This is an older bakery. They don't have a huge variety of baked goods but they do have a cooked food section in the back. I love how they have rugelachs in many flavors and biscottis as well. I'm unsure if the croissants and butter cookies are made on premises. The croissants were good but tasted generic. The rugelachs tasted a bit old the each time I had it. I thought it was a bad batch but it seems to be that way every time I get them. The last time I got them they were hard and difficult to bite into and tasted stale. They were pretty expensive too. I love that Vito's is a short 10 minute walk away. A couple of my favorites are the corn muffins and apple strudel. Quick tip, you can find the apple strudel in the refrigerator directly across from the display case. I am super disappointed after just trying a few items from this bakery. I can be slightly biased since I worked at a great one in Bensonhurst (Angelo's) when I was in HS, but this stuff was not good. The lobster tail was definitely old and the cream tasted like some type of industrial cleaning agent! I thought maybe it was my taste buds after giving birth not too long ago, but I know it wasn't our stuff because we use fragrance free soaps. I was also unimpressed as the cream is supposed to be french cream and it was this gross whipped cream. Then my husband tried the strawberry shortcake. The cake was definitely stale and when I asked him about the cream, he said the same thing about it tasting like some kind of soap or chemical! I am glad it seems like they clean their equipment, but grossed out that it's not well rinsed. That or they use some gross chemical crap to make their cream! The seven layer (rainbow) cookies are $18.50/lb and were fine I guess. Nothing special, but also just small things like not cutting off the edges. That part was a bit gross and crunchy and just doesn't present well. On top of that it was $13.50 for the lobster tail, strawberry shortcake and 3 pieces of seven layer cookies - totally not worth it for us throwing away essentially the whole lobster tail and half the cake. I miss my old bakery and if they were still open, that would be the only place I'd go. I came strictly for the lard bread and chose this spot based solely because it was close to where I was staying. This is not like the lard bread I've had before. The woman said they only had the small size and I bought the last 3 because I promised to bring it home from my vacation. I'm glad they only had small because it was a waste of money. Vito Bakery Inc is a few things: a bakery, a deli, and a mini supermarket. The food is excellent. It may be a bit pricy, but the food is delicious. What I really appreciate is that if you are in the mood for cake, you don't have to buy the whole thing. You can walk out with a slice or two. The heroes are also huge and can be stretched to two meals. The problem is the service. The bakery itself is not very big. Instead of one person at the deli counter and other staff at the register, the employees ran back and forth while the line got longer. From the moment I walked into this small, local bakery on Avenue U, I basically wanted to buy and eat EVERYTHING like the cookie monster. The bakery was decked wall to wall with a massive selection of cookies and pastries. Now I know what pastry heaven is probably like. In addition, there were numerous cakes in the refrigerators against the wall, most notably strawberry cheesecakes and strawberry shortcakes (vanilla and chocolate). I came in here on a weekday to look for a cake for a birthday, specifically a strawberry shortcake. There are plenty of bakeries, Chinese and Italian, in the area, but I didn't need anything fancy. I just needed something that looked delicious, well-made and fresh. The main reason I chose them was due to the number of photos they had on their Yelp page. From looking at their Yelp photos, I knew they had a decent selection to choose from, so I called in the day before to see what their stock was like and the woman was very friendly and helpful, letting me know that they always had strawberry shortcake on hand throughout the day, so that was good to know and was convincing enough for me to swing by. On the day that I visited to purchase the strawberry shortcake, I couldn't have had a better experience here. In the 10 minutes that I spent inside, I asked the woman behind the counter numerous questions about their cakes, regarding how big they were (6 inches), how many serving it contained (about 8) and, most importantly, the price ($16 for the whole shortcake). She answered every single question like a champ and I made my purchase immediately. On top of it, she asked if I needed any writing on the cake, so I wrote down what I needed written and it came out perfectly. Prior to my departure, we had a brief conversation about the other cakes they had on display and she couldn't have been any friendlier. As for the strawberry shortcake, it was a little on the sweet side for my family, but I loved it. It was the type of strawberry shortcake that was made with strawberry jam filling in between cake layers. Although the best strawberry shortcakes tend to have actual strawberries and cream within the layers, I didn't actually mind the jam at all. The cake was a bit heavy on the cream, but it was all very tasty when eaten together. I will definitely come back to try their other pastries and cookies ... and maybe even another cake. read more

