Today I bought my second bike from John Henry bikes. Last year I decided to start biking to work and checked out the annual bike sale "John Henry days" and I bought an entry level cruiser. The whole sale experience was very pleasant and I've enjoyed taking my bike there for the past year for free check ups and adjustments and the staff are always very friendly and happy to help. Well, a year into biking to work, it was time for an upgrade, both Tristan and Erin were great in determining what kind of cyclist I am, and what kind of bike I wanted. They took the time to measure me and find the right size of bike for my frame. Being new at cycling to work, they are very patient in answering my questions and I feel part of the cycling community. I have really appreciated that they are also cyclists and readily share their knowledge, experiences, and their opinions on products. They're a family run business, so they are particular about the products they carry and won't sell just any product, but stand behind their choices. For example, when I asked for a bike lock recommendation, I was directed to a new abus lock that has a good reputation and that all the guys are now using. That gave me confidence in my purchase. I'm very excited to break in my new bike and will continue to use and recommend John Henry Bikes. read more

Super helpful, friendly staff, and a good selection of bikes with a medium-small selection of some bike parts! Awesome shop!

I recently purchased an electric mountain bike from your store. I am pleased to report I got excellent service while buying the bike. All my questions were answered thoroughly and carefully. I received alot of help in choosing the right bike for me. I never felt rushed. When I left the store my bike was all set up, sized and ready to go. Thank you for your excellent customer service. Recently purchased a norco fluid mtb. After riding I wanted to go up 2 teeth on the chain ring. Got out the tools and began to disassemble. The center bolt torque is max 30 ft lbs. I use park tools same as the bike shops and the center bolt was so tight it stripped. I contacted norco and the response was we don't deal with our customers we only deal with the seller. Then the representative insulted me saying the only people who should work on their bike is the seller no one else is smart enough to do simple upgrades. Not a company I will spend my money with again. I have been ASE master certified for over 20 years and working on my own bikes for over 35 years. read more

I have been involved in cycling in one aspect or another for the last decade, from wrenching in shops, to racing at an amateur level, to commuting. Starting quite heavily with mountain bikes then taking a bit of break and now beginning to break into road cycling this year. Through the early and mid 2000 John Henry Bikes (JHB) used to be THE shop, huge stock, helpful and knowledgeable sales people and good service department. Now granted I have not walked though the doors in some years (out of city/country) but was certainly shocked upon my return... what happened? First re-impression left me cold. They still seem to have have good stock in a variety of price ranges, but what happened to the knowledgeable and helpful sales people?... nowhere to be found. Standing beside a group of multi-thousand-dollar road bikes for a few minutes, nothing. Making eye contact with a sales person... oh, hes gone to help the people just though the door. What I imagine to be the owner/manager walks past me two times barking stock numbers to another... nothing. Finally, I haul somebody down, oh its the Specialized bikes rep. After listening to the specialized company song for 5 min I was finally approached by a fairly helpful technician who did answer my questions. I left shortly after... i will not be back. read more

Spacious store with friendly helpful staff. Staff are a little young but they are trained relatively well. Great selection of Norco bikes with repair shop in back. They offer a lifetime adjustment of cables as tension if you purchase a bike through them. read more

Just bought a bike for my granddaughter at John Henry and the folks there couldn't have been more helpful. Very knowledgeable too, and not at all condescending as specialist stores can be sometimes. They offer lifetime brake and cable servicing on their bikes which is really great. read more

Bought a bike recently from there, and have been back for a few things, or a tune up. Impressed by the friendly and knowledgeable staff, ready to help out or just give advice. No attitude here. read more

Great selection, super knowledgeable staff, and they help you out no matter what you're looking for! We've been coming for years! I really like all of their different biking programs and clubs. John Henry Days in early May is always a ton of fun. read more

Don't buy your bike here. Very poor customer service if anything does not work, or the size is wrong. They fitted my granddaughter to a bike that was too big. It totally put her off biking. We had gone there specifically to have a knowledgeable bike fit. They were not willing to take the bike back and sell us a smaller one. They just wanted to sell us a smaller one at a slight discounted price. My suggestion- go somewhere else. read more

I have been shopping at the North Shore bike shops for a long time and can honestly say they are all decent. That said the feeling that I received recently from the Norco staff was great. It was a super busy day for them and they were extremely polite letting me know they would be with me as soon as possible. Once they got to me the very knowledgeable sales person was great. I was looking for something to ride on the Shore trails and had a good Idea but after going through slowly and methodically with me on the different FS models that Norco offered. I settled on a 2020 Sight. I could not be happier with the way that this bike has been. The after care that I have received from the staff when going to get service or other parts have been head and shoulders above what I expected. The sales guys are always happy to talk bikes and get my feedback on how I am handling my new ride. Their service team has been quick to assist me when I need it and helpful recommending things when they don't have it in the store. In the covid times we live in and the amount of bikes on the trails these guys have been doing an amazing job. Keep up the great work Norco. Visit this shop!!! read more

