I'm giving for stars because of all the vegetarian / vegan options. My meal personally was on the bad side, but perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing. The elote was average with a big chunk of cheese on top versus the normal sprinkle of cojita. I ordered the veggie enchiladas as my main dish and was extremely disappointed. I should have asked what veggies are in it...broccoli and GREEN BEANS! That was it. If you're into green bean enchiladas this is for you. I wasn't. It's also not really an enchilada. Verde serves up local ingredients into Hawaiian-Mex offerings. The flavors were too subdued, the prices too high, and the quality of fish too low for a higher rating. Pros are good service, nice seating, and diversity of food offerings. Might be worth a visit but try the fish market down the street instead. read more

We recently spent our honeymoon in Kauai and was looking for a place to eat that was open later than 9PM after coming back late from a trip to the beach. This. Place. My husband ordered the shrimp tacos - only slightly disappointing because there were 3 tiny shrimp on each huge taco, but definitely great flavor! I ordered the ultimate chicken tacos which were full of delicious flavors and textures. I could only eat one but I ate the other one cold the next day and it was still so so good. We decided to try the stuffed sopapilla because.. what? Um, everyone must try the stuffed sopapilla. Seriously. If you go there, you have to try it. These people don't know how to handle large crowds, and if the kitchen gets backed up with a big table order you have to literally wait for 1 hours to get your food. Also if you add the wait time of 1 hour, this place begin to suck eggs. Avoid dinner time with large tables. We had a very bad experience with this place for dinner. The lunch time was great. The food was quite good. The constant table shuffling and chair pulling noise is such a nuisance, it hurts your ears. Also your drinks take forever to come and it very diluted... Arrived to Kauai airport and had a few hours until our condo was ready. We liked the ambiance (laid back vibe). My wife ordered a wet vegetarian burrito and I got the triple stacked vegetarian enchilada. Presentation was fantastic. Food was great...we live in SoCal so we're spoiled with Mexican food. Overpriced for cheap nasty small portions! I am originally from Arizona and I feel like Arizona has a great Mexican food restaurant seen and I wanted to try verity for a long time and I heard from people that it was pretty good. I ordered the shrimp taco combo and chips and guacamole. That came to almost $40 and luckily I wasn't with anybody after getting home and taking a bite into my shrimp taco eyes and realize that it had only two very small pieces of shrimp on it and it was not that good. So looks are deceiving! I have to be brutally honest when it comes to Mexican food! I see that Verde has a great star rating and it could be for food with meat in it. Now that I'm vegan i have a love for veggies with good flavor... Verde missed the mark, big time! Ordered vegan tacos, rice, beans and the verde burrito. Burro and taco had the same guts except the burro had potato included which consisted of broccoli, green beans, lettuce and pico(mostly tomato) veggies tasted like it came from the freezer not seasoned or cooked with onions. Normally don't tell someone how to cook the food but again ima Mexicano and we cook just about everything with onions it adds flavor , some cilantro could help, shoot even some onion salt , garlic salt.... something!! I have to say the only thing that was good was the beer. Even the house Margarita wasn't a real Margarita it was fresh squeezed oranges a tequila liqueur which is pretty much a tequila sunrise...smh! Decent food, but it was very cold inside so I went and hugged my gf to keep her warm. I was talking to her, and bouncing to the music, but then the bartender came over and told me that it looked very bad and there were children around. I was confused at first. But then she said something about twerking. Number 1, I'm flattered you'd think anything I did could be considered twerking because I assure you that I cannot. I'm not talented enough for that. Number 2, you're lucky that I'm a chiropractor and also launching a company on this exact topic! When people are discouraged from moving, ailments and pain increases. Degeneration increases with lack of movement. A lot of why people don't move is due to social stigmas about what is appropriate movement and what isn't. They are afraid to move because people like you tell them they shouldn't. So this is the point of the negative review. When you are actively encouraging people to stop behaving in healthy ways, then you are impacting their health negatively. I'm sorry my hugging and bending my knees bothered you, but in this case you should be ashamed that your personal negative movement choices, your negative health choices, are being pushed on someone else's lifestyle, using (wtf) children on their cell phone as an excuse to stop me from bending my knees and flexing my hips after a full day of driving? Food was good. Service was great. Ambiance was not what I expected. it is not a nice sit down place. It is small restaurant and I would more so want to take the food to go. I don't know why the reviews were so high. I mean it was not bad food to say the least, but I was expecting more with such high reviews. It was lovely to start off with some free tasty chips and salsa. I ordered the veggie sopapilla and