Was very hopeful walking in to Vanessa's for some good chinese comfort food. The menu had all the right stuff. The cashier made some recommendations and I ordered the fried pork and chive dumplings based on that. I also ordered the beef noodle soup. The food came out and looked good enough except for the dumplings being a bit on the oily side, so I started eating. Took that first bite of the chive and pork dumpling and was surprised that the fresh dumplings were only hot on the bottom where they were fried and the inside was still cold and the dumpling dough toward the top was not cooked through. As the restaurant had no customers when I came in and I was still the only one there, I let them know about the dumpling and asked them to make it right. They took the dumpling order back and in a few minutes came out with another order for me. As you can see from the photos, these dumplings were larger than the original ones and they seemed more greasy and overstuffed so that there was some liquid running down. One of the cooks came to ask about it and I said thank you but they just didn't look anything like the photo that is right there in the menu. The cashier then came over and had attitude. I explained about the dumpling dough being uncooked and she said that is how it is supposed to be. I have Chinese family and I've had dumplings routinely in life, no the dough is not supposed to be raw and mushy and the filling should not be cold. She agreed to give me a refund for the order but she was not apologetic at all and had a bad attitude. When I went to ask for verification of the refund she took out her phone and I don't know what she was doing with it. Unfortunately this wasnt the best experience. As for ambiance, the tables were cleared off, the tray I received my food on was super sticky. The beef noodle soup was nothing special but I liked it. They gave generous portions of everything and I generally enjoyed it. My wife & I are in Brooklyn and she's says oooh Vanessa's! Lets get a bag of frozen dumplings to take home for my boys. Oh yeah! We walk and and she nudges me, also lets get something to stay. Hmm.. I like the way you think! That's how she became Mrs. S., a girl after my own heart. I order a Hite beer on draft as well as Sesame pancakes stuffed with peking duck and their famous Pork and Chive dumplings. This is such a great place to eat some freshly fried food with a cold beer, nothing better than that combination. The bathroom is the true rock star! I like how they created art out of this space. They charge for hot chili oil, no where in flushing area or in the city they charge me for hot chili oil but this place do. Would I come back? Honestly, this is my new favorite dumpling spot. I found it while randomly walking through Williamsburg because I wanted some dessert from Martha's. But thankfully, I was really hungry and enters Vanessa's. Service: So incredibly quick. Both times that I've gone, I didn't have to wait more than 7min I think for my food-- and that's with a crowd. Food: I ordered the pork chive dumplings the first time and the second time I added the chicken dumplings. I'm obsessed with the chive dumplings: super flavorful and well seasoned. The chicken is good, but I'm biased to the pork. I added the hot oil the second time because of my love of spice as well as some kimchi. I'm deducting a star because I was too far away by the time I realized that my kimchi was not in the bag. But this doesn't take away from the food itself, just the precision of my order. I used to buy the frozen dumplings here - it was 50 dumplings for $15. Went back yesterday, thought the quantity went down, and after purchasing I realized that they now sell these dumplings at 25 pieces for $12-14!! That's a drastic cut in half for basically the same price. They have iPads to order up front now, plastic shields. Solid pan fried dumplings but their sesame pancakes suck. I got the peking duck sesame pancake and it was so cold and tough as if the sesame pancake had just been sitting there all day. When I decided to just eat the duck and cucumbers and not the pancake, I realized they gave me just duck skin. It was literally just the skin with no meat attached. My friend had the vegetable dumplings she did not finished them and threw them out. I've had better dumplings elsewhere. To top it off my fried killed a bug. Service was good. These are by far the best dumplings I have ever had. They are seasoned well and the sauce they serve with it is tasty. I could it this place daily. I tried the Williamsburg location this time, after really enjoying the original LES location. I got the dandan noodles again - but it felt like a completely different dish! The ones in LES were a lot spicier + flavorful, while this was more standard. Not a ton worse, but I definitely prefer the former experience. I wish I could give the place more stars. The dumplings are pretty good and for the price its worth it. The dumplings aren't too doughy. They pack flavor and are juicy. Nothing I hate more than dry doughy dumplings. The kitchen staff is made of all stars. They're making food quickly and getting it out there. The service on the other hand makes it tough to give a higher rating or even want to go back. Ordering in person there wasnt much of a line, but there is a line waiting to pick up food. Both people who ordered in person and drivers wait around for their order number to be called. Order numbers arent called even with bags sitting on the front desk. This often leaves customers receiving food that has probably gone cold. Cashiers are often on their phone and are agitated by customer questions. Answers aren't exactly clear either. While waiting I observed someone ask about what flavors of drinks they have. Only to be answered that theyre all good. After ordering the individual