Hi there, just dropped in on JH bikes for a simple wheel-true, and the service department wait was at LEAST ELEVEN DAYS?!?!?! I guess it is great to see they are so busy, but I would think that some planning and prioritizing could go along way... example: a wheel true takes approx 15 minutes for someone good and that is different than a full system tune or brakes etc... you could also hire some more mechanics for the busy season, organize the work more efficiently, etc etc...... What is not ok is being told by a store I have purchased a few bikes from... "it'll be at least 11 days till we can help you, go ahead and go to someone else if you want a CRAP job done..." Nice job JH, guess my kids and anyone else I know will be going elsewhere for bikes and service from now on. read more

very poor service....actually no service. Went there last night and had decided on a hardtail; had about a grand to spend and just needed a little coaching to by a bike for this weekend with the kids. I'm there 20 mins before closing. 2 other customer in there. I engage and older bloke hastily asks what I'm looking for; I start telling him and he realizes this is more than one question I'm gonna ask. He says "I'm just doing something....." I say "OK, when you're done....". He goes to counter doesn't come back. Other girl working there...walking back and forth from floor to back mechanics area....seems busy despite my attempts to engage with no other customer awaiting her expertise...she briskly walks past....Hmmm...this place IS OPEN right? 1 other customer in this large store came in. They start chatting. I leave Going to Obsession or Steed after work for my bike. read more

I bought a bike here, initially I was happy with the service however my opinion has changed since. The bike I purchased went on sale and I returned to get a price match for it, the young man informed me that they didn't do price matches for sales, even though it says clearly on the bottom of the sales invoice that they do, after speaking with the manager this was corrected, however I don't believe I should have been put through that in the first place. Then within the first few months i returned because the rear wheel was shifting and I had been ensured there was warranty on the bike, however they tried to bill me for the service and then gave me the "usually this isn't covered" talk. I had to return again within a few weeks because the rear derailer would not shift into the highest gear and if it did after a short time the chain would come off and get jammed between the gear cassette and the frame, the issue persisted after service to the point where the chain actually broke. I took it back in, and again was informed this wasn't under warranty, eventually after an argument I begrudgingly agreed to just buy a new chain even though had the issue with the derailer been fixed it would have not happened. Further to this i was dismayed to overhear a conversation between the manager and a tech about a kids bike that a mother had asked to have fixed in a hurry because the child was part of their bike camp, the manager came up with the idea to charge them more to jump the line even though none of the current jobs being done by service were not time sensitive and other customers wouldn't be impacted, after hearing that other customers were also being ripped off my frustration level increased. The end result of my experience with John Henry was that they never solved my issue with the rear derailer and blamed me for it, so I have had to avoid using that gear when riding my bike since, until I can afford to pay a reputable shop to replace the component. I will no longer do business with this shop and I emphatically encourage others to visit a different shop until management at John Henry Bikes embraces the idea of standing behind the products they sell and drops the customer blaming ripoff tactics. read more

In my opinion this is one of the better bike shops in North Vancouver. Prices are reasonable, the staff are very knowledgeable, they have a lot of selection, and their bike mechanics know what they are doing. Really this is a very well rounded store. Definitely check out their sales as no one can beat their prices. read more

Took my commuting / touring Cannondale bike in 9 months ago for an overall tune-up. After a brief assessment, I was told that due to wear and tear on different part of the drive train, I was going to need a new everything, and that I was better off just buying a new bike. 9 months later I still commute with it 3 times a week and even did a week long touring trip with it up Vancouver Island this summer. My partner recently took the bike in after the front tire blew out. They replaced tube and tire, and told her about the laundry list of work that needed to be done. Overwhelmed, she stuck with just the tire, and brought home a 'ready-to-ride' bike. I commuted with the bike one time. The next time, my front tire blew out 2 minutes after leaving my house as I was bombing down Keith Rd (right above the bike shop). I was shocked as the bike had JUST been serviced, and that the blow-out happened in a very dangerous circumstance. So I took it back to the shop wanting some answers. It turns out the brake pad had been bumped up to rub on the tire, and had caused the blow-out, which was (apparently) the same issue that had caused the first blow-out. The service attendant took absolutely zero accountability for this, saying as my partner had wanted just the tire and declined the laundry list of services suggested, it is on us. So they gave her the bike back with the brakes still rubbing against the tire (which caused the first blow-out / neglecting to tell her that was the cause), and I almost killed myself the 2nd time riding it as a result. There probably aren't rules or codes the service worker is obliged to follow, but to me, if the repair-man is going to change things out on your bike, he should follow due diligence of: 1) identify why the flat happened 2) assess if that will happen again immediately and 3) not let someone ride away in a bike that is unsafe. Instead, there was no empathy whatsoever from the repair worker, who became defensive and unforgiving during our discourse. I would not recommend this shop to any of my friends, and will likely dissuade my friends from taking there service here. read more

