Village Inn is one of those underrated restaurants that serves some delicious breakfast and even better pies! Even though Village Inn is a franchise, I think it's a must when traveling to El Paso, especially since its only Texas locations are in this city. With that being said, I had to stop here during my last trip to the border town. We came here in the evening with a large group and the staff quickly put some tables together for us. Their menu features classic American staples for breakfast and lunch. So I just needed a piece of pie and coffee, you know, like Andy and Barney would mosey on down to the cafe and have a slice of pie and coffee on the Andy Griffith Show back in the day? Well village inn is the closest I can get to that 'round here. Their pie selection has you going "I want that one, and that one, and that one but warm with ice cream!" I settled on peach lattice with no ice cream, and coffee and a water. The pie was baked a tick too long, the crust had that slightly over baked texture and taste, like it was about to burn but got snatched out of the oven just in time but the bitterness in the taste still remained. The filling started to evaporate in that over-baking but enough juice still remained and the peaches were delicious. The coffee? Was kinda strong for my liking, I think another Diner that rhymes with Lenny's has much better coffee. Service was fine, I was greeted quickly and sat immediately and a young man Came to get my drink order almost immediately but honestly there were only about 3 cars in the parking lot this afternoon. The place was clean, all tables set with blue coffee mugs and menus and silverware. Lots of blue when Village Inn's main color is a soft mint green. I suppose this is because they are getting ready for the changeover we've been told was coming for like 5 years or so to change them all to Butter smith's and leave the Village Inn Franchise. Shoutout to David working at the front. I was in town for a week and my Grandma wanted me to bring back her favorite pie she misses. He hooked me up by letting me have the pie sit in the freezer overnight (since they didn't have any for the flavor she wanted) and let me pick it up the next day with no hassle. I came to Village Inn during a recent visit to El Paso. I grew up coming here with my family and generally enjoyed it. It was a Sunday early afternoon, around 12, and it wasn't crazy busy. We were able to get sat right away. Our server was very nice and attentive throughout the whole meal, which we appreciated. The seating at most restaurants is well spread-out with a mix of booths and tables. My go-to is the "Inn's Breakfast": Hash browns, ham, bacon, Swiss & American Cheese topped with two scrambled eggs with a side of pancakes. I always enjoy the combination of all of the ingredients in this dish, especially topped with the melted cheese. This time around I just didn't enjoy it as much--there was WAYYYY too much hash browns, and unfortunately they didn't have any flavor, so it was like eating a layer of cardboard. We were seated right away, our orders were ready within reason and we of course bought one of the famous Village Inn pies! Love their pies! We ordered through doordash and after our order was taking longer than usual, our dasher reached out to us first and told us the restaurant was very busy and they were just waiting on the (whole) pie we ordered which we were charged $17.99 for. When we finally received our order, after waiting longer than we should have, they still managed to mess up our order. They didn't give us the whole pie that we ordered but instead gave us a tiny slice yet charged us $17.99. The chicken fried steak skillet needs major improvement. I'm not sure what they did to the potatoes because they tasted sour as if they put lemon juice on them. It was terrible to the point where I ended up not finishing the food and throwing it away because it was inedible. I contacted doordash to credit us for the missing pie and they were only going to credit me $10... when I was charged $17.99. I did get them to credit me the full cost of the pie + some of the fees but it makes me wonder how many orders they mess up, charging much more and not giving customers their full orders. Pretty scandalous.. The key lime pie was nasty,I ended up not eating it. Perhaps it was a good thing they only gave 1 slice. Update 052224 Let me start by emphasizing that we are regulars of this location as others are either closed or now butter smith. On today's date, their internet went down as they were getting ready to close, and the night supervisor advised us as they were closing about the issue with their register not connecting to the internet and that they would only be taking cash. We advised them we didn't have cash on-hand, only cc. She called the GM to let him know about the issue, and our current state with regards to the form of payment. Their GM David, said we would have to go get it from an ATM at a nearby gas station in order to pay. I asked the night supervisor before heading out to get the cash, what would be discounted for the inconvenience as it wasn't our fault their system went down, to which she said she would give me "a pie for free," which I agreed was fair compensation for the trouble and inconvenience. I proceeded to go get the money from a gas station as my bank's atm is nowhere near the location. I went back and paid. The shift supervisor then asked me which pie I wanted? She came back to our table with a SLICE of pie.. My party immediately thought what kinda nonsense is this?? When comfronted about that, she