The staff at True Value on 17th are truly customer service oriented. I went in to have a key made and walked out with 3 other items that I've been meaning to buy but just never got around to before today. The staff seem like they go out of their way to be helpful. While the store is small, it is well organized. I would highly recommend this store! read more

Yo check it: this is da joint! it amazes me that i can walk into a small neighborhood joint and get what i needs and walkout a happy Mr. Fixit. no nneed for home depot here. True Value is the place ya dig. they've been in biz since i been in NW. if i'm workin around Dupont, TV gets it right all they dayum time. I used to hit up Candey (RIP) and also Hechingers but now that is a Best Bye Bye. Read my review on Best Buy. Gettin back to Tru Value - their staff are very friendly and knowledgabble. They can work with you 1on1 unlike the robot workers at the Depot. True Value is an excellent neighborhood hardware store that has plenty of items you need for daily home repair and upgrades. If you need to get a bigger job done, they'll work with you to order and deliver what you need. I have nothin but good experience here. Its also right next to a Micky D's if u hungry on your way out too! read more

Old school customer service, polite, low-key, interested, and they somehow have an answer every time. Most recently took a shelf that required a small 1/2" x 1/2" notch to fit in new cabinets. Asked about getting a saw, etc., counter guy said he could do it for me, but would have to charge me. How much? $2.00. $2.00! Threw out random question about resanding/finishing hardwood floors, son of a gun if he didn't have a sander I could rent. Done in five minutes. This is a real throwback to everything good about small businesses. Also nice housewares store on 2nd level, left side of building (same owner). Check 'em out. read more

Nice to have a real hardware store in the neighborhood. The staff are knowledgeable and accommodating. I stop here fairly often and always find what I'm looking for. read more

They're very friendly and helpful. This place has everything. If you don't see something, just ask, because they're likely to have it tucked away somewhere, be it candles, masking tape, gift wrap or a wrench. read more

The hardware store seems to be packed with a lot of stuff, but the help there could be nicer. It was nice to go in and look for things on my lunch break, but I always had a nasty queen acting like I was interrupting them from something more important. I'm glad others have had better luck here. read more

I don't live near 17th Street and there are several hardware stores between where I live and this True Value. However, when I can't find what I need at any of those stores I know I can find it here. This is a neighborhood and city gem and a refreshing step back into the days of well stocked (jam packed) hardware stores full of gadgets, widgets, and all sorts of things. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and will go out of their way to help. Example: I needed the Miracle Grow spray hose attachment because my husband wanted to fertilize his fall vegetables. However for the hardware store it was out of season and when I asked the store clerk if they had it he said, "Sure, follow me" and we went through a rabbit hole labyrinth beyond a side door into dark halls with shelves filled with varieties of items, all the way to the back where seasonal things were kept. What I needed was there. Over the years I've found at this store hard to find closet hardware, bronze shellac, eyehooks strong enough to support a sling, paint, paint brushes, pyrex cooking dishes, insect traps, a really good cordless screwdriver, nails and hooks and chain, and all variety of other things we need along this yellow brick road. If you need hardware (loosely defined) that your neighborhood hardware store doesn't have, and you don't want to stomach the big HD, give True Value a call and I'll bet they have what you need. read more

Without these guys, I don't know where I'd be. For such a small store, they somehow always have what I'm looking for. And, most valuable is the knowledgeable and helpful staff. They have helped me out many times including taking the time to show me how to use specific tools and how to choose the right product for the job. I've also had many, many keys made here and every single one has worked perfectly! read more

I'm not really into home repair stuff so when it's time for a little home project I'm glad I have a place like this to turn. They always ask me if I have any questions and point me in the right direction (which is definitely necessary because this store is a maze!). Everyone, staff and customers, have been really friendly. Hooray for avoiding the big box stores and getting projects completed! read more

They have magicians working behind the counter that solve every single one of your problems. Or tell you how you can easily solve it yourself. Also, I've wandered in for some of the most random things and they somehow MAGICALLY have it in stock. For example...just found washi tape there last night. It's a tiny shop thats chock full of anything you could imagine. If they don't have it, the home goods store above them probably does. read more