The salesperson, Morgan, was wonderful to deal with. He was knowledgeable and professional, and gave great advice without pressuring for the sale. He stayed with us as we labored over our decision of which bike to buy for my son, and was nothing but patient and helpful. We had looked at many places before John Henry was recommended to us, and we were so impressed! Definitely the best service we received anywhere. read more

Phoned to book a demo mountain bike for the day, with the intention of maybe purchasing one. Asked over the phone if there was anything specific I needed to do/bring. Was told no, just come in on the day. Arrived in store to be informed I need to pay a deposit of the bikes full value ($4999) plus the $75 demo fee before I can take the bike out. (Even though the bike is well used and currently on sale for $3999) Needless to say I didn't have that kind of money instantly accessible. Surely there is some method of trialing a demo bike that doesn't require the customer to fork out the full value of the bike?? The main problem I have is that I was not informed about this policy when I phoned to book, also there is zero information pertaining to this on the website. This information would have been very helpful to me BEFORE arranging my whole day to go biking. Basic customer service failure. read more

Beware, this shop definitely tries to up sell you when you need service. Brought a bike in recently and they told me I needed all sorts of work that no other shop/mechanic has ever mentioned before. When I declined some of the services they suggested, they told me how all the work that they had just finished would now be useless without the "extras" they were selling. I found the one particular staff member I was dealing with to be very rude. I do not recommend this shop for service unless you know exactly what you need and how much it should cost. read more

Worst customer service I've ever experienced. I called in to ask a quick question regarding a part that I had just purchased, the sales rep passed the call onto the technician which was extremely rude. The tech spent 5 mins lecturing me on why they don't have time to help me over the phone and unless I am paying them for a service they don't give free advice over the phone. I was calling to see if the issue I was having warranted a drive to the shop. I understand that shops are busy in the summer but local bike shops always stress that they provide better service than online merchants etc etc I don't think this is true at John Henry Bikes in N.Vancouver. Instead of spending the time lecturing me he could have listened to my question and I would have been a satisfied customer, all of which would have taken half the time he took to berate me. I called another shop and they helped me in under 2 mins, I just had to turn the barrel adjuster. I would strongly advise against going to this second rate shop. read more

Called ahead with a rear derailleur issue. Was told to bring the bike by and a tech would have a quick look to assess possible issue. When I arrived with bike I was told by a different tech that I needed an app't and they were well booked three weeks in advance. They didn't have time to look at the bike, and to take it to "one of three other bike shops within spitting distance". I was quite taken aback, but proceeded to ride the bike to MEC (1/2 block away). The tech there put it up on the stand, found the issue, and fixed it while I waited (approx. 15 mins) even though their shop was busy and booked well in advance. Sad to say I will not be returning to John Henry. read more

Probably the best service I've ever had at a bike shop. I've bought three bikes there for the family and the best thing is that they service them forever - minor tuneups, adjustments. Yesterday brought in two bikes and they trued the wheels, fixed a broken brake, lubed what needed to be lubed, did a once-over on things that needed to be tightened, adjusted levers, NO EXTRA CHARGE. They guy even told me to bring them in more frequently if I wanted. Not only that they did it while I waited despite the shop stacked with bikes in for spring tune-ups. I was blown away. read more

my son's old school bike needed repair . a bolt was needed to re attach the pedal. I went in to see if they had a bolt I could purchase to fix it. not being mechanically inclined I had a few naive questions for the worker. he went to talk to the bike mechanic then came back with the appropriate bolt and told me it would work. when I asked him how much for the piece he told me no charge and told me good luck and told my son happy riding. what a wonderful gesture....when I do get serious about biking I will surely be a loyal customer. read more

I've been to most bike shops on the North Shore and they seem to be the most friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable about bikes and don't put any pressure on you to buy anything. They are also helpful at doing small adjustments on your bike when stopping by without an appointment. read more

I recently had two bad experiences at Norco John Henry Bikes. In March 2018 I saw a Norco Sight with a sale on the floor in medium and large. The medium was more significantly discounted. I needed the large and asked to have the same price as the medium. Owner/manager wasn't around, so I asked them to call me. Got a call an hour later that actually the medium AND large were both priced incorrectly, and that both were actually a couple hundred more expensive. I would have expected them to keep their word and step up to the error. Second experience, just today. I call to get a price check on a piece of gear for my bike. Tell me they're too busy and will call back soon. Didn't get a call for a few hours. I call back again. They tell me they'll call back in 10 min as they're busy. Again, no call for over an hour. When I did get the person on the phone, they were 'guesstimating' the price and blaming slow internet for not knowing the price. Overall I felt frustrated with the store and their phone skills. read more