my husband got the enchiladas. Both were fine. I am a hard critic being from Chicago where Mexican food is abundant but if you are in Kauai and want Mexican this is definitely a place to check out. We're from Texas, this is not Tex-Mex... more California style. Very good salsa with the right amount of bite! However, the chips are to thick... but are at least fresh & crispy. Guacamole was definitely not fresh-made, cheap store brand like. Steak and shrimp fajitas: steak was well done, not pink in the middle... definitely not flank steak as fajita meat is supposed to be. CAUTION-UNCLEAN!!!! Very few things ever warrant a one star BUT... One of the chefs kept picking up his phone, texting and making phone calls with gloves on, then would put it down and immediately touch the food he was making for us without changing gloves. Who knows what is on that phone!!! Think of it... He uses the bathroom while watching YouTube and then wipes his butt, touching his phone to set it down BEFORE he washes his hands. This was not the greatest Mexican place I've ever been to, personally. But just for a quick bite, it was overall decent. The customer service was great but the food and prices wasn't what I was expecting. My boyfriend and I got nachos and beef burrito with rice and beans and li hing mui margarita. The nachos wasn't as loaded as we are used to. It was pretty basic nachos, with meat, cheese, guacamole, and sour cream. And it wasn't as big as we thought it was when our waiter estimated the size to us. However, it was still delicious in itself. The burrito with rice and beans was dry and not as juicy as I thought it was going to be. The beef was a little tough and the rice was a little hard and dry. I also didn't expect to have to pay extra to add rice and beans since I'm already used to having it come with my burrito; that kind of threw me off. And lastly the margarita tasted splendid and refreshing however, I didn't quite taste my tequila in it. But I would definitely have another margarita if offered the chance. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere & mood of this place but would have enjoyed it a little more if the food was to my liking. But then again some places are different than others and Im just writing my experiences an. If I could I would rate them a 3 1/2 stars. read more

This is by far the best Tex-Mex, New Mexican Cuisine That is here in Kaua'i. This place is nestled in the SafeWay Shopping Center right by SubWay and Dominos Pizza! The food is authentic delicious and amazing. They use the freshest Island's produce and their meats come straight from Kaua'i. In fact all their products come directly from Kaua'i with the exception of the hatch chilies Which come directly from New Mexico! Come on down to Lihue and stop on over to Verde and enjoy their menu and get a cocktail! Ok so here's the deal. I'm from Arizona. We eat mexican food 7 times a week and twice on sunday. From food trucks, mexican American, texmex, home made and authentic restaurants which are almost on every corner. So I'm a pretty rough critic when it comes to mexican food. I also get this is Hawaii and mexican isn't really a thing here. I get what they are trying to do here and I can see why it's widely popular. However, they get a few things wrong. The guacamole is terrible. It taste like pre-made garbage from a grocery store or a bad recipe off the foodtv network. It's easy to make great fresh guacamole even table side. do some research and figure it out. Chips are good. The salsa also tastes like a jar of pre-made salsa. Do the homework and make some awesome fresh salsa! Experiment and try it out on your friends everyone loves salsa. It's too tomato "ketchupy" consistency for me and my wife. Fresh vegetavles, where we're they? Margaritas are my all time favorite drink. The house margarita... I don't even know what to say about this... stop it's terrible. Whatever mix your using is nasty and has a bad seltzer like after taste. I had the garlic shrimp tacos and fresh Ahi tacos. The shrimp again felt like it was pre-made from a package. Personally would have liked to see the Ahi seared on the edge and a sashimi red like center. The gray thing I ate was good tho. Service is on point. Staff is friendly. Not sure if this was just an off day or what but they messed up our order big time and didn't bring the last entree out until everyone else was almost finished eating. They gave someone shrimp instead of chicken and had to re do it. Then they said they were going to comp us that meal. Ya, I would hope they wouldn't charge us for their mistake! We went to their first location four years ago on our honeymoon and have been dreaming of it ever since. I'm happy to report that verde's second location has successfully avoided the pitfall that many second locations do when a popular restaurant expands to a new place. You know what I'm talking about... smaller portions, terrible service, inconsistent food quality... This is not the case at the Lihue verde!! Our meals were just as delicious as we remembered them four years ago in Kapaa. The riff on a Moscow mule that used ginger lemon kombucha instead of ginger beer... WHOA. So good. For entrees, we ordered the daily special fish tacos (that day was mahi mahi) and ahi tuna (seared) burrito. Just absolutely delicious. The hot tortilla chips and smoky salsa were a delicious touch to whet the palate before dinner as well Go to verde to eat local (they try to source as many ingredients as possible from the island) and you won't regret it!! read more
