Sorry, I just don't think this was passable Mexican food at all, and the strip mall aesthetic just made it worse. Skip it.

We were starved for 2 days at the grand Hyatt since they had no good vegetarian food and no good service. Got the triple stacked enchilada. Deliciously seasoned beef inside. Sauce was interesting...pretty thick and almost pasty. glad I got it on the side so it wouldn't make my tortillas soggy. Husband got the fish tacos. Fresh and sauce was good. Their free chips and salsa were also good, the salsa tasted great! I saw some people getting burritos and they looked amazing. If I have a chance to come back, I'd definitely get it again. Knocked a star off for slow service. They need more workers or a better way to order to go. ! We just went to verdè in Lihue! We have always had great service and food there when it was in Kapaa. But this was our first time At the Lihue location since Covid. I don't mind the counter service.. I like that they make you wash your hands before you sit down and they are following all the rules. But the FOOD AND SERVICE WERE TERRIBLE!!! First off we ordered the "special" tacos for my husband and they were literally a Tortilla with meat squished together. Nothing ELSE. It looked terrible and tasted worse. We also got the "regular" chicken tacos , they looked fine with a tortilla, chicken and Pico de gallo , but the chicken was ICE COLD! The kids nachos were like 10 chips with microwave cheese on top and the kids burrito was small and looked like my kids made it. We got food before we got our drinks (maybe because they didn't even bother to heat it up) Got our chips and salsa (that we have to pay for AFTER food, and drinks.. ) which btw the margaritas at the old location used to come in big beautiful margarita glasses.. this came in a skinny tall glass that was only %70 full ... I've never given a bad yelp review.. but I wish I knew this before going to this restaurant . We would have done better at Taco Bell... would have been way better . And that is saying a lot since we DO NOT EAT FAST FOOD ! I'm thinking the service is terrible because now that you pay (and tip) before you eat .. there's no reason to have good service? I did feel bad for the workers. They only one working the cash register was also the bartender and her line was out the door. She could have used some extra hands for sure! read more

Verde was a short distance from our Kapaa hotel, and we were looking forward to something slightly different than the Asian foods we had been eating nonstop while on Oahu and Kauai visiting family and friends. It's "Mexican" but I would certainly clarify that while the food was good, it's a clear modern spin on what you in the states consider Mexican food (whether that be street, tex mex, traditional, or plain hole in the wall). Some reviews describe longer lines for this sit down establishment, but since we arrived at 5:30pm it seems like we were on the early end of dining, as the crowds grew as we ate. That being said, service was brisk and efficient, and we received both our plates and the complimentary chips and salsa in record time. The seared ahi tacos were awesome as well as the fried shrimp tacos. I liked that both dishes had different identities, not using the exact same garnishes, sauce drizzles, and tastes. They were both unique dishes although they were both seafood tacos by definition. The rice and the beans were just meh to add on, and honestly by adding it, it was way too much food with the two oversized tacos for me. When I am home in Hawaii, seared ahi is my fav, and they definitely did a great job using fresh fish. I would recommend for your travels. The price tag dangles a little high but that's expected for this touristy area. read more

I did not enjoy much about this place In the first place. It was really overrated and I was extremely dissatisfied. They have a lot of room for improvement, but I do see potential in this place. The service at Verde is pretty decent, although they could make more room for tables (It was a 45 minute wait for a party of 6) and get another chef, because we were waiting around 1 hour and 15 minutes for our food, and as we got our entree, nearly everyone was gone. The food was pretty high quality, and really fancy. I recommend getting the fajitas, although the burritos are pretty good too. The food was quite filling, and they give you chips and salsa for and appetizer, but only your first dish is free. Any additional chips bought will cost you. The price was a bit high, but I say it was worth it, and overall a decent place, the only problem being the massive wait time when you are ordering your food. It can be really packed in there, usually from 5-6:30 PM. Verde was a decent place to eat overall, but I feel like there are better dining places in Hawaii. read more

Pretty good Mexican food. Had the smothered Verde burrito which was a good veggie option but not memorable, no standout flavors but solid taste. Also had the shrimp quesadilla which was super flavorful. Quesadillas can be kindof bland but the shrimp was cooked in a zesty sauce with peppers which gave it pops of flavor. A bit hidden in the strip mall, we enjoyed having dinner at verde. The complimentary chips and salsa were nice, and we decided on the taco combo and a quesadilla with chicken. I got two tacos, one with the vegan mix, which is made of mung beans and Tarot, and a chicken taco. Vegan mix was okay, but it seems overcooked and a bit too crunchy and overall very skimpy. It was just like a light smattering of a vegan mix on top of the lettuce in the taco. The chicken on the other hand was a nicely stuffed taco. If I came back I definitely would not get the vegan mix. The quesadilla with a nice size, and was filled with cheese and flavorful spiced chicken. The prices were maybe a touch high, but not ridiculous for Kauai. Verde also had a full bar, and we enjoyed some beers on tap including a Modelo and a local Island lager. read more

Came on a Tuesday and there was taco Tuesday. Yay. 3 tacos special. Ordered 3 drinks and a mule. The garlic shrimp burrito was ok, it's in the smaller side. The ahi burrito was good and also on the smaller side. The taco special was good. We asked for the red hot salsa. It took a while for us to get it. Overall I would give a 4 star. Then I see the bill, and there is a $2 dollar charge for the tiny amount of hot sauce. Wow. And there is 3.5% credit card fee. That took the 1 star and it's 3 stars for overall rating. read more

