First time here today and it was amazing! Food was so good! The shrimp Po-Boy, was CRAZY! A MUST try if you're in the area!

Overall: 4.4/5 [dine in] Vic & Al's is adjacent to the Vortex so we stopped by for a late night dinner. They have some parking in the front with a bit more in the back but there's street parking if they're all taken. Upon walking in, the restaurant has a market, antique, and moody vibe. They display fresh ingredients and spice jars on the right wall. When you check in, they ask you if it's your first time if it is, they explain the way their restaurant works which is 1) you put in your food order and open a tab, 2) move to the left and order a drink with the bartender, 3) grab your drinks and go to your assigned table, then 4) go to the check-in/bar to close our your tab. They have a different menu daily, serve super fresh food on these small metal lunch trays, and does last call for alcohol 15 minutes before closing. Fried Shrimp Po'Boy ($19): The menu says $18 but they charged $19. The shrimps were big and had a thin batter layer. The bread was nicely toasted but the filling could use a bit of work. I think the filling portion was not enough and there wasn't enough flavors to bring this home. Blackened Catfish With House Green Salad ($18): I loved this entree so much. Everything on this plate was delicious. Flavors & portion sizes were on point. I could eat this every day. Hurricane ($11): A sweet and delicious cocktail--definitely a favorite! Freeport Martini ($11): A bold, coffee-forward drink featuring cold brew. While I was hoping for some sweetness from the pecan bitters, it tasted more like straight black coffee. Love this Vic and Al's ambiance, very Austin, casual, lowkey but still pretty inside. You ordered at the counter and they brought out the food for you. The prices are not crazy which I appreciate. We ordered a few things off the menu: Fried boudin - so flavorful, 8/10. Crispy outside and soft/packed with flavors inside. Blackened catfish - good, I honestly dont remember much of the flavor. Pork belly rice - 7/10, kinda salty for my taste, and lacking a sweet/spicy aspect. It was more on the salty side Good service overall, my impression was that the mains are heavier on the seasoning/salt but that might just be southern cooking. Finally stopped at the place I had passed by for over two years and it did not disappoint. Walked in and immediately was greeted by the bartender who offered free samples of their in house drinks. They seriously make the syrups/mixes in house. The food was just as delicious. I got the catfish and was very satisfied. The moment we walked in the door we felt welcome. They really care about their ingredients and quality. The drinks are on point and you can get them mocktails style or now. You move to the next area and order from a limited but thoughtful menu. The po' boy shrimp sandwich was incredible! Salad fresh and beignets hot and fried to perfection. I had a great experience my first time at Vic & Al's, I would highly recommend this place. Everyone we encountered introduced themselves and made us feel welcome. You start at the bar and we got samples of 2 drinks they make. My friend and I both got a refreshing gin cucumber drink. They give you a table number then you head to the back room to place your food order and sit down. We ordered the corn dogs, fried boudin, potato salad, blackened catfish, jambalaya, and the fried chicken and rice. Everything came out fresh and hot, and everything had a nice spice to it. Vic and Al's is an East Austin Cajun hotspot located off Manor Rd. There is onsite parking in the front and the back of the restaurant, although it can be pretty tight and you may need to end up doing street parking in the neighborhood south of Manor. The food here is great - Cajun flavors at its core, and arguably not as heavy and unhealthy as one would typically expect. I think it captures an Austin palette well in being a little "healthier" and not too heavy on the gut. Ended up trying a whole spread of the menu, and would recommend any of the salads, blackened catfish, gumbo, etouffe, and red rice and beans. The portion sizes are moderate so you also won't be leaving overly stuffed. It's mostly counter service and also gets pretty busy on a weekend or Friday night. Cousins, lean in and take a look at Vic and Al's. I met up with a girlfriend here for brunch and we had such a good time. I love the entrance and atmosphere from the ambience outside to inside with all the spices and herbs. Seeing this presentation, confirm that the food would be made fresh to order. Each day the menu may change slightly, however, be assure that the front desk support will provide you with all the details of why these items on the menu for the day I've been selected and how yummy they are. I ordered the blacken catfish and rice dish, which had a sprinkle of Black Eyed Peas and a side bowl of gumbo. Along with my food I ordered a nice cucumber hydration, which I'm not sure what it's called, but Travis can take care of you at the bar. I really enjoyed being able to just relax in this nice atmosphere and hang out with my friends. Interesting enough this is a family owned business and it's quite adorable. Additionally, I believe they have happy hour and they also have a different menu in the evening . This would be a great vibe after work on Monday, Wednesday and the close of a successful week on Friday. Even if you wanted to come and eat alone, the staff will take really good care of you and attend to all your needs while you visit. Everyone provided me with their names as they allowed us to select our seating and answered all of our questions regarding food. One person that particularly stood out was Travis the bartender. Not