If I could give them ten stars I would. I've been in there at least 20 times for things small and big over six years living in the neighborhood and they are always friendly, very well informed and helpful in diagnosing what I need to solve any particular home issue and everything is very reasonably priced. True neighborhood gem. read more

The store is small and cramped, but the staff is extremely helpful. Not only are they friendly, but they know their stuff and are always wiling to help. I can go in there without knowing exactly what I need or what it's called and they'll help me without making me feel like an idiot. read more

I work around the corner from the True Value on 17th so I've been in a few times to buy paint, a chain, boxes, etc. I went in today to have a set of keys cut. I love coming to this hardware store because the people that work here are friendly, attentive and really knowledgable. It's like a vintage customer service experience. It's nice to walk into a store and have people greet you, walk you over to the thing you're looking for, explain the difference between the different options, and answer any questions you may have. Highly recommend this place. read more

You can be in and out in a tenth of the time than you'd spend going to Home Depot, and the chances are better that you'll find what you need. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful. I've been doing serious renovations and the place is a godsend. read more

I was in and out in under 5 minutes to get my keys duplicated and it cost under $3. Awesome and friendly staff

I've patronized this, my neighborhood hardware store, for years, and the guys there have always been terrific. But this week they really outdid themselves. I needed 15 pieces of glass cut for a picture framing project--all different sizes, ranging from 8x13" to 17x20". The fellow who was helping me took my list of sizes upstairs, I assumed to get me a total price (he'd already told me the price of the largest piece). To my surprise, he'd already started cutting the glass, thinking l'd wait to take it with me. Instead I said I'd come back and get it the next day. When I did, I was handed a very nice package that I could walk home with. The glass was perfectly cut, each piece labeled by size, and beautifully packed. And the cost was just $66. Amazing. A unique experience you'll only find at a wonderful old-fashioned neighborhood hardware store like this one! read more

So friendly and helpful. Good prices. Excellent service. Wide selection of items. Couldn't ask for a better local hardware store!

They seem to have everything I need and don't know where to find. Candy thermometer, chalkboard, gold paint, thumbtacks, glue gun -- they have it all. The guys who work here usually squint at me a little when they hear what I need. Then cheerfully lead me through the maze (and I do mean maze) to find it. There is a connected store with a secret back entrance that has home wares (e.g. the chalkboard, small kitchen things, etc.) Just try not to walk into the laundromat that is in between the hardware and home ware stores ... it's a little awkward to explain that it's not what you're looking for. read more

I've been going there for the last 8 years - to buy bulbs, make doubles of keys,-- i always found what I wanted and needed. The staff are super sweet and helpful. It's the kind of shop that makes you feel that it is your neighborhood, and home. read more

My first experience was graced with a lot of sarcasm from the store employees since I did not know the name of the item I was looking for. Second time I was in there they had the part. Third time it took 3 different staff members to tell me they didn't have the part, they had just sold it. I will be going else where next time. read more

I went to Home Depot and bought a new set of door locks and two extra key copies. Well, the copies from Home Depot did not work at all. I dropped in to True Value Hardware on 17th and he fixed my keys for me for FREE. He said he was happy to fix a mistake by Home Depot. I wish I had gone here from the start to buy the locks. I will only be using this hardware store for such a nice act of kindness. Thanks again! read more

Great little neighborhood place! I stopped in to get two keys made and for ant bait. In and out in under 5 minutes; it took me longer to lock up my bike! When's the last time you said that for a big box hardware store? A+ for efficiency and friendly service. read more

Very helpful staff. This place is about as big as the customer service desk of your average home depot and serves an urban clientele. It has the usual: paint, electrical, garden, and a really nice housewares division that will save you a trip to Target. Carries a nice paint line. read more

Don't browse, ask for help in the Hardware Store, there's a whole section in the back you'd never know existed if you don't ask. They have gardening stuff, and lumber, and so forth. And they cut stuff to fit, just like at home depot. And they are suitably tolerant of the ignorant. One man gave me great advice on how to "upholster" my chairs with my staple gun. He told me how his wife did it and had total respect for my desire to spend as little energy on it as possible. Others are raving about the separate home store which is useful, but it is the hardware part that really rocks. If I ever get up the energy to paint, I'm buying my paint there out of flat-out loyalty because of all the free help they provide. read more

