On our way back from touring San Francisco State University, we were tired, hungry, and craving Thai food. I checked Yelp for nearby options, and Ocean Thai came up just eight (8) minutes away. Since they were still open, we decided to stop in on a whim. We were able to find parking directly in front of the restaurant, and since it was Sunday, parking was free. Upon entering, we were greeted right away. There was only one other couple dining, so there were plenty of open tables to choose from. The restaurant is very small and cozy. One interesting touch was that they also sell clothing and tote bags, which were displayed on a rack near the register. After being seated, we were given menus and water. We ordered the Pad See Ew, Pad Kee Mao, and Pineapple Fried Rice to share family-style. At first glance, the menu prices seemed very affordable compared to most Thai restaurants in the area. The portions were on the smaller side, but the food itself was tasty. My favorite dish was definitely the Pad See Ew. The biggest disappointment came when we received the bill. Based on the menu prices, I expected our total to be around $55-60. Instead, it came to $78. We later found out that the menu prices had not been updated and that the actual prices were higher. Unfortunately, our server never mentioned this when handing us the menus or when we placed our order. I understand that restaurants occasionally need to raise prices, but I believe it's only fair to let customers know if the printed menu no longer reflects what they'll actually be charged. A simple heads-up would have been appreciated and would have prevented an unpleasant surprise at the end of the meal. Overall, the food was decent, although the portions were quite small. However, the lack of transparency regarding the outdated menu prices left a negative impression. While I enjoyed the Pad See Ew, I value honest communication just as much as good food. Because of that experience, I don't plan on returning and unfortunately can't recommend Ocean Thai. read more

I did enjoy my tofu pad kee mao, though somehow I felt like they put a little *too* much thai green chili and I would've liked a better balance of the umami (fish sauce, soy, etc) rather than the dominance of the spiciness. Also didn't love the giant pieces of fried tofu that really did not soak in the sauce. Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of the por pia sod, but this dish was really not for me -- A rice paper sheet wrapped around egg, chinese sausage, tofu, and bean sprouts coated in a sweet and sour tamarind sauce and topped with crab and some kind of mustard? A lot was going on flavor wise, and I think both the texture of the rice paper (which felt more similar to a crepe) in combination with what ultimately tasted a lot like a pickle, really didn't jive with me. I think this restaurant was okay; the Thai Iced Tea was average, but on the expensive side. The Mango Sticky Rice was pretty good, but not $8 dollars good especially for the pay area. Lastly, the Panang Curry was pretty watery compared to other Thai Curry I had. Not a lot of foot traffic in this area, tho I did visit on a Sunday Night so maybe other nights it's a little more fun. My husband really enjoyed the Tom Kha--rich, comforting, and full of flavor. The green curry was also very good: fragrant, well-seasoned, and satisfying. We came in to a empty restaurant, I think the majority of their business is take out. That being said it was nice to have a quiet meal. The decor is dated in the best way. It really took me back a cup le of decades. The food was good an ND we basically lit inhaled it. My wife got the Pad Krapow, and I had something similar with eggplants. I came in on a Sunday evening and there weren't many people in the restaurant so I was seated right away. I ordered a pad Thai and it came out relatively quickly. The noodles were a good texture, it's just that they stir fried it in too much sauce. The taste was a little strong that I can to stop eating halfway through and basically add more noodles to my left overs in order to make it more mild. There are plenty of metered parking spots right outside of this mom and pop Thai restaurant. We were greeted by a friendly waitress upon entering the restaurant. They have an extensive menu. We ordered the chicken pad thai, seafood in claypot, sticky rice, and iced coffee. The food came out in a timely manner. The seafood in the claypot was kind of spicy, which added a nice kick to this dish. The chicken pad thai and the sticky rice were ok. The iced coffee had the right amount of sweetness to it. Consistently fresh and flavorful dishes. We've tried this place 3 times and it's become our go-to local Thai spot. It's much better than the fancy-pants one with a two hour waitlist, that I won't name. Usually pretty quiet in there but don't let the lack of customers throw you off. I ordered the Tom yum soup and tofu pad se ew with medium spice via Uber eats. I liked how you get the option to choose your spice level for pad se ew since normally pad se ew is not spicy. I really enjoyed the tofu pad se ew at medium spice, it was the perfect spice level for me and it was very flavorful. My only disappointment was that the portion is pretty small. It came in a small black takeout container. I finished the entire portion, but I usually have a small appetite and never finish my entire order of pad se ew, so I would say the portion size is quite small, but tasty. Our friend loved the Pad Kee Mao. And I had the gluten free Pad Thai. It was one of the better ones I've had. Not as flavorful as some of the other places but it was still a very solid version. One thing I appreciated was that it wasn't too sweet which is an issue at some places. The free soup that comes with the lunch special was also gluten free. It's a veggie broth type of soup. Pretty decent. They also had gluten free curries. I didn't ask what other gluten free options they had, but my impression was it went beyond Pad Thai and curries. There's metered parking. But if you're okay with walking a short distance, you can park in the neighborhood for free; just watch out for the hours on the signs. Service was good. Ambiance was normal. The red curry was good but does not come with rice. Based on the other reviews, especially of the lettuce packed pad kee Mao, I was skeptical of the portions. The Curry Duck had quite a few pieces of duck, could have used a few more red peppers and pieces of basil. My only complaint is that you have to order rice. Shouldn't that come with it??? Most thai places are so similar and thus unremarkable. Ocean Thai stood out for their sweet and spicy chicken (supposedly off menu but other yelpers have identified it too). Beef larb was excitingly spiced. They offered solid curry and eggplants. The large tv showing travel ads for thai resorts is entertaining and has planted seeds over lunch that a vacation to thailand might be in my near future! read more