replied, "we are not allowed to give a whole pie for free." Let me be clear this was not what she said originally. They made me waste my gas, time and incur an atm fee to get their money for a slice of pie. Needless to say, we didn't take the slice of pie. That would have been adding insult to injury. I will be contacting corporate about this incident, as I'm sure this will fall on deaf ears or erased by their GM David. On another note, the busboy was more understanding than the shift manager about the incident. Any other restaurant supervisor or GM would have comped our meal, given a significant discount, or actually gone through with what they said they would do to compensate for the inconvenience. It's a shame, this really wasn't about the darn pie. This had everything to do with their customer service, and how it was handled or lack thereof. This Village Inn is following safety precautions during Covid-19. The tables were six feet apart. All of the employees were wearing masks. The employees were also nice and helpful. Dining in isn't at the top of my priority list right now. However, I am glad that this Village Inn is following safety precautions for those who are interested. I spent about 10 minutes in there. I came to this Village Inn to pick up a couple of pies to give my mom for her birthday. No big party or anything like that of course. I was baking her a cheesecake but I messed up the crust! Lol. Luckily, she said she would take a raincheck. I'm on it! :) I was thinking of buying her a cheesecake but I bought her two pies instead. Honestly, she deserves an island of them! She does a lot for me and my family. I chose French silk (a yummy chocolate pie) and a lemon meringue. She enjoyed both of them. I've tasted both of these pies in the past but I didn't have any this time. Will I come back? Oh yeah for sure! I think their pies are reasonably priced. They're around $12-13 each. Since Thanksgiving is only two days away, they'll have plenty of them for sale. You can even get one on Thanksgiving Day here! 1st they don't participate with the pie promotion and don't bother to post on their door. 2nd after waiting 45 minutes for a sandwich, I ask if it's ready and polite waitress tells me they are backed up. First off, we were approached by the young lady who managed the night shift this evening (5/22); she notified us that the internet was down & we'd have to pay cash. We quickly informed her, none of us in our party had cash, only cards. She said she'd speak with her General Mgr to see what the next course of action would be. She returned & asked if one of us could go to the corner store or bank & pull out cash & return to pay. To be clear, we were a party of 5 and split in 2 parties. Begrudgingly, we offered to go after she said Cashapp (which we offered) was not an option. My husband asked straightforwardly: "What kind of discount will be applied for this inconvenience?" The Mgr said and I quote, "Well, I can give you a PIE." We agreed. Upon my husband's return with the cash in-hand, he paid our tab at which point was everyone included to avoid further inconvenience, and she proceeds to walk to the table with ONE SLICE of PIE... Talk about adding insult to injury... yeah let a party of 5, split that one piece amongst each other. I asked at this point in a frustrated tone... "You've got to me kidding me, is this really what you're giving us? You said a PIE." She replied, "Well yes, I can't give you a whole pie." I said, "No ma'am those were your words exactly. First you inconvenience our party with an issue that is NOT our fault, then you ask us to go retrieve cash which if taken out at the corner store & not your bank, will immediately generate a fee. You then offer us a PIE for this problematic visit and in turn bring us a SLICE. This is absolutely unacceptable and we will be calling corporate. So no thank you, I do not want your so-called PIE." I then left the slice at the table and we walked out. Come on, Village Inn on Trawood, you can do better. Train your employees, especially management to set the bar high and push for better customer service. This entire situation left a bad taste in our mouth & this is not at all how it should have been handled. We should have never been asked to go retrieve cash when they could have simply taken the burgers, pancakes, soup, and coffee as a loss. Yet when we agreed to get the cash, we should have been discounted the travel fee, corner store ATM fee, and given a PIE. This isn't entitlement, this is what's right. Do better! read more

Second time at this location, in 4 years we've lived in El Paso. A group of us with nothing better to do on Thanksgiving Day decided to go here for lunch, since none of us wanted to cook. We got there, we were seated almost immediately, ordered our food. Waited for our food, and watched the fuss that was happening at the front where people were picking up their pies for their TG dinner. Food arrived. Cold. Cold turkey, cold hamburger, cold omelette. Cold. We sent it back and asked for the manager. She came back and with a typical "can't be bothered, don't really want to be here" attitude, she half apologized and went to the kitchen. Everyone else but yours truly got their food back, hot, this time. My hamburger and fries must have been special to cook, since they took an extra 30 minutes to arrive at the table. Manager kept coming to the table, asking us if all's well, in a, well, typical, snarky tone. Eventually, after everyone finished their food, my burger arrived. They did me a solid and tossed some ends of fries they must have