Obsessed. Moving here from San Diego a few years ago it is very difficult to find tasty Mexican Food on Island. We were so pleasantly surprised by how amazing the food is here. I highly recommend it. What an awesome Mexican food spot on the island! We were staying at the Grand Hyatt but decided to check this joint out in Lihue because of the holiday. Came here for cinco de mayo and what better way to celebrate the top shelf margaritas, chips and guac, enchiladas, and tacos. They use 100% grass fed Kauai beef and it was so tender and tasting on point. Service was also on point, we were greeted right away and even had 2 servers helping us. We finished the night with Churro fries! Omg I needed a wheelbarrow to take me home in but hey that's what vacation is for right? Overall I would say you should definitely come here, get the top shelf margarita, have an enchilada and finish with churro. It was that good. read more

We were looking for a place for a late lunch and Verde didn't close early like some of the other places, so we gave them a chance. Friendly greeting, we sat at the bar, the cold AC hitting me, and it felt good. We ordered house margaritas and they were pretty good, not as strong as what we're use to, but good flavor. I ordered a chicken burrito, the partner had the carne. Both were good sized but I feel mine was the better of the two. The only problem, which I found is one on the islands, is that there's no decent rice and beans that come with. Other than that, our meals hit the spot. Our server was friendly, and they became very busy as we ate our lunch. Verde is worth checking out. read more

Verde was the best Mexican food we had on the island of Kauai. It was so good that we went multiple times during our week here! The burritos are probably the best thing on the menu, and the service was very good too. My wife got a margarita which was not very good but the food made up for it. The burritos get kinda messy so it ends up needing a knife and fork FYI. Also, the burritos are huge so consider splitting it with someone cause we took half home and it didn't taste as good warmed up the next day. read more

Came right before 5PM for Friday night dinner. It was a good time to arrive, for the smaller sized restaurant filled up quickly. I ordered the mangorita which was delicious and fairly strong. The plum powder on the rim was delicious. Also ordered the market price fish taco (15$ when I ordered): chose mahi over the ahi. The fish was cooked perfectly, but I couldn't taste the seasoning if there was any. But it was crispy and added a great texture. The tortilla was disappointing and bland, while a good tortilla can add so much flavor and elevate the dish even more. The combination of the things I described led the taco to taste "healthy" if you know what I mean. Definitely would return, but might try something different next time. read more

While a little leeway must be given for Mexican food on the island of Kauai, this place sadly disappoints. I was really looking forward to eating here and was really hoping to like the food. Unfortunately the flavors were just a little bit off -- watered down and bland. However it was obvious that the ingredients were fresh. The prices are moderately expensive ($15-20 per dish) as is to be expected in a place that caters mainly to tourists. I was a little disappointed by the fact that they charge extra for everything. Hot sauce, extra salsa, or beans and rice with your taco or burrito are all extra. They do provide chips and salsa "on the house" but the salsa almost tasted like marinara sauce. The drinks were solid and seemed more reasonably priced than other good restaurants in the area. The location is in a strip mall and the decor is modern minimalist. The dining room seemed clean. We sat at the bar and the place was packed - obviously they are doing well and seem to be rated as one of the best Mexican places on the island. The bartender/server was polite and clearly cared that we were there, but she was stretched too thin and could not provide timely service. The bathroom was not the cleanest, but not filthy. There also seems to be bug infestation in the bathroom which was obviously off putting. Was hoping to return here if the food was good - by we were disappointed and will not be back. read more

Ah-mazing! Tiny place in a strip mall that we were kind of scared to stumble upon. But so so glad we did. We're from Southern California, so we didn't know what to expect trying to find Mexican food in Kauai, but this place has it down pat and keeps the island touches. I was going back and forth a lot, but so happy I settled on this dish. So flavorful and so filling. They were HUGE and the ahi was perfectly seared. Husband got a burrito, one friend got the sopapillas, and the other got the shrimp quesadilla. We were all so happy with what we had ordered no one wanted to share with anyone else. We also order guacamole for the table, which when a bit more salt was added, really hit the spot. Such a great little place and extremely helpful and nice staff. Came here with my sister after shopping in Kapaa and asked our friend who lives on the island what was close and good and she said to go to Verde. Turns out it was perfect for what we wanted which was something quick and light since we were way past lunch. Verde is located in a very obscure shopping center called Kapaa with a bunch of odd stores around a Big Save Market. It's a small little spot with a clean interior and mini bar with different beers on tap and and some hard alcohol options, mostly tequilas for their margarita options. They also have non alcoholic option such as pink lemonade and an aqua fresca which is locally made by Ki Organics on Kauai. Menu is very simple and caters more to the Island flavors. They have tostadas, taco salads, Quesadillas and a bunch of tacos. They only have one real vegan item on the menu their veggie tacos but I am sure you can modify other items on the order to your specifics. They also have sopapillas which come in different meats and a veggie version. I had the veggie tacos and they were good. The tortillas were fresh and filled with a medley of veggies and chipotle with pico de gallo. You can add rice and beans for an extra $2.50. The ice tea was very unique and was very enjoyable. I would have tried their house margarita with jalapenos but it was not happy hour time for me so I went with the tea. The prices are a bit much even for Hawaii. The vegan tacos which just had two were $14 and and $2.50 extra for the rice and beans. The tea was $5. They also only give you 1 bowl of chips with salsa and charge for more. I would not go out of my way to come to this spot but it was perfect when in town and needing a spot to grab a bite. read more
