Well, I just wrote a long review and a Google Chrome error meant it has been lost into cyberspace :( I don't feel like rewriting it, so the short story is (a) mediocre service, (b) bread heavy BLT meaning the flavor was lost, and (c) ambiance fitting for a small town instead of what could have been a cosy spot for comfy conversations. First and last visit, Had breakfast and the waitress was very nice. We were sat near the bakery display which had huge flies inside of it. One man and his son walked up to get a a pastry and quickly walked away grossed out, pastries obviously not freshly made. The front windows we sat near were absolutely disgusting, more flies and some ants. The top of the windows were filled with cobb webs, looks to not have been cleaned in years. I would be scared to tour the kitchen. We drove past Smithfield station on the way out and it was packed, must be a good reason why this place was not. read more

Smithfield Gourmet Café is the spot! Small town ambiance with a hip country vibe! I called ahead after looking at the menu, to ask if they could accommodate my husband who is a pescatarian & doesn't care too much for usual breakfast type foods. They had a great salad option and were able to adjust for him and even added grilled shrimp for the additional protein! I enjoyed a delicious breakfast sandwich, as I had to taste the infamous Smithfield ham! This place did not disappoint! The waitresses, went above and beyond in service & friendliness and are to be commended! We went back the following day ( with 2 more customers) & experience the same amazing experience! Another trip back to Smithfield this morning. Too late for break but too soon for lunch so I had brunch. The line gathered outside the door was a tale tell sign of this is the place to eat (and because all else was closed still). It took a few minutes to wait for a table but it was oh so worth it! I opted a for the Half and Half. 1/2 chicken salad on toasted sourdough bread and 1/2 Caesar salad. Took only 5 short minutes til my plate arrived. The bread toasted to perfection still soft and doughy in the center. The chicken salad was THE BEST EVER CHICKEN SALAD I'Ve EVER EATEN The meat was so juicy and perfectly seasoned. I should have ordered a whole sandwich instead! The Caesar salad understatedly simple. Romaine with a creamy savory dressing. Service was quick, prompt and cheerful despite the restaurant was quite busy. I don't know how anyone could give this place four stars unless they want it to be something it's not. I'm a visitor to town, and I've been here twice on successive visits. Both times the food was amazing. All of us loved every bite - okay, every bite we could finish - I took a box home both times, and folks, I can EAT. The burgers were hearty and juicy, sandwiches were complex and homey at the same time. How can that even happen? I can't wait to go back to try some soup, or maybe brunch. This is a breakfast and lunch place. If you want a dark, "vibey" place, you may not love it. If you want a bright, happy, open, comfortable place to enjoy some great food while you talk, then enjoy! We ate outside both times, but the inside was welcoming and plenty big to keep space between tables. Our server was delightful and more than competent. We would go back again and again until we try every item on the menu, and then back again for specialty coffee and some home-baked deliciousness. This place is yet another adorable eatery in downtown Smithfield. It's practically across the street from Taste of Smithfield and has a bakery with fresh baked breads & muffins, which is what we normally buy when we go. The menu is extensive and as with many locally owned eateries, it puts its own distinct signature on its dishes. Everything is good though! Came back here to grab a few goodies to go and this place is still just as yummy as last year when I visited! This time I was able to try the following new items to me: Loaf of Sourdough bread-yum! So far have made French toast and regular toast with it and it is great! Cinnamon Roll-exactly what a cinnamon roll should be! Great flavor and good ratio of icing! If you haven't just spent a day wandering down Main Street in the old-market area of Smithfield, you're really missing out. It's quaint and charming, with tons of little shops and eateries. I was in the area a few times recently and stopped into Smithfield Gourmet Bakery and Cafe several times. On my first visit, I sat down for breakfast - yummy, home-cooked food with little pretentiousness. In terms of brunch eats, very solid. But where this place really wins is their bakery. SO many varieties of fresh baked bread, muffins, pastries, pies, etc. - and every single one I've sampled has been delicious. The tomato basil bread makes the BEST grilled cheese on a rainy day. The honey almond is delightful for breakfast fare like french toast. The muffins are as big as your head and OH SO GOOD - the cherry crumb and Boston cream stand out in particular. On Saturdays (I don't think it's every Saturday - but check their schedule), there is a farmer's market nearby and lots of places have open spaces and samples. You can just wander and shop and enjoy the beautiful weather. Really, really lovely. I hope to spend more time in this area soon! read more

