I love the Virginia Diner and I always stop here when I pass by Wakefield, VA! Not only do they serve good country style cooking in their spacious dining room, but the peanut store is off the chain! There are so many varieties of peanuts, it'll drive you nuts... I purchased 6 cans on my recent trip! The buttered toasted, cranberry nut mix and the can-do button mix are some of my favs, but nothing can compare to the original can of salty peanuts! I love their motto "a legend in a nutshell since 1929"! What can be a more perfect Virginia grown gift than a can of nutty goodness!? I always grab a couple of extra cans for hostess gifts! There's also a sale room, so check it out! All the food is delicious! I've eaten good ole down home country breakfasts here dozens of times! All I can say is... try the Virginia Country Ham Biscuits! This is my 2nd time going and both time I did the Sunday buffet. And both times it sucked! In the middle of nowhere, for me on my way back to the 757, it's a stop where there's not a lot of food choices so this place gets pretty busy fast. When you walk in, there's a little selection of all types of peanuts for purchase. Cool thing it has few college brand canisters from the area in Virginia but not my alma mater (ODU) But Duke and William and Mary made the list. For the buffet selection, there's fried chicken, fried fish, ham, cabbage, mac n cheese, string beans, smashed potatoes and more. It's your typical southern food but bland. Desserts taste store bought so that can be easily skipped. The staff is unwelcoming and the wait can be long. Glad we made it in before the rush! read more

For as much as this place was hyped up, I was really expecting more. The waitstaff was lovely and super friendly, but that was the extend of my appreciation for this place. They have a large dining room, so we were seated quickly, but it took a while for the server to come over and take our order. After that, it took a while to get our food, and when we did get it, it was cold. The fries tasted super soggy, old, and flavorless, and the burger was fine, but also not warm and nothing to write home about. The best part was the pie, which was rather small. It wasn't expensive, but it was more expensive than it was worth. They also have a store in the front where they sell confections, which might have been nice, but we didn't feel like spending more. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you're just coming for the pie, to be honest. read more

Staff is extremely rude. Their phones were more important than the customers. We had a couple people in our group that wanted their country ham. The Food is overrated. I don't know what Mac and cheese they gave Diner, Drive-In and Dives but the noodles were overcooked and it just tasted like flour. My 6 year old niece was starving so we got her the Mac and cheese and then left. We found Pinos # 2 down the street. The staff at Pinos was so nice and the pizza was yummy!!! Enjoyed this place. Wanting to go here for a long time, since I heard it was on the Guy Fieri's drive inns and dine show. At first my wife and I was not impressed with the set up as it had a buffet line. Anyhow we push through our prejudgment and sat in to dine. For appetizers we got the hush puppies and the fried green tomatoes. Both were ok. I'm from the south so this is what I grew up eating, so I might be harsh on this evaluation. Then we were recommended to get southern fried chicken and fried catfish; we got both, and was blown away. Very good dish. Virginia Diner was a treat! A beautiful drive in the countryside leads you to a charming old restaurant and shop. We arrived on a Sunday evening where they had a buffet plus regular menu offerings. We decided to order from both too get a full taste of traditional dishes in the area. We ordered Brunswick stew, Virginia ham and biscuits, spoon bread, peanut pie, and the buffet which included: salad, beets, green beans, succotash, potatoes, sweet potato fries, fried catfish, fried chicken, baked chicken, bbq pork ribs, pork chops, ham, peach cobbler, banana pudding, cake, and probably more I can't remember! They bring fresh baked rolls to your table, which they told me they make there. Some of the dishes were great and some were just okay, but the overall experience was really good and the service was wonderful. Janine was a delight as well as the hostess (didn't catch her name). I loved: the rolls, fried catfish, and the banana pudding. The peanut pie was good, but with a few tweaks (as a pastry chef by trade) it could be amazing. It had a little too much peanut and not enough of the filling. It was like eating melted peanut brittle in a crust with ice cream. It was really unique and wonderful to try! read more

