It's been more than at least 25 years since I shopped at a Cap's Bicycle shop. I am glad I went to Krusty's. It's been in Richmond for years and there is good reason. I ordered my bike in October and happily picked it up in early Feb. Mike the owner/manager was super responsive and communicative throughout the who process. I even go to meet their head mechanic Dennis on pick up day. The store seems to be well stocked and the prices are competitive. Can't wait for Mike to email me that my wife's bike has arrived. They had a cool bike rack that fits on road bikes - it's narrow (and aero) and it attached through the skewer so no worries if your bike does not have mounting points for attachment. read more

bought my 3rd bike from them. Service is great. I went in today with old bike for them to take off pannier, rear rack & front basket etc.. to be put on new bike, which I will pick up later. Old bike gear was stuck & ask if they could move the chain to make it easer to get home. Mike went out of his way to replace the derailleurs cable, so that I could get back home safely. I've never been disappointed by the service level at this store. While I don't shop here a lot, I have had repairs and servicing done and always been happy with the cost and quality. About a year ago I bought a bike pump here. It was fairly expensive and little used so I was surprised when it started leaking at the base area. I returned it to the store hoping the hose could be replaced or it could be repaired, or perhaps the unit would be replaced. They took one look at it and immediately agreed to replace it with a similar pump. No arguments, no hassles, just Great customer service! read more

Caps has been serving Richmondites and some Vancouverites for many years and there's good reason. This large shop and knowledgeable staff have helped fit me into an appropriate bike from my first tricycle to my trail bike. I'm sure I'm not the only one and I see it consistently topping best of lists for bike shops in the area. Service refused b/c bike was not purchased there. I was hoping to get a used fork installed as my old Pike U-Turn blew up (I don't have a headset tool). I arrived with used fork in hand and was first asked if I bought the bike there. Rhetorical question (maybe unintended), but they do not sell Blk Mrkt bikes (a niche dirt jumper). Of course I said "no" and was then declined service. Maybe he didn't know I would be needing other parts (new rotors and hardware)? Anyway, I left without words or arguments - I was too shocked really. I'm too lazy to write reviews, but this experience prompted me to do so. It's a shame there aren't other options nearby. I understand private businesses have a right to refuse service (as long as said refusal is not racially/medically/psychologically discriminatory), but I thought this refusal was poor play. We went to the shop to have one bike assembled and pick up some small parts for the other prior to a long tour. The owner greeted us, helped us with our route, gave us maps and generally made us feel at home. The mechanic was able to put the bike together in an hour. Krusty's is very apt for this place. I went in with a couple questions and there were 3 staff that I saw. An Asian man who I did not speak to, and then the fellow in the photos with wavy hair and glasses. He did that annoying thing where he is actually still helping someone else, then talks briefly to me, but when I go to respond, he turns his attention back to customer #1 and then turns to respond back to me with an air of indifference. Hey man, I was happy to wait til you finished with that guy, you could've just nicely said "I'll be right with you!" I said what I suspected the problem was, and what I suspected needed to be done (to give him an idea of whether I thought it would take long) and he semi rolled his eyes and said everyone thinks it's a quick fix or something to that effect. Thankfully he got another staffer to take a look; he wasn't interested in the least anyway. This 3rd staffer, a similar age to the jerk guy, but sans glasses, was nice. He smiled (!) was friendly (!) and offered an explanation and a possible timeline (!) Ultimately I decided to just put off the repair for now, and thanked him for his time. He was still nice, and said to come back if I changed my mind. Sadly for him, I wouldn't anyway bc I think the first guy with the glasses is the owner. He needs to figure out customer service; he gives off the most negative, customers-are-a-pain vibe ever. On another note, this is of course happening during a difficult time, with Covid 19 on all our minds. I was respectful of physical distance, and I do think it's great that Cap's is open to help folks who want to fix their bike and get outdoors while we are still allowed to. However, the signage on the doors was the most cold, negative leaning message I've yet seen, in this time of all open businesses reminding customers of the new rules we must all abide by. The sign on the door said (this is almost word for word): "Know what you are looking for when you come in. Pay for your item, then vacate." (that second sentence is as it appeared on the note) Honestly, there are a hundred nicer, more respectful ways to say what you are trying to say. Never in the last few weeks have I seen a more cold, snide approach to communicating a physical distance reminder to customers. I feel bad for the nice guy who I spoke to, bc he has to work for such a negative boss. Enjoy your work, be grateful for customers, or else recognise you hate your life now and change it. Yeesh. I can't recommend this place enough! They have great inventory. The staff are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. All the times that we frequented the store, they have never pushed anything on us or tried to make us buy something we didn't need. Recently someone rear-ended our car with our bikes attached on the hitch. ICBC per usual made us jump through hoops. It wasn't enough that we took the bikes in or that the photos proved that they are damaged beyond repair; they wanted letters from bike repair shops that our mangled up bikes were indeed unfixable. Other repair shops (I won't name names) wanted to charge us $35 per letter but the staff at Cap's took care of it free of charge. He even attached his business card on the letter in case ICBC gave us any more grief. I will not be going anywhere else for our family's bike needs!! read more

