I had heard about this place from a lot of people and wanted to give it a try. So I could try more things out I chose to get the buffet so I know most the dishes were not prepped just fresh so take that into consideration. They had lettuce salad w/ topping, a vinegar noodle salad, banana pudding, bread pudding, peach cobbler, carrot soufflé, chicken and dumplings, Turkey breast sliced, ham, cheesy potato/broccoli casserole, deviled eggs, fried chicken, fried fish, meatballs- think that's it. My favorite - chicken and dumplings hands down was delicious. The dumplings were more like wide flat noodles which I'd never had before - but it was still very tasty. All the desserts were tasty nothing was spectacular. And I enjoyed the deviled eggs a lot. The vinegar noodle salad I did not care for at all. Fried chicken was quite dry. Turkey, meatballs, casserole thing were all fine but fairly mediocre. The service was excellent though! And staff was exceptionally friendly. You can tell this once was a great good ole southern eatery. Now just another dinner. Food was ok not great not crappy just ok. Service was terrible I do mean terrible. Waiter greeter never brought me my soda or coffee until after they brought me my lunch. Needless to say no tip for no service. The little overpriced store they have inside is exactly that overpriced. For what you can get at the grocery store for a quarter of the price is exactly the same thing. So sad to see probably what started by "mom & pop" is either been sold or passed down. Thankfully the road took me here yet again, this is just so amazing, words can barely describe it, but view the pictures, it's worth a thousand amazing uplifting words. Just thinking about the food at Virginia Diner has me salivating , chicken and onion rings were perfectly crunchy and very tasty and the mushroom and Swiss burger was super flavorful and juicy. Must first say I have bought nuts for many years ( hundreds of dollars worth ) each year. Ordered on Dec.2 this year - they debited my Visa card that day - I ask for Dec.9 ship date. Just like another post I read here, my order was put in limbo. I phoned and got put on permanent hold. Then left name and number for a call back which never came. 11/18/2024 approximately 6pm I did an "online" order (1st time) for 3 entrees and 3 desserts. Also added a 20% tip When I arrived at the scheduled pickup time only the 3 entrees with bagged and handed to me. The Diner's ticket on the food showed only the 3 entrees and she stated that's all they saw.. I told the lady that the order also had 3 desserts and showed them my computer receipt. I walked in and the staff were very welcoming and very nice. The bathrooms were very clean and the overall atmosphere was very pleasant. We were sat down immediately, even though it was crowded, and our waitress was very sweet. Once the food got here, I just had to take pictures because it looked like it was straight out of a movie. The outside of the restaurant does not look too appealing, but once you step foot inside it looks completely different. The inside looks very well-kept which is a plus for a restaurant. This five stars for the waitress! 3 stars for the food! We did the buffet for25! I recommend order from the menu! The rolls , ham , collard , carrot casserole and chicken livers 5 stars ! The fried chicken and cat fish was 3 stars! This place was the right lace to visit with my siblings for my 60 th birthday! But what made this meal so great was the trash talking and brash waitress! She fit in so well with our group! She told us that she would come back and ask if we needed anything! The Virginia Diner is a pretty well-known place to eat in this area. Thus, it was in the perfect location to meet friends we hadn't seen in a while. The store front is full of peanuts. They're canned and flavored in numerous different ways. We were a little surprised there weren't more souvenir type items to buy as gifts for others but peanuts are popular around here. There were 5 of us meeting for lunch. Three ordered the hot roast beef sandwich. Kudos for the roast but the brown gravy was a little too salty and wasn't the best. Potatoes were okay but not real hot. Collard greens were delicious. The breaded chicken was good but the white gravy was overly thick I thought. Of course, all of these reviews are based on personal opinions. We were surprised to see fried green tomatoes and had to order them. Virginia Diner was the highlight of our mini work road trip from Richmond, VA to Chesapeake, VA. It was recommended to us by locals and if you're having second thoughts like one of my coworkers, the billboards along the way will persuade you otherwise. The banana pudding and fried chicken were excellent, but I must say the most memorable item was the carrot soufflé. While driving home for the weekend (from Virginia Beach to Roanoke) I stopped in here for lunch on Friday last week during their buffet. As it was lunch time there were not many tables (maybe 10 total) and there was no wait. I browsed the buffet but decided it was not for me and chose to review the menu. I decided to go with something simple and had the combo plate of a bowl of brunswick stew and two ham biscuits with a side of black-eyed peas and stewed tomatoes. The ham biscuits were moist, fresh and delicious and piled high with ham and the stew was also very good. I did not regret my choice one bit. The black-eyed peas and stewed tomatoes were also good but be warned, their stewed tomatoes are much sweeter than others I've had in the past. So be prepared. For dessert