First stop was Trek Bicycle on Westwood Street. No stocks available, and they seemed too busy to answer questions. Hmm...that kinda layback and hipster attitude seemed far too familiar as I'm in the coffee business for 20+ years. Then we rushed over to Kinetik Cycles. Sales person seemed way too passive, and when we were shown a couple choices (my goddaughter needs a small or an extra-small frame), not much help was given about the seat height adjustments. I understand that the Kona we first tried was built a certain way where the seat stem was way too long for a small frame. The minimum seat height was so tall that it defeated the purpose of calling it "size small". We asked how we could make it possible to accommodate the height so my goddaughter could do a proper test ride. (Of course I know of a solution...just find a shorter seat stem and substitute it for a few minutes worth of test ride)...Nothing from the sales person, just a shrug of the shoulders, and followed by "if you buy the bike, we will saw the seat stem short for you". The more senior looking person behind the counter didn't offer any help as well. So basically it's like take it (for a spin) or leave it situation. I was seriously not impressed but as I mentioned earlier, I was on a mission to get a bike today. We've finally decided on a Devinci. Next, I asked about bike lock choices, and I forgot the brand I've recently bought (ARBUS...I later recalled). So I described the lock as metal plates folded together kinda lock. The sales rep said they do not carry such style, except u-shapes, and chains. As I proceeded to pay for the bicycle, helmet, and gloves I realized the ARBUS locks were just stacked in boxes, right next to the other locks. So after this long story, I guess one can comprehend how lay back and unenthusiastic the service was. And I'm about to make a point here...Kinetik Cycles, you've dropped the ball. I could have bought the second bicycle for myself on the same visit, but I've made up my mind to make that purchase somewhere else on my way back to Vancouver the same day. Please refer to the enclosed receipts...one purchase from Kinetik Cycle (which I reluctantly went through due to a tight time window), one purchase from Rad Cycle on Fraser and Broadway (very pleasant experience from real people working, and providing real service and advise at a greasy and not very rich looking shop). Not going back for more hipster attitude.

Two weeks after I bought my bike the pedal started sticking so I brought it back, they changed it for me without charging me. It's not a super big store but they have a good selection of helmets and other accessories. Bikes do go fast these days in the time of covid though which is why when I found the size/color and brand (specialized) I wanted I bought it right away. We have barely a clue on what to go with and certainly required advice for the right bike. While their supply was limited, he was able to recommend a bike that fit our daughter perfectly. He allowed our daughter to give the bike a test in the parking lot and didn't rush any decision. In fact, another employee did a quick tweak to the bike and let my daughter go for another spin to see if it made the use of the gears any easier. We also learned that they have a buy back / trade in program for children's bikes since the kiddos tend to outgrow their bikes quite quickly. I recommend anyone in the area to include this place when seeking out a bike. I bought my previous bike from them about 10yrs ago and remember the same high level of service and support.

I was so dissatisfied with my experience at Trek today I downloaded Yelp to write a review…read more The clerk (not bike knowledge god like they think they are) snatched 2 different objects out of my hands while I was holding them either reading the box or comparing colours with other products and took them up to the till. Presumably this has something to do with Covid precautions, which makes little sense as I had already touched the items with my hands. He is wearing the same rubber gloves he used with the last customer, has no face mask and was ok hovering right next to me while I looked at the shelf. If a customer not handling products is the procedure, post it on the wall and greet them with it or explain that. Do NOT snatch items out of your customer's hands, then walk to the till with it assuming that I am going to buy it. Covid is not an excuse for having zero interpersonal communication abilities and grossly high pressure sales tactics. A message to the staff at Trek: you never know who you're talking to, and being condescending toward a more highly qualified mechanic and cyclist than yourself is not a good way to earn repeat business. Remember that you work in retail sales and are no more special than a sandwich artist. Also remember that grabbing things out of people's hands is rude and shamed upon even for toddlers. I will not be returning to buy even a valve core from these nimrods, and I am going to make it my mission to spread this experience with my family and friends in the local bike and dirt bike community.
