After a very long day training, we needed dinner but opted to check out the hotel restaurant. As expected, prices were higher than some of the neighboring establishments, but you pay for convenience. We both ordered the half portion of the orange miso salmon and while the sauce was delicious, the vegetables were completely bland and lacked even enough salt. Dinner was ok. Service was ok. The Ventanas Restaurant & Bar at the Westin Pasadena is the definition of a "captive audience" hotel spot--clean and functional, but missing the mark where it actually counts. If you're looking for a reason to stay in the hotel for dinner, this isn't it. Ambiance & Service The interior is perfectly clean but entirely unremarkable. It lacks the character you'd expect from a Pasadena establishment, feeling more like a generic transit lounge than a destination. The bar area is equally "meh"--fine for a quick seat, but not exactly a place where you'd want to settle in. Service was the biggest letdown; the staff needs to be far more responsive, as the pace was sluggish and lacked any real sense of hospitality. Food & Drink The menu was a series of disappointments: * Availability: They were out of both the salmon and the wings, which were the top two choices. Being out of staples like these is a poor look for a Westin-brand kitchen. * The Tacos: Absolute disaster. The meat had a funky, off-putting taste and the overall execution was awful. Avoid these at all costs. * The Bourbon: Surprisingly, this was the highlight of the night. The bourbon was fine, though it's hard to mess up a pour once you actually get someone's attention to order it. Verdict: Unless you are physically unable to walk a few blocks into Old Town Pasadena, keep moving. The lack of basic menu items, subpar service, and questionable meat quality make this a hard pass. I did appreciate the anchovies on top. * Scallops with saffron and lemon (2/5) were fishy in the way that old seafood is fishy. No real sear, rubbery texture, disappointing. * Setting (1/5) was SO loud. With a dozen people at the bar, even sitting alllll the way against the far back wall, it sounded like there were 50 or more. I walked up toward them as I was leaving and their voices were not especially loud. It was as if the acoustics amplified the sound. Absolutely miserable. We had booked to stay here after a long drive relocating our son from San Jose to LA and we're looking forward to chilling out over a few drinks and nice meal at the restaurant. Restaurant was virtually empty but it was a Monday evening. Ordered drinks. Bar tender got my husband's drink order wrong, lime rather than the lemon he asked for, and when my husband pointed it out, asked if he wanted it made fresh, which he did, as he'd even seen him squeeze the lime into the drink. He hates lime. After that bar tender disappeared and only reappeared when he wanted us to pay our check as he was going off shift. We finished our drinks and are looking to get another before ordering food. No replacement bartender. Then he finally comes and, despite seeing us sitting there at the bar with empty glasses, proceeds to wash dishes and empty the dishwasher. Had to finally call him over and ask if we could get another drink. There seemed to be a lot of staff around but mostly stayed in the back and seemed totally inattentive. We were so fed up by this stage and worried if they were screwing up so badly over a few drinks, what the food would be like, so headed elsewhere to eat. read more

Our breakfast was complimentary due to our Marriott Platinum status but I can understand some folks saying it's pricey. An adult breakfast averaged $30 for food & coffee/tea before tax/tip. The food is mediocre at best, and the service was severely lacking. 3 of 5 of us had issues with our food. When the server brought my burger, he announced that it was well done, but I reminded him that I ordered medium well. He suggested that it must belong to my friend across the table, and that my mine was on its way out, but not only did she order the chimichurri steak instead of a burger, she asked for "medium" (not medium well or well done, just medium) Since he no longer knew which burger was mine, and neither belonged to my friend, he asked me to check them. So I had to cut them each in half to determine that neither was what I had ordered. But to avoid further inconvenience and confusion, I just kept one of the burgers that was well done. Her "medium" steak also came out well done. But none of us are in the habit of sending food back unless it's inedible. The only order we did return was the Poké bowl because the tuna came out brown and his colored, which is a classic sign of not being fresh. The friend who ordered this did not feel like it was safe to eat and opted for a quesadilla instead We should've called it a night but ordered dessert. Two of us ordered the banana Foster cheesecake, which lists Nutella in the description. The smallest cheesecake you've ever seen that was maybe the equivalent of four bites was presented to us. Other than the caramelized bananas, that cheesecake itself had no flavor whatsoever. There was no Nutella on it, so I assumed maybe I misread this in the description or mixed it up with a different item. It wasn't worth arguing about, but when the bill came, our server made no attempt to rectify all of these mixups. One of my other friends runs a successful restaurant so as a courtesy, he asked for a discount off of the bill for those of us who had mistakes. It tried to remove only the cost of a glass of wine for the steak mixup, but the rest of us who had an unsatisfactory order, didn't order wine, so he made no attempt to discount or compensate anything further. It was at this point that I asked to see the dessert menu again and point out that there was absolutely no Nutella on the cheesecake, and that if he wasn't willing to discount the entrées that he should at least be willing to discount the equivalent of a glass of wine, which is roughly the cost of the cheesecakes. At one point his comment to me was "well, I wrote all the orders down correctly." OK, if that's true, then why did we end up with two burgers when you didn't seem to recall that it was one burger and one steak? But regardless of what he wrote down, the kitchen didn't get it right. That is still not our problem. There were so many issues that it didn't even occur to me until we stood up from our seats that he never returned to fill our water glasses or to check on us during the meal. The only times he came over was when we had to call him over with an issue. For a high-end hotel in a nice part of town it's disappointing that they can get away with such terrible restaurant and quality. read more

