I've been coming here for several years to get my bike tuned up for the season, and it's always a great experience. The father-and-son team is friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Prices are fair, and despite often having a waiting list, they usually get my bike back to me quickly. They recommended staying with Lizard Skins when my bar tape wore out, and it was the perfect choice. My bike shifts like new every time they're done. I always leave satisfied--great people to do business with. Highly recommend!

Valley Stream Bicycle & Hockey shop has been a small business success story for years, decades, regardless of its actual location here in South Shore Nassau County on Merrick road. It use to be in Valley Stream hence the name im sure, but in recent years moved up to a different spot on Merrick Road in Lynbrook. Still Valley Stream Bike shop though! :) It all started with a local Valley Stream resident that has such enthusiasm for Biking and Hockey, that turned into the genius idea to become a local small business owner to continue to serve his beloved community. The owner Tommy of this small business grew up and was educated in these parts. He obviously recognized the miss and need within the community for this type of business. As a local hands on shop he has always been there with a big smile and personality to greet you happily and give good service to you regardless of your need. Whether its a new bike or fixing your bike in some way, there has never been a 'No' to take on your request or questions. I have always found him and his team of workers to be very reliable, getting the job done right! Example, years ago I decided to personally challenge myself to do the 5 Borough Bike Tour in NYC, so naturally being a North Valley Stream resident at the time, I went to the central more southern side of town to get my Hot Pink & Black Mountain Bike looked at before the race. Mind you this Hot Pink & Black bike was the last bike my father gifted me as a kid, purchased from Toys R Us - near Green Acres in Valley Stream, that sadly just recently closed. :( I knew if I was going to traverse across NYC parks, bridges and community roadways, that I was going to get a tune up and make sure the chain and breaks were functionally working right. That's when I really met the owner Tommy and he gave me that big smile of his and said that's great that I was taking on the challenge. He went on to tell me that he and the Valley Stream Bike shop team [built of friends and local community riders] did the race every year, and pointed at a few pictures he adorned his shop walls with. He was honest with me and said that most people do it on a road/racing bike. I was honest with him and said, yeah I noted from what I saw televised, but this is what I got and can't really offer [at that time] to invest in one of his cool new ones. No problem he said it's still doable with what you have, we just have to clean it up a bit. He suggested that maybe I'd want to swap out to say a hybrid tire as that would still give my Hot Pink beauty the mountain bike look, but with a slightly thinner tire with road bike feel. That totally made sense and that was something indeed I could afford to do along with the tune up! Perfect come pick it up in a week he said and I was happily on my way. When I went to pick it up she looked shiny and like brand new again, Cool! Felt like that little girl again rolling it out of Toys R Us, just this time I was rolling it out of Valley Stream Bike shop on Merrick road. :) Tommy remembered that I told him I was going to use it for the upcoming race, and said 'How do you plan on getting there?' Response: I hadn't really thought about it...I just figured I'd drive into the city pay to park somewhere, race and drive home. ;) That's when he in my mind went above and beyond and said, why don't you come to the shop again early that morning. Meet up with everyone on his team that was going, get the tires and all pumped ready to race and follow them into the city. They had a good 'secret' spot that they always parked at in Staten Island near the end of the race. He suggested by doing it that way, when I finished the race all I had to do is ride back to my car, load up and drive home. Perfect! What an expert racers idea vs the novice i was at the time. ;) I did as suggested and its history since then. I remember how nice it was to pass him and a fellow rider [as they would stop within a borough or two along the way, to check out local businesses - Me on the other hand there was no stopping. It was my race, my goal to do and couldn't chance on my first time out with this kind of challenge not getting to the end. :) ], and they were like 'Hey Hot Pink Bike Girl' and waved, loosely applauded me forward. Nevertheless, its a memory I will never forget. In years after I did get more into racing for charity groups and did buy a racing road bike. I take it to his shop of course as well to get a tune up before big races and all. Recently took my racing road bike in when I noted my front tire wasn't inflating properly. Once again first thoughts were, don't give up drive over to V.S. Bike shop and have them take a look. They did and all I needed was a new tube. No worries I'll take one and even pay you for the labor of getting it all fixed up in there. :) The best way i could think to thank you and all that you have done in this community is to assure that you have a great review.

This bike shop is awesome!…read more Came here on recommendation from a friend and it did not disappoint. My fiancé bought us two folding mountain bikes offline and when we got them shipped to us we assembled them. But didn't trust that everything was loose from factory. So I called this shop and he told me to come down and he would tune them up! Super fair priced, and actually cares about his customers. Very happy I came here!

Asked him how long he has been doing this, he said 50 years. Ok, so i figured he can handle this easy. I WAS DEAD WRONG. The whole thing was a disaster. 1st off, he was using a screw driver looking tool that had a spoon looking tip to remove and put back the tire. He also at a few times used this forceps looking pliers to force the tire into the rim. He tried fixing it puncturing an initial inner tube. Then he took it out coz the new tube is now also punctured. He tried again (removing the 1st replacement inner tube) replacing it with a 2nd inner tube. Now hes looking frustrated and forcing the tire into the rim with these hand tools. In the end he gave up complaining that everything in the design of the tire to not being the right size for the rim. Before i left, i told him he damaged and scratched my rims which he denied but if i did not take the photo, then im just lying and making things up right ‍ Keep in mind this is a Cannondale stock bike wc i bought from a Cannondale factory store (Carle Place, now closed) Please be careful of this store. This is not a store i will recommend or patronize. In fact i will have the tire and now rim repaired by the a Cannondale dealer when they open tomorrow (9/7/21) I am extremely disappointed with the outcome This store has an almost 5 star rating Plus particularly i did not notice that he carried famous brand name bikes. The pictures of my rims post attempted repair speak for itself.

