Overall a good experience, but not good enough to go back. Ceviche was the highlight of all the dishes you see here. If I go back it's the only dish I will get. Service was OK. I felt like an after thought the whole night. The squid in my rice was extremely rubbery and not fresh, but overall taste of my entree/pisco sour/flan were good--but not memorable. Went here for dinner on a Friday night. They had a live musician playing saxophone, providing a really nice ambiance. For drinks, we ordered the pitcher of chicha morada, and an Inca cola. Unfortunately, they were out of inca cola , but it has to be imported so can't complain. I ordered the ceviche mixto clasico. It had Mahi, shrimp, squid, mussels, octopus, incan corn and sweet potato in a traditional ceviche sauce. It was really good, the sauce had a sour citrus flavor which went really well with the seafood. We were kinda full but they had flan as a desert option which is one of my wife's favorites, so we ordered to share. It was beautifully plated and tasted divine. read more

Our dining experience was excellent except for one thing. We had reservations but we waited forever to be seated. It is a small restaurant so I did have some understanding but it did seem like a excessive amount of time since we had reservations. That being said, the food was great! From drinks to dessert, it was all delicious! Our server was fantastic and had good suggestions as a lot of the menu was not foods familiar to us. I had Loma Saltado and thought it was great! My husband had the Villa Peru Linguini which was also good. Others at our table tried a gluten free selection and it's always great when restaurants offer that! We had several of the ceviche varieties, all of which were amazing and so fresh. This restaurant is just another reason why Tucson is a Foodie destination! read more

I was in Tucson visiting an elderly parent. I wanted to take her out for a nice dinner and set up to visit a local steakhouse when she asked if we could go to Villa Peru. I made a reservation through OpenTable and off we went for an early dinner. It's located in an area known for great dining with other major fine dining establishments very close by. We were there early enough where we had a choice of any table. Jordan was our waiter and did a fantastic job attending to our culinary needs and provided great advice and service. We started out with Papa A La Huanciana which was a cooked whole skinned potato cut into slices and covered in a saffron cheese type sauce. It was delicious! We also added Peruvian Fried Calamari which I was very impressed by. Very tender and "very" lightly breaded with a nice savory seasoning added. For the main course, I had the Arroz Con Mariscos which was very similar to a seafood paella. Very nicely arranged with 2 mussels, 2 clams and plenty of calamari over Peruvian rice. Mom had the Arroz Chaufa which was a pyramid of fried rice embedded with chunks of chicken, pork and shrimp. For dessert, we shared a slice of pumpkin cheesecake which my mother started attacking before I could get a good pic. They a nice full bar, homemade sangria and a nice outdoor area for dining as well. Their prices are reasonable and food is authentic and tasty. read more

In a word, I would say this is average. Had the arroz Chaufa - not bad. We had the lomo saltado - tough meat. The leche de tigre was good. Had some fried plantains. These were good but they skimp on the portion. I mean, how much does one plantain cost? One costs less than a dollar. How many slices do you get in an order? I won't say but don't expect one plantain. The atmosphere was nice and the server was good. It was a little busy but some things - like dessert and the check took way too long. I felt this was pricy as I have experienced with many Peruvian restaurants. Not sure why but it is part of an image. I've had the best Peruvian food at the less expensive places though not in Tucson. I was visiting for the weekend so not sure what other places in town are like. I won't be back to Tucson soon so won't get a chance to try other items on the menu here. However, my first impression would keep me away and push me to try other places in Tucson before coming back here. read more

