Valley Stream Bicycle & Hockey shop has been a small business success story for years, decades, regardless of its actual location here in South Shore Nassau County on Merrick road. It use to be in Valley Stream hence the name im sure, but in recent years moved up to a different spot on Merrick Road in Lynbrook. Still Valley Stream Bike shop though! :) It all started with a local Valley Stream resident that has such enthusiasm for Biking and Hockey, that turned into the genius idea to become a local small business owner to continue to serve his beloved community. The owner Tommy of this small business grew up and was educated in these parts. He obviously recognized the miss and need within the community for this type of business. As a local hands on shop he has always been there with a big smile and personality to greet you happily and give good service to you regardless of your need. Whether its a new bike or fixing your bike in some way, there has never been a 'No' to take on your request or questions. I have always found him and his team of workers to be very reliable, getting the job done right! Example, years ago I decided to personally challenge myself to do the 5 Borough Bike Tour in NYC, so naturally being a North Valley Stream resident at the time, I went to the central more southern side of town to get my Hot Pink & Black Mountain Bike looked at before the race. Mind you this Hot Pink & Black bike was the last bike my father gifted me as a kid, purchased from Toys R Us - near Green Acres in Valley Stream, that sadly just recently closed. :( I knew if I was going to traverse across NYC parks, bridges and community roadways, that I was going to get a tune up and make sure the chain and breaks were functionally working right. That's when I really met the owner Tommy and he gave me that big smile of his and said that's great that I was taking on the challenge. He went on to tell me that he and the Valley Stream Bike shop team [built of friends and local community riders] did the race every year, and pointed at a few pictures he adorned his shop walls with. He was honest with me and said that most people do it on a road/racing bike. I was honest with him and said, yeah I noted from what I saw televised, but this is what I got and can't really offer [at that time] to invest in one of his cool new ones. No problem he said it's still doable with what you have, we just have to clean it up a bit. He suggested that maybe I'd want to swap out to say a hybrid tire as that would still give my Hot Pink beauty the mountain bike look, but with a slightly thinner tire with road bike feel. That totally made sense and that was something indeed I could afford to do along with the tune up! Perfect come pick it up in a week he said and I was happily on my way. When I went to pick it up she looked shiny and like brand new again, Cool! Felt like that little girl again rolling it out of Toys R Us, just this time I was rolling it out of Valley Stream Bike shop on Merrick road. :) Tommy remembered that I told him I was going to use it for the upcoming race, and said 'How do you plan on getting there?' Response: I hadn't really thought about it...I just figured I'd drive into the city pay to park somewhere, race and drive home. ;) That's when he in my mind went above and beyond and said, why don't you come to the shop again early that morning. Meet up with everyone on his team that was going, get the tires and all pumped ready to race and follow them into the city. They had a good 'secret' spot that they always parked at in Staten Island near the end of the race. He suggested by doing it that way, when I finished the race all I had to do is ride back to my car, load up and drive home. Perfect! What an expert racers idea vs the novice i was at the time. ;) I did as suggested and its history since then. I remember how nice it was to pass him and a fellow rider [as they would stop within a borough or two along the way, to check out local businesses - Me on the other hand there was no stopping. It was my race, my goal to do and couldn't chance on my first time out with this kind of challenge not getting to the end. :) ], and they were like 'Hey Hot Pink Bike Girl' and waved, loosely applauded me forward. Nevertheless, its a memory I will never forget. In years after I did get more into racing for charity groups and did buy a racing road bike. I take it to his shop of course as well to get a tune up before big races and all. Recently took my racing road bike in when I noted my front tire wasn't inflating properly. Once again first thoughts were, don't give up drive over to V.S. Bike shop and have them take a look. They did and all I needed was a new tube. Instead, they broke it and refuse to take any responsibility, insisting it was already in that condition--which I know isn't true. The father, who tends to twist words to suit his argument, kept denying any fault. Meanwhile, the son was rude and obnoxious, repeatedly interrupting my conversation with his father, even to the point where the father himself asked him to back away. Tom and his staff were AMAZING! With the craziness of this pandemic he was attentive and apologetic for having everyone wait outside on line. Only two people were allowed inside to practice social distancing. Once inside he helped us and we choose the last hybrid Cannondale available. He had us put down a small deposit as he prepped the bike to leave his shop. We came back picked up the bike and some extra accessories. The experience during such a chaotic time was very pleasant. I love this place! Tommy, the owner, always makes me feel welcomed. I bought a used bike a couple of years ago to train for my first triathlon. I brought the bike in to be serviced, since I bought used from a person and not a bike store, it needed a tune up. Funny enough also haven't rode a bike since I was a child so I actually need help on how to use the bike, learn the gears and know where to ride. Tommy helped with all of that AND he offered to take me on a ride nearby to make sure I used my bike correctly. His help was tremendous and I went on to complete my first triathlon that year and a few more since. I always bring my bike here and I choose to buy some gear and other items here too. Sure I can buy on line, but his level of service and attention always has me coming back. Hoping to purchase bikes for my two young daughters here someday soon too! read more

