A relative in Taiwan passed away, and we had to send notarized power of attorney docs to our family there so they can start processing his estate. Needless to say, it's important, and the ordeal involved us running to the consulate a couple of times to get those papers notarized. To ensure the papers arrive ASAP, I paid for the more expensive shipping option ($75). USPS lost the mail. Somehow it got sent to Bosnia. Crazy, right? The mail literally went in the opposite direction. Worse yet, since it's been returned to the US, it's treated as an import item so it's been stuck in NY customs for the past MONTH. It's been 1.5 MONTHS since I mailed it out, and it's still stuck in customs ON ITS WAY BACK TO ME. During this time, we actually went back to the consulate and re-notarized the exact same docs. Sending it out this time with Fedex or DHL. I went to the Bayview USPS at 1300 Evans, and they were actually a bit more helpful. They looked at the receipt and said the West Portal office missed some things I was supposed to fill out. For example, I needed to put a dollar value, even if it's $1. Also, I can't just write "documents" in the item description - it needed to be a lot more specific (what the docs are, how many pages, etc). The 1300 Evans office explained that it was on the agent to double check and make sure I filled out the forms correctly. Yeah, no one here did that. I'm not sure if I can trust USPS again. I've been hearing from people about their own horror stories with USPS. Someone's package got sent to SF, then went to Oakland and San Jose, before coming back to SF again... it literally went on a joyride around the Bay Area! But if I MUST use USPS again, I'd probably go to the 1300 Evans branch - they're bigger and way more knowledgeable. read more

This usps office was closed for several years after damages from a fire that broke out in a nearby building. I'm sure everyone in the area was glad to see it reopen but the old staff are all gone. The new dude who seems to work alone at the counter is the rudest, grump who has ever worked there. There used to be a grumpy woman over 30 yrs ago and I was so glad when she retired. This office doesn't carry any 4 cents or lower denomination stamps that I can use with older stamps to add up to the current 78 cents first class fee. You go in and ask a question and he's lecturing you. Doesn't greet you back after you say "good morning " and doesn't thank you. Why is he even in the front office dealing with customers? Nice neighborhood Post Office, though the parking gets tight on weekends you can normally find parking if you are patient any time of the week. The station was well stocked and organized, the staff was polite and efficient making the overall experience pleasant. My visit was a simple one to get some stamps, and though they were out of Christmas stamps they had some pretty ones with flowers. It's not a major post office which might have helped keep the line shorter , and faster, regardless I am just happy my visit was painless today. In short a nice neighborhood Post Office. read more

Baronk I dropped off a prepaid package w/tracking (9400 1082 0549 8073 2929 37) at the West Portal Post office in San Francisco on the prepaid package counter and had paid beyond the required amount for the weight and dimensions. One week later, the USPS website still hadn't registered that it had been dropped off to the post office. I went back to West Portal post office and was told the same thing. They gave me a phone number to an automated response system with no luck on my end. When pressed to provide an explanation for the lost parcel, the post office attendant acknowledged that they sometimes get too busy and fail to scan all of the dropped off items. Now, one week later my buyer wants a refund for the missing parcel and I have no idea where it is. Nice going USPS. So from now on, whenever I drop off packages to USPS, I get a receipt for every prepaid item. read more

