Shocked that I've never reviewed Gian Piero before. I've come here for years and years whenever I need something special to bring to a holiday or gathering of friends - their rainbow cookies absolutely slap. Best in the neighborhood, I will die on this hill. This bakery is on the smaller side and gets busy especially around holidays like Easter and Christmas. It's a casual atmosphere, some folks do sit here and have coffee and a pastry especially when the weather is nice out. Prices are a little high but you get what you pay for. They have a variety of cookies, breads and special pastries for certain seasons like struffoli during Easter. If you're looking for a birthday cake that's really going to knock it out of the park, I would come here and trust these people with it. read more

I walked by this place all the time. Today, I was starving after my gym session, so I went inside to get a few cookies. The rainbow cookies are amazing. Went here with my bike group yesterday to go and try this place out for the first time. We had gotten different types of pastries to share together that it was absolutely delicious and sweet. I like this bakery a lot, especially it being difficult to still find authentic Italian bakeries anymore. However, I visited again recently and the first thing I saw was a 'B' health rating. I asked the girl what that was about to see if she would be honest and she told me she was a new employee so she is not sure. (I looked it up and was not pleased with some of the violations) She was very pleasant in trying to help me, but misunderstood half of what I was asking for. She also had to keep asking for help/clarification from another employee for each thing. I understand and had patience, but they should train employees better when employees are not around so they would not have to keep stopping to ask for clarification as they are helping customer. It took me triple the time to get my order. They were also missing half the usual items I typically order. The mini cannolis were pretty good too, although not the best I have had. I have been going to Gian Piero for years for their delicious pastries. Nothing is better after a nice family meal in Astoria than a nice cappuccino with a chocolate covered cannoli, slice of Napoleon cake or Italian cheesecake. I usually prefer to enjoy my goodies there and then grab a half pound of piniolis or rainbow cookies before I make the long trek back home. This is an updated review. This place gets a solid 4 stars because although I love their cannoli / rainbow cookies cake, the older Italian couple who own this place are so rude. Backtrack to thanksgiving day last year, I came to pickup a pie and as I was buying it, the owners kept saying we don't allow pets ... first off my golden retriever is an ESA dog and I told them she was a service dog. They weren't having it and literally yelling at me to leave her outside but I have seen plenty of times other people come with dogs. Anyways, they wanted to go back and forth with me so after buying the pie I made them give me a refund because their lack of empathy made me not want to eat their pie. This year, well Yesterday it was my dads birthday and he loves their cakes so I bought one ... granted this time I left my dog at home with the AC and although the older woman was there when I went, she did not even look at me. All the girls who work here are so nice! I bought the smallest cannoli / rainbow cookie cake which feeds like 6 to 8 people for $32. It is heaven! So although I still come here on occasion, to pick cookies or other delicious desserts, I avoid the owners at all costs. Ordered an 7 inch chocolate fudge cake with buttercream icing two days before I needed it. It was delicious and fresh and not overly sweet. The staff is always so efficient and pleasant. The only thing, triple check the spelling over the phone for your cake. She wrote Andrey instead of Andrew. The girl thankfully was able to change it when I picked it up. read more

While most of the old-time bakeries in Astoria have gone into a serious decline, Gian Piero still keeps its standards high. I came here earlier in the summer and found their chocolate mouse cake soft and fluffy. They have an old-world seating arrangement with maps of Italy and a nice open space with a TV on most times You can also see older Generation Astorians hanging around sipping coffee and smoking outside. Wanted to update my previous post just to reaffirm how this place has one of the best cannolis one can ask for. And the best part is that it's in my neighborhood. I personally am a huge fan of the mini cannolis but was gifted regular ones which were well done. The outer shell is baked perfectly and their filling is the perfect balance of sweet and creamy. You'll be a hit at parties if you gift these. The best bakery to exist the staff go above and beyond to ensure quality customer service, and amazing baked goods. From early in the morning 5-7AM getting everything made for the day. To then working till late in the afternoon to make sure everyone can be assisted. It's very local, and if you go enough times they'll remember you, and you'll come across other daily locals. The mini cream puffs are not bad, but $1 for each tiny piece seems too expensive. The 1 star I'm giving has to do with the rum cake. It tastes absolutely disgusting, like chemical thinner. And I threw up about 1.5 hours after eating it. I wonder what they put in the cake. read more

I have been passing by this bakery for years and telling myself I'm going to try it and I'm so glad I finally did. The service is friendly. The coffee is very very good. I got some cookies and there are also delicious. My favorite was the almond biscotti which was very crunchy with a natural almond taste to it appeared it was not overpowered with almond extract and if complimented my coffee the next morning very well. I also like their rainbow cookies although they are not my favorite. After I walked in, the place got crowded real fast. Terrific bakery. I didn't try everything I bought, and I paid over $50 for 2 pounds of assorted cookies and a box of canollis. I get them for my customers, and surely I will be back again. The service was very good. I didn't get the name of the gal who helped me, but she was efficient and clearly spoken, and she asked me if I wanted to include cookies with nuts (in case of allergies). The baker here changes it up every now and then with different pistachio filling items, I've tried the pistachio Cannoli's (amazing) pistachio Macaroons (amazing) and for breakfast the pistachio filled Croissant also amazing. What a unique bakery! While walking back to the train after dinner we see this bakery still open. There were no less than 10 men sitting out front enjoying themselves. We decide to stop in for a quick latte to take with us while we were walking. The bakery was full of awesome looking baked goodies and breads. While the latte's were less than stellar the almond biscotti that we also took with us was amazing! Tasted just like we had in Florence years ago. Wasn't the cheapest little bakery but then again you get what you pay for. We had 2 large lattes at $4 a piece and ordered 12 of the small almond biscotti. Total price was $17. The blonde woman who assisted us couldn't have been any nicer. She had a smile on her face from start to finish. I was please to leave a tip in the jar as she truly deserved it. read more

I was in the area so strolled in here on a whim to pick up a few desserts. True old-school Italian bakery with a ton of options for window shoppers of the pastry case variety, which is me in a nutshell. I also received some friendly service while contemplating my options. Their lobster tail was large and flaky, with a nice amount of filling. The chocolate-covered cannoli was delicious as well, with a crisp shell and rich ricotta innards. It would be on par with Veniero's in the East Village if they added chocolate cannoli filling! The cherry cheesecake was also nice and smooth, and not too dense. I really like want to like and support this place, but I can't. Baked goods are decent. But their atmosphere is always not very welcoming. Everytime I enter this place, people (other customers) just stare like I'm an alien, which is always uncomfortable. Especially for someone who's not caucasian like me. Secondly, they have a sign about mask outside. But they do nothing to enforce that to their regular patrons who often don't wear masks.
