardware and home ware stores ... it's a little awkward to explain that it's not what you're looking for. read more

I went to Home Depot and bought a new set of door locks and two extra key copies. Well, the copies from Home Depot did not work at all. I dropped in to True Value Hardware on 17th and he fixed my keys for me for FREE. He said he was happy to fix a mistake by Home Depot. I wish I had gone here from the start to buy the locks. Very helpful staff. This place is about as big as the customer service desk of your average home depot and serves an urban clientele. It has the usual: paint, electrical, garden, and a really nice housewares division that will save you a trip to Target. Carries a nice paint line. read more

Don't browse, ask for help in the Hardware Store, there's a whole section in the back you'd never know existed if you don't ask. They have gardening stuff, and lumber, and so forth. And they cut stuff to fit, just like at home depot. And they are suitably tolerant of the ignorant. One man gave me great advice on how to "upholster" my chairs with my staple gun. He told me how his wife did it and had total respect for my desire to spend as little energy on it as possible. Others are raving about the separate home store which is useful, but it is the hardware part that really rocks. If I ever get up the energy to paint, I'm buying my paint there out of flat-out loyalty because of all the free help they provide. read more

We needed a piece of wood cut to a specific size to replace a window in order to vent an in-room AC unit. They provided the wood, cut it (approximately) to our specifications and then charged us a quarter. Can't beat that. I've also been there to get duplicate keys made, glue for some DIY projects, along with household items. All my trips have been great. Definitely recommend. read more

They hunt you down to help you out., and I'm sure it's in their mission statement to be as helpful as possible. I feel like everyone in there had some one-on-one attention. I got everything I needed in like 5 minutes and I was out of there. I got keys duplicated, and it only cost $2.29 a pop. The most difficult part was finding the correct door. read more

This is a throwback to real hardware stores. First, it has both a hardware store and a less apparent home-wares store on the other side. Second, they actually can answer questions and suggest things that work. Third, I've never gone in there and not gotten something that will do the job (which I can't say about the big box stores.) Can't see how anyone could give this place fewer than 5 stars. I've been fixing things successfully all my life (I'll be 56 next month), and I'll be darned if a young man there didn't save me from buying a part I didn't need to fix a dripping bathtub spout. Turns out I only needed rubber seats and springs for the single-lever diverter. I'm guessing his knowledge came from work with Habitat for Humanity, because he was definitely the caring type that would work with such a group. I would recommend this hardware store to anyone.