The USPS in West Portal is probably my most favorite location of all time. And here's why... The Service is great, even though the line could get long, the ladies that work here double and triple check your packages to make sure they are okay; on top of that they give you a few pointers about package size and how to package them correctly. Even if you are not prepared completely, they offer numerous things to complete the packaging process. When you are finished, they call you back to the front of the line so you don't have to jump back in line. When they call you back, they make sure they position the conversation where the others in line know that you were already in line and were just putting finishing touches on the package so there isn't any mass confusion of who was in line first. The post office was comfortable and clean, clearly marked where we should stand with adorable floor stickers. The staff was very friendly, and accommodating. It seemed 'family friendly' environment if a post office ever was one. There was a little old man who liked to wave to both of the young ladies, and they all smiled at him and wished him a good day. I hate to give this place 2 stars, but it can definitely be better. This is one of the worse post offices I've been to. I only came because I didn't want to deal with the parking on Mission. Don't get me wrong, West Portal is lucky to have a post office here, but the employees are very slow and keep trying to persuade you to buy stamps. The mailing lobby is small, but the area where the PO Boxes are, is biig. I came to mail off a document but I needed it to be a 'certified mail with a return receipt' and the when I finally got to the counter, the lady just gave me 2 slips of paper and said "fill it out - next!" Uh....what did I need to fill out exactly other than my return address? After I submitted it, she said I was missing the delivery address - you didn't even tell me! So, she would put me on the side again so she can help other customers. They don't even have the post masters or managers name on the nameplates in the back like they're supposed to. I appreciate that they have a Post Office in West Portal. But, this place could use so serious help. First off, there are only two people working the counter it seems at all times. Grant it, there are three spots. I do not know who decides this but that is just not efficient AT ALL. Secondly, there needs to be a self mailing station setup here or something because some of the items that I see people mailing can be expedited if a service like that were provided. The lines here can tend to get ridiculous as well. The lines can extend outside at time as well. I understand that there are P.O. boxes and such in the lobby but they could eliminate some of them and extend the counter inside. That would be such a HUGE help. The workers here are great. I think they do the best that they can but they need to hire some more people. I literally saw one guy taking forever because he wanted the cheapest shipping and was set on what he was willing to pay. So, the guy behind the counter had to go back and forth with him for 20 minutes till he was able to find a decent shipping fee and service within his budget. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! I go to this location quite a lot because it is within walking distance of my house. I have always dreaded it, and agree with most of the negative reviews here, especially regarding the rudeness, poor attitude, and poor efficiencies of this station, but I chalked it up to a typical gov't run service. Not true as I finally witnessed how it *should* be done, when I was trying to make an appt there for a new passport application. Me: dial the phone and it continues to ring for what must have been 10 min, until someone answered and PROMPTLY HUNG UP ON ME! Me: dial the number again and let it ring for about 6 to 7 min until somone finally answered with a curt, "Hello!" (no identification or anything.) Me: "I'm calling to make an appointment for a new passport application." Agent: "We don't have anything until November. Go try City Hall. They are first come first serve." Click. WTF??? Me: Dial the Diamond Heights Post Office, and someone answers on the second ring! Agent: "USPS Diamond Heights Station, agent X, how may I help you?" Me: "I'm calling to make an appointment for a new passport application." Agent: "Certainly, what day would you like to come in?" etc. etc. THIS is how a Post Office should be run! I love this post office, sometimes they have long lines, but they are pretty good at opening all of the registers when this happens. The staff are all friendly with no attitude, they sometimes will spark conversation and it's cool because even if you're the next person in line, they have respectful timing, meaning that the conversation ends when the person gets the receipt.. I needed to buy some stamps (yes I still send envelops through the mail) and found the line short and the folks behind the counter to be efficient and nice. The women who work here never get to see the sun in that dingy grey room they're kept in. No wonder they're unhappy. I want to set them free in a grassy field on a sunny day. The line here is often out the door, and is always grumbling under its breath. When you finally grumble your way up to the counter, the clerks dispassionately try to upsell you to a faster delivery method, or an add-on service like delivery confirmation. I've never had any trouble at this post office. The men and women who work there do their jobs, and they do it well. I honestly don't understand what all the bad ratings are about... Unless I get there right when they open, I usually wait behind 2-3 people before being helped. Waiting in line is just part of the post office (no, you are not the only person who needs to ship a package). I rarely wait more than 5 minutes. If you ask me, people who get their panties in a bunch over waiting a few minutes at the post office have got some major problems. If you don't like it, use a different service (i.e. FedEx, UPS, etc.), pay the difference and be on your way. If the people here are grumpy (they never are when I go in...), they're probably that way because they have to serve self-centered pricks all day who think that waiting in line is tantamount to torture. Sorry about the rant, but I see way too many people on the verge of having a coronary when I'm in line at the West Portal Post Office. I go to the post office to ship things, not to make friends with the workers or to have my day brightened. If all you're after are fake smiles and "How are ya's?", then head up the street to Wells Fargo, they dish 'em out by the boatload. If you want to ship something and you live nearby, then give this place a try. When you do come, though, do us all a favor and leave your anxieties, frustrations, and poor time management skills at home. read more