My experience with Vito's bakery is very disappointing! $2 for one tiny cannoli. I bought 2 cannolis which were very hard and didn't taste good at all. Apple strudel was horrible as well, soggy and stale. So I was ripped off and received horrible stale pastries which ended up in the garbage. By the way their cold cuts section is awful as well. Those sandwiches are beyond cheap! I won't be back and I don't recommend this place to anyone! They don't deserve even one star. This place SERIOUSLY SUCKS! This place used to be a lot better years ago and much more affordable, perhaps it's been under new management because the customer service that used to be top notch have been lacking and sometimes rude. Seems people now have to wait a while for service even when there's like one or two people in front of them and it seems every few times I've been here a customer is getting scolded at by the same lady who is I'm guessing the manager? There used to be a giant chart of cake sizes, servings, and prices displayed in front, but that's been taken down. Prices have increased and the cake quality seems to have changed, won't say the taste is bad, but it's different than what it is used to be. I would say some cakes have become a bit too sweet. We also used to pay about $30-35 for a 9 or 10 inch cake with flower decorations, but the price seems to have jumped to $40-45. Prices used to be reasonable when you wanted to swap out certain ingredients like which type of cream you wanted, but it's like they add another $5 just for that now. The pastries are still good, like the rainbow cake and cannolis, etc. , but the cake prices are too much. read more

I stop here occasionally for their butter cookies and from time to time I have tried their other products. Everything is delicious! I once sent my nephew to pick up a order of cookies and of course he went to the wrong store. I noticed immediately because the taste of their products are always so fresh and delicious. I love this Italian bakery in the heart of a mini Chinatown. The place itself is very clean and the service is very fast. The prices are pretty good as well but that's not why I love this place. I love it because of all the selection they have to offer! Their French and Italian bread is baked fresh and they have mini whole wheat Italian bread! It's great! They also have cream puffs stacked together and chocolate covered cream puffs. There's also a lot of cakes and just a whole ton of selection- I wish I could eat it all!!! Small hidden gem on avenue U. I randomly stumbled upon this bakery when I needed a last minute birthday cake. We got the strawberry cheesecake and wow was it good! The second time I returned I got the chocolate layer cake and was less impressed because I only like a certain type of chocolate cake. However, it only cost about $12-$15 for the big cake so no complaints here! I will be stopping by for pick me ups in the near future to try all the other goodies, and they have a lot! Their bread is delicious, I'd give it a 4. Their pastries are decent. I'd give them a 3. Cannolis are freshly filled daily. Vito's is also one of very, very few Italian bakeries in the neighborhood. Their cheesecake, however, isn't the greatest, and their Italian cookies are "just ok". Their tricolor cookies, or rainbow cookies, definitely leave something to be desired. My biggest problem with Vito's, and why I wouldn't be able to give them anything higher than an overall 2.5 stars, is that I've seen Beatrice, the owner, and her daughter, treat their employees incredibly poorly, on more than one occasion. I also don't like how much bread they throw away on a daily basis - sometimes as much as 20 loaves. Why not donate it to City Harvest? If it weren't for these 2 huge qualms, I'd give Vito's a 3.5 based on bread, cookies, and pastries, but considering how they treat employees, and how much food they waste, I'm gonna stick with a 2.5. My experience was different than my husband's from a few weeks ago. He said he got a rather rude counter clerk and he refused to go inside with me but told me to be ware of the rude woman. The staff was friendly despite it being so busy. I ordered 1lb of cookies for us and 2lbs for my elderly Italian neighbor who's adorably friendly and sweet. She had family over so I wanted there to be enough for a few of them. I was given my order ASAP and it was $30 for everything including the smiles from all the workers. They wrapped the neighbor's cookies in a pretty cellophane package with ribbons and Easter eggs.
