I'm somewhat torn in writing this review. Prior to the pandemic I ate here with two friends, one who's a regular. We ordered the two item lunch special. Get the garlic pork she stressed. With Covid 19 last year it created opportunities for supporting small business owners with take out orders. So I started ordering online from Vanida. My online orders were handled with no problems until today. I placed three 2 item combo specials. I got an email confirmation. Picked up the orders. I unbagged them at home. Hey, where's the garlic pork? I made a mistake by not reading my email carefully. I paid for two item combo but only got one item. I called the restaurant. Where's my 2nd item? His explanation didn't make sense. Can you adjust the bill & credit my credit card? No he's unable because I placed an online order. He said he'll prepare the garlic pork. I made another trip to the restaurant. We talked again. I said he could have called me if the second item was missing on the online order. He explained again. I still didn't understand. He never apologized. I'm the customer. Isn't the customer always right? read more

Came here today for lunch - first time trying out Vanida. Had my eyes on the beef noodle soup but was pleasantly surprised they offered lunch specials. 2 item combo was like $15! What a deal. Tried the garlic pork and green curry. Delicious! Pork was flavorful and the cilantro lime sauce that came with it knocked it up a notch. Green curry had a small nice spice kick to it as well. I like to think that I'm highly credible in representing your average San Francisco resident who is rating a cuisine not related to my ethnicity. 1. I eat Thai food fairly regularly; maybe 1/3 of the time we do take-out (signal: we quite Thai food, as does a lot of SF). 2. My family has a regular "go-to" Thai restaurant that we rarely stray from (signal: not very adventurous; when we find a place that works, we stick to it.) 3. I've traveled to Thailand, most recently to Phuket, so I have an idea of what typical tourist-trappy-restaurant-Thai food tastes like (signal: we're not that boring, we do go to exotic places, see). My family of 4 includes 2 teenagers, have now eaten Vanida's Thai about maybe 5 times, and so I am happy to give them my meager thanks: 5 stars! First, let me tell you that I have no idea whether the lady who answers the phone is a good listener or not or how slow the service is. Our experience: 1. The food is very, very, very good though next time, I'm going to check off "Extra Hot" as they must have run out of Thai green chillies. The Green Curry today, when displayed in its magnificence on a white bowl, was clean-looking, the vegetables just-so-soft-but-not-mushy, the colors not-food-colored. I've never, ever, ever liked zucchini, gingerly picking it out and surreptitiously insinkerating it. Today's Green Curry with Tofu made me a zucchini-convert. And that tofu, not overly fried at all (though I wish there was an option on DoorDash ordering to customize this to be fully-soft-and-not-fried Tofu). My better half swears by the Penang Curry-lookalike, and she's been to Penang a lot (yes, yes, I know that's not in Thailand). My fussy teenagers insist on the Chicken Fried Rice, though one did say it was too sticky (whatever, eye roll). 2. Wait-time after ordering -- excellent! Usually never waited, and if so, maybe a couple of minutes for the waitress to finish tending to the tables. A friendly smile would probably get this joint all 5-stars. Honestly, I don't understand why people write reviews and say they loved the food, have no gripes, and then give it a measly 4-stars. Really? C'mon people, you are better than that. Mildred C from Washington, I'm looking at you. Uh huh. 3. Thai Hot sauce--the real deal. Ok, they probably buy this in bulk, but who cares that it's not prepared by crushing Thai prik-num peppers under the sultry feet of virgins dancing at the full moon rave? I mean, succulently hot but not too sweet. I asked my daughter to ask for two containers, and they gave me two appropriately hefty, nicely filled-out containers. The other Thai place my family always wants to order from: their hot sauce containers have shrunk over the past 20 years to the point I need a dropper to suck out the sauce. Finally, the owner sounds like she really cares. Check out the reviews. If it's bad, she'll write an appropriately tearful note, declaring that no one must have such an experience, ever; if it's good, she'll welcome them back and you can almost see her smiling. Appropriate to the culture in Thailand, she must have good review karma, so 5 stars it is! (Now you 4-star people who have no gripes at all and declare the food really good, for Pete's sake - no idea who Pete is, but for his sake, anyway - make it 5-stars; it's not like you have limited stars to give away on Yelp. Hey, Willie B from Mansion Flats, Sacramento, you drove here 2 hours to eat Thai food, right? Liked it, right? No service issues? I mean, c'mon, what's with the Sacramento crowd?). P.S. Came here for a Saturday lunch, and ordered the chicken pad Thai, beef