We had only a 5 minute stop at this bakery but it was going to tell the whole story of what a great bakery this is. My cousins and I got 6 cookies (for the price of 4): peanut butter, molasses, snickerdoodle... can't remember all - but our palates remember how these cookies just melt in your mouth with cookie goodness! We also bought a quarter of the rum cake - yummy. Not to mention - pretty nice spacious (not for sitting but for watching them bake!) space. The portions are affordable and just right for breakfast before walking around the farmers market. The omelet was hot which was a plus; however, most of the bacon inside was burnt. The sourdough toast was buttery and very good. The sausage was waaaaaaaay over cooked and hard as a rock. The hash brown was okay, not as hot as I would have liked but okay. My wife had the French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and the pumpkin dessert. She said, her (French toast and eggs) meal was cold and not very special! The Service was okay, not very customer friendly or helpful with the menu. This is a lovely little cafe in Smithfield. We came first thing on a Saturday morning right when the cafe opened and were seated right away. Our server was friendly and helpful. I went with the safe and standard sure thing for me, the chicken salad sandwich. They serve it with lettuce and tomato and I chose the house-made fresh rye bread, a small house side salad, and a side order of house-cut fries. Nailed it! The house-cut fresh fries were AMAZING. The generous portion was easily enough for 2-3 people and my husband was thrilled with that because he ate a ton of them despite having his own large plate of food to eat. Haha. The rye bread was thick and fresh and delicious. It was, without a doubt, the best rye bread I have ever had. I'm not kidding. And I have eaten a lot of rye bread. My husband went with the fresh toast casserole and hot chocolate with whipped cream. YUM. The french toast casserole was thick and really hearty so, not much my thing as I'm not one for french toast, but he liked it. The hot chocolate was really delicious. I know I'll be back for some of that on a cold winter day. They have lots of fresh goodies like cookies, pies, cupcakes and such in the glass cabinet up front and they also sell loaves of the fresh baked bread for $5.99 or so. Our waitress was so friendly and nice. She greeted us promptly, sat us in the back room away from the door (at my request because I was cold) and paid just the right of amount of attention to us during our meal. She made pleasant small-talk with us afterwards when we paid the tab about the town. This was a cute shop with great service and great food. Came here on vacay with friends before we headed back home from vacationing in Virginia. Upon arrival we were greeted at the door and seated. The waitress that came to our table was very polite and had a sweet voice. She started us off with some drinks and then proceeded to take our order and was very accommodating I ordered the French toast on sourdough bread, a few slices of bacon, a few slices of lightly toasted in-house Almond bread and a side order of grits. The French toast was by far (THE BEST) I've ever had!! The bacon was just your typical bacon but made just right. The grits were different than what I was used too, meaning they were creamy as opposed to the more gritty grits. They were delicious though Lastly... The Almond bread, Well that was hands down delicious. After we finished our breakfast, we paid the bill and I bought 2 in-house Banana Nut Muffins and a cream filled Pastry. So all in all I highly recommend anyone passing through town whether your a local or simply passing through, GIVE THIS PLACE A VISIT!! You won't be disappointed. While in Smithfield the other day, I decided it was only fair that I check out Smithfield Gourmet Bakery and Café for lunch since I've only been to their bakery, and that's what I based on my review. Here's my update: They sat me by the table near the bakery counter. The service was better than normal on previous visits at the bakery. My server was friendly and prompt. The only thing I didn't like was that she kind of rushed me through my order, and she never asked me what type of bread I wanted. I was going to say sourdough, but she never asked and I forgot to mention it. Oh well. 3* Irish Stout Potato Cheddar- This was the Soup of the Day and was after St. Patrick's Day. I was excited when I saw it, but in the end, I was disappointed in the soup. The flavor was pretty decent, but it was basically purée. There were no chunks of potato or texture. Maybe I just didn't get any in my bowl. 3* Turkey and Avocado Focaccia- This was an interesting sandwich and I couldn't really decide on a rating. The bread (crusts taken off) was toasted, but the rest of the ingredients were cold. FYI--all of their bread is made in-house. Each ingredient was fresh and tasty, but the sandwich started to fall apart. In the end, it was good, but it wasn't fantastic. 3.5* I also picked up a few items from the bakery, but the one that stood out was the Easter Egg Cake. I saw them sitting in the display case while eating lunch, and couldn't keep my eyes off of them. They were stunning! I was surprised when I got it home and tore into it. The chocolate cake was nice and moist. Delicious! 5* I felt that my previous review was a bit harsh, so I'm bumping it up to a 3. (I would give them a 3.5 if I could.) And forget my comment about skip it--if you're in Smithfield, definitely check them out. You never know what treasures might be waiting for you in the bakery display case. read more

0 Stars I had an allergy attack due to black mold present in the vents on the ceiling! (photo attached) The cream horns were filled with greasy frosting not real cream filling and the other pastries tasted like cheap imitations of the real thing. The paste LOOKED good but tasted awful. The cakes were good but I highly doubt they make them. The wheat bread tasted like rough cardboard. When I brought this to the attention of the owner in a private message (before deciding to leave this review) he or she just boasted at how delicious and popular they are and that their pastries exceeded the quality of ones eaten on their recent trip to Italy. ....cough.. choke She offered me a refund , we actually spent 105.00 there.. which was a waste , and she only refunded me for the eclairs and "frosting" Horns. I think that was low class considering the bad experience and egotistical, defensive response to my legitimate complaints. Word of mouth is quite effective and the words from my mouth are don't waste your time or money. Unless you love Twinkie's.. and cheap cookies from Walmart, then you may enjoy this knock off restaurant.