I chose to try the "famous" peanut pie they apparently are known for. Other readers have said it tastes like a pie versos of a Payday bar and that is probably true. I was not impressed with the flavor, taste or texture of the pie and would not choose it again. It was very very dry and I did not finish more than 1/4th of it. I remember dining here as a young child and thinking it was much nicer. It's simple inside, appears a bit rundown, and home-y. We were driving past this diner this morning to get to Suffolk and I am thankful that we decided to stop by here! I was surprised by the cozy and modern interior and the restaurant had a great atmosphere! When you arrive, we had the choice between eating from the buffet or picking something off the menu. I ordered pancakes and these were by far the best I have had from a diner. There were big, soft, and cooked perfectly! The sausage and eggs were great as well. I am very disappointed in this company. It took 18 days to get the item i placed. They took 7 additional days to ship my product and didn't communicate anything to me. So from the day I ordered it to ship date was 10 days. They didn't ship it until I called and shipped it that day. Then it took 8 days to get to me. This was a Christmas present. Also their customer services sucks. They are late in responding and not truthful and take things personal. Not a good way to run a business. Never let me know what happened. On a road trip with my dad we dropped in this famous place. Did not eat in the diner but would love to next time passing through. Upon entering you'll find a country store with some great tasting Virginia peanuts of many flavors including Old Bay seasoned peanuts! For the most part, there was much Southern Hospitality, people inviting you in, holding doors Etc. Except for a lady in front of us in line to pay who was deciding to be a social distance cop and complaining about it being cramped and was even rude to dad for being too close to her in line(we both rolled our eyes). As usual, I was pulled off the road by a sign... This one said " as seen on diners drive ins and dives". I am a fan of the show so I though what the hell, I'm going in. I went HAM- no really... I went ham and I also got a quarter bird of their fried chicken. While 8 wait for my food, I will mention a couple things . This place is definitely the only thing poppin off in this sleepy little town. The restaurant is well spaced out and clean and the service staff is very attentive. The decor reminds me of a Boston Market - country chic- with the loud country music kickin in the background, there is no doubt you are in the south. I ordered the Denver Club which is supposed to be huge and some fried chicken with collards and onion rings. I wanted to sample what they are famous for. It didn't make sense that they would have enough notariety for the Tv show but such poor Yelp ratings... So the fried chicken was not really crispy but the flavors were on point . The collards were great but had a little hint of sweetness to it, which was weird for collards but not bad, kinda awesome actually. The real winner was the onion rings which were a "side". Those things were hand battered and so good - so good. The club was delicious and mad the old school way with no shortcuts. I would love to check this place put for breakfast some time. Bottoms line guys- this place was a great value - I got out with two full meals and a drink under 30 bucks and the food - while not SUPER Awesome- was pretty damn good. I think some of the negative reviews are because the joint falls short of the hype from the sign. We have been here a couple times before and truly were looking forward to our stop on the way to the beach. Unfortunately our experience did not go well. We spent over 2 hours between ordering, waiting, waiting, and waiting and then finally eating. The food itself was just ok. The only thing I can recommend is the ham biscuits which were delicious. After all of the hype from advertising and flashy billboards posted up every mile, I couldn't help but feel extremely disappointed. This is nothing short of a great value version of Cracker Barrel. Me and my wife waited an abnormal amount of time just to get our drink orders let alone our food. Like others, I ordered gifts for Christmas. Ordered 12/13/24. Earliest available ship date was 12/17/24, which should have been fine considering we're only 1 state away. Label created 12/19/24. I called on 12/21/24 (Sat) and was informed that UPS was picking up that day and it would be delivered on Monday, 12/23/24. It's 12/25 and no delivery. Final leg is USPS and they don't even show as having the package. If Virginia Diner couldn't handle the volume, they shouldn't have advertised that it would be here by Christmas. I received a UPS notice that on 12-19-24 the label had been created although UPS didn't have the items. The UPS notice estimated delivery 12-21-24. I checked the tracking number on 12-21-24 and UPS still did not have the items. I called customer service and they indicated the package "might" be shipped on 12-22-24. Why is take 9 days to ship?It is ridiculous. The items were Christmas gifts. I suppose they will arrive by Christmas 2025. This shipping delay and misinformation is totally unacceptable. We went there for Thanksgiving dinner and it was amazing. Great food, excellent service and very relaxing. It was awesome that they had 2 buffet lines going at same time, was very easy to get your meal and trays were always very full. It will become our thanksgiving dinner tradition from now on.
