Cornbread, apple pie square, strawberry something
    Steve A.

I parked by the Scrabble sign at 35th and 81st. It was replaced. :( So I walked up to Northern Blvd. to get picked up by a friend and decided I'd grab a bite while waiting. Had the following: * Corn muffin / cornbread: I would call it Southern style. Not very sweet, the sort you'd dip in BBQ sauce (but none of that here). I prefer that to the sweeter, moister Northern style, but now you know. * Strawberry... dairy... something. Didn't put a name on it, just pointed to it and had it. Vanilla custard I think? Call it that. Absolutely wonderful. Two entire strawberries chopped on top. Plenty of custard below held in the crust. Delicious and plenty to it. * Apple pie square: Really cheap for how much you get! Plenty of apples in there, it's carb heavy but a nice loaded snack if you should like sweet apple pie squares. Service was friendly, personable, they forgot to ring up the apple pie but they got it right. You point, they'll pick, you take, you eat, you smile. Without busting your wallet. Bring a 10 or 20 and go to town in here!

Box optional. 1/2 LB of assorted butter cookies at $11.99 per LB.

Legitimately a great bakery with a variety of items from butter cookies to elephant ears to fresh rolls to bread to sandwiches to cakes, cupcakes, flans, custard, and gelatin. Oh yeah and they make and serve beverages as well. Service is quick and friendly with a smile. You can buy in bulk or in smaller quantities but good luck with deciding on how to keep your order small. CASH is king here so save your cards for another time. They open pretty early and close relatively late so be sure to take your time checking out all of the goods because there is a lot! Definitely check it out if you're anywhere nearby in the area.

Great little bakery in Jackson Heights. Very limited seating , but authentic place to grab a fresh pastry and coffee. The young women behind the counter are very nice and are very fast when the line starts to build up.

They do make one very good bread: the large round wholewheat. Funny thing is the small wholewheat is not as good.

I decided to try their Coconut Pandan cake which was enjoyable except for the jelly they had in the middle. The cake itself was pretty moist and the cream had a nice Pandan flavor. The Portuguese egg tart is what you would expect from one of these bakery's, very basic but it was nice and flaky. The milk tea was also okay, we asked for less sugar so it was not too sweet. We also got the sesame mochi to go and this was delicious! Definitely the best thing I bought from this bakery. The sesame paste was nice and strong but not too gritty and the mochi was super soft. I have to go back to grab another when I get the chance!

The prices for both sandwiches and bun have jumped up since January. I stopped here to get items for family and relatives/friends. Not impressed with their chicken sandwiches for they were hard and there is tendon in one other chicken sandwich has area that was not edible. The quality definitely not what it use to be here. There were lots of seats and tables for patrons to sit. Notice less foot traffic at this store.

A friend recommended it to me, and I've already ordered two birthday cakes from here. The tiramisu cake was absolutely delicious, honestly one of the best I've ever had. I didn't even know you could customize a tiramisu cake since it's usually served the traditional way, but they made it exactly how I wanted. As someone who loves tiramisu, this really stood out. I also ordered a strawberry shortcake, and it was just as impressive. The buttercream was so good , light, flavorful, and not overly sweet. Everyone loved it, and there wasn't a single slice left. The owner's son (I believe) was super helpful, he really takes the time to understand what you want and brings it to life perfectly. I've also tried their croissants, which are huge and delicious, and the hero bread is excellent too. Just a heads-up: they only accept cash.I'll definitely be ordering all my cakes from here moving forward!

It has actually been a while since I've had it and my friend made a special request specifically for strawberry shortcake for her 50th birthday. Du Bois for the first place that came to mind. Took a quick look online from pics from previous customers and was surprised to see the number of different designs they can do now. I picked this pink flower one that the owner made out of fondant and it was so pretty and exceeded my expectations. There was no additional charge at all. Back in the days....40 years ago, there was one style I remember getting and it was white cream with strawberries. Now there's so many you can pick from. The birthday girl was so happy with the design. I ordered a 20 person cake. There were 2 choices-round or sheet cake. Round is $60 which is what I opted for since I thought it looked prettier and the sheet cake is $50. The round cake actually came out very tall but gorgeous. Harder to cut too since it was taller. The owner was so nice. He custom made the top of the cake box to make sure the cake fit and doesn't get damaged. The fresh cream on the cake is so good. Not too sweet and very light. Perfect with the strawberries. The cake part was moist and yummy. I forgot how much I love this cake. All the nostalgic memories of eating it when I was younger came back. Honestly, I think it's even better than I remember. And the price was so reasonable for such a beautifully decorated cake.

Their hot milk tea is a cozy, comforting drink that warms the soul. Fay Da's milk tea may still hold the title for my favorite, but Yi Mei's version is a very close contender. The sponge cake? A pleasant surprise. Despite some folks claiming the bread isn't fresh, I've never really had a negative experience with them. But then again, I only get the sponge cake and I can't differentiate fresh vs not fresh between them (I'll just assume that if it's NOT fresh, I would have been able to tell). For ethnic places like Yi Mei, I don't put much weight on service standards. Comparing them to American restaurants would be like comparing apples to oranges. What truly matters is the authenticity and the food quality, and Yi Mei nails both. So, if you find yourself in the area with a rumbling stomach, swing by Yi Mei Bakery.