I celebrated my birthday here and it was a great experience! We were able to bring our own cake without issue. They even stored it and cut it for us. The food is amazing and I regret not ordering more items off the extensive menu! The sangria was strong and refreshing. I had the whole fish and it was cooked very well. After dining here I struggle to see why it's only 4 stars on Yelp. The food was incredible, absolutely authentic. Superb value too. We will *definitely* be back when we visit Tucson again later this winter. We tried 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, a salmon ceviche, and a Peruvian cocktail. I would order each item again in a heartbeat, though it may be awhile because there's so much more on the menu to explore. The staff was on the ball very helpful. Wanted to try something new as I love food exploration and came across this gem. The ambiance was so intimate. Reminded me of an upper east side modern chic restaurant yet offered a cozy vibe perfect a romantic date or even a wonderful family dinner. They had a live sax player who had an amazing music selection to compliment the mood. I love the open kitchen and seeing the flames off the line. We ordered three dishes that were all so good! The "green sauce" is to die for paired with almost anything. I also wanted to try the Peruvian sangria and it was very well crafted. The service was fast and friendly. I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately I don't think we'll be back. My family and I arrived at 5:45 right before the dinner rush and were quickly seated. However, all of the tables are pressed close together and along the wall and the service aisle is on the other side of the table, so it's a very...cozy arrangement. Drinks were brought out quickly, and we ordered the Corazon Anticuchos (veal heart skewers) as an appetizer which were delicious but were a very small portion. I ordered the Taste of Peru Platter, my wife got the Snapper a lo Macho (whole fried snapper), and my daughter got the kids fried fish nuggets. First off, the kids fish nuggets were out of this world delicious! My wife enjoyed her snapper, and while I enjoyed my platter, it was incredibly difficult to eat. The presentation was beautiful, but it was served in a circular dish you would use for chips and guacamole or something like that, so whenever I tried to cut anything the entire plate rotated. Both of the girls were done with their plates by the time I got to the 3rd portion of the sampler. It was frustrating to say the least. We had all finished our food and waited probably 15-20 minutes before our server took a break from chatting and check in. When the plates were being taken from the table, the busser spilled all of the juices (probably about 10oz) from the seafood all over my wife and didn't even notice until I said something and was helping clean up. It was just kind of shrugged off, which was beyond irritating. I immediately asked for the check, which took 10 minutes to get, then another 10 minutes to get it back. The 90 minute ride home to Sierra Vista made my truck smell so fishy from all of the spilled juices that I had to take it to be professionally steam-cleaned the following afternoon. All in all, while the food was pretty good, the experience was not at all what we expected. I highly doubt we'll be back. read more

We are working on eating our way through Tucson. My partner and I wanted to try out Villa Peru, as his mom is from Peru and the place has great reviews! First off, the ambiance and service was great. They've done a great job utilizing a very small space. There was live music (clarinet/sax) which was really nice. Our server was attentive and provided excellent service. We started with the tequeños. They tasted like they were fried in old oil, so we didn't enjoy them. My partner got the half rotisserie chicken and I got the tacu tacu. The white meat on the chicken was overdone and dry. The dark meat was cooked well, but very bland. The tacu tacu smelled great, but was bland, mushy, and greasy. We had the alfajores for dessert and they were GREAT. While the food wasn't great, we will probably try this place again and re-review. My partner wants to try the ceviche! read more

We made reservations to celebrate our anniversary. Even though we had reservations they sat us next to the kitchen a two top. The hostess said she couldn't sit us elsewhere as they were bigger tables and they could get larger parties ($). Service was initially attentive. Enough to get our order, then nothing. Our waitress found friend in the back of the restaurant that she preferred to spend time with and her trainee was enamored with a table that was spending buckoo bucks. We weren't cheap, ordering appetizers, main course, drinks. The food was delicious, but heavy on the salt. My husband and I loved the food but the service was awful. They only staff that was attentive was the water guy which was important due to the salty food. Needless to say, it did not add to our anniversary celebrations. This place is simply the best Peruvian food we have had (and that includes what we ate in Peru). Frida runs her small restaurant to perfection, beginning with her parents cooking exquisitely flavorful food in the kitchen, very attentive and knowledgeable table service, and fantastic selection of wines and cocktails. The Pisco Sour is one of my favorites. But the menu is populated by a wide selection of tasty appetizers, ceviches, causas, amazingly tender Lomo Saltado, and perfectly seasoned seafood and vegetarian dishes. Our favorite dishes are the fried calamari salad, Causa Acevichada, Leche de Tigre, and the Arroz con Mariscos. To be honest, you can't go wrong with trying anything on the menu! In addition, there is something on the menu for all dietary preferences (we became vegetarians 6 months ago, and still love the place). The atmosphere is unique. It's a very warm space, quite long and narrow, so you never feel like you are surrounded by other diners in a big room. Check it out! read more