Wide selection, convenient location & great customer service! Showed up with my little pink grocery cart to buy mulch . They let me borrow a complimentary dolly to get 3 huge bags back to my house 4 blocks away. Definitely will be a repeat customer! read more

Really nice guys there. Knowledgeable and very helpful. Feels very "homey" like it's my uncle or cousin helping me with my hardware needs. My go-to place near my office for misc. hardware stuff (usually duplicating keys). read more

TRUE VALUE is an apt name for this store! A hardware store is an integral part of any community and this store is a rare gem. They have products, knowledge and service not readily available anywhere else. While visiting my daughter I wanted to help with some of the deferred maintenance in her condo. She had a wrench next to her radiator because the handle spun uselessly. Not only did the gentlemen at True Value know that there were 4 different possible sizes but they had all options in stock. They spent the time to determine which washers were needed for her vintage tub AND put them on the stem I had brought to the store with me. You could spend hours online and never solve these two problems that they handled with ease for less than $20. The wrench is back in her tool drawer and the tub is drip-free. If you want to keep local shops like this, which are an indispensable resource, you have to support them. Before you buy a shower curtain, pansy or lightbulb online remember that you have a great local business you can depend on (and they depend on you.) I'm the best mom ever (with a little help from True Value.) read more

We needed a piece of wood cut to a specific size to replace a window in order to vent an in-room AC unit. They provided the wood, cut it (approximately) to our specifications and then charged us a quarter. Can't beat that. I've also been there to get duplicate keys made, glue for some DIY projects, along with household items. All my trips have been great. Definitely recommend. read more

They hunt you down to help you out., and I'm sure it's in their mission statement to be as helpful as possible. I feel like everyone in there had some one-on-one attention. I got everything I needed in like 5 minutes and I was out of there. I got keys duplicated, and it only cost $2.29 a pop. The most difficult part was finding the correct door. read more

WOW was blown away by the level of customer service here!!! Honestly, other stores/establishments can take a lesson from these guys! I've stayed at 5 star hotels with less customer centric service. You are greeted at the door, immediately asked if you need help, everyone had amazing positive attitudes. I was personally helped by John and he went way beyond out of his way to help me!! After helping me find the right parts, he even offered to help me assemble a furniture part that I was clueless how to do myself. I recommend this place hands down if you need anything home improvement related. read more

Local hardware needs, key copying, what more can you want in walking distance? Customer Service here is top notch. It's a city, I dont expect home depot, and this might be better. read more

What a pleasure to get a quick, friendly answer to my call about needing copies of keys and hearing the price is very fair. It's shops like this that keep Dupont Circle feeling like the great neighborhood it should. Thanks True Value! read more

This place is flat-out awesome. Huge selection, from the most obvious to the most obscure, at good prices. But the key is the customer service--the staff is ridiculously friendly and helpful. They also give my dog treats. A pleasure to visit. read more

These guys are always so helpful. I've gotten keys copied, bought herbs/plants, and asked them a ton of questions. They are always courteous and have what I need! read more

This is a throwback to real hardware stores. First, it has both a hardware store and a less apparent home-wares store on the other side. Second, they actually can answer questions and suggest things that work. Third, I've never gone in there and not gotten something that will do the job (which I can't say about the big box stores.) And fourth, it is deadly convenient -- no schlepping out to the hinterlands every time I need something. read more

Can't see how anyone could give this place fewer than 5 stars. I've been fixing things successfully all my life (I'll be 56 next month), and I'll be darned if a young man there didn't save me from buying a part I didn't need to fix a dripping bathtub spout. Turns out I only needed rubber seats and springs for the single-lever diverter. I'm guessing his knowledge came from work with Habitat for Humanity, because he was definitely the caring type that would work with such a group. I would recommend this hardware store to anyone. Period. read more

What a great store! Very friendly staff who get the job done. In my case, I needed to get a copy of a key done. After two failed attempts at other locations, they gave me a perfect key copy. Wish I knew about you guys sooner! Would have avoided unnecessary stress. read more

Really friendly, efficient service here. Will definitely be coming back for my various hardware needs.