In May, I was calling to various bicycle shops for estimates on assembling a frame-up cyclocross…read morebike build. Most of the quotes I received were in the neighborhood of $100-$450, because I sourced all parts myself and planned to bring everything in and have it assembled to spec. I called Oceanside Cycle and was told that it would cost over $1300 for the mechanic to assemble the bike. I asked if that was a quote for hourly labor rates or what the basis was for that. Long story short, that's what the owner threw out off the top of his head. Needless to say, I was not bringing my bike there to be built. My husband and his friend sometimes bring their bikes there for minor part replacements, and a couple times My husband spoke with the owner about possibly purchasing a new bike. In the end, My husband ends up settling on a part replacement for his current bike which is under 2 years old. He does not make large purchases hastily and is very smart with his money. After my bike was built at a shop in the West End, I learned that the other mechanic thought it would be better not to do the tubeless tire install I requested, and put in two tubes on my wheelset. I brought my bike out for one short ride, and had a pinch flat the next day when I wanted to go for a longer trail ride. I brought my bike to Oceanside Cycle. Scott was in there with some lady looking casually at bikes for her and her fiancee. I was told it would be around 30-45 minutes before I could get my tire aired up and on my way. I understand the hustle, and if it's thousands of dollars of earning potential versus my flat tire, why wouldn't he attend to this possibly good sales prospect. So I sat around and waited while he gave his entire spiel. Finally, my husband and his friend came in through the back door and were wondering what the hold up was. I told them he's working on a sale and I was waiting to be attended. Finally he put my bike onto the stand. Evidently the tube the other mechanic installed was overfilled with air and it busted. So Scott replaced the inner tube and aired up the tire. I had to ask him to check the tire pressure on the front tire, it was not automatically checked, which tells me a lot about Scott's give-a-shit meter when it comes to service. If you can believe, he charged my husband more than $50 to change my flat. The entire time he was banging my wheel around against the countertop and I could hear all the clanging of my cassette against his work surface while he was changing out the tube. I didn't particularly love the way he was treating my $350 wheel, but I didn't say anything, because you can't make someone like that more self-aware. They either give a shit about customer perception, or they don't-- and this guy obviously does not. Fast forward 2 weeks, I was sick for a few days and it was around 1 week I was off the bike. The front tube had lost a significant amount of pressure sitting for days, and we only noticed it before heading out for a trail more than 10 miles away. Around closing time on Saturday, or just before it.. We decided to ride over to Oceanside Cycle and try to get aired up again. As we rode up to the back door, we could see Scott standing inside looking out the back window at us. I went and knocked at the back door, to see if I could ask to be aired up. The door was locked, and I assumed he was closing up, but still thought he might at least speak to me. Instead, he walks over to the back door and pulls on the door to make sure it was locked and just shouted through the door CLOSED. It was really off-putting. So i just told my husband, "It's fine. I just truly never want to bring my bike to this shop again. That was disgusting the way he yelled through the closed door." I would not have been upset if he OPENED the door to make contact with us, two people on bikes who have purchased services from him numerous times over the years (he used to service a different hybrid bike belonging to my husband's sister for years).. if he had just simply said "I'm sorry, what was it that you came by about?" or even told us "I can't stay today, it's past closing" what have you... I'd have appreciated that. As we were rounding the corner, we ran into Scott. My husband asked "I guess you don't have two minutes to air up a tire? I'm here all the time, I didn't expect that." and Scott started in with "Well guys, better luck next time"; I said to my husband, "actually no, this is good enough for me, I won't bring my bike here again." So Scott, instead of talking to me like a human being, (he had already walked straight past us without stopping) was talking over his shoulder "No problem, don't come back. Have a great day". So I said "Yeah, it's great. f off." and he goes "WOOOO!! That's a great way to get in the door anywhere" like, bich you didn't even OPEN THE DOOR to speak to us. You pulled the door to make sure it was locked and shouted out to us. I told him, yeah because you're an asshole. Avoid this crummy shop.

That would have been fine except it would have been professionally expected coming from you in advance not from Nick when I picked it up. 2. Cable Run Wrong, this is a huge frustration as you also noticed before I picked it up. 3. Brake Adjustments, you tried to make this right but honestly your new mechanic and you are way out of your element. The housing wasn't even seated properly and the housing was in wrong. I tried it 2x for you to fix and then brought to another shop. This cost me another $80 as I needed new cables for the brakes, and now they are black and not even my matching orange. 4. Bar Tape was done poorly, already coming up in certain areas, I was there when Nick was doing it and knew he was struggling. I got more electric than I thought holding it down. At no point should bolts randomly fling off your bike while you going down the Brooklyn bridge going 24mph. I'm a high school student and I had to pay for my bike with my own money. I've been working since 10th grade to help my mom because she is a single parent so for me the loss of about 5k including repairs leave me without transportation as I can not afford to repair it at this point. I've spent 3.7k on a bike, this isn't including the repairs i had to pay over the span of a year which amount to at least 1.4k+ after random bolts detaching and motor failing, and as soon as the warranty expired my bike had a random electrical issue where the bike wouldn't accelerate. From the owner Pete: OK, where are you going? (Direct email sent from owner) 1- Last Mile NYC replaces all of the electronics on your bike. The cost of the parts and labor is $2910.54 2- Send your bike back to Super73. They will do their own diagnosis, and determine the issues and fix the problems.