Pisco Thursdays is a really great time to check out this place if you haven't already. They have appetizers specials, pisco specials, and live music. There's only a few Peruvian restaurants in Tucson and Villa Peru is great for the variety of pisco drinks they have, all the grilled dishes, especially the rotisserie chicken, and the wide range of other meats. But my favorite thing to get here is the picarones, which are basically Peruvian pumpkin goodness. I'm not sure they have them year round but they're one of the few places that serve them. Other dishes worth trying are the regular chupe de camaron, lomo saltado, and aji de gallina. The location is also great but the best part would probably be Pisco Thursdays, great affordable drinks. If you've never had Peruvian food, this place is a great first. read more

I wasn't sure if I should give 3 or 4 stars, but it might be that we ordered incorrectly. We've had Peruvian food only about 3 times, but we've always liked it. The patio is super small, 4 tables only. Inside isn't large either. We made a reso for an outside table and got there early so we could pick from the 4. Our waiter did a great job. When I asked for extra plantain chips, he brought out a bowl. I tried the Pisco Sour, and it was very fresh - fresh egg whites used. Very citrusy too. It was the Ceviche Festival so that's where we started. We had the ceviche mixto clasico (our favorite elsewhere) and based on our servers suggestion tried the salmon special. They came with the white corn and sweet potatoes on the side. The mixto was very good, though we didn't care for the muscle or clam. The salmon was good, but more asian in flavor, not what you would expect from ceviche. We ordered the whole fried fish to share, red snapper. Unfortunately, the waiter came out later saying they didn't have and whole fish but they could make it with mahi-mahi. Since mahi-mahi comes as a steak normally, I asked how it would be cooked (since the best part of the whole fish is the crispy skin). He said fried, so we chose to look at the menu again. We chose the paella. It wasn't anything to write about (especially after some of the Spanish paella we've had). read more

Decided to try something a little different on date night, so I made reservations at Villa Peru. I'm glad I did! What a treat it was! When we came in, we were given a little dish of spicy green sauce as well as a small bowl of Peruvian corn (heart face emoji here) and plantains. I had never had the Peruvian corn before (or even heard of it) but it was SO GOOD. The plantain chips were good too. Especially dipped in the green sauce. For an appetizer we had the papas rellena, which was a fried potato croquette stuffed with picadillo, as well as some chopped bits of hard boiled egg. It was perfectly flavored, not overcooked, and not too saucy. There was a red sauce drizzled on the plate with the potato halves that was the perfect compliment to the rellena. As my main course, I had the carapulcra, which is an incredible meat stew with papa seca (reconstituted dried potatoes) which came with a spiffy little pyramid of garlic flavored white rice, and slivers of red onions adorned with cilantro. I don't like cilantro (I have the gene that makes it taste like soap) so I stayed clear of the onions. The carapulcra was served in a small crock, and that's probably good. I could have eaten a mixing bowl full of it and still gone back for more. (I promptly went home to find out how to make it myself. I've never done that before.) DH had the lomo saltado. Steak strips with vegetables, rice, and Yukon gold fries. WOW. He shared a little with me, and it was also a winner. We were both very happy with our choices. I am already looking forward to our trip back. Probably for my birthday at the end of this next month. Till then, I'll be dreaming about this unbelievable meal. read more

This was such a fantastic meal. We started with the Piqueo Del Mar platter to share among the three of us (could serve 4). Such a great introduction to some ceviche and other items. So so good. Then added entrees after that. The meat eater of the group had the Churrasco a lo Pobre and raved. My husband had the Peruvian seafood paella. It was chock full of seafood and delicious. I had the Tacu Tacu (vegetarian) which had such great flavors. Our waiter, JJ, was just great. Explained easily the different categories and sizes of dishes so we didn't under or over order. All was great. This is a cute restaurant. Medium sized, but it's nice in the front as they have an open kitchen. In the back is a sit up bar, too. Absolutely going to return and try some other items. Really want to give this place another shot and go in person as opposed to pick up. I don't think take out is a priority- and sometime food just doesn't transport as well. Place looked great and presentation on tables looked very very good. Ordered take out on a Wednesday- was not over about 20% capacity- waited for about 25 minutes after specified pick up time. Food was tasty- enjoyed the chicken and yuca. Ceviche was on the small side and calamari sauces were missing (my fault for not checking). WOW. If you're looking for a small, authentic, family-run Peruvian establishment, this is the place to go. We came for Valentine's Day, and it was all hands on deck - our waitress, whose grandfather was the chef, mentioned that her husband, who normally doesn't even work in the restaurant, was also on site helping for the occasion. And what an occasion it was! I was given a rose while we got settled and examined the 3 course prix fixe menu. We were there late in the night, so the ceviche de congrejo had run out, but the kitchen fixed me a ceviche made of some form of white fish instead - and provided us with the meal-sized ceviche instead of the prix fixe appetizer ceviche! Service was spectacular, and food was so good that my mouth is watering just thinking about it right now. We ended up having tequeños de queso (because I have a thing for cheese sticks), ceviche, anticuchos filet mignon, taco tacu de mariscos, adobo de puerco, crema volteada (flan!), and helado de lucuma (still don't know what type of fruit a lucuma is but it was delicious). The wine pairing was shockingly only $10 additional, which is a great deal. 100% would pick Villa Peru again, for either a special occasion or just a nice dinner out. read more

