I would be remiss to not review Virgil's and give it my stamp of approval as an exquisite steakhouse. I had the clam chowder, Caesars salad, and one of the specials, which was a boneless New York steak sourced locally , ordered medium rare. Oh, lets not forget the dirty Martini I ordered off the cuff, neglecting to read their cocktail menu, an oversight I later regretted. This was all very enjoyable: the in-house Caesars dressing practically a food group on its own with the proper amount of garlic, and the clam chowder so deliciously creamy it could give Seattle chowder a run for its money. The steak, at perfect temperature, was very juicy and tasty indeed. I regretted not studying their cocktail list before ordering my go-to Martini. It is extremely sophisticated; I have never seen its equal; and I would have loved to try one or two of these cocktails had I not reached my limits that evening. I loved the decor, an old school set back into the old west, and the dim atmosphere. Service was very attentive and top notch. I have not been here since January 2020, and tonight was my glorious return to this downtown Pendleton staple establishment. You will see here are some photos from my visit from two years ago, as well as from tonight. Both these dinners were so remarkable that I decided to group the pictures into one review. In 2020, I ordered the dip and deep fried oysters, as well as crème brûlée. Tonight, I went for the Oscar special steak, did jumbo shrimp cocktail, and, yes, the crème brûlée again. I really enjoyed my Roy Rogers beverage, as I was a designated driver tonight. My friend who joined me today enjoyed her steak, ribeye, as well, and we noted that our individual jumbo shrimp cocktails were perfectly sized for an appetizer. I am fortunate to have had a chance to compare what this restaurant experience is like for a solo diner, as I remember that January dinner like it was yesterday, as well as in company of a longtime friend tonight. Tonight, my friend and I ordered our steaks medium rare, and they were perfectly done. Juicy and perfectly seasoned; we both chose rice pilaf as a side and my friend went for the salad with a ranch dressing. What super cool little place. Staff was friendly and nice. Service was pretty good over all, we had a group of like 18 people. The bummer part was the food. I ordered steak with mushrooms and sauce. The flavor was good, but I got two tiny mushrooms like the size of a kidney bean. And my steak was super tiny. This place is not cheap. And I was expecting a little more than what came out for $35.00, like I left there still hungry. And so did a buddy that ordered the same thing, but lucky for him he got like 4-6 mushrooms.. not real sure I would go back due to portion size. read more

The ambiance was amazing! My husband and I had been traveling for days and I wanted to play cribbage, he was too tired so I left our travel set at the hotel. Low and behold there was a set at every table! SCORE! I got my way after all. (; Our starter dish was a selection of cold veggies and fresh bread with a house dipping sauce that I can't rave enough about. We had mussels over a buttery garlic pasta and an arugula salad with candied pecans with a wonderful house dressing. Then we shared a rib eye steak with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli. We had heard a lot of great reviews at the Wildhorse Poker Roundup about Virgil's, so we went to try it. You walk in and immediately are struck with the unique and classic ambiance of the place. Onto the food; Bread- the kicked things off with amazingly fresh bread and a garlic vinegar olive oil that was delectable. Starter salads- all were very fresh and perfectly dressed Apps- shrimp cocktail, clams Both were fresh and made with excellence. Entrée- ribeye plate w sweet potato fries, crusted halibut I cook a lot of steaks at home so I'm very critical and this ribeye was amazing. Full discolure: Review and visits are during Covid-19 pandemic. I'm currently working in the area for the next few months and I asked my sales guy where to go for dinner. Virgil's at Cimmiyotti's was at the top of his list and I can see why. I have to say, I was just super grateful to be able to have a sit-down dinner during this pandemic, and in fact this was my first one in so many months. The staff took all the precautions - wearing masks, blocking off tables to allow for social distancing, sanitizers, etc... The menu is simple - some meat, pastas, seafood. On my first visit, I had the Filet Minion, and opted to do all veggies, so it came with the best asparugus side dish I've ever had. As I always request, the filet was cooked medium rare, topped with bacon and finished with a Pendleton whiskey demi-glace