This is truly my favorite bakery in Rhode Island. I come here once a week for either bread, pizza, calzones, or pastries. I will say that some of their items don't taste how they used to or at least what I remember from growing up, but it still is one of my favorite spots. You absolutely have to try a spinach pie from here, any of their muffins, GET THE SLICED BREAD me and my family fight over it, and literally any of their desserts/pastries but specifically a cannoli. The bakery pizza is also a must and dare I say the best bakery pizza I have ever had. They have 1-2 little round high top tables inside for seating but definitely a small area and wouldn't really recommend planning on eating inside (feel like it gets crowded and claustrophobic very quickly). read more

I would like to thank everyone at Vienna Bakery for the beautiful and delicious dessert tray our, out of state cousin, ordered for our mother's Collation, in January. As always the desserts were the talk of the collation luncheon. We were all pleasantly surprised by this amazing addition to the dessert table. Not only did Vienna Bakery make our family favorites, they took this order from an Ohio relative who had never dealt with the bakery before. This is not a good bakery. There are so many better tasting options in the area that are worth the drive (and actually worth the calories!). Just had the BEST bakery experience in my life. I needed some cupcakes for someone in my office and found Vienna Bakery just off of my morning commute. They greeted me as soon as I walked in and were super helpful when I told them what I needed. Not only was staff knowledgeable about their own product, but they were friendly and courteous, too. Went here with a friend to grab a couple of things to round out a brunch we were hosting. We decided to go with the chocolate chunk coffee cake and some cinnamon twists. I have to say that I was very underwhelmed by them in both the flavor and moistness department. The cinnamon twists were definitely better, but the coffee cake was probably one of the most bland I've ever had. Overall, prices here are very cheap, but quality of food isn't the best. That being said, the woman working here was very friendly--I just wish they had a better product. read more

The Balasco family has been there since before any of us were alive. Obviously, they are doing something right! Joseph used to let my grandparents and the others from the neighborhood cook our holiday turkeys in his bread oven. They have the best bread I have ever had. My brother's favorite is Sicilian and mine is the twin loaf. Italian bread sells out if you don't get there early. My favorite thing in the bakery since I was two years old are pretzel donuts. They are sugary sweet and melt in your mouth. I've never seen them anywhere else but Vienna. Bismarcks are to die for with cream and raspberry preserves. I buy them for friends as thank you gifts and they are always well received. I also buy zeppoles for Saint Joseph's day and bring them to all my family and friends. Pepper biscuits, hermits, pizza, bow ties, eckles cakes, palamers, Danish. All are very good. I buy hard crust rolls there every week for eggplant parm and meatball sandwiches and such. I read a review talking about pastiche on the hill. I'd put vienna's chocolate mousse cake against anything they've got and at half the price, maybe a third the price. I am an Italian from town and Vienna is as good as it gets for Italian bread, sheet pizza and sweets. read more

Can totally understand long lines, especially during a holiday like Christmas - they are to be expected. But, long lines that DO NOT move are not acceptable. Waited outside in 9 degree weather for a solid HALF HOUR only to see a meager 2 customers leave with their small orders. I left and decided to come back 2 more times to try my luck. Each subsequent time, the line and disorder looked equally bad. So, while persistent, I decided it wasn't worth the effort. Whether or not you'd admit it, your sales help seemed totally overwhelmed with the mob scene they were facing. Shouldn't be this difficult to pick up a box of pastry - should it? read more

A delightfully predictable old school, family Italian bakery. I find the pastries, cakes and other morsels of sweetness to feel like insta-cavities - just too much sweet to the tooth... no subtle sophistication here. Not even tempted to sample anymore. But people do go ape-shiz when they roll out the fried and yellowish custard-oozing zeppoles for St. Joseph's Day in March. You will still find me cruising into this bakery at least every couple of weekends for the bangin'est bread on the East Bay. Cheap, too. There are TWO types of fresh baked white loaves to behold: the hard, and the soft. I had been going hard for a long stretch (c'mon, crusty Italian loaf, sounds unbeatable, right?) until standing behind a regular who clearly knew what he was talking about and requested a bunch of soft loaves. The soft loaves still have a crusty exterior, but it's what's inside that transports you to the pillowy, swirling soft clouds upon which golden-curled Italian cherubs bounce and frolic. Slather in soft butter and commune ... Atkin's carb- and processed white bread-haters be damned. There is a time and a place for such things, and Vienna Bakery is it. read more

Old school bakery, ok setup. Friendly staff. The bismark looked much better than it tasted. This is the first time I have ever had one fall apart when I picked it up. The amount of jam was perfect but it had an artificial taste to it. I did not finish it. The brownie also looked ok but lacked good flavor. I only got 2 things so I don't want to be too harsh, but I was not wowed this time around. You will be charged more for using a credit card here, fyi. I find this to be a much better option than making a place cash only, letting the consumers pay the credit card fee if they wish. Also, no prices on anything. Always a negative. read more

