I always love restaurants that are locally owned and use local produce!! The restaurant is owned by a single Mom, so another 'feel good!' Got there in time for happy hour and was pleased with my $5 margaritas. I'm from Texas and used to Tex-Mex, which it was not, but pretty good. I stopped by verde with a friend after going to the Kauai Museum. I love Mexican food/food in general so I was really excited to try a "hot and new" location. I ordered the chips and guacamole, a classic margarita, the blacked mahi tacos and the al pastor tacos. The chips and guacamole were so bland and disappointing. The guacamole was basically smooth and blended (no avocado chunks at all) and was an odd florescent green color. The chips rivaled the guacamole as one of the worst parts of the meal as the were essentially, in the words of my friend, a "plastic version of a corn chip". So therefore: APPETIZERS-1 Star The drink actually was pretty good. On the rocks with salt and real citrus. DRINK-3 Stars In terms of our mains the al pastor tacos stood out as the more flavorful...surprising considering the fact that it consisted of fewer ingredients. The fish tacos were a little gooey with too much mayo gunk and crispy shoe string potato topping. MAIN-2 Stars Waiter wasn't very attentive and I literally watched our food get cold from our table. Our food was cold when we got it. SERVICE-2 Stars I promise I would not write a bad review had the food actually been mildly good. Had the Mahi tacos. Cut down the Aioli!!! Ridiculous amount of this sauce made these inedible. Very definition of overdoing a good thing. Everything else was fine. Enjoyed the special tortillas. When I heard about Verde opening in Lihue, I was very excited. Not that it's a far drive to their other location (I live in that zip code) but it gives Lihue more options it deserves. It's also conveniently located in Hokulei Village! Their brand new addition opened today, September 1st! The space is quadruple the size of their original location, which means more patrons are able to get their fill of delicious salsa, and New Mexican style cuisine. Can't really go wrong with anything on the menu, but if I had to make a recommendation, I'd say the carne adovada stuffed sopapillas! read more

Our favorite fancy taqueria on the island. We bring all our visitors here. Can't wait for the Lihue branch to open & save us some serious drive time. The nachos are fantastic, a whole meal in themselves (or share with five or six people)! My wife loves the taco salad; I swear by the quesadilla with ahi. But I don't think there's a bad dish in the house. Their house tea is delightful if a tad sweet. And save room for the Mexican chocolate cheesecake. Update: The Lihue branch opened & the Kapa'a location closed. The new location is at least as good, and we come here regularly. They recently started serving chiles rellenos, one of the best versions I've ever had. They manage to keep the batter light and slightly crispy, which is great. read more

I stopped here for tacos before heading to the airport. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon and their were 3 tables and a couple people at the bar. I was seated by a young man and waited for a server. Several people passed by me and I waited quite awhile before being acknowledged. I ordered the El Pastor Tacos and a side of sour cream. I was served chips and salsa as well. The tacos were good and of good proportion. Rice and beans can be added, but I didn't notice that and wasn't offered the option when placing my order. Like I said, the portions were of good size, so it was okay. The salsa is very tomato pasty, but had some flavor. I travel to Kaua'i quite a bit and live in New Mexico, so I was excited to give this place a try. Overall, it was okay. This is the first place we tried after landing based off the overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews. I was also surprised to find that it's a chain here too! Our seating was a bit cramped for a table of 7 so it made the humidity more noticeable. As we waited for our order of nachos, ahi Tuna and mahi mahi tacos, we were served fresh chips and salsa, which were very flavorful and garlicky. The nachos were fairly typical but the ahi Tuna taco was delicious! The fish was tender and moist and paired well with the crunchy toppings. The mahi mahi taco tasted a bit over seasoned and it was doused in sauce, so it was dripping as I ate. One order of tacos (2 tacos) can easily serve 2 people, since each one is so full. I advise eating a bit of the taco with a fork to make the rest of it easier to pick up and eat. read more

Restaurants, where one can get relatively healthy food with fresh veggies and without animal protein, are horrifyingly scarce on Kauai. One extra star for at least attempting to offer vegan tacos. However it is sad that they show a 1970s level of nutritional understanding when it comes to vegan meals. Why do they think that only carnivores need protein? Why no beans in a vegan burrito?? Two tacos for $13 and no high protein ingredient? Are they trying to punish us? Had I wanted to line my arteries with saturated fat, nearly every entree on the menu has protein. Beef, chicken, pork, fish, seafood or cheese. But the vegan option lacks beans tofu or even mock meat like a soy protein. I had to order a side of beans and rice - Why? Why do you not offer nutritionally complete meals for vegans? Is it a slap in the face? Hatred or simple apathy? Beans guys! It's not that hard. Amazing food! The seafood tasted as if it were caught locally and the veggies (notably the avocado, lettuce, and tomatoes) were very fresh. Prices are a bit high (~$15/entree). In my opinion, the good service and enjoyable food are well worth the experience. read more

Absolutely THE BEST burrito I've ever had. I wouldn't think to do green beans or broccoli in a burrito but it was so fresh it worked. This place is so dang good! We had the vegan tacos with all veggies and the vegan crumbles tacos. Amazing! Fresh, local and perfectly cooked! I've never had crispy green beans and broccoli in a taco but now I'm a big fan! And the vegan crumbles are so delicious; they are not the over processed meat substitutes that everyone serves. Excuse me Verde, but did moving from sleepy Kapaa and putting in a fancy tortilla bar make you think your food was worthy of the prices you now charge?? I liked this restaurant when it was in Kapaa and felt it was a good value for the money not so now. First of all I do not like to stand up and order with the board or a QR code in front of me, requiring me to make a fast decision as people are lining up behind me. I would rather be seated and waited upon. I found the prices way too high for what they offer. Two tacos for 16 dollars, no sides like rice and beans, no chips and salsa (sure you can pay for them) and worst of all being CHARGED when you ask for salsa to put on your tacos. It is a CONDIMENT like mustard or ketchup for pete's sake. One that should not merit a fee .Give me a break. There are better places for Mexican food in Kauai with better prices and more to offer. I had to wait over 40 minutes beyond the time given for pick up. I stood in line with the many others who weren't even being greeted or acknowledged. Simply lacking in all aspects of a restaurant! Went there for lunch today. It took 22 minutes to get to the front of the order line. I ordered one burrito and one taco combo. It took 55 minutes to get our food after ordering. We were there 2 hours, for what we thought was going to be a quick lunch. It seems that they are much more focused on to go orders. Shrimp was fried to a very dark brown. Not very appetizing. Needless to say, we won't be back here anytime soon. read more