Prawns Chao talay $21.95 6 shrimps with homemade sauce on a bed of rice noodles and steam broccoli and carrot slices on the side. The sauce is very tasty, on the oily side and the rice noodles came out in a a clump that couldn't be separated. They seemed to be premade then microwaved. The shrimp were fried and juicy. I forgot to ask it not to be spicy and it was. The dish was not hot in temperature. We order rice bowl $3.00 to temper the heat of the sauce. It was okay, came out hot. Healthy salmon $18.95 grilled salmon with mango sauce and salad. The fish was farmed raised and was fishy and not good, seemed old. The salad was ok. The restaurant is on the darker side with wall paper and wooden tables with white table clothes that has glass placed on top. The table clothes need to be washed and the walls need scrubbing. The decor needs to be improved. Old, tired and mismatched decor. A hole in the wall restaurant ambiance. The service is attentive. Overall I would get take out for the Prawn chao talay even though the rice noodles were bad. If i could give the rating for this dish it would be a 4 but overall a 3. read more

It pains me to write this, but the portion sizes have become ridiculous. I do not recommend ordering take out or you will be left severely disappointed. Ive tried to support them through the pandemic, but I don't think I can continue to support them for half an order at $13-14 an entree. Ocean Thai is an underrated spot! Love the food and love the service! My friends and I came to try this place on a random Tuesday night when it was raining. There was no one in the restaurant except us. Though we were the only ones, the staffs were really friendly, attentive, and gave us good recommendations on their menu! As a table, we ordered the Thai Fresh Garden Rolls which came with 8 pieces. There was chicken, shrimp, and vegetables inside. Dipping the roll with the sauce provided tasted phenomenal! It was fresh, sweet, and the sauce complimented the roll really well! I definitely would recommend this to others and would order this again! For my entrée, I got the Pad See Ew with chicken which also was delicious! The entrée was not too oily, and the noodles were made perfectly with the carrots, broccoli, and egg. If you are a lover of stir-fried wide noodles, this is the one to get! Overall, love this restaurant! I would definitely come here again! They are underrated and deserve more business!