So disappointed. Ordered a gluten free cake for my daughter's 30th birthday five days in advance. When I called on the day to pick up the order it was nowhere to be found. I recently bought a cake from Vienna, expecting that it would be the same high quality that I was used to. Unfortunately, this time the cake was inedible. Not only was the cake exceedingly dry, there was no flavor and the buttercream gritty and overly sweet. After spending about $25 on the cake, it was heartbreaking that no one could eat it. I also tried two muffins - one blueberry/corn and the other apple cinnamon. Although the corn taste was good, it was also extremely dry such that you could not eat it without a lot of coffee, milk or other drink. The blueberries were only present in one part of the muffin, as if someone used canned blueberries and a syringe to pipe them in after cooking Since they were not dispersed throughout the muffin. The other muffin was wet and dry at the same time and seemed very undercooked with the outside of the muffin so pale it was almost blonde. I heard that there were new owners, so maybe new bakers as well. Until they get their recipes correct with the right proportion of ingredients and right cooking temps and times, I will not be back. Stopped in to try a donut and picked up a chourico roll as well. Both were amazing. The chourico roll was warm, which seems obvious, but no one does this. YUM. The donuts were very tasty and fluffy. To the Vienna bakery I have been raised in Barrington and come from an Italian family. My dad will go to Vienna, bakery at least three times a week love the bread, all the pastries, pizza, spinach pies and so on in 2011. My dad was hospitalized and my mom and dad had their 50th anniversary and I ordered a cake from Vienna bakery And had it in the hospital. It was the best cake he ever ever had. A friend of mine birthday is April 8 today her friend John ordered a customized marble cake with whip cream and royal blue and purple writing for her 60th birthday ordered the cake last Wednesday pick the cake up today at 2 o'clock and there was like five young girls. There was a line out the door and I told him that there is an order for my friends birthday cake girls running in and out the back couldn't find it. Try to keep my cool finally I said what is the problem here I said I ordered a customized cake. Was told it was messy back there and a new girl took the order! The cake was ugliest i have seen in awhile! No roses and chocolate garnish that was not ordered! Cake was $50 and could of got a better one at the cake gallery or Shaw's and or Stop and shop!!!! My wife picked up petifores today. They lost the order yesterday so we repeated the order for the third time. 3 inch by 3 inch round with a crown design on top for our sons girlfriends baby shower. This was the only thing my wife was asked to do. She picked up hockey pucks today for about $80.00. The crown was a glaze from a tube and was the letter M. Great job. I called and spoke with Kristina and told her I wanted to speak with her manager. Kristina told me she was sorry but there was no one to speak to until Tuesday. I told her I wanted a call back by 2:00 pm today. I received no call and was hung up on twice when I called after 2 pm. The phone has been busy since. I will visit Vienna Bakery tomorrow morning when they are busy. No stars for you. I could not post without choosing one. So.... I visited Vienna Bakery today, Sunday morning and spoke with Joe. We had quite a conversation. One of the first things Joe said was that he was sorry I was not satisfied and before we had a discussion he wanted me to know he was returning my money? Not because I was right or wrong. But because I was not satisfied. We both came to the conclusion there was some miscommunication on both fronts. I could go on and on but to summarize, Joe was a stand up guy. While defending his business he also displayed sympathy for his customer. In the end I was satisfied with Vienna and will continue to buy my pastries there and visit in person before ordering a large special order. Thank you Joe and Vienna bakery. read more

It probably means I know my sweets a little too well but I could just tell right away that Vienna Bakery's sweet treats weren't for me. Too much sugar and too much shortening. However, the 10 year old boy I saw eating a jelly donut looked to be in heaven and his dad had 2 cupcakes in front of him so he clearly knew what he liked too! That being said, the croissant was freakin' delicious and the pizza strip was just as it should be....fresh sauce, lots of garlic and just a sprinkle of parmesan. The spinach pie looked tasty and my husband said it was but sadly I had to take his word for it because they didn't have any without pepperoni....even though they were calling them spinach pies....anyway under $5 for the 3 items is a great bargain. So I'll definitely be back to Vienna Bakery and maybe I'll go for a chocolate cupcake next time but I might just stick with the croissant and pizza strips. The best bakery I have ever been to. It is the one I grew up with, but I visit quite a few and none ever match their quality, selection, and prices. Everything is great but a few things really stand out. The eclairs are huge, always fresh (as in actually soft, unlike all the crusty eclairs I find everywhere else), and the chocolate topping and cream filling are not to sweet. The "RI style" pizza. Cold, square pizzas. I know that sounds odd but they are great. Essentially dough, sauce, spices, and powdered Parmesan cheese. Bismarks: Kind of like an eclair except with the creamiest, yet somehow lightest tasting whipped cream, topped with raspberry sauce. The cakes: Get your birthday cakes here, especially the chocolate mousse ones. The prices are great, the service is great, the selection is great. Worth a trip to Barrington if you are passing through (probably on your way to Newport). read more