Yup, never going there again.. I went in recently to change 2 tubes for my track bike since it's been sitting in the shed for a while. Upon arriving I explained that the back tire holds air for a few hours then goes flat, " yeah you'll need a new tube " . Since I was in a rush I agreed to it. Go for my ride, 3 hrs later back tire is flat again. So I take it back , now the story changes, I had a piece of glass inside the tire, WHICH shouldn't be if they checked the tires properly the first time, oh! And my tire brand ( bontrager )wasn't good so that was another factor why I got a flat tire. Of course they tried to sell me new tires, why wouldn't they. Not sure how to give half a star or no star for that matter , but that 1 star was given only bc they were open. read more

I made an unfortunate mistake of leaving this review for Lynbrook Bicycle. I have since deleted that and left it here since this is the right establishment. I myself do not like rating business this low but my one and only particular experience has to do with their service of repair or work on my bike. Giving out low ratings affects a business in my opinion and I like small name stores to flourish. But this needs to be said. I know bikes. I work on bikes and know the amount of time and effort that goes into it. I respect the trade and the craft. However, I do not have the tools sometimes and need to visit service places likes these. To be specific I had a baby seat I wanted to mount but my single speed bike didn't have the quick release axle necessary. I made the swap from a regular lugged axle at home since I'm savvy like that but couldn't tension the axle down enough. So I brought it in with the carrier rack all hanging. Some Bulky dude calls me out first asking me where I bought it(Brands) and says yah that's the wrong carrier mount for your bike. I looked it up later and yes the rack I had is for a bike with a disc brake but these are bikes not cars and you can rig it up just fine. Before he went to offer any work around solution he tries to sell me the part he thinks would work. He then asks his service guy(mechanic) about the cost of installing. He gives me some insane price. $40 for the "right" baby seat carrier and $45 for the install of the part(I should take that back since the part cost was actually quite reasonable....maybe take this review with a grain of salt and consider that this place has great deals but will be the end of you if you are looking for servicing)...so $45 to install a part that won't fit even after the service guy said it won't fit. Hrm. Ok, so I said how about how much to adjust my axle since it's what I needed in the first place and I'll figure out the rest of the job myself. The service guy is like it'll be $35. Since I walked in to this shop it felt like the dudes were playing on my willingness to work with them. So I said thank you have a nice day walked out and Took my bike and went back to Brand's. At Brand's - I said to their service guy I need y'all to fix my quick release axle cause I want to install this baby seat carrier. Dude is like ok. I ask for a cost estimate and he's like idk. I'm a bit defeated at this point since I didn't know what to do and said ok let's do it anyway. He hands me the service receipt with the cost estimate. $21 dollars. I wait a few hours and pick it up. Wouldn't you know it the rack is attached. I go to pay and hold my breathe. $21!!!! I gave the guy the difference of what I would've paid at Valley Stream as tip. Edit: the guy who owns this shop doesn't know how the internet works. read more

Not for a second did we feel pressured into a sale, their patience with our inexperience made us feel so comfortable, and they got us into the perfect bikes for what we needed. My boyfriend needed a larger frame to be built and they had it ready for us same day within 2 hours!! I was extremely nervous and hesitant to go into a bike shop on my own. Being a female and always erring on the side of caution, I felt I didn't want to get ripped off. Nor did I want to be helped by a salesperson who was more interested in making money off of me. What intrigued me was the neatness (immaculate) and layout of the store. I thought, what the heck, I'll just go in and browse, comparison shop. Ward off anyone who approaches me. I was immediately greeted by not one, but two smiling faces. I'd come to learn that it was a Father and Son team, who was more than happy to help me. I explained right off the bat that I didn't want to impulse buy nor was I looking to spend a lot of money. At this current time, I'm just looking. I thought that would have them lose their interest in me as a customer with other customers in the store clearly purchasing that day. Wrong! Tom, both the Father and Son's name, showed me several different bikes and took the time to explain what every single bike was meant for. They asked me what I intended to do with the bicycle; casual riding, speed riding, competition, etc. Once I said what my intentions were, I was steered to the less expensive bikes. That impressed me in itself because they kind of had me at "Can I help you with something today" and the smiles were a plus also. Here I was thinking a family run bike shop is only looking to make money and boy, was I wrong. Since I looked hesitant, Tom advised I go home and do some research and come back when I'm more comfortable with making my purchase. That wasn't necessary. It's been several months since I purchased my bike and I've been back to that store for more casual visits than visits to purchase something for my bike. The shop is nice, pretty well organized and the repair shop does the job. However my main issue is that Tommy charges over msrp on most items and even when he tells you he will give you a "deal" and not charge tax (illegal I think) you are still paying more than the msrp, I could be wrong but I find that unethical. Overall the main bike shops in the area basically hate each other so I guess you just need to pick one. read more
