Recently stayed in the Matisse penthouse suite at Villas Geminis, which has an outdoor soaking tub (as do their other two penthouse suites). The hotel itself is very charming with an artistic flare; each room is inspired by a different artist. It's located within walking distance of a reputable bank (Scotia Bank) and many great bars and restaurants. They serve a lovely complimentary breakfast each morning starting at 8 am (hard boiled eggs, breads, granola, the best seemingly freshly squeezed orange juice). You can sit at a large communal table or at one of the many bistro sets throughout their garden. The staff is very friendly. Carmen, who sits at the front desk from 8-noon and then again from 4-8 pm is helpful and attentive. Free wifi provided in the rooms. We took a couple of their bikes down to the Tulum ruins and along the beach one *thankfully cloudy* morning/afternoon. This was a great way to get around, especially since there's a main road (with a bike/walking path) that takes you from the downtown area to the beach. You could also easily bike around the downtown area, as many others do. (But taxis are very reasonable and everywhere -- about 70 pesos or 3.50 USD to get to the beach from Villas Geminis/downtown). There are many things to do nearby, including cenotes. We visited Gran Cenote, which I highly recommend. It's definitely worth noting that (in case you're unfamiliar), downtown Tulum is not a beach town. However, many say the best restaurants in Tulum are in this area, and it's certainly a great way to save money compared with comparable (pool, A/C) much pricier lodging on the beach. We enjoyed our stay. Thanks Villas Geminis! read more