Though they sounded wonderful on paper, chicken mole, hamachi aguachile (which seemed to be missing citrus and acid altogether), tofu garlic noodles, etc... were bland unto oblivion. Etc... Ordered the tacos, which claims to be filet mignon (NOT)- the tortillas were obviously heated in a microwave because they got hard after a couple of minutes. Also ordered the chicken & goat cheese pappardelle (sounds amazing, right!?), but the noodles were so soft & soggy!! And the chicken was charred along the bottom. This review is for the breakfast service. I was a hotel guest. The good: Speed of service, courteous service, presentation, cleanliness. Upon arrival at the restaurant after a night in the hotel, I was quickly greeted and seated. My order was taken quickly and a full pot of coffee was set on my table despite dining alone. My food came in good time but not too quick. It looked very nice on the plate and stayed together properly during cutting and eating. The restaurant serves an upscale evening service, so it has an especially nice ambiance for breakfast. There is a bar in the restaurant and an array of morning news shows were on, which was nice. My reservation on going to four stars is the price. Granted, it's a Westin, and it's Pasadena. But $20+ for a burrito, potatoes, coffee, and tip...when I've stayed at the hotel? There should be a daily breakfast voucher or a deep discount by showing one's room key. read more

Sorry but giving this place 3 stars would be a complete stretch. I had both breakfast and dinner here and was not pleased with either. The servers are nice but the food honestly is not good. I was mildly disappointed with breakfast but went for dinner because it was cold out. For breakfast I ordered avocado toast with a poached egg. Normally, avocado toast has the avocado smashed and lightly seasoned on the toast. This was just slices of avocado, with brown spots, thrown on top of toast and an egg on top of that. For dinner I had the tortilla soup which was thick and too spicy. Then, because it had the little super food symbol, I got the turkey avocado wrap. I was SO loaded with creamy saucy that it was almost inedible. I attached a photo of the sauce oozing out of the wrap with 1 bite. I was disappointed that it wasn't real turkey either. They took a piece of deli turkey and heated it then loaded the lettuce with some cream sauce all of which make it an unhealthy choice. The whole thing was SO greasy I ordered lemon water to try to not have a stomach ache a bit, even if I only ate 1/4 of the meal. Half way through dinner I regretted not having put on my coat and gone to any of the hundreds of restaurants nearby. read more

Our stay at the Westin also included complimentary breakfast at the Ventanas. Each room was given a $46 credit off the a la carte menu. Be warned - the bus boy will immediately begin pouring coffee and juice into your cups and glasses as soon as you are seated without explaining that each would cost you $5. Unless your body desperately needed the caffeine and sugar high, better to go next door for Starbucks instead. My husband and I sampled a good number of their breakfast entrees ($46 for got us 3 entrees per day x 2 days). Breakfast burrito, egg white tostada, avocado toast, chilaquiles, two customized omelettes - Everything was made to order - nothing fancy but solid options especially for complimentary. Would recommend their chilaquiles and avocado toast (the bread they used was glistening in butter - opposite of health but super yum). Service was extremely slow but there were only two main servers for the entire restaurant. They were helpful when they can. Overall not too bad for hotel breakfast. read more

The outside seating area has a gas fireplace and several heating lamps with seats well spaced apart and lights to make a beautiful ambiance. They have a nice menu that isn't too expensive. The downside is that service can be a bit slow. read more