reduction. It was superb! I also ordered the soup, which was a cream of asparaus that day. By the way, on my other visits, I also opted for the soup, which was so good each and every time - even during this hot Pendleton summer! I still have to try the pasta dishes, but I have plenty of opportunity to do so, since I'll be here for a while. On the rare occassions I order dessert, their cheesecake is my go to! The good: The service was fantastic. The waitress was very friendly and helpful and service was prompt and attentive. The ambience is pretty cool and the history displayed on the walls adds to the affect. The not-so-good: The food was average, which made it a touch overpriced for the quality. Everything was edible and had decent flavor, there were just a few missteps with preparation and cooking, such as doneness on steaks (all were finished one "level" more done than ordered). Was referred to this restaurant by friends. It did not disappoint. Our meal was excellent. Very good food. We were disappointed we were traveling and could not take a doggie bag. Our server was outstanding. She is a teacher that supplements her income by working there. We had the clam chowder that had more clams than I've ever seen. My husband had steak that was topped with crab and I had chicken. Both were cooked perfectly. Chicken was very moist which is unusual to find. One of my top 5 favorite restaurants in the US. I was getting gas and checking Yelp for places in Pendleton, OR to eat. I have not previously found anything that I love on prior trips through Pendleton. I looked at Yelp pictures and reviews and decided to try Virgil's at Cimmiyotti's (what a long name). I called and asked how long the wait was, and had the friendliest individual reserve me a table. After punching the address into the GPS, I called back and shared that I was farther away than I thought. I shared with her that I might be delayed by 20 minutes. No worries, the same friendly person assured me of a table. I arrived and saw the exterior and wondered if I perhaps chose the wrong place. The front just looks a little dated and the windows are closed with drapes, but don't let the outside fool you. Keep going, this place is incredible. I decided to enter. Wow, was I ever surprised! The place was packed to the gills. I guess the local crowd knows where to eat. The hostess greeted me, and asked if I was the one who called. She immediately seated me at the reserved table. So far so good. I cannot even describe the rest of my experience. I have travelled all over this country and eaten in some of the finest restaurants, but my experience at Virgil's was unbelievable. First of all the service - impeccable. All of the staff were extremely attentive, fast, friendly - everything I would ever hope for. They got everything perfect in service. Food - where do I start. Absolutely amazing and perfectly cooked. I decided that the steaks looked really tasty from the pictures. So, I asked the server whether she liked the rib eye or the fillet mignon more. She said, "I'm a rib eye girl." I personally like both cuts, but I went with her recommendation and chose the rib eye. I ordered a salad with my rib eye. The salad was amazing. One of the best salads that I have ever enjoyed with a dinner. I would go back just for the salad, which I think was a spring mix with bleu cheese and some extras that just made the flavor incredible. I was asked by one of the servers how my experience had been so far. Perfect was all I felt at that moment. The servers were constantly attending to my needs. Now the steak. I am a real food snob. I like to eat in good places. I look at Yelp a lot when I am out of town, and I rarely give a review. I am really selective. This place was amazing. Most steak places get my order wrong. I prefer medium rare, but piping hot on the outside. The piping hot (straight off the grill) is the hardest part for steak places to understand. Most steak restaurants think a steak should rest - wrong! No one ever allows their steak to cool at home - straight from the grill to the table and call everyone to the table 5 minutes before pulling the steaks. I think most people like their food and their steaks hot. Few restaurants in this country can ever seem to do a piping hot steak even when I always specifically ask - except Virgil's. I asked for "hot off the grill", and specifically asked them to bring it straight from the grill to my table. When my meal came, I could not believe my steak. Holy cow! The steak came piping hot, and the flavor was to die for. I only needed a little pepper - everything was seasoned and cooked perfectly. One of the best steaks that I have ever had in this country. Furthermore, the asparagus was cooked perfectly. Lightly