I have shopped at Caps since the mid 70's (when they were on Steveston highway), and have always been very impressed by the level of service and friendliness. Can't recommend these guys enough! I came here with my Trek 5200 and needed some new tires and I was in and out in 10 minutes. The staff here is nice (kind of odd and somewhat not personable, but I can tell they are kind people). They get things done. It is nice to have a bicycle shop that that knows what they are doing and can get it done quickly. It makes cycling so much easier. Recently brought in a road bike for regular Tune-Up service, $50 + taxes. For this standard price that many bike shops charge, I was surprised that when I picked up my bike, they didn't even inflate my tires. When a bike is tuned, it should be fully serviceable for the customer to ride on the road right away. I shouldn't have to ask to get my tires inflated?! They also will not clean your frame, chain, or cog...I question if my components were even lubed. Even the little things like replacing a missing valve cap wasn't done. Just poor service or no passion in their work. I must say that the manager of this store was very nice, and attentive to the customer, but something needs to be done about the mechanic. I might be back for parts/goods, but definitely not to service my bike!!! read more

Caps is one of the few constants in Richmond. I remember coming into this store as kid to look at bikes when they were down in Steveston! I recently started cycling again and Mike was kind enough to help me out choose an appropriate bike for my needs. They're not going to push a bike on you just to make a sale. I knew very little about bikes when I looking to buy. Mike walked me through the different options and the difference in components for each bike. Very happy with my purchase. My derailleur cable came off completely while I was on the road at Iona Beach and I gave them a call if they could look at it. It was going to be a simple cable replacement. They said it was OK. Since cabs didn't want to come to Iona, I had to talk all the way to the shop in cycling shoes. I arrived there at 4:10 and the service guy said even if they started right away, it would take 2 hours to change a cable (!) and that they were closing at 5. I said it normally takes 15 minutes everywhere else and I walked all the way from Iona because they confirmed the work could be done. 2 hours was also a made-up time and they just wanted to skip the work and go home. Even though I said this was an emergency and that I could pay double/triple the replacement cost, didn't make any difference. This was the first time I really needed help but was quite disappointing. I had to call a cab and have it take me home.. We're trying to support local bike shops; I bought 3 bikes from them previously but didn't see any loyalty at the time I really needed... Last year I purchased my TREK SILQUE bike from Caps Cycle. 'Mike' fit me for my bike and after delivery (a couple of weeks later) I am currently an active biker and love it! I return to the shop regularly for items I need whether for myself or my bike and the service I receive from the staff is always very knowledgeable and friendly. Just once I walked in when it was very busy (the start of biking season) and I left the store to return at later day...I feel it is worth going back to Caps for their service and individual attention. Yesterday, I took my bike in with a flat tire. Barry, suggested I upgrade both tires for a better ride and after my session this morning I am very happy he made the suggestion. He also has performed 2 "Barrification" tune-ups and my bike looks and rides like SILQUE. I have purchased 2 bikes from Bill and Mike (owners) over the years. I like this owner-managed shop and come here for all my bike repair/maintenance needs, they offer good honest service. The only negative feedback I have is that I prefer if possible, to not deal with the staff - I would rather deal with one of the two owners. For example, just last week, I took my bike in for a tune-up and some small repairs. I picked up the bike, Matt (the staff) dealt with me, said he did not know about any work on my bike, but when back to the shop and retrieved it. I was charged a total of $90, for the 'tune-up' plus other costs. When I asked what was done to my bike as part of the tune-up, Matt was unable to tell me. When I probed with some more specific questions, he indicated two things were probably done on my bike as a "favour". He had no idea what was done to my bike, I paid him $90, and he was taking some wild guesses as to what was done as a "favour'. No favours were done, I paid $90 and I got service, period. I did not engage in further conversation with Matt. I think the staff could use some more customer service training from the owners, but overall am happy with this shop. A check-list of what a tune-up involves (and levels of tune-up) like some other bike stores have would be helpful for this shop to consider. read more

Super frustrating experience. Walked in wanting to purchase a specific bike. There were 2 people working the floor and hardly anyone in the shop, but none of the male staff even looked at me or acknowledge that they would be with me when they weren't busy helping others. I waited by the bike I wanted to purchase and tried to make eye contact with staff but they completely ignored me (I felt like it was because I was a woman). Standing next to me was a male customer who was being helped by staff member #1. When the staff member left to get something in the back, staff member #2 came to help the same customer. When staff member #2 turned to leave and walk past me, I finally said, "Excuse me. When you're not busy, would it be possible to get someone to help me out with a bike? I have some questions." He rudely said to me, "Uhh...I'm with a customer right now." I said, "Yes, I can see that, but I would like someone to know that I'm waiting for help." He then said he would try to find somebody, and then walked off. The customer that was being helped shook his head and commented that he honestly did not even know why there were two people helping him all of a sudden and that he was sorry. I told him that he had nothing to be sorry about. I kept the comment to myself, but I knew that he was being helped because he was male and looked wealthy. I wasn't being helped because what does a woman know about bikes? Too bad for them, they lost a sale because I was looking to buy a Trek bike myself that day and decided to give my money to another company. Someone did finally come to help me, but the guy was so focused on trying to up-sell me on a higher model that I had expressed wasn't what I needed that I couldn't wait to get out of there. He also tried to hide the fact that the higher model also had some less quality components than the model below and I completely lost respect for them at that point. They don't care about informing the customer and meeting your needs. They only care about making the biggest sale. This is my second bad experience here. Not going back! read more