Two different experiences here while staying at the Westin. One was room service, waiter was friendly and helpful, food was delicious , pepita crusted salmon with butternut squash and asparagus, really satisfying and tasty. The next experience was Sunday night, I walked to order dessert around 10 pm, there was a server doing prep work as I stood at the front podium , I thought it odd her not acknowledging me at all as she was about 15 feet away. By the third time she walked back to the kitchen and returned I said "hi" and she said "I'm off duty." No one else was around so I asked how I could find help and she said try the bar... it was such an ugly feeling to be invisible to her and to be treated like I was bothering her to ask for direction ... I've been a server and I would have just said "let me get someone to help you" it's easy :/ ... anyway I walked to the bar and bartender was helpful and explained they were changing their menu so no dessert was available. That part is fine and understandable but the encounter with the server with the dark long hair was disappointing. read more

So most of these are bland... they have a small menu that caters to the majority and with this being a Westin (fairly ritzy business hotel) those tastes often don't mesh well with mine. I have been eating their breakfast which is very good. I am a fan of poached eggs. And sauces. I stopped by for dinner on one day and ended up at the locale for happy hour. So inexpensive local brew with some wings(HOT HOT HOT) and a chicken quesadilla. Both were delicious and what what expected. The main thing that gets the stars is the people. I received excellent service every time I go from any and all the staff. Very friendly and attentive. Good at reading if you are alone with a book or are in a talkative mood. read more

This was where we ate breakfast during our stay at this hotel. Surprisingly, it wasn't that busy when we walked in each morning, but it wasn't empty either. Facts: * Both times, we were seated and given menus quickly. * On my first visit, I ordered their steel cut oatmeal and a latte. Both were excellent. The oatmeal was quite possibly the best I've ever had. * The waiter on our first visit didn't seem like the friendliest guy out there. He wasn't rude, per se, but he did come across as slightly curt. * On the second visit, I ordered the brioche french toast. This was also excellent and I thought it was cool how they gave me both the butter and syrup on a separate plate. A lot of places just go ahead and dump both on the plate. * The waiter on the second visit was a lot friendlier than the one we had on the first visit. He also left a coffee carafe at our table for us to refill our coffee cups as we pleased. * Both times, billing was a little confusing as they gave us the bill at our table and then basically disappeared. We ended up taking the bill to the front and paid there. * I checked-in on Yelp during both visits and was told, via the app, that I had a 15 percent discount I could use if I showed my phone to them. Both times, the discount was honored, no questions asked. * Prices aren't exactly cheap, but are not ridiculously expensive either. If you're lodging here at the Westin, definitely pay this place a visit for breakfast. You won't be disappointed. 4 stars read more

If you want to wait 25 mins to get a margarita or a glass of wine with the server walking past you not paying attention to you, then this place is for you! If you want mediocre (at best) food, while being at a 4-star resort, then check this spot out. Otherwise, go elsewhere, people, seriously. Don't waste your time, money, or patience. Came here for dinner after the Bulletproof conference, where I felt a bit special seeing the exclusive "Bulletproof Menu", which included a Bulletproof Margarita (made with Herradura, lime juice, jalapeño) but that's kinda where the special feeling stopped. When we first arrived, the restaurant was empty aside from a couple of tables and some people at the bar. Well, that didn't stop them from providing terrible service. After waiting for far too long, I finally went to the bar to order drinks. I was told "oh, I'll send the server over" aka I was back at square one. Hooray. I then flagged down a different server since apparently I had become invisible to our own server. We finally got our margaritas which were beyond salty -- tasted like I was drinking ocean water, so they had to be sent them back and remade. Another 30mins later, we FINALLY got our margaritas; or perhaps I should say jalapeño juice. Seriously they were so spicy I couldn't even drink it -- and I like spice. The manager came over and apologized profusely and had them remade and comp'd. Which yay for that, but I still would've preferred better service and good margaritas than getting them comp'd. As far as the food, it was incredibly bland -- other than the fries; those are literally the only item that was satisfying. For dinner, I ordered the French onion soup, which definitely needed more seasoning/salt but I figured drinking a few sips of my ocean water margarita, I had enough salt in my system to account for the lack of flavor/salt in the soup so I just ate it bland. The Bulletproof Taco Salad was also bland; I mean the veggies were good but the beef was flavorless. At this point, we just ate the food 'cause we knew we wouldn't eat if we didn't eat what was already in front of us. I was incredibly disappointed with the service and food at a prestigious resort such as the Westin. And the fact that they were so understaffed on an evening where they had a VIP dinner for the Bulletproof conference (while being the host hotel as well) was beyond me.