I'm a bit surprised by the other reviews. This bakery is mediocre at best. We've been a number of times, enough to tell that it wasn't just the one time we've been when the food was sub-par, and we have tried a very wide assortment of their desserts. We even splurged once on a full cake of their's which was both expensive AND dissapointing. Unfortunately, it's the only place in town, if you compare it to Dunkin Donuts in town you might prefer it, but it really doesn't hold up to any stand alone bakery I've ever been to. It has gotten to the point where we have just stopped going and would prefer the inconvenience of driving into providence for Pastiche if we want something special. That's saying a lot given how convenient the location of Vienna is for locals. This review does not pertain to any of their breads which I haven't tasted. read more

We stood, enrapt and googly-eyed, taking in the sheer vastness of their offerings. Donuts, cakes, pastries, calzones, rolls, cookies and tarts of every size, shape and flavor combination possible. I haven't seen this much cake since before the French revolution. We've since tried several different items here and now come regularly. I can attest, hand on heart, that it's not a drug if you can't inhale it or shoot it into your arm. Some might find these a little over-sweet--this coming from a die-hard sweet-tooth!--but they get points for execution and variety. I used to get stuff from here all the time when I was a kid. They do run on the sweeter side which is just how I like it, though it's not for everyone. My favorites would be the iced sugar cookies with jimmies and the chocolate covered angel food cake. Their cupcakes are also really good. I only get pastry here so I can't remark on their breads or other goods. But this is my favorite bakery. I make sure that when I drive down to RI to visit family I make a Vienna Bakery stop on the way. This place is open on Sundays and is very inexpensive. read more

This is probably one of those places that I always view with the tiniest bit of nostalgia when I go there. It's a short drive from the Barrington Library playground and was always a go to stop on the way home. The number one reason to go here is the jelly doughnuts. It's actually my only excuse, most of the time. I have no idea what they do to them, but they're the epitome of sugared perfection. What makes this even better is I am pretty much unilaterally not a fan of jelly doughnuts. Most of the ones you find these days are very sadly lacking. It's either a teeny smidge or nearly a whole jar of red, viscous, slightly perfume-flavoured glop in the centre of a lacklustre hunk of dough. This is not what you get here. The jelly inside actually tastes like it might have once come from an actual fruit (raspberry?) and the dough is slightly sweet, but not so sickly sweet that it's competing with the filling. The outside is just a little crispy and has enough sugar to make a proper mess when you eat it. If I stop here, I need to bring a half-dozen home, if I want to be allowed in. The Pac-Man cookies are indeed another attraction. I'm not going to pretend they're the most delicious cookie in the world; they're not. But they're Pac-Mac, complete with yellow sugar colouring and a brown M&M eye. I can't say I really buy them anymore as an adult, but they're a great kid-friendly treat. I imagine they probably just taste better if you're under 10, even if you don't know who Pac-Man is. read more

This was my third time ordering at Vienna Bakery. The first two orders they didn't get my orders right - they didn't put the correct filling in the cake that I had requested. Now, On My third order, I had ordered a cake for my daughter's birthday. After a few days, it was time to go pickup my daughter's cake. I was there for approximately 20 minutes waiting for them to find my cake. So, after 20 minutes, one of the bakery's employees came out and told me that they couldn't find my cake - why?? ---Because they DIDN'T make my daughter's birthday cake. The first two errors I tolerated. But, this ERROR---is completely unacceptable!!! Never again will I order anything at Vienna Bakery. Unacceptable!! read more

I'm struggling to write a positive review, I want to like this small town cafe but their customer service is awful. Walked in on a Tuesday afternoon for a hot chocolate and a treat for my daughter. Two women were working one older one a college age. The older woman first started helping me and I asked her for a hot chocolate she said they didn't have hot chocolate anymore...baffling since on their window and on their menu on the board it has a hot chocolate morning special. The younger woman piped up and said they did have hot chocolate. Both women began working on the hot chocolate, then the older woman walked over to me and I asked her if I could have an apple turn over she said 'one employee could only help one customer I would need to wait for the other girl.' This was odd since she greeted me and started taking my order. In any case the younger girl handed the older woman my hot chocolate and reluctantly got the apple turn over out and then rang me up. Amazing old school bakery. generously stuffed spinach pies, tasty calzones, Italian deli style pizza, the best eclairs, Joe made a gorgeous and incredibly delicious wedding cake for our daughter, always accommodating. Food is high quality, fresh, and always delicious. I love that the breads and pasteries that my grandparents, my parents, and I grew up on can still be found here for my kids and grand kids to enjoy.
