We had the building rekeyed last year. Last week, we discovered the the front doors to our complex were not completely locking. He came in less than 24 hours and discovered that our door was leaking fluid, and that our striker was intalled in 1987. Replaced. First, let me say that I live in an apartment building in Sherman Oaks, California. As a result, I have had my door locks changed multiple times over the years. I've not had any complaints over the work done. However, my door has never "fully" closed easily. By this, I mean that the while the door would shut, it required pulling until you could feel a "click" to latch it. If you didn't concentrate on this, you would think your door was closed, when in actuality it could be pushed open. Recently, the locks in my building were again replaced and Jeff Bond, the owner of Van Nuys Lock & Key, showed up to do the job. He was on time, wore a mask, was courteous and did excellent work. He even made a 3rd key for me as a courtesy at my request. When Jeff left, I closed the door behind him and immediately noticed a clear, quick "click" to indicate that the door was shut completely. I know it sounds stupid, but I was ELATED by this. You have no idea how many times I previously ran back to my apartment to push on the door, just to make sure it was closed all the way. We've hired Jeff Bond of Van Nuys Lock and Key twice, and we recommend him for any locksmithing job you have. The first time the lock on our front door suddenly just came apart, and it's a mortise lock and more complex that a normal lock. Jeff was at our house within an hour and got our home secured in no time. Today I asked Jeff to re-key all the locks in our house and gates because we'd had a lot of work done on the house and the contractors had keys. Out of an abundance of caution I wanted all our locks re-keyed for security. I have not used Jeff's service, however, he had just finished working on my neighbor's house when my dog had got loose and I was trying to find him. He heard me yelling my dog's name and asked if he could help. He and the other man with him in the van took the time to drive around my neighborhood to help me. They even went to the next neighborhood over to see if they could find my dog there. Anyone who has that kind of community concern is definitely someone I would go to and trust their service. After a terrible experience with another locksmith Jeff was excellent. He was installed our keyless entry and it was the easiest experience I've had in a while. It was much needed. He even let us know our door needed to be shaved due to the recent weather we've been having causing the door to expand and shrink. ATTENTION FELLOW YELPERS!! By the time you get to this posting, it's likely you will have seen many locksmiths with 5-star ratings. You may have already spoken with a few and booked an appointment. That's what I did. The first call I made, the guy was with a customer and anxious to get off the phone. I offered to have him call me back but he said "no need" then got right back into "too busy to speak on the phone" mode again. For the next call, the guy quoted me a slightly better price than Mister "Too Busy to Talk" and while he didn't rush through the call, he was straight up business with no pleasantries or warmth to his voice, yet I did book him. However, after I few hours, his lack of friendliness got to me and I called back and cancelled. You YELPERS know what I'm talking about. Not a bad feeling as much as just not a good warm vibe - and yes, I realize I'm just looking for an honest, competent locksmith, not a lifetime friendship. However... When I called Van Nuys Lock & Key, the voice and demeanor on the other end was like a friend or relative with whom I have a good rapport. Sometimes when speaking with a service provider for the first time, you can get a sense that they understand exactly what you're looking for and they converse in a clear, logical and friendly manner. That's what I immediately got from Jeff. I am a bit of a cynic by nature, particularly when it comes to contracting service people into my home, however, every once in awhile, someone comes along who breaks the conventional mold of what you expect, versus what they deliver. Not unlike Liam Neeson, Jeff Bond has a particular set of skills that surpasses those of conventional ordinary mere mortal locksmiths. If there's anything less than a five-star Yelp review for Jeff, I couldn't find it. Now I know why. I'd give him 10 stars if it were an option. I called on him to re-key all of my locks. While he was here, I asked for a bid to do two others that I hadn't planned on changing. Clearly, he decided on the spot to give me a great price which was insanely more than fair. I don't know if it was because of the other six locks he was already doing or because that's just how he rolls. He's very smart and very funny and at the end of the day between all of the re-keyed locks and new keys, he delivered way more than I expected or asked for and charged much less than he could have. He even took the time to explain and demonstrate how a lock works when a key is inserted and turned. He really knows his trade. He's had a shop in a few locations in Van Nuys but now he's strictly mobile. Five minutes after meeting him, it felt like I'd known him since high school. Everything I've read here from the other Yelpers is not exaggerated. Seriously people!! Jeff is the man!!
