The ride around Lasqueti is very pleasant with a couple of beaches to stop at and relatively car free hilly dirt roads . There is a hotel /pub at fakes bay where the ferry lands You need a mountain bike or a hybrid or gravel bike with 32 mm plus tires . Suspension is useful for the sweeping corners that are gravel covered with washboard in some spots. I called Greg at Oceanside outfitters about one minute after closing to try and get a bike for the 9:45 ferry the next day. Greg kindly offered to open the store at 8:30 the next morning and I made the ferry with no problem. He also let me drop the bike off after shop closing time , at his beach rental spot. The store is more of a "wide open spaces" layout and has began selling brands that are sporty and functional. Northface is still way too expensive here and the Columbia wear needs some variety. There was some interesting shirts and jackets from Puma but a lacking Nike inventory. Service was virtually non-existent - most of the employees were huddled up and giggling while people aimlessly roamed the store. One thing I do appreciate about Impulse is they do repairs for snowboarding equipment and they have a machine in the back for restringing tennis rackets. The fees / repair prices on their charge don't seem bad. If I never end up buying anything form here (which is likely), I at least have a place to to fix my gear.

Their prices are lower than most souvenir shops and the couple who manages the store are locals who are friendly and very helpful. He puffed his chest out and said that his customers love it and he wanted to support a Canadian radio station. I told him that people will hate it, but they won't say anything to let him know, and as long as he continues to blare a radio station overhead, I won't set foot back here. This store is a life saver!…read more We are contractors and had a job on Orcas Island. We had never been to Orcas before and were unfamiliar with the area. Before we set out for the island, I looked up local hardware stores (just in case). I found Island Hardware & Supply, called them to make sure they would have what we MIGHT need, hopped in the truck and got on the ferry. OF COURSE it turned out that we DID need some items, so we set off for the Hardware store. We got lost and ended up at the little hardware store in East Sound - we thought we were at the right store, but they didn't have any of the supplies we needed. We were pretty confused until I found out from a local resident that the little hardware store in East Sound is on North Beach Road, and the big hardware store (Island Hardware) is on West Beach Road. So we hopped back in the truck again, and set out to find Island Hardware. (yes, we got losat again...but eventually figured it out) We were so relieved when we located the store and were able to purchase the supplies we needed, because we were thinking that we would have to get on the ferry and drive to the home depot in Mt Vernon (that would have taken forever). Island Hardware had all the stuff we wanted, lumber, tools, big bolts, lag screws, plumbing supplies etc. They even have a couple of little gas pumps which was handy for us. We had the occassion to go back up to Orcas for round two of the job which was exterior painting. The paint we purchased needed to be re-tinted at the last minute. We remembered that Island Hardware had a paint department and took the buckets of paint to them with our fingers crossed. Even though we didn't buy the paint from them, they happily re-tinted it for us...I thought that was pretty generous and excellent customer service!