had their drink order completely forgotten about, when they went up to ask for it they were informed that they no longer have that flavor. Vanessa's offers a great variety of dumplings (fried or boiled) with various veggie or meat options. Nothing beats home cooked dumplings, but I'm inept in the art of dumpling making, so Vanessa's helps me get my fix. I'm partial to the pork and chive, but all the flavors are decent. I was taking a walk through Williamsburg and feeling a bit hungry when I saw this place. I remembered it being in a list of best places for cheap dumplings in a Time Out NY article and checked out the great reviews by fellow Yelpers, so I stepped in. I wasn't disappointed. I ordered two kinds of pan fried dumplings, pork & chive and chicken & basil. The pork & chive was yummy, but I really loved the chicken and basil. There are two kinds of sauce on the tables, both in used Sriracha bottles: a mild (black) sauce and a hot (red) sauce. I mixed the two together and was in dumpling heaven. Ordering is simple: you walk up to the cashier, tell the cashier what you want, pay, get your receipt, and then wait for them to call your number. I don't think I waited for longer than 2 minutes. And the dumplings will come to you piping hot. And the food is cheap. The pork & chive dumplings were only $2, and the chicken & basil were only $2.50. For less than $5 (with tax my whole bill was $4.90), I got a delicious & filling meal. I left feeling very happy. The staff were very good. The woman at the cash register was very friendly and gladly answered my questions. And, as I said previously, I got my food pretty quickly. The place is small, but cozy, and I can imagine that it gets very crowded during the lunch and dinner times. You'll probably be sitting with other fellow dumpling lovers on group tables. I also can imagine that they do a ton of take out business with the locals. I don't go to Williamsburg often (I went this time to check out the newly opened Domino Park, which will be the subject of a future review). A very great meal if you're in a hurry and want something quick/cheap! I've been to the other location in manhattan several times, but this was my first time in Williamsburg. A few things: the restaurant is dirty; tables are not cleaned off regularly, and the grease from the cooking transfers onto all the tables/floor. The bathroom is gross- I'd avoid it if possible! However, the food makes up for it. I only ordered the sesame pancake sandwich with beef ($4.95) at this location, but it was so delicious like always. Really bad experience unfortunately due to wait time, service and food quality. Wait: was approx 35 mins for a walk in order of two dumplings. No mention of wait when ordering, told to wait inside (so assume it's going to be 5 mins max). Told several times it was just coming out at about 15, 20, 25 minute mark. Service: short and rude when questioned about wait. At 25 min I asked if they could call it outside so I could sit with my friend and get out of the small, warm, crowded wait area. They didn't come out. Checked at 30 min and then at 35 so it was ready some time in between them. Order shoved at me like 35 mins is acceptable timeframe. Food: mixed dumplings (which is t on the menu), some with an unknown dark meat inside. Shrimp ones (what I ordered were more carrot and corn than the liquified shrimp. Flavor was ok. I kept hearing so many great things about Vanessa's dumpling house. On this particular day it felt like everyone was posting it on their feed so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. It's located in Williamsburg in between the L & M/J train. I went to the location at night, although it is small you won't pass it. For it to be pretty late into the evening the place was pretty busy. One of the girls behind the counter shit off the order machine because they were coming in so fast. Even the orders for there seemed lengthy. There was a wait which I expected with how busy the store was. I decided to try one item from almost every area of the menu except noodles. Let me just say it was all worth the fuss. With it being so busy everything was still just as delicious. I was trying to find the perfect place to buy dumplings and I definitely think this is it. It was my first time having bun and pancakes (Asian style) which was amazing. I see myself coming back here as a regular dipping my foot into other areas of the menu. Fine, they have quite a variety of dumplings (pan and boiled), vegetarian options and a few other items like pancakes, but they're operating on a limited /special menu right now because of covid but there's still lots of yummy options to choose from. It's called Dumpling House so just get the dumplings to start. Get the pan fried dumplings the boiled ones are smaller, as you can see in other people's pictures, and they just taste like mush. I had the chicken and shrimp pan-fried dumplings it comes with spicy sauce, scallions and a bunch of other little seasoning toppings packed with flavor - delicious! You can add this spicy sauce cseasoning mix to the other items on the menu for ~$2. I also got the combination boiled dumplings which comes with two pork two veggie two shrimp and two chicken (they will let you substitute the ones you don't want out for free, which is what I did). It's cooked to order so be prepared to wait for a little while. I went on a Wednesday and had to wait around 10 minutes for my food to be ready and they were pretty full. You can't eat inside yet, but they have some tables and a little makeshift sidewalk shack you can eat in. You can use your card to pay, and they have a restroom. Are these the best dumplings in New York City or that I've ever had in my life? No, but these are good, filling, reasonably priced and definitely a New York steal. Stop bye. read more

