Just left the Vernon Diner and I will never return! When we got there it was very crowded but we only had to wait 10 minutes to be seated. Our waitress came over about 5 minutes later and we placed our order. Good start right? She brought us coffee and then we waited...and waited...and waited. Our breakfast order was not complicated, just poached eggs, hash and home fries. While we were waiting, we saw a number of people, who came in after us, eat and leave. After about 45 minutes of waiting, we asked our waitress to bring us a check for our coffee because we waited long enough. She apologized profusely and said she would bring the check. We never blame a waitress because we know it's not their fault. She returned without our check but with a message from the manager who said our order would be right out. We only agreed to stay because we felt bad for our waitress, she kept apologizing. We finally got our breakfast, guess what? It was wrong! I didn't get poached eggs, I got fried eggs which brought another apology. I was not going to wait again so I ate the breakfast and we got ready to leave. It took another 10 minutes to get our check and when we went to pay it at the register, the cashier was rude. Maybe because she was so busy but that is no excuse. We will NEVER return to this restaurant. And let me make one more note, there was a family of 5 sitting behind us that arrived 5 minutes after we did and were still sitting there with no meals, only water, when we left. We stopped by Vernon Diner on our way home from a weekend getaway. The place was super busy....but the service was not impaired. We had an attentive waitress. Our food was well cooked. I had the Cuban panini-it was really good. Pulled pork and slim cut slices of ham in my Cuban. My wife had a Gyro and enjoyed that as well. They have a large assortment of desserts, especially varying flavors of cheesecake. My wife had the Oreo cheesecake and said it was delicious. I had almond cookies which were fresh and tasty. Love the menu, what a selection! Generous portions, homemade soups, and a dessert case to rival any cheesecake chain or high-end bakery. The waitstaff situation is a little weird, and they seemed understaffed even when not busy, while an owner/manager seems to be perpetually standing at the entrance, but never supporting the staff with seating or checkout. The attention to detail paid to the to go orders has really gone down hill. Tonight I left minus one side. I know it was ordered because the guy that took my order repeated it to me to ensure it was correct. This is not the first time this has happened but it is the first time I've written a review. Perhaps if enough bad reviews are posted something will be done to ensure customers who order to go orders receive their complete order. Missing my New York Diner atmosphere while up in CT we tried Vernon's for breakfast. Mumbled greeting at the entrance by a sleepy hostess. Sat at a booth we preferred - she did not - which hadn't been cleared yet. The wait staff didn't glance our way once. No manager to direct the staff. The hostess was young, no smile, no sense of urgency, no clue, who didn't bring us or menus to the table. 5, 10 minutes went by while everyone around us placed orders and received their meals. I approached a staff member who tried to have the correct server help us out. Apparently our table wasn't under anyone's jurisdiction. Finally one guy took pity on us. We ordered our 2 eggs with rye toast and coffee. Passable - although I have to say the hash browns (which I said we didn't want but got) were really delicious. All in all an unpleasant dining experience. Vernon Diner needs better training with a shot of caffeine for everyone there. For now I'll stick to my local eateries. Like "Angelina's" in Enfield, CT. Five star staff and a really wonderful breakfast. Or "The Nautilus" in Larchmont, NY. Now that's a well run diner. read more

Saturday am, slightly long wait, was finally seated and the kids were antsy, and from the moment we were seated we were getting super attitude from the waitress, as if kids arent allowed to dine out?! and Im sorry, I get that kids are sometimes fiesty (and this was a total calm day so maybe she just didnt dig kids) and I get they sometimes stink but the moment I sense shade related to my kids you've already set the tone and there's really no coming back from that. It's the first time I got a burger there and I guess next time I ask for a cooked a little bit more because it was quite messy from not being cooked enough and we sat outside on the patio tables well let's just say that fat woman shouldn't sit on those the wrought-iron and well I couldn't sit all the way back in the chair because it would take 10 people to pull me up forward so I can eat and then it hurt my legs I was wearing shorts That's what I get for wanting to sit outside when it was nice. read more

I love diners and the Vernon Diner is special. The building is decorated and this time of the year they have plenty of Christmas decorations. The menu is huge and covers everything. I ordered meatloaf and there are so many pre-dishes and side dishes that there is enough food to feed an Army. Three large pieces of meatloaf were placed on the plate covered in mushroom gravy. After eating the large meal I had to try one of their delicious desserts and I chose the oreo cheesecake. OMG! Just pure sin. read more

I went to Vernon Diner twice in one week... never had I done that with any other restaurant! First was dinner. The restaurant was busy but the hostess was very welcoming and was able to seat us quickly. Not soon after, our waitress, Jenna came over with waters and a friendly greeting. She gave us just enough time to read the very long menu.its hard to choose so we made her wait but she would check in so we never waited for her. Our food was made to order and came out in a reasonable amount of time. I had the Monte Cristo which was the perfect especially when I wasn't sure if I wanted breakfast or dinner, Great sized portion and delicious! My husband got the omelette with hash and ate every bit. We were offered dessert but opted to take home a slice of the Peanut butter cheesecake..DROOL! My 2nd time that week was breakfast on a very busy Sat. Again, quick friendly service all around. The food took a little longer but it was to be expected. Our waiter stayed attentive and kept my coffee full while we waited. My so. Got the apple waffle,,, looked like dessert and it was excellent. People like this place and I always think the food is subpar, the service is fair and it is very pricy. Not worth it. For example! I asked for cheese on fries thinking I would get liquid cheese on top of my fries... nope. They melted a slice of american cheese on top of my fries. What?! Not much to say other than it has a typical diner feel, customer service is good, waitresses are almost always on top of everything. I was visiting a friend in CT and we ordered from here for breakfast via Grubhub (took quite a while to arrive). My friend ordered blueberry pancakes & I got the banana pancakes. We also ordered an egg with home fries & toast (never received this), and a slice of lemon coconut cake for later. I called about the missing items & they didn't offer to send them, just said that they were very busy and would "try to refund something." I didn't have a great deal of confidence in them getting around to that so I just contacted Grubhub to refund the missing items. As for the pancakes, I think my friend enjoyed hers, I wasn't a big fan of mine so only ate some of it. They were a bit stingy with the butter & syrup included. The cake was just ok as well. This place use to be awesome, but has gone way downhill over the years (change in owners?). On my last visit I ordered a cheeseburger as I usually do and when it came out there was maybe a few shreds of cheese on it, so few I didn't think there was cheese on it, and the wait staff are inattentive at best and were very rude. It still looks exactly the same on the inside as it has after the renovations a few years ago, but they need a whole new crew (kitchen, wait, and management) if they're going to continue to survive.