found at the bottom of the frier, and called it a day. We did get free pie, I guess, to account for the poor food and poor attitude. But even that was a long, drawn, conversation with one of us and took an additional 30 minutes to materialize. Then the bills came. We asked if we could give our money to the server but was directed to the front register. Keep in mind, they were still selling pies, so the register line was loooooong, extending to the outside of the restaurant. Nice cashier told us" oh, no, you can't pay here, you must go to the end of the line". The pie line. The one extending out of the restaurant. Luckily, one of those waiting to pay for the pies let us pay for our meals. I guess nice people do exist. They're not the staff of this restaurant, mind you. I was craving waffles and was not expecting to come here for waffles. ! I'm glad I came , their waffles are really good , definitely doesn't have a frozen taste ! Although , their syrup was definitely a mood killer , it's too sweet and has a heavy taste to high fructose corn syrup. There must be a party in the kitchen. I wish they would invite me. I mean all of the staff disappear into the kitchen and don't come back out to check on customers at times for ten minutes. Something cool must be happening back there. One could easily walk out without paying the check and no one would likely notice. It's a long standing issue at most VI restaurants in El Paso. This place pisses me off so much. Not because of their food. Simply because of the way they treat their employees. I'm about to make my fiancé quit. They told her she had to work yesterday. So I had to wake up early (0600) on my day off to take her to work. I drop her off and she calls me an hour later saying they dropped her for the day. They know she lives 30 mins away and thT she doesn't drive. She made 2.50. That didn't even cover her gas. Today she was scheduled from 9-1 and I'm here at 1245 to pick her up. A star for food maybe, This place is a joke for service, go here if you don't have anything else to do with your time, twenty minutes waiting for any time of service. Teenagers make up entire staff and are usually in the back talking and not serving customers. We kindly asked the greeter if anyone would care to take our order but she politely went to talk to waitresses and they just ignore her. There was also management but he was with in his office with other female teenager employees laughing having a good time, while the customers just waited. We decide to walk out, and never going back. I have been to Village Inn Restaurants before. I then found out that on the website you can sign up to receive coupons, and I did. I went in and asked the server, before I ordered, if I give her the coupon or bring it up front when I pay. Her reply was to bring it up front when I pay. When I was ready to pay and gave the coupon, the casher said that they did not accept coupons. I informed the manager that I asked the server prior to ordering and the server told me otherwise. The manager was not very polite and just gave the excuse that the server is new. That is no excuse. The problem is that the employee was not trained properly to the policies of that particular Village Inn and the manager should have honored the coupon. I will not go there again! read more

Everytime I go to this Village Inn it NEVER fails that I get bad service. now to anybody who thinks village inn gives good service, you must be use to horrible service and have accepted it as good service. I live down the street and I would think that by now they would treat me like a customer and not a nobody. I usually wait more than 3 minutes to be greeted. The server never introduces themselves to me and usually asks for my drink order and takes off. Doesn't bother to ask if Im ready to order or even offer an appetizer. A good server would do all this. Greet time is horrible, no upsells, and their menu knowledge is horrible. They forget refills and I have seen this and had this all happen to me every single time. Shame on management for not walking around enough to check on their guests. Shame on servers who think waiting on tables like its fast food and expecting an 18 % tip for not doing shit ! I saw several times a few servers making multiple trips for single items instead of consolidtaing everything onto one tray and making less trips. one time this server forgot to put my order in for the patty melt. She forgot to greet me, took 10 minutes to get 2 waters and about 40 minutes for a patty melt medium well and chicken strips. I could tell my entree was ON THE FLY because the patty melt did not stick and it just fell apart. I never complained. I wish I had. I felt sorry for Village Inn because they could not notice me as a guest. I felt bad as a guest that I spent over $30 tip included (wound up leaving a 20% tip although the server deserved 1%) Its just sad to say that they dont even notice greet times taking longer than 3 minutes, etc. Management didnt seem to care and definetly have never noticed all the bad service I always get there. I guess I go back because I like the food. The kitchen does a good job on the food. Its the service that is straight out horrible. If you want to get service as though you are in fast food, go to Village Inn. I said a menu would help as I don't know what they have (not a 1st time.) Brought food. Never came back to check on needs (not a 1st time.) Only 3 people in the place. In the past, found dirty silverware, lipstick on coffee muggs, cracked coffee muggs, and a large amount of butter smeared on a coffee server.
