I have been wanting to try this Optician for a while, just from passing by on the way to Starbucks and the Lynbrook train station. But, to be honest, I always figured this store would cost me too much, since the store is an independent, rather than a chain. My last two glasses, from Sears and a store in Roosevelt were both rather 'meh' and didn't seem all that reasonably proved either. So I figured, what do I got to lose by at least looking to see what this store has? And I walk in, and the owner has a customer but greets me warmly anyway, and shortly afterwards, the customer who he had been helping said she wanted to think about it for a while and he could help me, and honestly, within 10 minutes he - working intuitively with me - picked out the perfect pair of glasses for me. I mean - exactly what I wanted. Better than I expected, actually. It was unbelievable. Same glasses he was wearing in fact. So I tell me wife, you gotta go see Dom (Dominick). He's the nicest guy, and he'll help you find what you want within minutes. So, she was skeptical, but I kept suggesting she just go see. What could it take? A few minutes from your busy Saturday afternoon? And, honestly, it was as quick as my visit and she loves the new glasses. And she loved Dom too. And his prices were better than the chain stores. I first went to ValOptical based on a referral from my cousin -- who said Valoptical owner-optician Dominic Fornaro was the best -- and I will be forever grateful. I suffer from keratoconus in both eyes, it's a cornea disease that causes significant visual impairment. Combined with severe astigmatism and nearsightedness, my nickname of "Magoo" while hilarious, was all too accurate. For years I suffered with poor vision, unable to wear contacts. Back in 2003, the only recommended treatment for keratoconus was cornea transplants. Since I had problems with both eyes, it seemed far too drastic to consider. But I'm a writer and an editor, so I needed to see to do my job. So I went to Valoptical. Dom and his staff were able to help me, and even mange to find contacts! A year ago, I was able to have corrective surgery on my eyes, the incredible Dr. Donnenfeld at OCLI placed Intacs in my corneas -- plastic inserts just beneath the surface of the eye in the periphery of the cornea -- and I was given referrals to other opticians for follow-up and eye care needs. I said , thanks but no thanks. I went to Dom, and I have never seen the world the way I do now. Dominic Fornaro and his staff are incredible. Not impressed at all. The owner was initially GREAT - i mean five star when he was helping my husband try on glasses. And also by five star - I mean he told me to look him up on Yelp because all of his reviews are five star. Well, I feel like the other reviews might be something that he set up because my experience was far from 5 star. Initially, he was patient, friendly, even offering up a small discount. But then my husband asked him what insurance he would take (we have a great plan) and he stated that he didn't take insurance and told us that stores that do don't have such a nice array of glasses and/or would charge us a lot more for glasses that aren't covered. This place definitely has a great selection of glasses, but they also have the price to go with it. Even though my husband was done and wanted to find a place that took insurance, I said that if I found a pair I'd like then I'd buy it. I guess he didn't believe me because he said he had to close the store and pick up his daughter, gave me quick price of $350 on a pair of glasses, offered up a "close to 30%" discount of $50 off and ushered us on our way telling us to do our research and think about it. I think he just knew he wasn't getting the sale. I walked out of the store, a bit put off...found the designer glasses that I wanted online for $110 and with a prescription, $150. Much much less than what he was offering with his "no insurance" discount. Same pair of glasses bought and worn.I guess I did my research. Nice guy but not a good experience. read more

I was referred by a friend , Dominick was pleasant at first. When fitting my frames with replacement lens ,he seemed to struggled and deliver less than quality result. The bifocal line was set too low and the left lens was loose in the frame. He was more concerned about collecting his payment then satifing a costumer. I could not use them. When I returned for a correction , he started to complain about my frame were not good and that he spent 45 minutes trying to get it right while delivering a loose lens and a miss located bifocal line. Out of frustration he was blaming me and trying to intimidate me by saying "I rather refund your money" He was surprised that I excepted his offer. I found his behavior to be unprofessional by putting his self interest before the customer's interest. I feel that your reputation is only as good as your last sale. When I said I would post a review, He pleaded with me that he had children, a wife, and a business to think about. I thought his behavior was pathetic. I live down the block from this store and I'm so glad my husband and I went in. Dominick was so genuinely nice and accommodating, especially in light of the fact that we were there with our two rambunctious toddlers. The exam was quick, there was a great selection at reasonable prices and the glasses were complete in 20 minutes. This is a nice location. Dom takes care of my whole family. My wife & kids love him. In fact, I refer to him as my wife's "therapist". She thinks that choosing frames is like choosing a house. He manages to always put her in something she likes at a price we can afford. Their prescriptions changes frequently, and he is aways very accommodating especially with repairs.