Having visited the Virginia Diner since 1961, I must say that I think their time has come. The food has gone off the rails poorly. The canned peanuts are good but it's so terribly expensive. Does it really cost that to can a can of peanuts? I don't know. As we always do, we stopped on our way north a week ago and on our way south today. On our way north I order to have biscuits and got a small can of peanuts and it was just under $30. I didn't check my receipt which is my bad , but at $3.50 a ham biscuit and $10 a can of peanuts not sure how it came up to $30. The sesame sticks in the can of peanuts were mealy. So the can ended up going in the trash as we were in PA when I opened them. On the way back I ordered liver n onions (with onion rings, spoon-bread and hush puppies). The liver was burnt and tough, there were no onion rings, and the spoon-bread and the hush puppies were room temperature. The "onions" as part of the liver and onions consisted of three rings of onion with one being the skin! I returned my meal which was not received well by staff. Tsk tsk. As it's getting worse and worse, we won't be returning, after 62 years. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for YEARS after seeing an old DDD episode that featured them. So when I saw a sign for the diner a few miles away while I was traveling down to OBX last weekend we stopped. Twice actually. The first trip my husband and I got the ham sliders. OMG dude. I was blown away. We actually saved one of the little guy's to take to share at the house we stayed in. It lasted about two seconds. haha The second time, we stopped on the way home and got some ham to go, and they had the buffet open, so we had to try it. I have no regrets. The food was all fantastic. The beets, the greens, the green beans, the corn dog poppers, the cauliflower, the fried chicken, and of course that wonderful smoky salty ham. Stopped by there yesterday for lunch. I ordered their Thursday lunch special open face turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and green beens. The turkey was shredded turkey that had been grilled on a piece of toast not plain white bread that you fine other places. What a wonderful Christmas lunch we enjoyed. Sister In Love and Brother made arrangements with Chris Harsch, the General Manager, for a wonderful lunch gathering for Christmas. Food was excellent, server Patricia was such a blessing. We are from Richmond and Chesapeak, Va. Virginia Diner is the halfway point for us. There were six of us. Such wonderful accommodations and food as good as you can get. This business will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in a few years. We are very blessed to have eaten here many times. Stopped by Virginia Diner on the way to the beach since I recognized the name. The buffet was not available on that weekday afternoon so I ordered the catfish with two sides. The waitress was efficient but when I asked for recommendations she said that she doesn't really eat anything in the restaurant. The catfish was good but the sides were unremarkable. I am writing an update to my review of the Virginia Diner peanuts. The business responded to my original review and assured me the only use super XL Virginia peanuts and asked me to contact them at an internet address. Well the address does not work so instead of trying to provide them addition information by personal contact I guess I have to return to the public alternative. I had given 4 large cans to friends in France. When the Va Diner assured me the only use super xl Va peanuts I wrote my friends and asked for a picture with something to show scale. I guess they did not understand because it appears they just tried to show some of the different sizes in the can. I can assure you the majority of the peanuts were the size of the smaller nut in the picture and they are not super xl Va nuts. read more

We were headed back home after a quick Labor day weekend getaway and we kept seeing signs for this place, so we decided to stop. It's a restaurant and small store but this review is just for the store section. I guess this place is famous for their peanuts because that's what they mainly sold. They had a lot of different flavored peanuts, cashews, and chocolate. They also sell cookies and cinnamon rolls. I got a container of honey roasted cashews, an oatmeal cookie, and a cinnamon roll. Everything was so good but my favorite was the cinnamon roll. I definitely recommend this place as a pit stop to stretch your legs and get some treats. read more

Wakefield, VA--Road Trip #7 To those of you who are loyal readers, this is the last installment of my road trip to Richmond. If you are new, welcome! After I finished visiting at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, I headed back home to Suffolk, but I had one more stop before my journey was complete. I needed to get my grub on so I set my sights on Virginia Diner (VD). I had actually been there a few times before, but that was my pre-Yelp days. I wanted to try their fried chicken, and write a review along with pictures, of course. VD has been serving the community of Wakefield for over 85 years. Their home-style Southern dishes and a family, casual atmosphere is what regulars and visitors flock here for. They also sell items in the store (and online at www.vadiner.com) and VD is proudly called "The Peanut Capital of the World." Also, VD was on the show "Diners, Drives-Ins, and Dives" back in 2008 (season 3--episode 3). Since it was a weekday, I had no problem getting a table. The interior is your typical diner: kind of sad with red and white checkered tablecloths, some pictures on the walls, and hardly any color throughout. My waitress was friendly and did a great job taking care of my needs. I ordered the ¼ Fried Chicken with two sides (candied yams and collards) and biscuits for $9.59. I don't eat a lot of fried chicken, but I thought it was quite tasty. The skin was crispy and flavorful, and the meat was nice and moist, which is most important to me. I'd had their candied yams before and I love them. Delicious! The collards was new for me to try, and I thought it was well made. The greens still had a bit of bite to them, and I could both taste and see the ham hocks in the collards. VD's biscuits are just okay when we're talking about a Southern diner; they really need to step it up in that regard. Overall, I was satisfied with my meal especially with the value. I wouldn't come out of my way to visit this place, but if you need a meal on the road, it's a good option. Make sure you save room for their World Famous Peanut Pie--I was full that day, but I did try it once before. Or, get a whole pie to go! read more

Good Ole Southern! This place has been around for years. Located on US 460 in Wakefield Virginia right in the middle of peanut country. People come from miles to try this food. The collard greens and cornbread is to die for and the peach cobbler is of its own. Very busy on the weekends so you can expect waits up to 45 minutes. If you do come, do so doing off-periods of the day like between lunch and dinner, its daily slow then. On this particular day grill orders were a 45 minute wait so I highly recommend the buffet. Let me start by saying my review is strictly on the buffet. We are not buffet eaters by any means but were told to give it a try. I will admit the food selection was a little limited in my opinion. However, the food that was on the buffet at the time of our visit was good. Baked Chicken, Fried Catfish, Liver, Fried Okra, Carrot Soufflé which I didn't know what I was eating at first, Baked Flounder, and Green Beans. They also had fried Corn on the Cob which probably would have be great fresh out of the grease but sitting on a buffet, YUCK. The banana pudding looked watered down.