In general this spot was solid for cheap yet delicious dumplings! I would recommend if you are in the area. We got fried dumplings and wontons and definitely preferred the wontons in chili sauce (don't worry it's not that spicy). My friend preferred the dumplings so definitely try both to see which one you like more You can get a solid meal here for ~15$ and while they only have counter service they do have outdoor dining areas. It's super close domino park so you can always take your Togo food to the park! Overall in my opinion it lost a star because the dumplings weren't anything special but overall for the price I would still recommend! read more

I recently tried vanessas for lunch on a saturday at 2pm. I was pleasantly surprised by the short wait having heard so much of the same joints in manhattan. We ordered three different kinds of steamed dumplings, the spicy wontons, and hot and sour soup. I also had a honeydew milk boba tea. Overall the food was good, not great but also pretty awesome in terms of value. The sour and sour soup was utterly terrible but i would have had the dumplings again in the future... The problem was i am fairly certain i ended up getting food poisoning within a couple hours of eating. It ended up completely ruining my anniversary dinner that night and the next couple days. I dont know if it was the oil or the sauce or possibly the dumplings themselves but unfortunately it was pretty terrible. Normally this should give it 1 star but given its popularity and the fact that i was the only one who got sick at my table of four (i was the only one eating pork so maybe that was it) it seems unfair to rate them that low. read more

Their dumplings are good, especially the fried pork and chive ones ($1.75 for 4). The skin is on the thicker and chewier side of the spectrum. The filling is relatively stiffly seasoned with soy sauce. I'm a big fan of that combination, and I'll remain loyal to Vanessa's for them. Beware: their soy and vinegar dumpling sauce and sriracha sauces are very diluted and runny and will splash everywhere. Pork and mushroom fried buns (3 per order) was a new revelation. - Worse: This time, their sesame pancake sandwich did not deliver. Mind you, these are slices of a leavened 1"-thick pastry that's got to be more than a foot in diameter. However, the fillings of marinated pork, raw cilantro, and lightly pickled julienned carrots just didn't do it. - Service: I'm used to the brusque no-nonsense service at the good-ol' East Village 14th St location, so actually encountering good service was a pleasant surprise. read more

They don't exactly have the same items on their menu, as the other location as we really wanted duck soup but they didn't have it at this location. We ordered the following: - Szechuan beef noodle soup - pan fried pork dumplings - chili oil wontons - tofu spicy dan dan noodles - lemon tea - wonton soup The beef noodle soup was supposed to be spicy but it wasn't spicy at all. If anything we had to add extra chili sauce to flavour it. Once the chili oil was in, it was delicious. The chili oil wontons were pretty spicy. But the chili oil was lacking in flavour but the wontons did make up for it. The dan dan noodle surprisingly was pretty jam packed with noodles. But found that this was lacking in flavour. It was really spicy but no taste. As we got it as takeout we recooked it with some soy and added some flavoured chili oil. The wonton soup was delicious, definitely recommend that. Lemon tea was good but needed more ice. Overall it was good but not the same as the Manhattan location. read more

It's SO GOOD and the best part is that it's less than $5! Depending on your appetite this alone could be very filling. Most of the times I've come here I get 1 pork sesame pancake sandwich and a side order of kimchi. This usually fills me up until dinner time (if I have this for lunch). I of course also recommend getting the pork and chives dumplings. They are yummy and inexpensive as well. I think they are 4 for $2.00 pan fried and 8 for $4.00 boiled. I prefer the boiled. The chicken and corn soup is my jam!!! I love the soup from here and the kimchi is not so bad as well. It gets pretty packed here during lunch time and after work (6/7pm). There are seats in this location but you have to order your food first, take a number and wait for your food. No one brings the food to your tables. You will have to ask for Sriracha, it will not be given to you automatically. And if you ask for extra sauce I think you are charged 25cents per sauce. Overall the dumplings are good, the soups good, the sandwiches are good and the kimchi is always fresh and tasty. You can't go wrong here if you are looking for a cheap, tasty meal. read more