steamed, not flimsy or overcooked - perfect. And, the asparagus, tasted wonderful. The potatoes were also perfect. I had only planned to eat half of my meal since I am watching my calories, and a rib eye is a ton of food. However, I was so blown away and savoring every single morsel of food that I polished off the whole steak. I had to; I was in food heaven. There was nothing going home with me. The only regret over this was eating too many calories and not ordering a meal to go for the next day - no kidding. I travel to Pendleton a few times every year, and you can sure bet I will be back to Virgil's. I had to meet the owner before I left. Her name is Jennifer Keeton. Turns out she was the one who answered the phone and greeted me when I arrived. She was very nice. She told me how difficult the past year had been since Oregon had closed the restaurants until the previous week. I felt so bad for her and the other business owners in Oregon who have suffered from the effects of government intervention. I will be back Jennifer. Hopefully, I can bring my wife next time. This was a Yelp decision as we were traveling through Pendleton. Virgil's at Cimmiyotti's is a gem in a city that is suffering from current nationwide problems. The downtown core is a bit seedy with homeless & a substantial number of vacant storefronts. But this place was fantastic. The ambience is a bit dark, but it all adds to the environment of the speakeasy feel. First we had a drink at the bar with a very nice bartender. Then we decided to eat. Steak was amazing, side of spaghetti was excellent. Portions were more than enough. Pre-meal bread was soft & warm, a few extra items on the bread tray, was perfect to get the palette working. Very disappointed this trip to Cimmiyotti's. Ordered the filet and asked if had center cuts. Server had no idea but said he would check. I indicated I hated fat in my filet. He said they are very lean. Server never came back to tell me about center cut until my filet was delivered. Steak was the fattiest filet I've ever had. Not quite as fatty as a Rib Eye, but far too fatty than I would eat. I indicated how fatty it was to the server and his response was, "that's our filet." I asked to talk to a manager who was kind enough to check to see if they had lean fillets and said they all had a fair amount of "marbling." Well, last trip to Cimmiyottis for awhile. Four of us came for dinner. SO disappointed. Really looked forward to trying this place. Was impressed with the way it looked inside, and the rose decoration on the table. Service was REALLY slow the whole time. First they brought my husband soup instead of salad. The clam chowder I ordered was bland, but edible. (Roosters restaurant has way better on Fridays ) My Son ordered the tomahawk and said it was delicious. I am thankful that his meal was good, because he is in the Military, leaving the country in a few days, and we wanted to treat him and his wife to a special meal. Her ribeye looked great, but after dinner it appeared that she had not ate much. She stayed it was mostly fat. My husband and I ordered prime rib- medium. The meat was undercooked, so stringy we could hardly cut it, and was tasteless. I decided to keep mine ( pictured) because I was hungry, and then decided to try to throw the rest on my bbq at home, but my husband sent his back. Told the staff that it was raw, and terrible quality. Our bill was $188. They removed my husbands meal, but three of us left hungry. FALSE ADVERTISING!! We were in Pendleton competing at the rodeo and thought we would treat ourselves to a nice fancy meal to end the long week of traveling. We called the day before and made reservations, when we showed up to be seated we were escorted through the nice restaurant, outside under a tent with with plastic chairs & table. We ordered, paid $120 for a sub par steak, very small salad, 3 pieces of bread, water out of plastic cups and sat through a rainstorm with it flooding and others hovering over our table to get out of the rain. I understand the weather is out of their control, however the REAL ISSUE was when we had to get up and walk inside to get our check (mind you we waited 15 mins for it and got soaking wet doing so) there were tables open, big salad plates, nice glassware & drinks, well presented food and everything we WERE looking forward to yet did NOT receive or even offered to be seated inside! So just FYI, if you make reservations do not expect to be treated well! We were stuck outside, at a backyard picnic, paying "prestigious" steakhouse prices. In a town famous for rodeo you'd expect to find a great steakhouse...this is not it. Picked this place off Yelp because of the rating and could not have been more disappointed.