only did he allow us an opportunity to share with him what we would like to taste in our drink he made, and created quickly some samples and opportunities for us to have fresh samples of both a carrot base and a cucumber base drink. They were quite refreshing and I enjoy cold pressed drinks at home so this was right up my alley. Thank you again Travis for a great experience. These ingredients need to be shipped long distances, and as a result, they are usually picked before they are ripe to lengthen their lifespan, or they are frozen to prevent spoiling. On the other hand, restaurants like Vic & Al's get their food from local farms, so the food is picked at peak freshness and is bursting with flavors and vitamins. This is also why the food here doesn't taste processed, instead it is super fresh. Chicken Gumbo All the flavors in this dish could be tasted. Ingredients tasted within the dish (the base for the roux) are onion, green bell pepper, and garlic cloves. The chicken and tasso (which is comprised of a spicy smoked pork shoulder) are earthy and lean and hold the flavor of the roux. This gumbo also calls for sassafras rice. For those who don't know what sassafras is, sassafras leaves are ground into a powder called filé, which is used to thicken and flavor soups and gumbo. This dish ranks high on flavor and great for those who may not be able to eat the traditional seafood gumbo. I enjoyed my fried chicken po-boy, although I really hoped there'd be a catfish or shrimp po'boy option, or just more po-boy options in general. I feel like I always forget Vic & Al's is some of the city's best Cajun food. It is a sister restaurant to Patrizi's so you know it's going to be great quality food with low frills. The parking lot is tight but if you're lucky you can snag a spot. I like that they serve the food on the metal trays and is a casual place. You can pop in and know that you're in for a good meal. My Cajun husband found this place and we decided to give it a try. It's a little hard to locate with the main entrance facing the side of the building and no clues on the street. The inside though is very rustic and comfortable with a bar and plentiful tables to seat yourself at. Food is ordered through a kiosk and then brought out to your seat. The menu is very focused which I appreciate as it usually means attention is being paid to each crafted dish. The passionfruit tea is a nice way to start the meal, and those wanting something a bit harder will find a varied selection of cocktails available from the friendly barman. We tried several dishes; my favorites were the gumbo and the blackened catfish. Many attempt to fashion a delicious gumbo but only a few are successful, and this version touches on deep roots. The roux is well developed and gives this a hearty foundation supporting the rest of the dish. The catfish was perfectly cooked and well seasoned to be in harmony with the flaky and juicy filet. We received our table number then ordered drinks at the bar. I got the orange drink, which was refreshing and tasty. Next, we ordered our food. I got the blackened chicken po boy sandwich and gumbo. The chicken in the po boy was tender and delicious. It was accompanied with a sauce that was very flavorful. The sandwich bread was largely portioned so I ate about half and finished the chicken without it. The gumbo was also very good and it wasn't too spicy. While I was waiting in line to close out our tab, someone offered to close it out on their iPad, which was very accommodating. The staff was all friendly and helpful. We ordered the beignets to go and they did not disappoint. They were sweet and soft. I haven't had beignets like that since I have been in Louisiana. Vic & Al's is a unique quick service set up. Once you come in there is a host who will explain how everything works. I tried to ask a question as a first time guest but he was very adamant about finishing his spill and it wasn't so nice that he did that. The explanation was overwhelming to say the least. You first go to the bar start a tab, get a drink, order your food in the next room over and wait at your assigned numbered table for them to bring your food. You pay when leaving at the cashier. The service from the other employees and taste of the food made up for how things started off. The feel of the restaurant definitely gives home vibes in new Orleans. You have a patio option or indoor option to sit. It's a little snug of a fit in some seats indoors FYI. The dishes were great and flavorful. The chicken dish is more on the sweet side and the Jumbalaya is my recommendation if you want something more savory with more cajun flavor. The drinks are bright and fresh, and make you want more. Tip, if it's your 1st time get a sample! I love that they did that. The green drink is a refreshing delight with cucumber and melon flavor and the orange drink is more of a spunky feel with carrot and ginger flavor. All in all good place to try! A friend recommended Vic and Al's to me for a spot to go for Happy Hour. After Goolging it, of course, I was all in. I walked in and met Rob at the bar. He told me that they have been at their location for 5 years and have just recently expanded to have a full seating area for the restaurant. Once my friend showed up we got drinks and for the restaurant seating area. There, we ordered the corn dogs, gumbo, and bonding balls. Let me tell you now, those bonding balls are probably the best I've ever had or at least a close second. The gumbo was very flavorful and I was upset when I finally reached the bottom of the bowl. The corndogs were good with the house made mustard and ketchup. The cornbread breading was crispy yet fluffy and was packed full of flavor! I definitely recommend, it's a 8.5/10 for me!