pad see ew, and mango sticky rice. Fortunately I was able to meet the kind owner in the kitchen who shared his story of founding the restaurant. The food is really good especially if you're looking for a real spicy kick. My personal favorite was the pad see ew which wasn't just extremely salty like other Thai places I've been too. The ambience of the restaurant itself is very cozy and intimate making the food taste even better. Really tasty food..but I'll get the bummers out of the way first. First, I expected the Tom Yum soup to have noodles based on the picture I saw on here, but I guess I have to specify that? I only received it with veggies and even at that there were HARDLY any. About 2 mushrooms, one tomato, and one broccoli with onions is what I received. It was like 90% broth.. luckily the flavor of the broth made up for it. It was the perfect balance of sweet n' sour and served nice and hot. The papaya salad was BOMB DOT COM. The last papaya salad I ate ruined my whole appetite on it but the one from here is outta this world. The papaya wasn't so hard and chewy like some places and it was drenched in yummy sauce. I wish it was spicy since thats what I pressed when I ordered but it wasn't a big deal. My boyfriend really liked his pad thai! He's a pad thai snob and this one passed the test. He ate it so quick! I was able to sample some of their offerings at the farmers market on 37th ave and Ortega, here is what we sampled and how it faired chicken stix - 3 shish kebobs well marinated bright orange grilled chicken, flavorful yes, would I order this again, best to have this once received, each one I had was tender and juicy and well marinated, opt out of the wrapped white rice, just have the protein the mango salad - flavorful and light, sweetness overload on this dish, fine diced red onions, some of the mangoes diced were mashed but that's forgiven just on the taste alone, I would order this again I will have to visit these folks at the restaurant for more of their offerings, refreshing options that I could see on the menu, if you go to the farmers market definitely stop by and sample their offerings Food **** price $$ service **** helpful ambiance ? This is my go to Thai place in the Sunset. We order takeout and eat here regularly for at least 15 years. We've tried other nearby Thai places on Taraval, Irving, Ocean, and Westlake and like this the best. The food is consistently good and the service is great. I like that they can make the Thai tea with coconut milk, upon request, my being Lactose intolerant. The atmosphere is nice. Been meaning to write a review - you have to try this place if you're in the area or craving thai food! I've tried multiple dishes and they're all really good! I'd say the only so so items are the appetizers (portion is kind of small for the price, taste is average). The main dishes are a win everytime. Husband always gets pad see ew mild chicken and it's consistently delicious, flavorful, filling. I've tried multiple entrees and you can't go wrong with any of them (pad thai, rad nah, the noodle soups, curry). I will say medium is pretty spicy for me and I like spicy. I've been here a few times for lunch now and I get the Thai fried rice with chicken every time! Although the rice is a tiny bit mushy sometimes, it tastes good overall. My girlfriend gets different dishes each time: red curry with rice, tom yum soup, garlic pork, etc. All of them were delicious! Since all the restaurants only can take to go orders, I wanted to support local businesses in my neighborhood. I ordered two items of lunch plate. The place is very clean and hand sanitizers in the front wall and one more on the table for take out orders. Server was very friendly he was wearing a gloves to handle all the orders and gave me social distances. He even gave us a toilet paper. He said they had some from their warehouse. How kind is that! I ordered lunch combo Pad Thai and Tofu pik krig and mango sticky rice on the side. Boy, that was a big mistake. The food just look horrible; the pad Thai doesn't look good at all. Vanida has been my go-to Thai restaurant for the past 2 years and I've never had a complaint... until now. Unfortunately, I've noticed the quality of their food has gone down. I've provided photos for reference - there is little to no color in the noodles and the same would go for taste. The food was really plain and you could barely taste the sauce you normally would in a Pad Thai and it just doesn't taste the same anymore. I ALWAYS order the same 2 dishes.... So this isn't the first occurrence of low quality food, it has gradually gotten worse in the past few months. Background info: stars are given on how the food tasted between afternoon and evening services: the wait staff is ALWAYS good and professional. I have eaten here at least 20 times between 2021- 2023, including take out for. both afternoon and evening meals. the Lunch cooks seem to be a lot better than the evening cooks. BBQ chicken in evening is dry and over cooked, tofu is always too dry on both services, meat in general tends to be over cooked.