To start my review off, I must say I am not a Peruvian food connoisseur. The place was nice and the service was good. I just did not enjoy the entrees. Started off with complimentary plantain chips and salsa. This was unique and pretty good. For appetizers we ordered the mixtos tequenos (ham and cheese) and lomo saltado tequenos served with homemade guacamole. I did enjoy these crispy fried bites and the guacamole was very good. For entrees, we ordered the rotisserie chicken and the aji de gallina. The rotisserie chicken was cooked well, but the spices were very overpowering. The aji de gallina, however was bland. It was shredded chicken with sauce and rice, but lacked flavor. I did enjoy the sangria and appetizers, however the entrees were not my taste. I would not return, but if you're into Peruvian food, it may be worth your try. read more

We had the lamb shank, the beef chimi and lots of starters and everything was bright and creatively plated, but most importantly was just freaking outstanding. Visited the location Saturday night prior to Valentine's Day. I would have given 5 stars but had to downgrade due to the reservation debacle. We had reservations for 6:30. When we arrived the couple before us were told their table was not ready, it would take 30 min, but offered a table on the patio to sit until then, which they accepted. The same issue occurred for us. And the couple after us. This was a habitual problem this particular night, they had overbooked reservations. And when a table did open for indoor dining they did not come and find us to move us indoor on a cold night, or at least offer. They did not comp us any drinks or appetizers to rectify the situation other than an apology. Moving on. Server was knowledgeable and fun to work with. This was our first visit to a Peruvian restaurant and did ask the server for advice which he expertly provided. Given the special occasion, the service was probably little slower than normal but not an issue for us. We started with an appetizer, papa a la huancaina, and pisco sour flight. This was a great way to start the evening. Next we had the salmon ceviche, and again was terrific. We love seafood, sushi, and sashimi, so for us this was tasty. For our entrees, we ordered carapulcra and frejoles con seco, and it was an amazing. The stew of the carapulcra was flavorful and cooked nicely, and the use of different spices was a nice blend. The beef tenderloin of the frejoles tore apart easily, cooked perfectly, and again flavorful. I probably would have liked a bit more kick but for my wife it was perfect. We shared the dishes! All in all it was an excellent experience minus the reservation snafu. We will be returning for sure and try different dishes. read more

I might be bias, but Peruvian food is the BEST. FOOD. IN. THE. WORLD. When the owners of Villa Peru, in Phoenix, moved their location to Tucson, I was ecstatic! This place is very mom and pop, and it shows through the heart and spirit they put in their food. Keep in mind that this place take a monden twist on Peruvian food, so if you're a traditionalist then you might not like this place. Regardless, try it. They imported most of their furniture from Peru, and they import all their ingredients from Peru too. It's also organic, so BONUS. I would highly recommend getting the ceviche. We had an amazing night tonight. The staff was very helpful and explained the menu and the food was delicious. They are very gluten friendly and start you off with these great corn nut snacks. We ordered the Peruvian platter which had their top three dishes. I loved the chicken and beef and my husband liked the seafood medley. We also got their ceviche medley and went with our waitress's favorite three. The Mahi Mahi was our favorite. This place is great for kids too. Who doesn't love meat and rice!