Horrible service. I was going from the number listed from 430p until they closed to see if they had my package as it was the address listed on my ups notice listed on my door. I don't have a car, so I was trying to save myself a long bus ride there. If you have a business phone, you should have someone designated to answer it. And before you say to check my tracking number all it listed was delivery exception online. read more

I feel compelled to give the West Portal Post Office as well as the Postal employee 5 stars for her level of professional courtesy. I arrived on Friday a few minutes before opening time - 9am, and was the only person there, other than the employee's. I was greeted with a 'Good Morning', then handed the woman my package pickup slip, and in less than a few minutes she had my package ready for me. I just got back from this branch and received horrible customer service. After inquiring about the manager, the man who helped me told me that there was no manager there and that he was in charge. He was very suspicious. Rather than calling in and asking to speak with the real manager, I decided to post on Yelp. I will be avoiding this post office and I recommend that everyone do the same. They have a package I paid $125 to have sent here. They tried delivering it, but I was at work - and the notice is vague: it says I can pick it up Date: 11, Time: 11. What does that supposed to mean? So, I called an 800 # yesterday, to ask for it to be delivered today, Saturday. The representative sounded confused. So this morning, I tried to track the package with the article #, and there was no update on its status. I tried calling the 800 number again, and since it's the main number, they couldn't tell me anything, but provided me the number to this post office. Now I'm wondering if they plan to deliver the package. So I can either wait here for the package that may never be delivered or go to the post office, and risk missing the delivery. So, I tried to call their phone number several times, and they just let it ring. Nobody answers to even put me on hold. It just rings. 1 star for lousy service. read more

They have 3 speeds here; slow, slower, and slowest. And when they do not know the answer to your questions and ask to speak to a manager, they tell you this location does not have a manager and go to Lakeshore Plaza and stand in line there to ask to speak to a manager, who is off on that day. No matter what question you ask them, the answer is always, do you want to buy stamps!!!! They can be in the middle of helping you, when it is time for their break/lunch, up comes the closed sign and any more needs, you have to go to another window. AWFUL!!! read more

I'm a shame to say that this is my area post office. I had pre-weighed my package to get an idea how much my postage was going to be. I didn't have the stamps and thus stopped by the post office on my way home. I noticed a postal worker was going through the line to solicit sales of postal products. When it was my turn, I jokingly told her, "Don't waste your breath, I only need to put postage on my package" to which she started laughing. When I got up to the counter, I told the other postal worker I only want 1st class postage on my package. She came up with about twice the amount of postage I had previously calculated. I asked her why it was so much when I had calculated to be $2.83. She proceeded to stamp it "Priority" and print out the stamp label and told me it'll get there in 2 days. It may get there in 2 days all the same but there is a price distinction between "1st Class" and "Priority Mail". I told her what she gave me was not what I wanted. I think this post office is a rip off. Better watch out for their swift devious moves in charging more service! read more

parking sucks at west portal! but hey .. just like any other post office i've been there, there is always going to be a wait! but at this location, it seems like the people who work here actually NOTICE that there is a huge line going out the door and try their best to accomodate people like having people fill out their custom forms on the side while they help another customer. overall, i just wish parking was better and that they had one of those automated shipping machines that would make life so much easier for those who actually understand what they're doing! read more
